Towards Context-aware Mobile Privacy Notice: Implementation of A Deployable Contextual Privacy Policies Generator

Lengthy and legally phrased privacy policies impede users' understanding of how mobile applications collect and process personal data. Prior work proposed Contextual Privacy Policies (CPPs) for mobile apps to display shorter policy snippets only in the corresponding user interface contexts, but the pipeline could not be deployable in real-world mobile environments. In this paper, we present PrivScan, the first deployable CPP Software Development Kit (SDK) for Android. It captures live app screenshots to identify GUI elements associated with types of personal data and displays CPPs in a concise, user-facing format. We provide a lightweight floating button that offers low-friction, on-demand control. The architecture leverages remote deployment to decouple the multimodal backend pipeline from a mobile client comprising five modular components, thereby reducing on-device resource demands and easing cross-platform portability. A feasibility-oriented evaluation shows an average execution time of 9.15\,s, demonstrating the practicality of our approach. The source code of PrivScan is available at https://github.com/buyanghc/PrivScan and the demo video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck-25otfyHc.

Pressure-Driven Moiré Potential Enhancement and Tertiary Gap Opening in Graphene/h-BN Heterostructure

Moiré superlattices enable engineering of correlated quantum states through tunable periodic potentials, where twist angle controls periodicity but dynamic potential strength modulation remains challenging. Here, we develop a high-pressure quantum transport technique for van der Waals heterostructures, achieving the ultimate pressure limit (~9 GPa) in encapsulated moiré devices. In aligned graphene/h-BN, we demonstrate that pressure induces a substantial enhancement of the moiré potential strength, evidenced by the suppression of the first valence bandwidth and the near-doubling of the primary band gap. Moreover, we report the first observation of a tertiary gap emerging above 6.4 GPa, verifying theoretical predictions. Our results establish hydrostatic pressure as a universal parameter to reshape moiré band structures. By enabling quantum transport studies at previously inaccessible pressure regimes, this Letter expands the accessible parameter space for exploring correlated phases in moiré systems.

Securing the Sky: Integrated Satellite-UAV Physical Layer Security for Low-Altitude Wireless Networks

Low-altitude wireless networks (LAWNs) have garnered significant attention in the forthcoming 6G networks. In LAWNs, satellites with wide coverage and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with flexible mobility can complement each other to form integrated satellite-UAV networks, providing ubiquitous and high-speed connectivity for low-altitude operations. However, the higher line-of-sight probability in low-altitude airspace increases transmission security concerns. In this work, we present a collaborative beamforming-based physical layer security scheme for LAWNs. We introduce the fundamental aspects of integrated satellite-UAV networks, physical layer security, UAV swarms, and collaborative beamforming for LAWN applications. Following this, we highlight several opportunities for collaborative UAV swarm secure applications enabled by satellite networks, including achieving physical layer security in scenarios involving data dissemination, data relay, eavesdropper collusion, and imperfect eavesdropper information. Next, we detail two case studies: a secure relay system and a two-way aerial secure communication framework specifically designed for LAWN environments. Simulation results demonstrate that these physical layer security schemes are effective and beneficial for secure low-altitude wireless communications. A short practicality analysis shows that the proposed method is applicable to LAWN scenarios. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future research directions for enhancing security in LAWNs.

Align and Surpass Human Camouflaged Perception: Visual Refocus Reinforcement Fine-Tuning

Current multi-modal models exhibit a notable misalignment with the human visual system when identifying objects that are visually assimilated into the background. Our observations reveal that these multi-modal models cannot distinguish concealed objects, demonstrating an inability to emulate human cognitive processes which effectively utilize foreground-background similarity principles for visual analysis. To analyze this hidden human-model visual thinking discrepancy, we build a visual system that mimicks human visual camouflaged perception to progressively and iteratively `refocus' visual concealed content. The refocus is a progressive guidance mechanism enabling models to logically localize objects in visual images through stepwise reasoning. The localization process of concealed objects requires hierarchical attention shifting with dynamic adjustment and refinement of prior cognitive knowledge. In this paper, we propose a visual refocus reinforcement framework via the policy optimization algorithm to encourage multi-modal models to think and refocus more before answering, and achieve excellent reasoning abilities to align and even surpass human camouflaged perception systems. Our extensive experiments on camouflaged perception successfully demonstrate the emergence of refocus visual phenomena, characterized by multiple reasoning tokens and dynamic adjustment of the detection box. Besides, experimental results on both camouflaged object classification and detection tasks exhibit significantly superior performance compared to Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) baselines.

