Probabilistically Masked Language Model Capable of Autoregressive Generation in Arbitrary Word Order

Masked language model and autoregressive language model are two types of language models. While pretrained masked language models such as BERT overwhelm the line of natural language understanding (NLU) tasks, autoregressive language models such as GPT are especially capable in natural language generation (NLG). In this paper, we propose a probabilistic masking scheme for the masked language model, which we call probabilistically masked language model (PMLM). We implement a specific PMLM with a uniform prior distribution on the masking ratio named u-PMLM. We prove that u-PMLM is equivalent to an autoregressive permutated language model. One main advantage of the model is that it supports text generation in arbitrary order with surprisingly good quality, which could potentially enable new applications over traditional unidirectional generation. Besides, the pretrained u-PMLM also outperforms BERT on a set of downstream NLU tasks.

Progressive Memory Banks for Incremental Domain Adaptation

This paper addresses the problem of incremental domain adaptation (IDA) in natural language processing (NLP). We assume each domain comes one after another, and that we could only access data in the current domain. The goal of IDA is to build a unified model performing well on all the domains that we have encountered. We adopt the recurrent neural network (RNN) widely used in NLP, but augment it with a directly parameterized memory bank, which is retrieved by an attention mechanism at each step of RNN transition. The memory bank provides a natural way of IDA: when adapting our model to a new domain, we progressively add new slots to the memory bank, which increases the number of parameters, and thus the model capacity. We learn the new memory slots and fine-tune existing parameters by back-propagation. Experimental results show that our approach achieves significantly better performance than fine-tuning alone. Compared with expanding hidden states, our approach is more robust for old domains, shown by both empirical and theoretical results. Our model also outperforms previous work of IDA including elastic weight consolidation and progressive neural networks in the experiments.

Dialog State Tracking with Reinforced Data Augmentation

Neural dialog state trackers are generally limited due to the lack of quantity and diversity of annotated training data. In this paper, we address this difficulty by proposing a reinforcement learning (RL) based framework for data augmentation that can generate high-quality data to improve the neural state tracker. Specifically, we introduce a novel contextual bandit generator to learn fine-grained augmentation policies that can generate new effective instances by choosing suitable replacements for the specific context. Moreover, by alternately learning between the generator and the state tracker, we can keep refining the generative policies to generate more high-quality training data for neural state tracker. Experimental results on the WoZ and MultiWoZ (restaurant) datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly improves the performance over the state-of-the-art models, especially with limited training data.

HMTNet:3D Hand Pose Estimation from Single Depth Image Based on Hand Morphological Topology

Thanks to the rapid development of CNNs and depth sensors, great progress has been made in 3D hand pose estimation. Nevertheless, it is still far from being solved for its cluttered circumstance and severe self-occlusion of hand. In this paper, we propose a method that takes advantage of human hand morphological topology (HMT) structure to improve the pose estimation performance. The main contributions of our work can be listed as below. Firstly, in order to extract more powerful features, we concatenate original and last layer of initial feature extraction module to preserve hand information better. Next, regression module inspired from hand morphological topology is proposed. In this submodule, we design a tree-like network structure according to hand joints distribution to make use of high order dependency of hand joints. Lastly, we conducted sufficient ablation experiments to verify our proposed method on each dataset. Experimental results on three popular hand pose dataset show superior performance of our method compared with the state-of-the-art methods. On ICVL and NYU dataset, our method outperforms great improvement over 2D state-of-the-art methods. On MSRA dataset, our method achieves comparable accuracy with the state-of-the-art methods. To summarize, our method is the most efficient method which can run at 220:7 fps on a single GPU compared with approximate accurate methods at present. The code will be available at.

Zero-Shot Paraphrase Generation with Multilingual Language Models

Leveraging multilingual parallel texts to automatically generate paraphrases has drawn much attention as size of high-quality paraphrase corpus is limited. Round-trip translation, also known as the pivoting method, is a typical approach to this end. However, we notice that the pivoting process involves multiple machine translation models and is likely to incur semantic drift during the two-step translations. In this paper, inspired by the Transformer-based language models, we propose a simple and unified paraphrasing model, which is purely trained on multilingual parallel data and can conduct zero-shot paraphrase generation in one step. Compared with the pivoting approach, paraphrases generated by our model is more semantically similar to the input sentence. Moreover, since our model shares the same architecture as GPT (Radford et al., 2018), we are able to pre-train the model on large-scale unparallel corpus, which further improves the fluency of the output sentences. In addition, we introduce the mechanism of denoising auto-encoder (DAE) to improve diversity and robustness of the model. Experimental results show that our model surpasses the pivoting method in terms of relevance, diversity, fluency and efficiency.

