Energy Efficient HARQ for Ultrareliability via Novel Outage Probability Bound and Geometric Programming

Hybrid automatic repeat 1 request (HARQ) is a key enabler for ultrareliable communications. This paper optimizes transmit power for the initial transmission and the subsequent retransmissions of HARQ with either incremental redundancy or Chase combining, aiming to minimize the expected energy consumption given the target outage probability and the target latency. The main challenge is due to the fact that the outage probability is a complicated function of the power variables which are nested in successive convolutions. The existing works mostly use a classic upper bound to approximate the outage probability by assuming unbounded transmit power, then convert the original problem to a geometric programming (GP) problem. In contrast, we propose a novel and much tighter upper bound by taking the practical power limit into consideration. The new bound and the resulting new GP method are further extended to a broader group of channel models with various fading, multiple antennas, and multiple receivers. As shown in simulations, the GP method based on the new bound significantly outperforms the existing strategies that either fix transmit power or optimize power by the classic bounding technique.

Channel Estimation for Hybrid Massive MIMO Systems with Adaptive-Resolution ADCs

Achieving high channel estimation accuracy and reducing hardware cost as well as power dissipation constitute substantial challenges in the design of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To resolve these difficulties, sophisticated pilot designs have been conceived for the family of energy-efficient hybrid analog-digital (HAD) beamforming architecture relying on adaptive-resolution analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). In this paper, we jointly optimize the pilot sequences, the number of RADC quantization bits and the hybrid receiver combiner in the uplink of multiuser massive MIMO systems. We solve the associated mean square error (MSE) minimization problem of channel estimation in the context of correlated Rayleigh fading channels subject to practical constraints. The associated mixed-integer problem is quite challenging due to the nonconvex nature of the objective function and of the constraints. By relying on advanced fractional programming (FP) techniques, we first recast the original problem into a more tractable yet equivalent form, which allows the decoupling of the fractional objective function. We then conceive a pair of novel algorithms for solving the resultant problems for codebook-based and codebook-free pilot schemes, respectively. To reduce the design complexity, we also propose a simplified algorithm for the codebook-based pilot scheme. Our simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithms over the relevant state-of-the-art benchmark schemes.

Superior Photo-carrier Diffusion Dynamics in Organic-inorganic Hybrid Perovskites Revealed by Spatiotemporal Conductivity Imaging

The outstanding performance of organic-inorganic metal trihalide solar cells benefits from the exceptional photo-physical properties of both electrons and holes in the material. Here, we directly probe the free-carrier dynamics in Cs-doped FAPbI3 thin films by spatiotemporal photoconductivity imaging. Using charge transport layers to selectively quench one type of carriers, we show that the two relaxation times on the order of 1 microsecond and 10 microseconds correspond to the lifetimes of electrons and holes in FACsPbI3, respectively. Strikingly, the diffusion mapping indicates that the difference in electron/hole lifetimes is largely compensated by their disparate mobility. Consequently, the long diffusion lengths (3 ~ 5 micrometers) of both carriers are comparable to each other, a feature closely related to the unique charge trapping and de-trapping processes in hybrid trihalide perovskites. Our results unveil the origin of superior diffusion dynamics in this material, crucially important for solar-cell applications.

Stochastic Hybrid Combining Design for Quantized Massive MIMO Systems

Both the power-dissipation and cost of massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems may be substantially reduced by using low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (LADCs) at the receivers. However, both the coarse quantization of LADCs and the inaccurate instantaneous channel state information (ICSI) degrade the performance of quantized mMIMO systems. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel stochastic hybrid analog-digital combiner (SHC) scheme for adapting the hybrid combiner to the long-term statistics of the channel state information (SCSI). We seek to minimize the transmit power by jointly optimizing the SHC subject to average rate constraints. For the sake of solving the resultant nonconvex stochastic optimization problem, we develop a relaxed stochastic successive convex approximation (RSSCA) algorithm. Simulations are carried out to confirm the benefits of our proposed scheme over the benchmarkers.

