Essential forward weak KAM solution for the convex Hamilton-Jacobi equation

For a convex, coercive continuous Hamiltonian on a compact closed Riemannian manifold $M$, we construct a unique forward weak KAM solution of \[ H(x, d_x u)=c(H) \] by a vanishing discount approach, where $c(H)$ is the Mañé critical value. We also discuss the dynamical significance of such a special solution.

On the $C^1$ and $C^2$-convergence to weak K.A.M. solutions

We introduce a notion of upper Green regular solutions to the Lax-Oleinik semi-group that is defined on the set of $C^0$ functions of a closed manifold via a Tonelli Lagrangian. Then we prove some weak $C^2$ convergence results to such a solution for a large class of approximated solutions as (1) the discounted solution (see [DFIZ16]); (2) the image of a $C^0$ function by the Lax-Oleinik semi-group; (3) the weak K.A.M. solutions for perturbed cohomology class. This kind of convergence implies the convergence in measure of the second derivatives. Moreover, we provide an example that is not upper Green regular and to which we have $C^1$ convergence but not convergence in measure of the second derivatives.

Discounted Gottschalk-Hedlund theorem

Ergodic optimization and discrete weak KAM theory are two parallel theories with several results in common. For instance, the Mather set is the locus of orbits which minimize the ergodic averages of a given observable. In the favorable cases, the observable is cohomologous to its ergodic minimizing value on the Mather set, and the discrete weak KAM solution plays the role of the transfer function. One possibility of construction of such a coboundary is by using the non linear Lax-Oleinik operator. The other possibility is by using a discounted cohomological equation. It is known that the discounted discrete weak KAM solution converges to some selected weak KAM solution. We show that, in the ergodic optimization case for a coboundary observable over a minimal system, the discounted transfer function converges if and only if the observable is balanced.

On a remarkable example of F. Almgren and H. Federer in the global theory of minimizing geodesics

We present an exposition of a remarkable example attributed to Frederick Almgren Jr. in \cite[Section 5.11]{Federer74} to illustrate the need of certain definitions in the calculus of variations. The Almgren-Federer example, besides its intended goal of illustrating subtle aspects of geometric measure theory, is also a problem in the theory of geodesics. Hence, we wrote an exposition of the beautiful ideas of Almgren and Federer from the point of view of geodesics. In the language of geodesics, Almgren-Federer example constructs metrics in $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^2$, with the property that none of the Tonelli geodesics (geodesics which minimize the length in a homotopy class) are Class-A minimizers in the sense of Morse (any finite length segment in the universal cover minimizes the length between the end points; this is also sometimes given other names). In other words, even if a curve is a minimizer of length among all the curves homotopic to it, by repeating it enough times, we get a closed curve which does not minimize in its homotopy class. In that respect, the example is more dramatic than a better known example due to Hedlund of a metric in $\mathbb{T}^3$ for which only 3 Tonelli minimizers (and their multiples) are Class-A minimizers. For dynamics, the example also illustrates different definitions of `integrable' and clarifies the relation between minimization and hyperbolicity and its interaction with topology.

Convergence of one-dimensional stationary mean field games with vanishing potential

We consider the one-dimensional stationary first-order mean-field game (MFG) system with the coupling between the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the transport equation. In both cases that the coupling is strictly increasing and decreasing with respect to the density of the population, we show that when the potential vanishes the regular solution of MFG system converges to the one of the corresponding integrable MFG system. Furthermore, we obtain the convergence rate of such limit.

Convergence of discrete Aubry-Mather model in the continuous limit

We develop two approximation schemes for solving the cell equation and the discounted cell equation using Aubry-Mather-Fathi theory. The Hamiltonian is supposed to be Tonelli, time-independent , and periodic in space. By Legendre transform it is equivalent to find a fixed point of some nonlinear operator, called Lax-Oleinik operator, which may be discounted or not. By discretizing in time, we are led to solve an additive eigenvalue problem involving a discrete Lax-Oleinik operator. We show how to approximate the effective Hamiltonian and some weak KAM solutions by letting the time step in the discrete model tend to zero. We also obtain a selected discrete weak KAM solution as in [Davini et al 2014] and show it converges to a particular solution of the cell equation. In order to unify the two settings, continuous and discrete , we develop a more general formalism of short-range interactions.