Enhancing Contrastive Learning-based Electrocardiogram Pretrained Model with Patient Memory Queue

In the field of automatic Electrocardiogram (ECG) diagnosis, due to the relatively limited amount of labeled data, how to build a robust ECG pretrained model based on unlabeled data is a key area of focus for researchers. Recent advancements in contrastive learning-based ECG pretrained models highlight the potential of exploiting the additional patient-level self-supervisory signals inherent in ECG. They are referred to as patient contrastive learning. Its rationale is that multiple physical recordings from the same patient may share commonalities, termed patient consistency, so redefining positive and negative pairs in contrastive learning as intrapatient and inter-patient samples provides more shared context to learn an effective representation. However, these methods still fail to efficiently exploit patient consistency due to the insufficient amount of intra-inter patient samples existing in a batch. Hence, we propose a contrastive learning-based ECG pretrained model enhanced by the Patient Memory Queue (PMQ), which incorporates a large patient memory queue to mitigate model degeneration that can arise from insufficient intra-inter patient samples. In order to further enhance the performance of the pretrained model, we introduce two extra data augmentation methods to provide more perspectives of positive and negative pairs for pretraining. Extensive experiments were conducted on three public datasets with three different data ratios. The experimental results show that the comprehensive performance of our method outperforms previous contrastive learning methods and exhibits greater robustness in scenarios with limited labeled data. The code is available at https://github.com/3hiuwoo/PMQ.

Skip-Thinking: Chunk-wise Chain-of-Thought Distillation Enable Smaller Language Models to Reason Better and Faster

Chain-of-thought (CoT) distillation allows a large language model (LLM) to guide a small language model (SLM) in reasoning tasks. Existing methods train the SLM to learn the long rationale in one iteration, resulting in two issues: 1) Long rationales lead to a large token-level batch size during training, making gradients of core reasoning tokens (i.e., the token will directly affect the correctness of subsequent reasoning) over-smoothed as they contribute a tiny fraction of the rationale. As a result, the SLM converges to sharp minima where it fails to grasp the reasoning logic. 2) The response is slow, as the SLM must generate a long rationale before reaching the answer. Therefore, we propose chunk-wise training (CWT), which uses a heuristic search to divide the rationale into internal semantically coherent chunks and focuses SLM on learning from only one chunk per iteration. In this way, CWT naturally isolates non-reasoning chunks that do not involve the core reasoning token (e.g., summary and transitional chunks) from the SLM learning for reasoning chunks, making the fraction of the core reasoning token increase in the corresponding iteration. Based on CWT, skip-thinking training (STT) is proposed. STT makes the SLM automatically skip non-reasoning medium chunks to reach the answer, improving reasoning speed while maintaining accuracy. We validate our approach on a variety of SLMs and multiple reasoning tasks.

Uncertainty modeling method for wind and solar power output in building integrated energy systems under continuous anomalous weather

The increasing occurrence of continuous anomalous weather events has intensified the uncertainty in wind and photovoltaic power generation, posing significant challenges to the operation and optimization of building integrated energy systems. Existing studies often neglect the interdependence between successive anomalous weather events and their collective impact on wind and solar power output. Additionally, conventional modeling approaches struggle to accurately capture the nonlinear fluctuations induced by these weather conditions. To address this gap, this study proposes an uncertainty modeling method based on stochastic optimization and scenario generation. The Weibull and Beta distributions characterize the probabilistic properties of wind speed and solar irradiance, respectively, while the Copula function captures the dependence between wind speed and precipitation, enabling the construction of a wind-solar power uncertainty model that incorporates the joint distribution of consecutive anomalous weather events. A Monte Carlo-based scenario generation approach is employed to construct a dataset representing anomalous weather characteristics, followed by a probabilistic distance-based scenario reduction technique to enhance modeling efficiency. Furthermore, the unscented transformation method is introduced to mitigate nonlinear propagation errors in wind and solar power state estimation. Case studies demonstrate that the proposed method effectively characterizes the fluctuation patterns of wind and solar power under continuous anomalous weather conditions while preserving the statistical properties of the original data. These findings provide a reliable basis for improving the operational resilience of building integrated energy systems under extreme weather scenarios.