Joint User Scheduling and Resource Allocation for Millimeter Wave Systems Relying on Adaptive-Resolution ADCs

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems using adaptive-resolution analog-to-digital converters (RADCs) have recently drawn considerable interests from the research community as benefit of their high energy efficiency and low implementation cost. In this paper, we focus on the mmWave uplink using RADCs and investigate the joint user scheduling and resource allocation problem. Specifically, we seek to maximize the system throughput of the scheduled users by jointly optimizing their transmit power level and hybrid combiners as well as the number of quantization bits, subject to practical constraints. By relying on fractional programming (FP) techniques, we first covert this problem into a form amenable to optimization and exploit the specific structures in its solutions with the aid of the so-called Ky Fan n-norm. Then, the resultant optimization problem is solved using a penalty block successive concave approximation (P-BSCA) algorithm. Our numerical results reveal that the proposed algorithm substantially enhances the throughput of the scheduled users compared to the state-of-theart benchmark schemes and provides more flexible and efficient resource allocation control.

Joint Channel Assignment and Power Allocation for Multi-UAV Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm has emerged as a promising novel paradigm to achieve better coverage and higher capacity for future wireless network by exploiting the more favorable line-of-sight (LoS) propagation. To reap the potential gains of UAV swarm, the remote control signal sent by ground control unit (GCU) is essential, whereas the control signal quality are susceptible in practice due to the effect of the adjacent channel interference (ACI) and the external interference (EI) from radiation sources distributed across the region. To tackle these challenges, this paper considers priority-aware resource coordination in a multi-UAV communication system, where multiple UAVs are controlled by a GCU to perform certain tasks with a pre-defined trajectory. Specifically, we maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the UAVs by jointly optimizing channel assignment and power allocation strategy under stringent resource availability constraints. According to the intensity of ACI, we consider the corresponding problem in two scenarios, i.e., Null-ACI and ACI systems. By virtue of the particular problem structure in Null-ACI case, we first recast the formulation into an equivalent yet more tractable form and obtain the global optimal solution via Hungarian algorithm. For general ACI systems, we develop an efficient iterative algorithm for its solution based on the smooth approximation and alternating optimization methods. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can significantly enhance the minimum SINR among all the UAVs and adapt the allocation of communication resources to diverse mission priority.

Enhanced Channel Estimation in Massive MIMO via Coordinated Pilot Design

Pilot contamination is a limiting factor in multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems because it can severely impair channel estimation. Prior works have suggested coordinating pilot design across cells in order to reduce the channel estimation error caused by pilot contamination. In this paper, we propose a method for coordinated pilot design using fractional programming to minimize the weighted mean squared-error (MSE) in channel estimation. In particular, we apply the recently proposed quadratic transform to the MSE expression which allows the effect of pilot contamination to be decoupled. The resulting problem reformulation enables the pilots to be optimized in closed form if they can be designed arbitrarily. When the pilots are restricted to a given set of orthogonal sequences, pilot optimization reduces to an assignment problem which can be solved by weighted bipartite matching. Furthermore, we consider the max-min fairness of data rates with orthogonal pilots and obtain an extension of the proposed method to correlated Rayleigh fading. Finally, simulations demonstrate the advantage of the proposed (orthogonal and nonorthogonal) pilot designs as compared with state-of-the-art methods in combating pilot contamination.

Joint Beam Training and Data Transmission Design for Covert Millimeter-Wave Communication

Covert communication prevents legitimate transmission from being detected by a warden while maintaining certain covert rate at the intended user. Prior works have considered the design of covert communication over conventional low-frequency bands, but few works so far have explored the higher-frequency millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum. The directional nature of mmWave communication makes it attractive for covert transmission. However, how to establish such directional link in a covert manner in the first place remains as a significant challenge. In this paper, we consider a covert mmWave communication system, where legitimate parties Alice and Bob adopt beam training approach for directional link establishment. Accounting for the training overhead, we develop a new design framework that jointly optimizes beam training duration, training power and data transmission power to maximize the effective throughput of Alice-Bob link while ensuring the covertness constraint at warden Willie is met. We further propose a dual-decomposition successive convex approximation algorithm to solve the problem efficiently. Numerical studies demonstrate interesting tradeoff among the key design parameters considered and also the necessity of joint design of beam training and data transmission for covert mmWave communication.

