Topological character of the antiferromagnetic EuMg$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$

Antiferromagnetic EuM$_{2}$Pn$_{2}$ compounds, where M is a metal element and Pn is a pnictogen element, have been recognized as candidates for realizing a topologically nontrivial electronic structure. In this paper, we focus on EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$, whose topological nature still remains unclear. We present a comprehensive study based on several experimental and theoretical techniques. Magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat capacity measurements confirm the existence of an antiferromagnetic ordering. The electronic band structure was investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), supported by ab initio calculations. ARPES measurement reveals that the electronic structure of this system is dominated by linearly dispersive hole-like bands near the Fermi level. Theoretical analyses of the electronic band structure indicates that EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$ is a strong topological insulator, which should be reflected in the presence of a metallic surface state. We also theoretically examine the magnetic-field-induced anomalous Hall conductivity, confirming previously reported observations.

Hydrogen induces chiral conduction channels in the topological magnet

Chirality, a characteristic handedness that distinguishes 'left' from 'right', cuts widely across all of nature$^1$, from the structure of DNA$^2$ to opposite chirality of particles and antiparticles$^3$. In condensed matter chiral fermions have been identified in Weyl semimetals$^4$ through their unconventional electrodynamics arising from 'axial' charge imbalance between chiral Weyl nodes of topologically nontrivial electronic bands. Up to now it has been challenging or impossible to create transport channels of Weyl fermions in a single material that could be easily configured for advancing chiral logic or spintronics$^{5,6}$. Here we generate chirality-directed conduction channels in inversion-symmetric Weyl ferromagnet (FM) $MnSb_2Te_4$, emergent from a deep connection between chirality in reciprocal and real space. We alter the bandstructure on-demand with an intake and a subsequent release of ionic hydrogen ($H^+$) $-$ a process we show to induce the tilt and rotation of Weyl bands. The transformed Weyl FM states feature a doubled Curie temperature $\geq50K$ and an enhanced angular transport chirality synchronous with a rare field-antisymmetric longitudinal resistance $-$ a low-field tunable 'chiral switch' that roots in the interplay of Berry curvature$^7$, chiral anomaly$^8$ and hydrogen-engendered mutation of Weyl nodes.

Structural and magnetic properties of molecular beam epitaxy (MnSb2Te4)x(Sb2Te3)1-x topological materials with exceedingly high Curie temperature

Tuning magnetic properties of magnetic topological materials is of interest to realize elusive physical phenomena such as quantum anomalous hall effect (QAHE) at higher temperatures and design topological spintronic devices. However, current topological materials exhibit Curie temperature (TC) values far below room temperature. In recent years, significant progress has been made to control and optimize TC, particularly through defect engineering of these structures. Most recently we showed evidence of TC values up to 80K for (MnSb2Te4)x(Sb2Te3)1-x, where x is greater than or equal to 0.7 and less than or equal to 0.85, by controlling the compositions and Mn content in these structures. Here we show further enhancement of the TC, as high as 100K, by maintaining high Mn content and reducing the growth rate from 0.9 nm/min to 0.5 nm/min. Derivative curves reveal the presence of two TC components contributing to the overall value and propose TC1 and TC2 have distinct origins: excess Mn in SLs and Mn in Sb2-yMnyTe3QLs alloys, respectively. In pursuit of elucidating the mechanisms promoting higher Curie temperature values in this system, we show evidence of structural disorder where Mn is occupying not only Sb sites but also Te sites, providing evidence of significant excess Mn and a new crystal structure:(Mn1+ySb2-yTe4)x(Sb2-yMnyTe3)1-x. Our work shows progress in understanding how to control magnetic defects to enhance desired magnetic properties and the mechanism promoting these high TC in magnetic topological materials such as (Mn1+ySb2-yTe4)x(Sb2-yMnyTe3)1-x.

Influence of microstructure on superconductivity in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ and evidence for a new parent phase K$_2$Fe$_7$Se$_8$

The search for new superconducting materials has been spurred on by the discovery of iron-based superconductors whose structure and composition is qualitatively different from the cuprates. The study of one such material, K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ with a critical temperature of 32 K, is made more difficult by the fact that it separates into two phases: a dominant antiferromagnetic insulating phase with a K$_2$Fe$_4$Se$_5$ structure, and a minority superconducting phase whose precise structure is as yet unclear. Here we perform electrical and magnetization measurements, scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning tunnelling microscopy on K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ crystals prepared under different quenching processes to better understand the relationship between its microstructure and its superconducting phase. We identify a 3D network of superconducting filaments within this material and present evidence to suggest that the superconducting phase consists of a single Fe vacancy for every eight Fe-sites arranged in a $\sqrt{10}\times\sqrt{8}$ parallelogram structure.