Pretrained Language Models for Document-Level Neural Machine Translation

Previous work on document-level NMT usually focuses on limited contexts because of degraded performance on larger contexts. In this paper, we investigate on using large contexts with three main contributions: (1) Different from previous work which pertrained models on large-scale sentence-level parallel corpora, we use pretrained language models, specifically BERT, which are trained on monolingual documents; (2) We propose context manipulation methods to control the influence of large contexts, which lead to comparable results on systems using small and large contexts; (3) We introduce a multi-task training for regularization to avoid models overfitting our training corpora, which further improves our systems together with a deeper encoder. Experiments are conducted on the widely used IWSLT data sets with three language pairs, i.e., Chinese--English, French--English and Spanish--English. Results show that our systems are significantly better than three previously reported document-level systems.

Towards third-order parametric down-conversion in optical fibers

Optical fibers have been considered an optimal platform for third-order parametric down-conversion since they can potentially overcome the weak third-order nonlinearity by their long interaction length. Here we present, in the first part, a theoretical derivation for the conversion rate both in the case of spontaneous generation and in the presence of a seed beam. Then we review three types of optical fibers and we examine their properties in terms of conversion efficiency and practical feasibility.

Pose Estimation for Texture-less Shiny Objects in a Single RGB Image Using Synthetic Training Data

In the industrial domain, the pose estimation of multiple texture-less shiny parts is a valuable but challenging task. In this particular scenario, it is impractical to utilize keypoints or other texture information because most of them are not actual features of the target but the reflections of surroundings. Moreover, the similarity of color also poses a challenge in segmentation. In this article, we propose to divide the pose estimation process into three stages: object detection, features detection and pose optimization. A convolutional neural network was utilized to perform object detection. Concerning the reliability of surface texture, we leveraged the contour information for estimating pose. Since conventional contour-based methods are inapplicable to clustered metal parts due to the difficulties in segmentation, we use the dense discrete points along the metal part edges as semantic keypoints for contour detection. Afterward, we exploit both keypoint information and CAD model to calculate the 6D pose of each object in view. A typical implementation of deep learning methods not only requires a large amount of training data, but also relies on intensive human labor for labeling the datasets. Therefore, we propose an approach to generate datasets and label them automatically. Despite not using any real-world photos for training, a series of experiments showed that the algorithm built on synthetic data perform well in the real environment.

Object grasping planning for the situation when soft and rigid objects are mixed together

In this paper, we propose a object detection method expressed as rotated bounding box to solve grasping challenge in the scenes where rigid objects and soft objects are mixed together. Compared with traditional detection methods, this method can output the angle information of rotated objects and thus can guarantee that within each rotated bounding box, there is a single instance. This technology is especially useful in the case of pile of objects with different orientations. In our method, when uncategorized objects with specific geometry shapes (rectangle or cylinder) are detected, the program will conclude that some rigid objects are covered by the towels. If no covered objects are detected, the grasp planning is based on 3D point cloud obtained from the mapping between 2D object detection result and its corresponding 3D point cloud. Based on the information provided by the 3D bounding box covering the object, grasping strategy for multiple cluttered rigid objects, collision avoidance strategy are proposed. The proposed method is verified by the experiment in which rigid objects and towels are mixed together.

Assembly of randomly placed parts realized by using only one robot arm with a general parallel-jaw gripper

In industry assembly lines, parts feeding machines are widely employed as the prologue of the whole procedure. They play the role of sorting the parts randomly placed in bins to the state with specified pose. With the help of the parts feeding machines, the subsequent assembly processes by robot arm can always start from the same condition. Thus it is expected that function of parting feeding machine and the robotic assembly can be integrated with one robot arm. This scheme can provide great flexibility and can also contribute to reduce the cost. The difficulties involved in this scheme lie in the fact that in the part feeding phase, the pose of the part after grasping may be not proper for the subsequent assembly. Sometimes it can not even guarantee a stable grasp. In this paper, we proposed a method to integrate parts feeding and assembly within one robot arm. This proposal utilizes a specially designed gripper tip mounted on the jaws of a two-fingered gripper. With the modified gripper, in-hand manipulation of the grasped object is realized, which can ensure the control of the orientation and offset position of the grasped object. The proposal in this paper is verified by a simulated assembly in which a robot arm completed the assembly process including parts picking from bin and a subsequent peg-in-hole assembly.

Efficient Fully Convolution Neural Network for Generating Pixel Wise Robotic Grasps With High Resolution Images

This paper presents an efficient neural network model to generate robotic grasps with high resolution images. The proposed model uses fully convolution neural network to generate robotic grasps for each pixel using 400 $\times$ 400 high resolution RGB-D images. It first down-sample the images to get features and then up-sample those features to the original size of the input as well as combines local and global features from different feature maps. Compared to other regression or classification methods for detecting robotic grasps, our method looks more like the segmentation methods which solves the problem through pixel-wise ways. We use Cornell Grasp Dataset to train and evaluate the model and get high accuracy about 94.42% for image-wise and 91.02% for object-wise and fast prediction time about 8ms. We also demonstrate that without training on the multiple objects dataset, our model can directly output robotic grasps candidates for different objects because of the pixel wise implementation.