Resonant equilibrium configurations in quasi-periodic media: KAM theory

We develop an a-posteriori KAM theory for the equilibrium equations for quasi-periodic solutions in a quasi-periodic Frenkel-Kontorova model when the frequency of the solutions resonates with the frequencies of the substratum. The KAM theory we develop is very different both in the methods and in the conclusions from the more customary KAM theory for Hamiltonian systems or from the KAM theory in quasi-periodic media for solutions with frequencies which are Diophantine with respect to the frequencies of the media. The main difficulty is that we cannot use transformations (as in the Hamiltonian case) nor Ward identities (as in the case of frequencies Diophantine with those of the media). The technique we use is to add an extra equation that ensures the linearization of the equilibrium equation factorizes. To solve the extra equation requires an extra counterterm. We compare this phenomenon with other phenomena in KAM theory. It seems that this technique could be used in several other problems. As a conclusion, we obtain that the perturbation expansions developed in the previous paper \cite{SuZL15} converge when the potentials are in a codimension one manifold in a space of potentials. The method of proof also leads to efficient (low storage requirements and low operation count) algorithms to compute the quasi-periodic solutions.

Resonant Equilibrium configurations in quasi-periodic media: perturbative expansions

We consider 1-D quasi-periodic Frenkel-Kontorova models. We study the existence of equilibria whose frequency (i.e. the inverse of the density of deposited material) is resonant with the frequencies of the substratum. We study perturbation theory for small potential. We show that there are perturbative expansions to all orders for the quasi-periodic equilibria with resonant frequencies. Under very general conditions, we show that there are at least two such perturbative expansions for equilibria for small values of the parameter. We also develop a dynamical interpretation of the equilibria in these quasi-periodic media. We show that equilibria are orbits of a dynamical system which has very unusual properties. We obtain results on the Lyapunov exponents of the dynamical systems, i.e. the phonon gap of the resonant quasi-periodic equilibria. We show that the equilibria can be pinned even if the gap is zero.

A continuous family of equilibria in ferromagnetic media are ground states

We show that a foliation of equilibria (a continuous family of equilibria whose graph covers all the configuration space) in ferromagnetic models are ground states. The result we prove is very general, and it applies to models with long range interactions and many body. As an application, we consider several models of networks of interacting particles including models of Frenkel-Kontorova type on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and one-dimensional quasi-periodic media. The result above is an analogue of several results in the calculus variations (fields of extremals) and in PDE's. Since the models we consider are discrete and long range, new proofs need to be given. We also note that the main hypothesis of our result (the existence of foliations of equilibria) is the conclusion (using KAM theory) of several recent papers. Hence, we obtain that the KAM solutions recently established are minimizers when the interaction is ferromagnetic (and transitive).

Weak KAM theory for general Hamilton-Jacobi equations I: the solution semigroup under proper conditions

We consider the following evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation with initial condition: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_tu(x,t)+H(x,u(x,t),\partial_xu(x,t))=0,\\ u(x,0)=ϕ(x). \end{cases} \end{equation*} Under some assumptions on $H(x,u,p)$ with respect to $p$ and $u$, we provide a variational principle on the evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation. By introducing an implicitly defined solution semigroup, we extend Fathi's weak KAM theory to certain more general cases, in which $H$ explicitly depends on the unknown function $u$. As an application, we show the viscosity solution of the evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation with initial condition tends asymptotically to the weak KAM solution of the following stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equation: \begin{equation*} H(x,u(x),\partial_xu(x))=0. \end{equation*}.

Weak KAM theorem for Hamilton-Jacobi equations

In this paper, we generalize weak KAM theorem from positive Lagrangian systems to "proper" Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We introduce an implicitly defined solution semigroup of evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equations. By exploring the properties of the solution semigroup, we prove the convergence of solution semigroup and existence of weak KAM solutions for stationary equations: \begin{equation*} H(x, u, d_x u)=0. \end{equation*}

KAM theory for quasi-periodic equilibria in 1-D quasiperiodic media

We consider Frenkel-Kontorova models corresponding to 1 dimensional quasicrystals. We present a KAM theory for quasi-periodic equilibria. The theorem presented has an \emph{a-posteriori} format. We show that, given an approximate solution of the equilibrium equation, which satisfies some appropriate non-degeneracy conditions, then, there is a true solution nearby. This solution is locally unique. Such a-posteriori theorems can be used to validate numerical computations and also lead immediately to several consequences a) Existence to all orders of perturbative expansion and their convergence b) Bootstrap for regularity c) An efficient method to compute the breakdown of analyticity. Since the system does not admit an easy dynamical formulation, the method of proof is based on developing several identities. These identities also lead to very efficient algorithms.