Tunable magnetic domains in ferrimagnetic MnSb$_2$Te$_4$

Highly tunable properties make Mn(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_4$ a rich playground for exploring the interplay between band topology and magnetism: On one end, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is an antiferromagnetic topological insulator, while the magnetic structure of MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ (MST) can be tuned between antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic. Motivated to control electronic properties through real-space magnetic textures, we use magnetic force microscopy (MFM) to image the domains of ferrimagnetic MST. We find that magnetic field tunes between stripe and bubble domain morphologies, raising the possibility of topological spin textures. Moreover, we combine in situ transport with domain manipulation and imaging to both write MST device properties and directly measure the scaling of the Hall response with domain area. This work demonstrates measurement of the local anomalous Hall response using MFM, and opens the door to reconfigurable domain-based devices in the M(B,S)T family.

Competition of Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy of Uranium Layers and Zig-Zag Chains in UNi$_{0.34}$Ge$_2$ Single Crystals

Structural and thermodynamic properties of single-crystalline UNi$_{1-x}$Ge$_2$ with $x$\,=\,0.66 have been investigated by measuring magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. The measurements revealed the emergence of a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments below the N{é}el temperature $T_{\rm N}$\,=\,45.5\,K and the existence of two easy axes in the studied compound, namely $b$ and $c$, which correspond to the planes of the uranium zig-zag chains. Magnetic field applied along these two crystallographic directions induces in the system a first-order metamagnetic phase transition (from antiferromagnetism to field-polarized paramagnetism), and the width of the magnetic hysteresis associated with that transition reaches as much as 40 kOe at the lowest temperatures. A magnetic phase diagram developed from the experimental data showed that the metastable region associated with that magnetic hysteresis forms a funnel that narrows toward the N{é}el point in zero magnetic field. The four-layer Ising model has successfully predicted the collinear antiferromagnetic structure in UNi$_{0.34}$Ge$_2$ (known from earlier reports), its magnetic phase diagram, and temperature and field variations of its magnetization. Moreover, it suggests that the first-order phase transition extends down to zero magnetic field, although it is barely detectable in the experiments performed in low magnetic fields. According to this model, the second-order phase transition occurs in the compound only in zero field.

Reaching the equilibrium state of frustrated triangular Ising magnet Ca3Co2O6

Ca3Co2O6 is a frustrated magnet consisting of a triangular arrangement of chains of Ising spins. It shows regular magnetization steps vs magnetic field every 1.2 T that are metastable with very slow dynamics. This has puzzled the community for many years and given rise to numerous potential theories. Here we approach the problem by seeking the elusive magnetic equilibrium state at T = 2 K. To this end, we explore two approaches: (1) bypassing the slow dynamics produced by changing fields by instead field-cooling directly to the target temperature, and (2) quantum annealing in transverse magnetic fields. While we observe no measurable effect of the quantum annealing in fields up to 7 T, which is likely due to the large Ising anisotropy of Co spins in this material, we find that for the field cooling in longitudinal fields we achieve the predicted equilibrium 1/3 magnetization. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the ground state phase diagram and we also simulate the quantum annealing process and find good agreement between experiment and theory. Thus we present an investigation of the elusive ground state properties of the canonical frustrated triangular system Ca3Co2O6.

Field-tunable toroidal moment in a chiral-lattice magnet

A toroidal dipole moment appears independent of the electric and magnetic dipole moment in the multipole expansion of electrodynamics. It arises naturally from vortex-like arrangements of spins. Observing and controlling spontaneous long-range orders of toroidal moments are highly promising for spintronics but remain challenging. Here we demonstrate that a vortex-like spin configuration with a staggered arrangement of toroidal moments, a ferritoroidal state, is realized in a chiral triangular-lattice magnet BaCoSiO4. Upon applying a magnetic field, we observe multi-stair toroidal transitions correlating directly with metamagnetic transitions. We establish a first-principles microscopic Hamiltonian that explains both the formation of toroidal states and the metamagnetic toroidal transition as a combined effect of the magnetic frustration and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions allowed by the crystallographic chirality in BaCoSiO4.

