DEFT: Differentiable Branched Discrete Elastic Rods for Modeling Furcated DLOs in Real-Time

Autonomous wire harness assembly requires robots to manipulate complex branched cables with high precision and reliability. A key challenge in automating this process is predicting how these flexible and branched structures behave under manipulation. Without accurate predictions, it is difficult for robots to reliably plan or execute assembly operations. While existing research has made progress in modeling single-threaded Deformable Linear Objects (DLOs), extending these approaches to Branched Deformable Linear Objects (BDLOs) presents fundamental challenges. The junction points in BDLOs create complex force interactions and strain propagation patterns that cannot be adequately captured by simply connecting multiple single-DLO models. To address these challenges, this paper presents Differentiable discrete branched Elastic rods for modeling Furcated DLOs in real-Time (DEFT), a novel framework that combines a differentiable physics-based model with a learning framework to: 1) accurately model BDLO dynamics, including dynamic propagation at junction points and grasping in the middle of a BDLO, 2) achieve efficient computation for real-time inference, and 3) enable planning to demonstrate dexterous BDLO manipulation. A comprehensive series of real-world experiments demonstrates DEFT's efficacy in terms of accuracy, computational speed, and generalizability compared to state-of-the-art alternatives. Tuning Higher Order Structure in Colloidal Fluids

Colloidal particles self assemble into a wide range of structures under external AC electric fields due to induced dipolar interactions [Yethiraj and Van Blaaderen Nature 421 513 (2003)]. As a result of these dipolar interactions, at low volume fraction the system is modulated between a hard-sphere like state (in the case of zero applied field) and a "string fluid" upon application of the field. Using both particle-resolved experiments and Brownian dynamics simulations, we investigate the emergence of the string fluid with a variety of structural measures including two-body and higher-order correlations. The higher-order structure we probe using three-body spatial correlation functions and a many-body approach based on minimum energy clusters of a dipolar-Lennard-Jones system. This yields a series of geometrically distinct minimum energy clusters upon increasing the strength of the dipolar interaction, which are echoed in the higher-order structure of the colloidal fluids we study here. We find good agreement between experiment and simulation at the two-body level, although some discrepancies are found at higher field strength, where the system falls out of equilibrium. Higher-order correlations exhibit reasonable agreement between experiment and simulation, again with more discrepancy at higher field strength for three--body correlation functions. At higher field strength, the cluster population in our experiments and simulations is dominated by the minimum energy clusters for all sizes $8 \leq m \leq 12$. The agreement that we find here is notable considering that there is no fit parameter in our mapping between experiment and simulation.

Spiking hierarchy in an adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire network synchronization

Neuronal network synchronization has received wide interests. Network connection structure is known to play a key role in its synchronization. In the present manuscript, we study the influence of initial membrane potentials together with network topology on bursting synchronization, in particular the sequential spiking order in stabilized inter bursts. We find a hierarchical phenomenon on spiking order. We grade neurons into different layers: primary neurons are those initiate the spike and lower-layer neurons are then determined via network connections successively. This constructs a directed graph to indicate spiking propagation among different layers of neurons. Neurons in upper layers spike earlier than those in lower layers. More interestingly, we find that among the same layer, neuron spiking order is mainly associated with stimuli they receive from upper layer via network connections; more stimuli leads to earlier spiking. Furthermore, we find that with effectively the same stimuli from upper layer, neurons with less connections spike earlier.