Stochastic Transceiver Optimization in Multi-Tags Symbiotic Radio Systems

Symbiotic radio (SR) is emerging as a spectrum- and energy-efficient communication paradigm for future passive Internet-of-things (IoT), where some single-antenna backscatter devices, referred to as Tags, are parasitic in an active primary transmission. The primary transceiver is designed to assist both direct-link (DL) and backscatter-link (BL) communication. In multi-tags SR systems, the transceiver designs become much more complicated due to the presence of DL and inter-Tag interference, which further poses new challenges to the availability and reliability of DL and BL transmission. To overcome these challenges, we formulate the stochastic optimization of transceiver design as the general network utility maximization problem (GUMP). The resultant problem is a stochastic multiple-ratio fractional non-convex problem, and consequently challenging to solve. By leveraging some fractional programming techniques, we tailor a surrogate function with the specific structure and subsequently develop a batch stochastic parallel decomposition (BSPD) algorithm, which is shown to converge to stationary solutions of the GNUMP. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by numerical examples in terms of the achieved system throughput.

Hybrid Beamforming for Massive MIMO Over-the-Air Computation

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) has been recognized as a promising technique in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks for fast data aggregation from a large number of wireless devices. However, as the number of devices becomes large, the computational accuracy of AirComp would seriously degrade due to the vanishing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To address this issue, we exploit the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with hybrid beamforming, in order to enhance the computational accuracy of AirComp in a cost-effective manner. In particular, we consider the scenario with a large number of multi-antenna devices simultaneously sending data to an access point (AP) equipped with massive antennas for functional computation over the air. Under this setup, we jointly optimize the transmit digital beamforming at the wireless devices and the receive hybrid beamforming at the AP, with the objective of minimizing the computational mean-squared error (MSE) subject to the individual transmit power constraints at the wireless devices. To solve the non-convex hybrid beamforming design optimization problem, we propose an alternating-optimization-based approach. In particular, we propose two computationally efficient algorithms to handle the challenging receive analog beamforming problem, by exploiting the techniques of successive convex approximation (SCA) and block coordinate descent (BCD), respectively. It is shown that for the special case with a fully-digital receiver at the AP, the achieved MSE of the massive MIMO AirComp system is inversely proportional to the number of receive antennas. Furthermore, numerical results show that the proposed hybrid beamforming design substantially enhances the computation MSE performance as compared to other benchmark schemes, while the SCA-based algorithm performs closely to the performance upper bound achieved by the fully-digital beamforming.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Millimeter Wave System with Resolution-Adaptive ADCs

This letter investigates the uplink of a multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array and resolution-adaptive analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). Although employing massive MIMO at the BS can significantly improve the spectral efficiency, it also leads to high hardware complexity and huge power consumption. To overcome these challenges, we seek to jointly optimize the beamspace hybrid combiner and the ADC quantization bits allocation to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) under some practical constraints. The formulated problem is non-convex due to the non-linear fractional objective function and the non-convex feasible set which is generally intractable. In order to handle these difficulties, we first apply some fractional programming (FP) techniques and introduce auxiliary variables to recast this problem into an equivalent form amenable to optimization. Then, we propose an efficient double-loop iterative algorithm based on the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) and the majorization-minimization (MM) methods to find local stationary solutions. Simulation results reveal significant gain over the baselines.

Power Control for Massive MIMO Systems with Nonorthogonal Pilots

This letter shows that optimizing the transmit powers along with optimally designed nonorthogonal pilots can significantly reduce pilot contamination and improve the overall throughput of the uplink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system as compared to the conventional schemes that use orthogonal pilots. Given the optimized nonorthogonal pilots, power control as a function of the large-scale path-loss can be thought of as a stochastic optimization problem due to the presence of fast fading. This paper advocates a deterministic approach to solve this problem, then further proposes a stochastic optimization method that utilizes successive convex approximation as a benchmark to quantify the performance of the proposed approach. Simulation results reveal significant advantage of using optimized nonorthogonal pilots together with power control to combat pilot contamination.

