A Chandra X-ray Survey of Optically Selected Close Galaxy Pairs: Unexpectedly Low Occupation of Active Galactic Nuclei

High-resolution X-ray observations offer a unique tool for probing the still elusive connection between galaxy mergers and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We present an analysis of nuclear X-ray emission in an optically selected sample of 92 close galaxy pairs (with projected separations $\lesssim 20$ kpc and line-of-sight velocity offsets $<$ 500 km s$^{-1}$) at low redshift ($\bar{z} \sim 0.07$), based on archival Chandra observations. The parent sample of galaxy pairs is constructed without imposing an optical classification of nuclear activity, thus is largely free of selection effect for or against the presence of an AGN. Nor is this sample biased for or against gas-rich mergers. An X-ray source is detected in 70 of the 184 nuclei, giving a detection rate of $38\%^{+5\%}_{-5\%}$, down to a 0.5-8 keV limiting luminosity of $\lesssim 10^{40}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$. The detected and undetected nuclei show no systematic difference in their host galaxy properties such as galaxy morphology, stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion. When potential contamination from star formation is avoided (i.e., $L_{\rm 2-10~keV} > 10^{41}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$), the detection rate becomes $18\%^{+3\%}_{-3\%}$ (32/184), which shows no excess compared to the X-ray detection rate of a comparison sample of optically classified single AGNs. The fraction of pairs containing dual AGN is only $2\%^{+2\%}_{-2\%}$. Moreover, most nuclei at the smallest projected separations probed by our sample (a few kpc) have an unexpectedly low apparent X-ray luminosity and Eddington ratio, which cannot be solely explained by circumnuclear obscuration. These findings suggest that close galaxy interaction is not a sufficient condition for triggering a high level of AGN activity.

GLOBEM Dataset: Multi-Year Datasets for Longitudinal Human Behavior Modeling Generalization

Recent research has demonstrated the capability of behavior signals captured by smartphones and wearables for longitudinal behavior modeling. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive public dataset that serves as an open testbed for fair comparison among algorithms. Moreover, prior studies mainly evaluate algorithms using data from a single population within a short period, without measuring the cross-dataset generalizability of these algorithms. We present the first multi-year passive sensing datasets, containing over 700 user-years and 497 unique users' data collected from mobile and wearable sensors, together with a wide range of well-being metrics. Our datasets can support multiple cross-dataset evaluations of behavior modeling algorithms' generalizability across different users and years. As a starting point, we provide the benchmark results of 18 algorithms on the task of depression detection. Our results indicate that both prior depression detection algorithms and domain generalization techniques show potential but need further research to achieve adequate cross-dataset generalizability. We envision our multi-year datasets can support the ML community in developing generalizable longitudinal behavior modeling algorithms.

X-ray Spectral Estimation using Dictionary Learning

As computational tools for X-ray computed tomography (CT) become more quantitatively accurate, knowledge of the source-detector spectral response is critical for quantitative system-independent reconstruction and material characterization capabilities. Directly measuring the spectral response of a CT system is hard, which motivates spectral estimation using transmission data obtained from a collection of known homogeneous objects. However, the associated inverse problem is ill-conditioned, making accurate estimation of the spectrum challenging, particularly in the absence of a close initial guess. In this paper, we describe a dictionary-based spectral estimation method that yields accurate results without the need for any initial estimate of the spectral response. Our method utilizes a MAP estimation framework that combines a physics-based forward model along with an $L_0$ sparsity constraint and a simplex constraint on the dictionary coefficients. Our method uses a greedy support selection method and a new pair-wise iterated coordinate descent method to compute the above estimate. We demonstrate that our dictionary-based method outperforms a state-of-the-art method as shown in a cross-validation experiment on four real datasets collected at beamline 8.3.2 of the Advanced Light Source (ALS).