High magnetic field induced crossover from the Kondo to Fermi liquid behavior in 1$T$-VTe$_{2}$ single crystals

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of metallic 1$T$-VTe$_{2}$ single crystals were investigated at temperatures from 1.3 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Upon applying a high magnetic field, it is found that the electrical resistivity displays a crossover from the logarithmic divergence of the single-impurity Kondo effect to the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. The Brillouin scale of the negative magnetoresistivity above the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm{K}}$ = 12 K indicates that the Kondo features originate from intercalated V ions, with $S$ = 1/2. Both magnetic susceptibility and Hall effect show an anomaly around $T_{\rm{K}}$. By using the modified Hamann expression we successfully describe the temperature-dependent resistivity under various magnetic fields, which shows the characteristic peak below $T_{\rm{K}}$ due to the splitting of the Kondo resonance.

Magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of $δ$-phase UZr$_2$

Alloys of hexagonal $δ$-phase UZr$_2$ have been synthesized and studied by means of heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity measurements, for the first time, at temperatures from 1.8 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 8 T. The weak temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the small value of both Seebeck (0.75 $μ$V/K at room temperature) and of the Sommerfeld coefficient (13.5 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$) point to 5$f$-electrons in this material having a delocalized nature. The electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance indicate the presence of significant electronic disorder in $δ$-UZr$_2$, consistent with the disorder in its crystal structure. Density functional theory calculations have been performed and compared to experimental results.

Effect of dilute magnetism in a topological insulator

Three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) have emerged as a unique state of quantum matter and generated enormous interests in condensed matter physics. The surfaces of a three dimensional (3D) TI are composed of a massless Dirac cone, which is characterized by the Z2 topological invariant. Introduction of magnetism on the surface of TI is essential to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and other novel magneto-electric phenomena. Here, by using a combination of first principles calculations, magneto-transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and time resolved ARPES (tr-ARPES), we study the electronic properties of Gadolinium (Gd) doped Sb2Te3. Our study shows that Gd doped Sb2Te3 is a spin-orbit-induced bulk band-gap material, whose surface is characterized by a single topological surface state. We further demonstrate that introducing diluted 4f-electron magnetism into the Sb2Te3 topological insulator system by the Gd doping creates surface magnetism in this system. Our results provide a new platform to investigate the interaction between dilute magnetism and topology in doped topological materials.

Evidence for the Alternating Next-Nearest Neighbor model in the dynamic behavior of a frustrated antiferromagnet

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) enables us to study dynamics of antiferromagnets. Using coherent soft X-ray diffraction, we resonantly probe Mn and Co Bragg peaks in the frustrated magnetic chain compound Lu2CoMnO6 significantly below the Neel temperature. Bragg peaks of incommensurate order slide towards commensurate 'up up down down' order with decreasing temperature. Antiferromagnetic inhomogeneities produce speckle within the Bragg peaks, whose dynamics are probed by XPCS and compared to the classic Axial Next-Nearest Neighbor Interaction model of frustration. The data supports a novel model prediction: with decreasing temperature the dynamics become faster.

Observation of multiple Dirac states in a magnetic topological material EuMg2Bi2

Initiated by the discovery of topological insulators, topologically non-trivial materials, more specifically topological semimetals and metals have emerged as new frontiers in the field of quantum materials. In this work, we perform a systematic measurement of EuMg2Bi2, a compound with antiferromagnetic transition temperature at 6.7 K, observed via electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat capacity measurements. By utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in concurrence with first-principles calculations, we observe Dirac cones at the corner and the zone center of the Brillouin zone. From our experimental data, multiple Dirac states at G and K points are observed, where the Dirac nodes are located at different energy positions from the Fermi level. Our experimental investigations of detailed electronic structure as well as transport measurements of EuMg2Bi2 suggest that it could potentially provide a platform to study the interplay between topology and magnetism.

Magnetic properties of double perovskite $Ln_2$CoIrO$_6$ ($Ln$ = Eu, Tb, Ho): hetero-tri-spin $3d$-$5d$-$4f$ systems

