Parameter-free Structural Diversity Search

The problem of structural diversity search is to find the top-k vertices with the largest structural diversity in a graph. However, when identifying distinct social contexts, existing structural diversity models (e.g., t-sized component, t-core, and t-brace) are sensitive to an input parameter of t. To address this drawback, we propose a parameter-free structural diversity model. Specifically, we propose a novel notation of discriminative core, which automatically models various kinds of social contexts without parameter t. Leveraging on discriminative cores and h-index, the structural diversity score for a vertex is calculated. We study the problem of parameter-free structural diversity search in this paper. An efficient top-k search algorithm with a well-designed upper bound for pruning is proposed. Extensive experiment results demonstrate the parameter sensitivity of existing t-core based model and verify the superiority of our methods.

Ultrahigh Responsivity Photodetectors of Two-dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks Integrated on Graphene

Two dimensional (2D) materials exhibit superior properties in electronic and optoelectronic fields. The wide demand for high performance optoelectronic devices promotes the exploration of diversified 2D materials. Recently, 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as next-generation layered materials with predesigned pi electronic skeletons and highly ordered topological structures, which are promising for tailoring their optoelectronic properties. However, COFs are usually produced as solid powders due to anisotropic growth, making them unreliable to integrate into devices. Here, by selecting tetraphenylethylene (TPE) monomers with photoelectric activity, we designed and synthesized photosensitive 2D COFs with highly ordered topologies and grew 2D COFs in situ on graphene to form well ordered COF graphene heterostructures. Ultrasensitive photodetectors were successfully fabricated with the COFETBC TAPT graphene heterostructure and exhibited an excellent overall performance. Moreover, due to the high surface area and the polarity selectivity of COFs, the photosensing properties of the photodetectors can be reversibly regulated by specific target molecules. Our research provides new strategies for building advanced functional devices with programmable material structures and diversified regulation methods, paving the way for a generation of high performance applications in optoelectronics and many other fields.

Hyperbolic Interaction Model For Hierarchical Multi-Label Classification

Different from the traditional classification tasks which assume mutual exclusion of labels, hierarchical multi-label classification (HMLC) aims to assign multiple labels to every instance with the labels organized under hierarchical relations. Besides the labels, since linguistic ontologies are intrinsic hierarchies, the conceptual relations between words can also form hierarchical structures. Thus it can be a challenge to learn mappings from word hierarchies to label hierarchies. We propose to model the word and label hierarchies by embedding them jointly in the hyperbolic space. The main reason is that the tree-likeness of the hyperbolic space matches the complexity of symbolic data with hierarchical structures. A new Hyperbolic Interaction Model (HyperIM) is designed to learn the label-aware document representations and make predictions for HMLC. Extensive experiments are conducted on three benchmark datasets. The results have demonstrated that the new model can realistically capture the complex data structures and further improve the performance for HMLC comparing with the state-of-the-art methods. To facilitate future research, our code is publicly available.

Fast Algorithms for Intimate-Core Group Search in Weighted Graphs

Community search that finds query-dependent communities has been studied on various kinds of graphs. As one instance of community search, intimate-core group search over a weighted graph is to find a connected $k$-core containing all query nodes with the smallest group weight. However, existing state-of-the-art methods start from the maximal $k$-core to refine an answer, which is practically inefficient for large networks. In this paper, we develop an efficient framework, called local exploration k-core search (LEKS), to find intimate-core groups in graphs. We propose a small-weighted spanning tree to connect query nodes, and then expand the tree level by level to a connected $k$-core, which is finally refined as an intimate-core group. We also design a protection mechanism for critical nodes to avoid the collapsed $k$-core. Extensive experiments on real-life networks validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our methods.

A Survey of Community Search Over Big Graphs

With the rapid development of information technologies, various big graphs are prevalent in many real applications (e.g., social media and knowledge bases). An important component of these graphs is the network community. Essentially, a community is a group of vertices which are densely connected internally. Community retrieval can be used in many real applications, such as event organization, friend recommendation, and so on. Consequently, how to efficiently find high-quality communities from big graphs is an important research topic in the era of big data. Recently a large group of research works, called community search, have been proposed. They aim to provide efficient solutions for searching high-quality communities from large networks in real-time. Nevertheless, these works focus on different types of graphs and formulate communities in different manners, and thus it is desirable to have a comprehensive review of these works. In this survey, we conduct a thorough review of existing community search works. Moreover, we analyze and compare the quality of communities under their models, and the performance of different solutions. Furthermore, we point out new research directions. This survey does not only help researchers to have a better understanding of existing community search solutions, but also provides practitioners a better judgment on choosing the proper solutions.