SimPer: Simple Self-Supervised Learning of Periodic Targets

From human physiology to environmental evolution, important processes in nature often exhibit meaningful and strong periodic or quasi-periodic changes. Due to their inherent label scarcity, learning useful representations for periodic tasks with limited or no supervision is of great benefit. Yet, existing self-supervised learning (SSL) methods overlook the intrinsic periodicity in data, and fail to learn representations that capture periodic or frequency attributes. In this paper, we present SimPer, a simple contrastive SSL regime for learning periodic information in data. To exploit the periodic inductive bias, SimPer introduces customized augmentations, feature similarity measures, and a generalized contrastive loss for learning efficient and robust periodic representations. Extensive experiments on common real-world tasks in human behavior analysis, environmental sensing, and healthcare domains verify the superior performance of SimPer compared to state-of-the-art SSL methods, highlighting its intriguing properties including better data efficiency, robustness to spurious correlations, and generalization to distribution shifts. Code and data are available at: https://github.com/YyzHarry/SimPer.

ByteTransformer: A High-Performance Transformer Boosted for Variable-Length Inputs

Transformers have become keystone models in natural language processing over the past decade. They have achieved great popularity in deep learning applications, but the increasing sizes of the parameter spaces required by transformer models generate a commensurate need to accelerate performance. Natural language processing problems are also routinely faced with variable-length sequences, as word counts commonly vary among sentences. Existing deep learning frameworks pad variable-length sequences to a maximal length, which adds significant memory and computational overhead. In this paper, we present ByteTransformer, a high-performance transformer boosted for variable-length inputs. We propose a padding-free algorithm that liberates the entire transformer from redundant computations on zero padded tokens. In addition to algorithmic-level optimization, we provide architecture-aware optimizations for transformer functional modules, especially the performance-critical algorithm Multi-Head Attention (MHA). Experimental results on an NVIDIA A100 GPU with variable-length sequence inputs validate that our fused MHA outperforms PyTorch by 6.13x. The end-to-end performance of ByteTransformer for a forward BERT transformer surpasses state-of-the-art transformer frameworks, such as PyTorch JIT, TensorFlow XLA, Tencent TurboTransformer, Microsoft DeepSpeed-Inference and NVIDIA FasterTransformer, by 87\%, 131\%, 138\%, 74\% and 55\%, respectively. We also demonstrate the general applicability of our optimization methods to other BERT-like models, including ALBERT, DistilBERT, and DeBERTa.

Reconstruction of Sequences Distorted by Two Insertions

Reconstruction codes are generalizations of error-correcting codes that can correct errors by a given number of noisy reads. The study of such codes was initiated by Levenshtein in 2001 and developed recently due to applications in modern storage devices such as racetrack memories and DNA storage. The central problem on this topic is to design codes with redundancy as small as possible for a given number $N$ of noisy reads. In this paper, the minimum redundancy of such codes for binary channels with exactly two insertions is determined asymptotically for all values of $N\ge 5$. Previously, such codes were studied only for channels with single edit errors or two-deletion errors.

Rethinking Vision Transformer and Masked Autoencoder in Multimodal Face Anti-Spoofing

Recently, vision transformer (ViT) based multimodal learning methods have been proposed to improve the robustness of face anti-spoofing (FAS) systems. However, there are still no works to explore the fundamental natures (\textit{e.g.}, modality-aware inputs, suitable multimodal pre-training, and efficient finetuning) in vanilla ViT for multimodal FAS. In this paper, we investigate three key factors (i.e., inputs, pre-training, and finetuning) in ViT for multimodal FAS with RGB, Infrared (IR), and Depth. First, in terms of the ViT inputs, we find that leveraging local feature descriptors benefits the ViT on IR modality but not RGB or Depth modalities. Second, in observation of the inefficiency on direct finetuning the whole or partial ViT, we design an adaptive multimodal adapter (AMA), which can efficiently aggregate local multimodal features while freezing majority of ViT parameters. Finally, in consideration of the task (FAS vs. generic object classification) and modality (multimodal vs. unimodal) gaps, ImageNet pre-trained models might be sub-optimal for the multimodal FAS task. To bridge these gaps, we propose the modality-asymmetric masked autoencoder (M$^{2}$A$^{2}$E) for multimodal FAS self-supervised pre-training without costly annotated labels. Compared with the previous modality-symmetric autoencoder, the proposed M$^{2}$A$^{2}$E is able to learn more intrinsic task-aware representation and compatible with modality-agnostic (e.g., unimodal, bimodal, and trimodal) downstream settings. Extensive experiments with both unimodal (RGB, Depth, IR) and multimodal (RGB+Depth, RGB+IR, Depth+IR, RGB+Depth+IR) settings conducted on multimodal FAS benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed methods. We hope these findings and solutions can facilitate the future research for ViT-based multimodal FAS.