Fixing Outside the Box: Uncovering Tactics for Open-Source Security Issue Management

In the rapidly evolving landscape of software development, addressing security vulnerabilities in open-source software (OSS) has become critically important. However, existing research and tools from both academia and industry mainly relied on limited solutions, such as vulnerable version adjustment and adopting patches, to handle identified vulnerabilities. However, far more flexible and diverse countermeasures have been actively adopted in the open-source communities. A holistic empirical study is needed to explore the prevalence, distribution, preferences, and effectiveness of these diverse strategies. To this end, in this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study on the taxonomy of vulnerability remediation tactics (RT) in OSS projects and investigate their pros and cons. This study addresses this oversight by conducting a comprehensive empirical analysis of 21,187 issues from GitHub, aiming to understand the range and efficacy of remediation tactics within the OSS community. We developed a hierarchical taxonomy of 44 distinct RT and evaluated their effectiveness and costs. Our findings highlight a significant reliance on community-driven strategies, like using alternative libraries and bypassing vulnerabilities, 44% of which are currently unsupported by cutting-edge tools. Additionally, this research exposes the community's preferences for certain fixing approaches by analyzing their acceptance and the reasons for rejection. It also underscores a critical gap in modern vulnerability databases, where 54% of CVEs lack fixing suggestions, a gap that can be significantly mitigated by leveraging the 93% of actionable solutions provided through GitHub issues.

Privacy Bills of Materials: A Transparent Privacy Information Inventory for Collaborative Privacy Notice Generation in Mobile App Development

Privacy regulations mandate that developers must provide authentic and comprehensive privacy notices, e.g., privacy policies or labels, to inform users of their apps' privacy practices. However, due to a lack of knowledge of privacy requirements, developers often struggle to create accurate privacy notices, especially for sophisticated mobile apps with complex features and in crowded development teams. To address these challenges, we introduce Privacy Bills of Materials (PriBOM), a systematic software engineering approach that leverages different development team roles to better capture and coordinate mobile app privacy information. PriBOM facilitates transparency-centric privacy documentation and specific privacy notice creation, enabling traceability and trackability of privacy practices. We present a pre-fill of PriBOM based on static analysis and privacy notice analysis techniques. We demonstrate the perceived usefulness of PriBOM through a human evaluation with 150 diverse participants. Our findings suggest that PriBOM could serve as a significant solution for providing privacy support in DevOps for mobile apps.

"I Don't Use AI for Everything": Exploring Utility, Attitude, and Responsibility of AI-empowered Tools in Software Development

AI-empowered tools have emerged as a transformative force, fundamentally reshaping the software development industry and promising far-reaching impacts across diverse sectors. This study investigates the adoption, impact, and security considerations of AI-empowered tools in the software development process. Through semi-structured interviews with 19 software practitioners from diverse backgrounds, we explore three key aspects: the utility of AI tools, developers' attitudes towards them, and security and privacy responsibilities. Our findings reveal widespread adoption of AI tools across various stages of software development. Developers generally express positive attitudes towards AI, viewing it as an efficiency-enhancing assistant rather than a job replacement threat. However, they also recognized limitations in AI's ability to handle complex, unfamiliar, or highly specialized tasks in software development. Regarding security and privacy, we found varying levels of risk awareness among developers, with larger companies implementing more comprehensive risk management strategies. Our study provides insights into the current state of AI adoption in software development and offers recommendations for practitioners, organizations, AI providers, and regulatory bodies to effectively navigate the integration of AI in the software industry.