GPT-based Generation for Classical Chinese Poetry

We present a simple yet effective method for generating high quality classical Chinese poetry with Generative Pre-trained Language Model (GPT). The method adopts a simple GPT model, without using any human crafted rules or features, or designing any additional neural components. While the proposed model learns to generate various forms of classical Chinese poems, including Jueju, Lüshi, various Cipai and Couples, the generated poems are of very high quality. We also propose and implement a method to fine-tune the model to generate acrostic poetry. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first to employ GPT in developing a poetry generation system. We have released an online mini demonstration program on Wechat to show the generation capability of the proposed method for classical Chinese poetry.

Decomposable Neural Paraphrase Generation

Paraphrasing exists at different granularity levels, such as lexical level, phrasal level and sentential level. This paper presents Decomposable Neural Paraphrase Generator (DNPG), a Transformer-based model that can learn and generate paraphrases of a sentence at different levels of granularity in a disentangled way. Specifically, the model is composed of multiple encoders and decoders with different structures, each of which corresponds to a specific granularity. The empirical study shows that the decomposition mechanism of DNPG makes paraphrase generation more interpretable and controllable. Based on DNPG, we further develop an unsupervised domain adaptation method for paraphrase generation. Experimental results show that the proposed model achieves competitive in-domain performance compared to the state-of-the-art neural models, and significantly better performance when adapting to a new domain.

Txilm: Lossy Block Compression with Salted Short Hashing

Current blockchains are restricted by the low throughput. Aimed at this problem, we propose Txilm, a protocol that compresses the size of transaction presentation in each block to save the bandwidth of the network. In this protocol, a block carries short hashes of TXIDs instead of complete transactions. Combined with the sorted transactions based on TXIDs, Txilm realizes 80 times of data size reduction compared with the original blockchains. We also evaluate the probability of hash collisions, and provide methods of resolving such collisions. Finally, we design strategies to protect against potential attacks on Txilm.

ERNIE: Enhanced Language Representation with Informative Entities

Neural language representation models such as BERT pre-trained on large-scale corpora can well capture rich semantic patterns from plain text, and be fine-tuned to consistently improve the performance of various NLP tasks. However, the existing pre-trained language models rarely consider incorporating knowledge graphs (KGs), which can provide rich structured knowledge facts for better language understanding. We argue that informative entities in KGs can enhance language representation with external knowledge. In this paper, we utilize both large-scale textual corpora and KGs to train an enhanced language representation model (ERNIE), which can take full advantage of lexical, syntactic, and knowledge information simultaneously. The experimental results have demonstrated that ERNIE achieves significant improvements on various knowledge-driven tasks, and meanwhile is comparable with the state-of-the-art model BERT on other common NLP tasks. The source code of this paper can be obtained from https://github.com/thunlp/ERNIE.

Triple-to-Text: Converting RDF Triples into High-Quality Natural Languages via Optimizing an Inverse KL Divergence

Knowledge base is one of the main forms to represent information in a structured way. A knowledge base typically consists of Resource Description Frameworks (RDF) triples which describe the entities and their relations. Generating natural language description of the knowledge base is an important task in NLP, which has been formulated as a conditional language generation task and tackled using the sequence-to-sequence framework. Current works mostly train the language models by maximum likelihood estimation, which tends to generate lousy sentences. In this paper, we argue that such a problem of maximum likelihood estimation is intrinsic, which is generally irrevocable via changing network structures. Accordingly, we propose a novel Triple-to-Text (T2T) framework, which approximately optimizes the inverse Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between the distributions of the real and generated sentences. Due to the nature that inverse KL imposes large penalty on fake-looking samples, the proposed method can significantly reduce the probability of generating low-quality sentences. Our experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate that T2T can generate higher-quality sentences and outperform baseline models in several evaluation metrics.

Vision Based Picking System for Automatic Express Package Dispatching

This paper presents a vision based robotic system to handle the picking problem involved in automatic express package dispatching. By utilizing two RealSense RGB-D cameras and one UR10 industrial robot, package dispatching task which is usually done by human can be completed automatically. In order to determine grasp point for overlapped deformable objects, we improved the sampling algorithm proposed by the group in Berkeley to directly generate grasp candidate from depth images. For the purpose of package recognition, the deep network framework YOLO is integrated. We also designed a multi-modal robot hand composed of a two-fingered gripper and a vacuum suction cup to deal with different kinds of packages. All the technologies have been integrated in a work cell which simulates the practical conditions of an express package dispatching scenario. The proposed system is verified by experiments conducted for two typical express items.

Estimating the Effective Elasticity Properties of a Diamond/$β$-SiC Composite Thin Film by 3D Reconstruction and Numerical Homogenization

The main aim of the present work is to estimate the effective elastic stiffnesses of a two-phase diamond/$β$-SiC composite thin film that is fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. The parameters of linear elasticity are determined by numerical homogenization. The database is sparse since for the 3D volume of interest only two micrographs displaying the phase distributions in perpendicular planes are available; micrographs each of a cross-section and the surface of the thin film. A representative volume element (RVE) is reconstructed by an optimization software and by means of identified material symmetries in 2D of the specimen. The elastic homogenization results indicate that the two-phase diamond/$β$-SiC composite exhibits the behavior of transverse isotropy, for which the set of six independent material parameters is identified.