Efficient Resource Allocation for Relay-Assisted Computation Offloading in Mobile Edge Computing

In this article, we consider the problem of relay assisted computation offloading (RACO), in which user A aims to share the results of computational tasks with another user B through wireless exchange over a relay platform equipped with mobile edge computing capabilities, referred to as a mobile edge relay server (MERS). To support the computation offloading, we propose a hybrid relaying (HR) approach employing two orthogonal frequency bands, where the amplify-and-forward scheme is used in one band to exchange computational results, while the decode-and-forward scheme is used in the other band to transfer the unprocessed tasks. The motivation behind the proposed HR scheme for RACO is to adapt the allocation of computing and communication resources both to dynamic user requirements and to diverse computational tasks. Within this framework, we seek to minimize the weighted sum of the execution delay and the energy consumption in the RACO system by jointly optimizing the computation offloading ratio, the bandwidth allocation, the processor speeds, as well as the transmit power levels of both user $A$ and the MERS, under practical constraints on the available computing and communication resources. The resultant problem is formulated as a non-differentiable and nonconvex optimization program with highly coupled constraints. By adopting a series of transformations and introducing auxiliary variables, we first convert this problem into a more tractable yet equivalent form. We then develop an efficient iterative algorithm for its solution based on the concave-convex procedure. By exploiting the special structure of this problem, we also propose a simplified algorithm based on the inexact block coordinate descent method, with reduced computational complexity. Finally, we present numerical results that illustrate the advantages of the proposed algorithms over state-of-the-art benchmark schemes.

Mixed-Timescale Beamforming and Power Splitting for Massive MIMO Aided SWIPT IoT Network

Traditional simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) with power splitting assumes perfect channel state information (CSI), which is difficult to obtain especially in the massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) regime. In this letter, we consider a mixed-timescale joint beamforming and power splitting (MJBP) scheme to maximize general utility functions under a power constraint in the downlink of a massive MIMO SWIPT IoT network. In this scheme, the transmit digital beamformer is adapted to the imperfect CSI, while the receive power splitters are adapted to the long-term channel statistics only due to the consideration of hardware limit and signaling overhead. The formulated optimization problem is solved using a mixed-timescale online stochastic successive convex approximation (MO-SSCA) algorithm. Simulation results reveal significant gain over the baselines.

Two-Timescale Hybrid Compression and Forward for Massive MIMO Aided C-RAN

We consider the uplink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN), where massive MIMO remote radio heads (RRHs) serve as relays between users and a centralized baseband unit (BBU). Although employing massive MIMO at RRHs can improve the spectral efficiency, it also significantly increases the amount of data transported over the fronthaul links between RRHs and BBU, which becomes a performance bottleneck. Existing fronthaul compression methods for conventional C-RAN are not suitable for the massive MIMO regime because they require fully-digital processing and/or real-time full channel state information (CSI), incurring high implementation cost for massive MIMO RRHs. To overcome this challenge, we propose to perform a two-timescale hybrid analog-and-digital spatial filtering at each RRH to reduce the fronthaul consumption. Specifically, the analog filter is adaptive to the channel statistics to achieve massive MIMO array gain, and the digital filter is adaptive to the instantaneous effective CSI to achieve spatial multiplexing gain. Such a design can alleviate the performance bottleneck of limited fronthaul with reduced hardware cost and power consumption, and is more robust to the CSI delay. We propose an online algorithm for the two-timescale non-convex optimization of analog and digital filters, and establish its convergence to stationary solutions. Finally, simulations verify the advantages of the proposed scheme.

Joint Cooperative Computation and Interactive Communication for Relay-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing

To realize cooperative computation and communication in a relay mobile edge computing system, we develop a hybrid relay forward protocol, where we seek to balance the execution delay and network energy consumption. The problem is formulated as a nondifferentible optimization problem which is nonconvex with highly coupled constraints. By exploiting the problem structure, we propose a lightweight algorithm based on inexact block coordinate descent method. Our results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits much faster convergence as compared with the popular concave-convex procedure based algorithm, while achieving good performance.