The Constrained Round Robin Algorithm for Fair and Efficient Allocation

We consider a multi-agent resource allocation setting that models the assignment of papers to reviewers. A recurring issue in allocation problems is the compatibility of welfare/efficiency and fairness. Given an oracle to find a welfare-achieving allocation, we embed such an oracle into a flexible algorithm called the Constrained Round Robin (CRR) algorithm, that achieves the required welfare level. Our algorithm also allows the system designer to lower the welfare requirements in order to achieve a higher degree of fairness. If the welfare requirement is lowered enough, a strengthening of envy-freeness up to one item is guaranteed. Hence, our algorithm can be viewed as a computationally efficient way to interpolate between welfare and approximate envy-freeness in allocation problems.

Label-aware Document Representation via Hybrid Attention for Extreme Multi-Label Text Classification

Extreme multi-label text classification (XMTC) aims at tagging a document with most relevant labels from an extremely large-scale label set. It is a challenging problem especially for the tail labels because there are only few training documents to build classifier. This paper is motivated to better explore the semantic relationship between each document and extreme labels by taking advantage of both document content and label correlation. Our objective is to establish an explicit label-aware representation for each document with a hybrid attention deep neural network model(LAHA). LAHA consists of three parts. The first part adopts a multi-label self-attention mechanism to detect the contribution of each word to labels. The second part exploits the label structure and document content to determine the semantic connection between words and labels in a same latent space. An adaptive fusion strategy is designed in the third part to obtain the final label-aware document representation so that the essence of previous two parts can be sufficiently integrated. Extensive experiments have been conducted on six benchmark datasets by comparing with the state-of-the-art methods. The results show the superiority of our proposed LAHA method, especially on the tail labels.

Revised Progressive-Hedging-Algorithm Based Two-layer Solution Scheme for Bayesian Reinforcement Learning

Stochastic control with both inherent random system noise and lack of knowledge on system parameters constitutes the core and fundamental topic in reinforcement learning (RL), especially under non-episodic situations where online learning is much more demanding. This challenge has been notably addressed in Bayesian RL recently where some approximation techniques have been developed to find suboptimal policies. While existing approaches mainly focus on approximating the value function, or on involving Thompson sampling, we propose a novel two-layer solution scheme in this paper to approximate the optimal policy directly, by combining the time-decomposition based dynamic programming (DP) at the lower layer and the scenario-decomposition based revised progressive hedging algorithm (PHA) at the upper layer, for a type of Bayesian RL problem. The key feature of our approach is to separate reducible system uncertainty from irreducible one at two different layers, thus decomposing and conquering. We demonstrate our solution framework more especially via the linear-quadratic-Gaussian problem with unknown gain, which, although seemingly simple, has been a notorious subject over more than half century in dual control.

Fast Algorithm for K-Truss Discovery on Public-Private Graphs

In public-private graphs, users share one public graph and have their own private graphs. A private graph consists of personal private contacts that only can be visible to its owner, e.g., hidden friend lists on Facebook and secret following on Sina Weibo. However, existing public-private analytic algorithms have not yet investigated the dense subgraph discovery of k-truss, where each edge is contained in at least k-2 triangles. This paper aims at finding k-truss efficiently in public-private graphs. The core of our solution is a novel algorithm to update k-truss with node insertions. We develop a classification-based hybrid strategy of node insertions and edge insertions to incrementally compute k-truss in public-private graphs. Extensive experiments validate the superiority of our proposed algorithms against state-of-the-art methods on real-world datasets.