A^3-CodGen: A Repository-Level Code Generation Framework for Code Reuse with Local-Aware, Global-Aware, and Third-Party-Library-Aware

LLM-based code generation tools are essential to help developers in the software development process. Existing tools often disconnect with the working context, i.e., the code repository, causing the generated code to be not similar to human developers. In this paper, we propose a novel code generation framework, dubbed A^3-CodGen, to harness information within the code repository to generate code with fewer potential logical errors, code redundancy, and library-induced compatibility issues. We identify three types of representative information for the code repository: local-aware information from the current code file, global-aware information from other code files, and third-party-library information. Results demonstrate that by adopting the A^3-CodGen framework, we successfully extract, fuse, and feed code repository information into the LLM, generating more accurate, efficient, and highly reusable code. The effectiveness of our framework is further underscored by generating code with a higher reuse rate, compared to human developers. This research contributes significantly to the field of code generation, providing developers with a more powerful tool to address the evolving demands in software development in practice.

Neural Architecture Search of Hybrid Models for NPU-CIM Heterogeneous AR/VR Devices

Low-Latency and Low-Power Edge AI is essential for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality applications. Recent advances show that hybrid models, combining convolution layers (CNN) and transformers (ViT), often achieve superior accuracy/performance tradeoff on various computer vision and machine learning (ML) tasks. However, hybrid ML models can pose system challenges for latency and energy-efficiency due to their diverse nature in dataflow and memory access patterns. In this work, we leverage the architecture heterogeneity from Neural Processing Units (NPU) and Compute-In-Memory (CIM) and perform diverse execution schemas to efficiently execute these hybrid models. We also introduce H4H-NAS, a Neural Architecture Search framework to design efficient hybrid CNN/ViT models for heterogeneous edge systems with both NPU and CIM. Our H4H-NAS approach is powered by a performance estimator built with NPU performance results measured on real silicon, and CIM performance based on industry IPs. H4H-NAS searches hybrid CNN/ViT models with fine granularity and achieves significant (up to 1.34%) top-1 accuracy improvement on ImageNet dataset. Moreover, results from our Algo/HW co-design reveal up to 56.08% overall latency and 41.72% energy improvements by introducing such heterogeneous computing over baseline solutions. The framework guides the design of hybrid network architectures and system architectures of NPU+CIM heterogeneous systems.

Incremental Context-free Grammar Inference in Black Box Settings

Black-box context-free grammar inference presents a significant challenge in many practical settings due to limited access to example programs. The state-of-the-art methods, Arvada and Treevada, employ heuristic approaches to generalize grammar rules, initiating from flat parse trees and exploring diverse generalization sequences. We have observed that these approaches suffer from low quality and readability, primarily because they process entire example strings, adding to the complexity and substantially slowing down computations. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel method that segments example strings into smaller units and incrementally infers the grammar. Our approach, named Kedavra, has demonstrated superior grammar quality (enhanced precision and recall), faster runtime, and improved readability through empirical comparison.

Bridging Design and Development with Automated Declarative UI Code Generation

Declarative UI frameworks have gained widespread adoption in mobile app development, offering benefits such as improved code readability and easier maintenance. Despite these advantages, the process of translating UI designs into functional code remains challenging and time-consuming. Recent advancements in multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have shown promise in directly generating mobile app code from user interface (UI) designs. However, the direct application of MLLMs to this task is limited by challenges in accurately recognizing UI components and comprehensively capturing interaction logic. To address these challenges, we propose DeclarUI, an automated approach that synergizes computer vision (CV), MLLMs, and iterative compiler-driven optimization to generate and refine declarative UI code from designs. DeclarUI enhances visual fidelity, functional completeness, and code quality through precise component segmentation, Page Transition Graphs (PTGs) for modeling complex inter-page relationships, and iterative optimization. In our evaluation, DeclarUI outperforms baselines on React Native, a widely adopted declarative UI framework, achieving a 96.8% PTG coverage rate and a 98% compilation success rate. Notably, DeclarUI demonstrates significant improvements over state-of-the-art MLLMs, with a 123% increase in PTG coverage rate, up to 55% enhancement in visual similarity scores, and a 29% boost in compilation success rate. We further demonstrate DeclarUI's generalizability through successful applications to Flutter and ArkUI frameworks.

