PMU-Based Estimation of Dynamic State Jacobian Matrix and Dynamic System State Matrix in Ambient Conditions

In this paper, a hybrid measurement- and model-based method is proposed which can estimate the dynamic state Jacobian matrix and the dynamic system state matrix in near real-time utilizing statistical properties extracted from PMU measurements. The proposed method can be used to detect and identify network topology changes that have not been reflected in an assumed network model. Additionally, an application of the estimated system state matrix in online dynamic stability monitoring is presented.

Estimating Dynamic Load Parameters from Ambient PMU Measurements

In this paper, a novel method to estimate dynamic load parameters via ambient PMU measurements is proposed. Unlike conventional parameter identification methods, the proposed algorithm does not require the existence of large disturbance to power systems, and is able to provide up-to-date dynamic load parameters consistently and continuously. The accuracy and robustness of the method are demonstrated through numerical simulations.

PMU-Based Estimation of Dynamic State Jacobian Matrix

In this paper, a hybrid measurement- and model-based method is proposed which can estimate the dynamic state Jacobian matrix in near real-time. The proposed method is computationally efficient and robust to the variation of network topology. A numerical example is given to show that the proposed method is able to provide good estimation for the dynamic state Jacobian matrix and is superior to the model-based method under undetectable network topology change. The proposed method may also help identify big discrepancy in the assumed network model.

A Framework for Dynamic Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Volatile Wind Power

We propose a framework employing stochastic differential equations to facilitate the long-term stability analysis of power grids with intermittent wind power generations. This framework takes into account the discrete dynamics which play a critical role in the long-term stability analysis, incorporates the model of wind speed with different probability distributions, and also develops an approximation methodology (by a deterministic hybrid model) for the stochastic hybrid model to reduce the computational burden brought about by the uncertainty of wind power. The theoretical and numerical studies show that a deterministic hybrid model can provide an accurate trajectory approximation and stability assessments for the stochastic hybrid model under mild conditions. In addition, we discuss the critical cases that the deterministic hybrid model fails and discover that these cases are caused by a violation of the proposed sufficient conditions. Such discussion complements the proposed framework and methodology and also reaffirms the importance of the stochastic hybrid model when the system operates close to its stability limit.

PMU-Based Estimation of Dynamic State Jacobian Matrix

In this paper, a hybrid measurement and model-based method is proposed which can estimate the dynamic state Jacobian matrix in near real-time. The proposed method is computationally efficient and robust to the variation of network topology. Since the estimated Jacobian matrix carries significant information on system dynamics and states, it can be utilized in various applications. In particular, two application of the estimated Jacobian matrix in online oscillation analysis, stability monitoring and control are illustrated with numerical examples. In addition, a side-product of the proposed method can facilitate model validation by approximating the damping of generators.

Data-Driven Diagnostics of Mechanism and Source of Sustained Oscillations

Sustained oscillations observed in power systems can damage equipment, degrade the power quality and increase the risks of cascading blackouts. There are several mechanisms that can give rise to oscillations, each requiring different countermeasure to suppress or eliminate the oscillation. This work develops mathematical framework for analysis of sustained oscillations and identifies statistical signatures of each mechanism, based on which a novel oscillation diagnosis method is developed via real-time processing of phasor measurement units (PMUs) data. Case studies show that the proposed method can accurately identify the exact mechanism for sustained oscillation, and meanwhile provide insightful information to locate the oscillation sources.

Quasi Steady-State Model for Power System Stability: Limitations, Analysis and a Remedy

The quasi steady-state (QSS) model tries to reach a good compromise between accuracy and efficiency in long-term stability analysis. However, the QSS model is unable to provide correct approximations and stability assessment for the long-term stability model consistently. In this paper, some numerical examples in which the QSS model was stable while the long-term stability model underwent instabilities are presented with analysis in nonlinear system framework. At the same time, a hybrid model which serves as a remedy to the QSS model is proposed according to causes for failure of the QSS model and dynamic mechanisms of long-term instabilities. Numerical examples are given to show that the developed hybrid model can successfully capture unstable behaviors of the long-term stability model while the QSS model fails.

Application of Pseudo-Transient Continuation Method in Dynamic Stability Analysis

In this paper, pseudo-transient continuation method has been modified and implemented in power system long-term stability analysis. This method is a middle ground between integration and steady state calculation, thus is a good compromise between accuracy and efficiency. Pseudo-transient continuation method can be applied in the long-term stability model directly to accelerate simulation speed and can also be implemented in the QSS model to overcome numerical difficulties. Numerical examples show that pseudo-transient continuation method can provide correct approximations for the long-term stability model in terms of trajectories and stability assessment.

Analytical Studies of Quasi Steady-State Model in Power System Long-Term Stability Analysis

In this paper, a theoretical foundation for the Quasi Steady-State (QSS) model in power system long-term stability analysis is developed. Sufficient conditions under which the QSS model gives accurate approximations of the long-term stability model in terms of trajectory and !-limit set are derived. These sufficient conditions provide some physical insights regarding the reason for the failure of the QSS model. Additionally, several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the analytical results derived.

Some issues with Quasi-Steady State Model in Long-term Stability

The Quasi Steady-State (QSS) model of long-term dynamics relies on the idea of time-scale decomposition. Assuming that the fast variables are infinitely fast and are stable in the long-term, the QSS model replaces the differential equations of transient dynamics by their equilibrium equations to reduce complexity and increase computation efficiency. Although the idea of QSS model is intuitive, its theoretical foundation has not yet been developed. In this paper, several counter examples in which the QSS model fails to provide a correct approximation of the complete dynamic model in power system are presented and the reasons of the failure are explained from the viewpoint of nonlinear analysis.