Semi-Unsupervised Lifelong Learning for Sentiment Classification: Less Manual Data Annotation and More Self-Studying

Lifelong machine learning is a novel machine learning paradigm which can continually accumulate knowledge during learning. The knowledge extracting and reusing abilities enable the lifelong machine learning to solve the related problems. The traditional approaches like Naïve Bayes and some neural network based approaches only aim to achieve the best performance upon a single task. Unlike them, the lifelong machine learning in this paper focuses on how to accumulate knowledge during learning and leverage them for further tasks. Meanwhile, the demand for labelled data for training also is significantly decreased with the knowledge reusing. This paper suggests that the aim of the lifelong learning is to use less labelled data and computational cost to achieve the performance as well as or even better than the supervised learning.

Single-photon computational 3D imaging at 45 km

Long-range active imaging has a variety of applications in remote sensing and target recognition. Single-photon LiDAR (light detection and ranging) offers single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution, which is desirable for high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging over long distances. Despite important progress, further extending the imaging range presents enormous challenges because only weak echo photons return and are mixed with strong noise. Herein, we tackled these challenges by constructing a high-efficiency, low-noise confocal single-photon LiDAR system, and developing a long-range-tailored computational algorithm that provides high photon efficiency and super-resolution in the transverse domain. Using this technique, we experimentally demonstrated active single-photon 3D-imaging at a distance of up to 45 km in an urban environment, with a low return-signal level of $\sim$1 photon per pixel. Our system is feasible for imaging at a few hundreds of kilometers by refining the setup, and thus represents a significant milestone towards rapid, low-power, and high-resolution LiDAR over extra-long ranges.

Simultaneous Spectral-Spatial Feature Selection and Extraction for Hyperspectral Images

In hyperspectral remote sensing data mining, it is important to take into account of both spectral and spatial information, such as the spectral signature, texture feature and morphological property, to improve the performances, e.g., the image classification accuracy. In a feature representation point of view, a nature approach to handle this situation is to concatenate the spectral and spatial features into a single but high dimensional vector and then apply a certain dimension reduction technique directly on that concatenated vector before feed it into the subsequent classifier. However, multiple features from various domains definitely have different physical meanings and statistical properties, and thus such concatenation hasn't efficiently explore the complementary properties among different features, which should benefit for boost the feature discriminability. Furthermore, it is also difficult to interpret the transformed results of the concatenated vector. Consequently, finding a physically meaningful consensus low dimensional feature representation of original multiple features is still a challenging task. In order to address the these issues, we propose a novel feature learning framework, i.e., the simultaneous spectral-spatial feature selection and extraction algorithm, for hyperspectral images spectral-spatial feature representation and classification. Specifically, the proposed method learns a latent low dimensional subspace by projecting the spectral-spatial feature into a common feature space, where the complementary information has been effectively exploited, and simultaneously, only the most significant original features have been transformed. Encouraging experimental results on three public available hyperspectral remote sensing datasets confirm that our proposed method is effective and efficient.

CRAD: Clustering with Robust Autocuts and Depth

We develop a new density-based clustering algorithm named CRAD which is based on a new neighbor searching function with a robust data depth as the dissimilarity measure. Our experiments prove that the new CRAD is highly competitive at detecting clusters with varying densities, compared with the existing algorithms such as DBSCAN, OPTICS and DBCA. Furthermore, a new effective parameter selection procedure is developed to select the optimal underlying parameter in the real-world clustering, when the ground truth is unknown. Lastly, we suggest a new clustering framework that extends CRAD from spatial data clustering to time series clustering without a-priori knowledge of the true number of clusters. The performance of CRAD is evaluated through extensive experimental studies.

Online Risk-Bounded Motion Planning for Autonomous Vehicles in Dynamic Environments

A crucial challenge to efficient and robust motion planning for autonomous vehicles is understanding the intentions of the surrounding agents. Ignoring the intentions of the other agents in dynamic environments can lead to risky or over-conservative plans. In this work, we model the motion planning problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) and propose an online system that combines an intent recognition algorithm and a POMDP solver to generate risk-bounded plans for the ego vehicle navigating with a number of dynamic agent vehicles. The intent recognition algorithm predicts the probabilistic hybrid motion states of each agent vehicle over a finite horizon using Bayesian filtering and a library of pre-learned maneuver motion models. We update the POMDP model with the intent recognition results in real time and solve it using a heuristic search algorithm which produces policies with upper-bound guarantees on the probability of near colliding with other dynamic agents. We demonstrate that our system is able to generate better motion plans in terms of efficiency and safety in a number of challenging environments including unprotected intersection left turns and lane changes as compared to the baseline methods.