A Solution toward Transparent and Practical AI Regulation: Privacy Nutrition Labels for Open-source Generative AI-based Applications

The rapid development and widespread adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence-based (GAI) applications have greatly enriched our daily lives, benefiting people by enhancing creativity, personalizing experiences, improving accessibility, and fostering innovation and efficiency across various domains. However, along with the development of GAI applications, concerns have been raised about transparency in their privacy practices. Traditional privacy policies often fail to effectively communicate essential privacy information due to their complexity and length, and open-source community developers often neglect privacy practices even more. Only 12.2% of examined open-source GAI apps provide a privacy policy. To address this, we propose a regulation-driven GAI Privacy Label and introduce Repo2Label, a novel framework for automatically generating these labels based on code repositories. Our user study indicates a common endorsement of the proposed GAI privacy label format. Additionally, Repo2Label achieves a precision of 0.81, recall of 0.88, and F1-score of 0.84 based on the benchmark dataset, significantly outperforming the developer self-declared privacy notices. We also discuss the common regulatory (in)compliance of open-source GAI apps, comparison with other privacy notices, and broader impacts to different stakeholders. Our findings suggest that Repo2Label could serve as a significant tool for bolstering the privacy transparency of GAI apps and make them more practical and responsible.

A Large-scale Investigation of Semantically Incompatible APIs behind Compatibility Issues in Android Apps

Application Programming Interface (API) incompatibility is a long-standing issue in Android application development. The rapid evolution of Android APIs results in a significant number of API additions, removals, and changes between adjacent versions. Unfortunately, this high frequency of alterations may lead to compatibility issues, often without adequate notification to developers regarding these changes. Although researchers have proposed some work on detecting compatibility issues caused by changes in API signatures, they often overlook compatibility issues stemming from sophisticated semantic changes. In response to this challenge, we conducted a large-scale discovery of incompatible APIs in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) by leveraging static analysis and pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) across adjacent versions. We systematically formulate the problem and propose a unified framework to detect incompatible APIs, especially for semantic changes. It's worth highlighting that our approach achieves a 0.83 F1-score in identifying semantically incompatible APIs in the Android framework. Ultimately, our approach detects 5,481 incompatible APIs spanning from version 4 to version 33. We further demonstrate its effectiveness in supplementing the state-of-the-art methods in detecting a broader spectrum of compatibility issues (+92.3%) that have been previously overlooked.

LMDX: Language Model-based Document Information Extraction and Localization

Large Language Models (LLM) have revolutionized Natural Language Processing (NLP), improving state-of-the-art and exhibiting emergent capabilities across various tasks. However, their application in extracting information from visually rich documents, which is at the core of many document processing workflows and involving the extraction of key entities from semi-structured documents, has not yet been successful. The main obstacles to adopting LLMs for this task include the absence of layout encoding within LLMs, which is critical for high quality extraction, and the lack of a grounding mechanism to localize the predicted entities within the document. In this paper, we introduce Language Model-based Document Information Extraction and Localization (LMDX), a methodology to reframe the document information extraction task for a LLM. LMDX enables extraction of singular, repeated, and hierarchical entities, both with and without training data, while providing grounding guarantees and localizing the entities within the document. Finally, we apply LMDX to the PaLM 2-S and Gemini Pro LLMs and evaluate it on VRDU and CORD benchmarks, setting a new state-of-the-art and showing how LMDX enables the creation of high quality, data-efficient parsers.

Multi-Static ISAC based on Network-Assisted Full-Duplex Cell-Free Networks: Performance Analysis and Duplex Mode Optimization

Multi-static integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology, which can achieve a wider coverage range and avoid self-interference, is an important trend for the future development of ISAC. Existing multi-static ISAC designs are unable to support the asymmetric uplink (UL)/downlink (DL) communication requirements in the scenario while simultaneously achieving optimal sensing performance. This paper proposes a design for multi-static ISAC based on network-assisted full-duplex (NAFD) cell-free networks can well solve the above problems. Under this design, closed-form expressions for the individual comunication rate and localization error rate are derived under imperfect channel state information, which are respectively utilized to assess the communication and sensing performances. Then, we propose a deep Q-network-based accesss point (AP) duplex mode optimization algorithm to obtain the trade-off between communication and sensing from the UL and DL perspectives of the APs. Simulation results demonstrate that the NAFD-based ISAC system proposed in this paper can achieve significantly better communication performance than other ISAC systems while ensuring minimal impact on sensing performance. Then, we validate the accuracy of the derived closed-form expressions. Furthermore, the proposed optimization algorithm achieves performance comparable to that of the exhaustion method with low complexity.