Meissner effect induced Majorana zero modes at small magnetic field

One fundamental difficulty in realizing Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is the required high magnetic field, which causes serious issues, e.g., shrinks the superconducting gap, reduces topological region, and weakens their robustness against disorder. In this work, we propose that the Meissner effect can bring the topological superconducting phase to a superconductor/topological-insulator/superconductor (SC/TI/SC) hybrid system. Remarkably, the required magnetic field strength ($<$10 mT) to support MZMs has been reduced by several orders of magnitude compared to that ($>$0.5 T) in the previous schemes. Tuning the phase difference between the top and bottom superconductors can control the number and position of the MZMs. In addition, we account for the electrostatic potential in the superconductor/topological-insulator (SC/TI) interface through the self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson calculation, which shows the experimental accessibility of our proposal. Our proposal only needs a small magnetic eld of less than 10 mT and is robust against the chemical potential fluctuation, which makes SC/TI/SC hybrid an ideal Majorana platform.

Online Nonstochastic Control with Adversarial and Static Constraints

This paper studies online nonstochastic control problems with adversarial and static constraints. We propose online nonstochastic control algorithms that achieve both sublinear regret and sublinear adversarial constraint violation while keeping static constraint violation minimal against the optimal constrained linear control policy in hindsight. To establish the results, we introduce an online convex optimization with memory framework under adversarial and static constraints, which serves as a subroutine for the constrained online nonstochastic control algorithms. This subroutine also achieves the state-of-the-art regret and constraint violation bounds for constrained online convex optimization problems, which is of independent interest. Our experiments demonstrate the proposed control algorithms are adaptive to adversarial constraints and achieve smaller cumulative costs and violations. Moreover, our algorithms are less conservative and achieve significantly smaller cumulative costs than the state-of-the-art algorithm.

Suppression of the antiferromagnetic order by Zn doping in a possible Kitaev material Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Very recently, a 3$d$ based honeycomb cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has garnered tremendous attention due to the proposed proximity to the Kitaev spin-liquid state as its 4$d$/5$d$ counterparts. Here, we use Zn to substitute Co in a broad range and perform systematic studies on Na$_2$Co$_{2-x}$Zn$_x$TeO$_6$ by structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements, and track the doping evolution of its magnetic ground states. Due to the extremely close radii of Zn$^{2+}$ and high-spin Co$^{2+}$ ions, the substitution can be easily achieved. X-ray diffractions reveal no structural transition but only minor changes on the lattice parameter $c$ over a wide substitution range $0 \leq x \leq 1.5$. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements both suggest an antiferromagnetic ground state which is gradually suppressed with doping. It can survive with $x$ up to $\sim1.0$. Then it evolves into a spin-glass phase with short-range order that is rapidly supplanted by a magnetically disordered state when $x \geq 1.3$. By summarizing all these data, we construct a magnetic phase diagram of Na$_2$Co$_{2-x}$Zn$_x$TeO$_6$. Our results demonstrate that the Zn doping can effectively suppress the magnetic order and induce a possibe quantum paramagnetic state. These may serve as a platform to investigate the Kitaev physics in this system.

The SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper Reverberation Mapping Project: Unusual Broad-Line Variability in a Luminous Quasar

We present a high-cadence multi-epoch analysis of dramatic variability of three broad emission lines (MgII, H$β$, and H$α$) in the spectra of the luminous quasar ($λL_λ$(5100Å) = $4.7 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) SDSS J141041.25+531849.0 at $z = 0.359$ with 127 spectroscopic epochs over 9 years of monitoring (2013-2022). We observe anti-correlations between the broad emission-line widths and flux in all three emission lines, indicating that all three broad emission lines "breathe" in response to stochastic continuum variations. We also observe dramatic radial velocity shifts in all three broad emission lines, ranging from $Δ{v}$ $\sim$400 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$800 km s$^{-1}$, that vary over the course of the monitoring period. Our preferred explanation for the broad-line variability is complex kinematics in the broad-line region gas. We suggest a model for the broad-line variability that includes a combination of gas inflow with a radial gradient, an azimuthal asymmetry (e.g., a hot spot), superimposed on the stochastic flux-driven changes to the optimal emission region ("line breathing"). Similar instances of line-profile variability due to complex gas kinematics around quasars are likely to represent an important source of false positives in radial velocity searches for binary black holes, which typically lack the kind of high-cadence data we analyze here. The long-duration, wide-field, and many-epoch spectroscopic monitoring of SDSS-V BHM-RM provides an excellent opportunity for identifying and characterizing broad emission-line variability, and the inferred nature of the inner gas environment, of luminous quasars.

A Constraint Dissolving Approach for Nonsmooth Optimization over the Stiefel Manifold

This paper focus on the minimization of a possibly nonsmooth objective function over the Stiefel manifold. The existing approaches either lack efficiency or can only tackle prox-friendly objective functions. We propose a constraint dissolving function named NCDF and show that it has the same first-order stationary points and local minimizers as the original problem in a neighborhood of the Stiefel manifold. Furthermore, we show that the Clarke subdifferential of NCDF is easy to achieve from the Clarke subdifferential of the objective function. Therefore, various existing approaches for unconstrained nonsmooth optimization can be directly applied to nonsmooth optimization problems over the Stiefel manifold. We propose a framework for developing subgradient-based methods and establish their convergence properties based on prior works. Furthermore, based on our proposed framework, we can develop efficient approaches for optimization over the Stiefel manifold. Preliminary numerical experiments further highlight that the proposed constraint dissolving approach yields efficient and direct implementations of various unconstrained approaches to nonsmooth optimization problems over the Stiefel manifold.

An Overview of Human Activity Recognition Using Wearable Sensors: Healthcare and Artificial Intelligence

With the rapid development of the internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, human activity recognition (HAR) has been applied in a variety of domains such as security and surveillance, human-robot interaction, and entertainment. Even though a number of surveys and review papers have been published, there is a lack of HAR overview papers focusing on healthcare applications that use wearable sensors. Therefore, we fill in the gap by presenting this overview paper. In particular, we present our projects to illustrate the system design of HAR applications for healthcare. Our projects include early mobility identification of human activities for intensive care unit (ICU) patients and gait analysis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients. We cover essential components of designing HAR systems including sensor factors (e.g., type, number, and placement location), AI model selection (e.g., classical machine learning models versus deep learning models), and feature engineering. In addition, we highlight the challenges of such healthcare-oriented HAR systems and propose several research opportunities for both the medical and the computer science community.

Phenomenological studies on neutral $B$-meson decays into $J/ψf_1$ and $η_c f_1$

The axial-vector mesons $f_1(1285)$ and $f_1(1420)$ are particularly viewed as the mixtures of flavor states $f_n$ and $f_s$ with mixing angle $φ$. In order to determine this angle, we study the $B_{d,s}^0\to J/ψf_1(1285,1420)$ and $B_{d,s}^0\to η_c f_1(1285,1420)$ decays in perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach, including the effects of vertex corrections, nonfactorizable diagrams and penguin operators. Not only the branching fractions, but also the direct $CP$ asymmetries and the polarization fractions are calculated. It is found that the branching fractions of these decays are large enough to be measured in the running LHCb and Belle-II experiments. Moreover, in comparison with the observed ${\cal B}(B_{d,s}^0 \to J/ψf_1(1285))$, $B_s^0 \to (J/ψ, η_c) f_1(1420)$ decays have large branching fractions, which could be measured promisingly through $f_1(1420) \to K_S^0 K^\pm π^\mp$ in experiments. We also propose several ratios that could be used to further constrain the absolute value of the mixing angle $φ$, but its sign cannot be determined yet in these decays. The direct CP asymmetries of these decays indicate the penguin pollution in the $B_d^0 \to (J/ψ, η_c) f_1$ decays cannot be neglected. We acknowledge that there are large theoretical uncertainties arising from the distribution amplitudes of axial-vector mesons and charmonium states, and more precise nonperturbative parameters are called. The comparisons between our results and future experimental data would help us to understand the nature of $f_1$ states and to test the PQCD approach.