A model-independent approach to the reconstruction of multi-flavor supernova neutrino energy spectra

The model-independent reconstruction of the energy spectra of $\overlineν^{}_e$, $ν^{}_e$ and $ν^{}_x$ (i.e., $ν^{}_μ$, $ν^{}_τ$ and their antiparticles) from the future observation of a galactic core-collapse supernova (SN) is of crucial importance to understand the microscopic physics of SN explosions. To this end, we propose a practically useful method to combine the multi-channel detection of SN neutrinos in a large liquid-scintillator detector (e.g., JUNO), namely, the inverse beta decay $\overlineν^{}_e + p \to e^+ + n$, the elastic neutrino-proton scattering $ν+ p \to ν+ p$ and the elastic neutrino-electron scattering $ν+ e^- \to ν+ e^-$, and reconstruct the energy spectra of $\overlineν^{}_e$, $ν^{}_e$ and $ν^{}_x$ by making the best use of the observational data in those three channels. In addition, the neutrino energy spectra from the numerical simulations of the delayed neutrino-driven SN explosions are implemented to demonstrate the robustness of our method. Taking the ordinary matter effects into account, we also show how to extract the initial neutrino energy spectra in the presence of neutrino flavor conversions.

Uncertainty-Aware Driver Trajectory Prediction at Urban Intersections

Predicting the motion of a driver's vehicle is crucial for advanced driving systems, enabling detection of potential risks towards shared control between the driver and automation systems. In this paper, we propose a variational neural network approach that predicts future driver trajectory distributions for the vehicle based on multiple sensors. Our predictor generates both a conditional variational distribution of future trajectories, as well as a confidence estimate for different time horizons. Our approach allows us to handle inherently uncertain situations, and reason about information gain from each input, as well as combine our model with additional predictors, creating a mixture of experts. We show how to augment the variational predictor with a physics-based predictor, and based on their confidence estimations, improve overall system performance. The resulting combined model is aware of the uncertainty associated with its predictions, which can help the vehicle autonomy to make decisions with more confidence. The model is validated on real-world urban driving data collected in multiple locations. This validation demonstrates that our approach improves the prediction error of a physics-based model by 25% while successfully identifying the uncertain cases with 82% accuracy.

Envy-freeness up to any item with high Nash welfare: The virtue of donating items

Several fairness concepts have been proposed recently in attempts to approximate envy-freeness in settings with indivisible goods. Among them, the concept of envy-freeness up to any item (EFX) is arguably the closest to envy-freeness. Unfortunately, EFX allocations are not known to exist except in a few special cases. We make significant progress in this direction. We show that for every instance with additive valuations, there is an EFX allocation of a subset of items with a Nash welfare that is at least half of the maximum possible Nash welfare for the original set of items. That is, after donating some items to a charity, one can distribute the remaining items in a fair way with high efficiency. This bound is proved to be best possible. Our proof is constructive and highlights the importance of maximum Nash welfare allocation. Starting with such an allocation, our algorithm decides which items to donate and redistributes the initial bundles to the agents, eventually obtaining an allocation with the claimed efficiency guarantee. The application of our algorithm to large markets, where the valuations of an agent for every item is relatively small, yields EFX with almost optimal Nash welfare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first use of large market assumptions in the fair division literature. We also show that our algorithm can be modified to compute, in polynomial-time, EFX allocations that approximate optimal Nash welfare within a factor of at most $2ρ$, using a $ρ$-approximate allocation on input instead of the maximum Nash welfare one.

Improve Blockchain Performance using Graph Data Structure and Parallel Mining

Blockchain technology is ushering in another break-out year, the challenge of blockchain still remains to be solved. This paper analyzes the features of Bitcoin and Bitcoin-NG system based on blockchain, proposes an improved method of implementing blockchain systems by replacing the structure of the original chain with the graph data structure. It was named GraphChain. Each block represents a transaction and contains the balance status of the traders. Additionally, as everyone knows all the transactions in Bitcoin system will be baled by only one miner that will result in a lot of wasted effort, so another way to improve resource utilization is to change the original way to compete for miner to election and parallel mining. Researchers simulated blockchain with graph structure and parallel mining through python, and suggested the conceptual new graph model which can improve both capacity and performance.