The field of double perovskites is now advancing to three magnetic elements on the A, B and B$'$ sites. A series of iridium-based double perovskite compounds, $Ln_2$CoIrO$_6$ ($Ln$ = Eu, Tb, Ho) with three magnetic elements were synthesized as polycrystalline samples. The compounds crystalize in monoclinic structures with the space group $P2_1/n$. Magnetic properties of these hetero-tri-spin $3d$-$5d$-$4f$ systems were studied by magnetic susceptibility and field dependent magnetization in both DC and pulsed magnetic fields. All these compounds show ferrimagnetic transitions at temperatures $T_C$ above 100 K, which are attributable to antiferromagnetic coupling between Co$^{2+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ spins. For Eu$_2$CoIrO$_6$, the magnetic properties are similar to those of La$_2$CoIrO$_6$. The Eu$^{3+}$ spins show Van Vleck paramagnetism that don't significantly interact with transition-metal cations. By contrast, Tb$_2$CoIrO$_6$ and Ho$_2$CoIrO$_6$ reveal a second transition to antiferromagnetic order below a lower temperature $T_N$. The temperature-induced ferrimagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition might be explained by a spin-reorientation transition. Moreover, a magnetic-field-induced spin-flop transition with a small hysteresis was observed below $T_N$ in these two compounds. The magnetic moment of all three compounds do not saturate up to 60 T at low temperatures. Moderate magnetocaloric effect was also observed in all three compounds. Our results should motivate further investigation of the spin configuration on single crystals of these iridium-based double perovskites.

Measurement of the angle dependence of magnetostriction in pulsed magnetic fields using a piezoelectric strain gauge

We present a high resolution method for measuring magnetostriction in millisecond pulsed magnetic fields at cryogenic temperatures with a sensitivity of $1.11\times10^{-11}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$. The sample is bonded to a thin piezoelectric plate, such that when the sample's length changes, it strains the piezoelectric and induces a voltage change. This method is more sensitive than a fiber-Bragg grating method. It measures two axes simultaneously instead of one. The gauge is small and versatile, functioning in DC and millisecond pulsed magnetic fields. We demonstrate its use by measuring the magnetostriction of Ca$_3$Co$_{1.03}$Mn$_{0.97}$O$_6$ single crystals in pulsed magnetic fields. By comparing our data to new and previously published results from a fiber-Bragg grating magnetostriction setup, we confirm that this method detects magnetostriction effects. We also demonstrate the small size and versatility of this technique by measuring angle dependence with respect to the applied magnetic field in a rotator probe in 65 T millisecond pulsed magnetic fields.

Quantum oscillations in flux-grown SmB6 with embedded aluminum

SmB6 is a candidate topological Kondo insulator that displays surface conduction at low temperatures. Here, we perform torque magnetization measurements as a means to detect de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in SmB6 crystals grown by aluminum flux. We find that dHvA oscillations occur in single crystals containing embedded aluminum, originating from the flux used to synthesize SmB6. Measurements on a sample with multiple, unconnected aluminum inclusions show that aluminum crystallizes in a preferred orientation within the SmB6 cubic lattice. The presence of aluminum is confirmed through bulk susceptibility measurements, but does not show a signature in transport measurements.

Anomalous metamagnetism in the low carrier density Kondo lattice YbRh3Si7

We report complex metamagnetic transitions in single crystals of the new low carrier Kondo antiferromagnet YbRh3Si7. Electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order at T_N = 7.5 K. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the magnetic ground state of YbRh3Si7 is a collinear antiferromagnet where the moments are aligned in the ab plane. With such an ordered state, no metamagnetic transitions are expected when a magnetic field is applied along the c axis. It is therefore surprising that high field magnetization, torque, and resistivity measurements with H||c reveal two metamagnetic transitions at mu_0H_1 = 6.7 T and mu_0H_2 = 21 T. When the field is tilted away from the c axis, towards the ab plane, both metamagnetic transitions are shifted to higher fields. The first metamagnetic transition leads to an abrupt increase in the electrical resistivity, while the second transition is accompanied by a dramatic reduction in the electrical resistivity. Thus, the magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in YbRh3Si7 are strongly coupled. We discuss the origin of the anomalous metamagnetism and conclude that it is related to competition between crystal electric field anisotropy and anisotropic exchange interactions.

Observation of a van Hove singularity and implication for strong coupling induced Cooper pairing in KFe2As2

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) have been investigated on single crystal samples of KFe2As2. A van Hove singularity (vHs) has been directly observed just a few meV below the Fermi level E_F of superconducting KFe2As2, which locates in the middle of the principle axes of the first Brillouin zone. The majority of the density-of-states at E_F, mainly contributed by the proximity effect of the saddle point to E_F, is non-gapped in the superconducting state. Our observation of nodal behavior of the momentum area close to the vHs points, while providing consistent explanations to many exotic behaviours previously observed in this material, suggests Cooper pairing induced by a strong coupling mechanism.