Chiral Topological superconductivity in the OAI/SC/FMI heterostructure avoiding the subband problem

Implementing topological superconductivity (TSC) and Majorana states (MSs) is one of the most significant and challenging tasks in both fundamental physics and topological quantum computations. In this work, taking the obstructed atomic insulator (OAI) Nb3Br8, s-wave superconductor (SC) NbSe2 and ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) as example, we propose a new setup to realize the 2D chiral TSC and MSs in the OAI/SC/FMI heterostructure, which could avoid the subband problem effectively and has the advantage of huge Rashba spin-orbit coupling. As a result, the TSC phase can be stabilized in a wide region of chemical potential and Zeeman field, and four distinct TSC phases with superconducting Chern number N= -1, -2, -3, 3 can be achieved. Moreover, a 2D BdG Hamiltonian based on the triangular lattice of obstructed Wannier charge centers, combined with the s-wave superconductivity paring and Zeeman field, is constructed to understand the whole topological phase diagram analytically. These results expand the application of OAIs and pave a new way to realize the TSC and MSs with unique advantages.

An Improved Unconstrained Approach for Bilevel Optimization

In this paper, we focus on the nonconvex-strongly-convex bilevel optimization problem (BLO). In this BLO, the objective function of the upper-level problem is nonconvex and possibly nonsmooth, and the lower-level problem is smooth and strongly convex with respect to the underlying variable $y$. We show that the feasible region of BLO is a Riemannian manifold. Then we transform BLO to its corresponding unconstrained constraint dissolving problem (CDB), whose objective function is explicitly formulated from the objective functions in BLO. We prove that BLO is equivalent to the unconstrained optimization problem CDB. Therefore, various efficient unconstrained approaches, together with their theoretical results, can be directly applied to BLO through CDB. We propose a unified framework for developing subgradient-based methods for CDB. Remarkably, we show that several existing efficient algorithms can fit the unified framework and be interpreted as descent algorithms for CDB. These examples further demonstrate the great potential of our proposed approach.

Solving Optimization Problems over the Stiefel Manifold by Smooth Exact Penalty Function

In this paper, we present a novel penalty model called ExPen for optimization over the Stiefel manifold. Different from existing penalty functions for orthogonality constraints, ExPen adopts a smooth penalty function without using any first-order derivative of the objective function. We show that all the first-order stationary points of ExPen with a sufficiently large penalty parameter are either feasible, namely, are the first-order stationary points of the original optimization problem, or far from the Stiefel manifold. Besides, the original problem and ExPen share the same second-order stationary points. Remarkably, the exact gradient and Hessian of ExPen are easy to compute. As a consequence, abundant algorithm resources in unconstrained optimization can be applied straightforwardly to solve ExPen.

EfficientPhys: Enabling Simple, Fast and Accurate Camera-Based Vitals Measurement

Camera-based physiological measurement is a growing field with neural models providing state-the-art-performance. Prior research have explored various "end-to-end" models; however these methods still require several preprocessing steps. These additional operations are often non-trivial to implement making replication and deployment difficult and can even have a higher computational budget than the "core" network itself. In this paper, we propose two novel and efficient neural models for camera-based physiological measurement called EfficientPhys that remove the need for face detection, segmentation, normalization, color space transformation or any other preprocessing steps. Using an input of raw video frames, our models achieve strong performance on three public datasets. We show that this is the case whether using a transformer or convolutional backbone. We further evaluate the latency of the proposed networks and show that our most light weight network also achieves a 33% improvement in efficiency.
