Prompting Large Language Models for Counterfactual Generation: An Empirical Study

Large language models (LLMs) have made remarkable progress in a wide range of natural language understanding and generation tasks. However, their ability to generate counterfactuals has not been examined systematically. To bridge this gap, we present a comprehensive evaluation framework on various types of NLU tasks, which covers all key factors in determining LLMs' capability of generating counterfactuals. Based on this framework, we 1) investigate the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs as the counterfactual generator, and 2) disclose the factors that affect LLMs when generating counterfactuals, including both the intrinsic properties of LLMs and prompt designing. The results show that, though LLMs are promising in most cases, they face challenges in complex tasks like RE since they are bounded by task-specific performance, entity constraints, and inherent selection bias. We also find that alignment techniques, e.g., instruction-tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback, may potentially enhance the counterfactual generation ability of LLMs. On the contrary, simply increasing the parameter size does not yield the desired improvements. Besides, from the perspective of prompt designing, task guidelines unsurprisingly play an important role. However, the chain-of-thought approach does not always help due to inconsistency issues.

Movie Genre Classification by Language Augmentation and Shot Sampling

Video-based movie genre classification has garnered considerable attention due to its various applications in recommendation systems. Prior work has typically addressed this task by adapting models from traditional video classification tasks, such as action recognition or event detection. However, these models often neglect language elements (e.g., narrations or conversations) present in videos, which can implicitly convey high-level semantics of movie genres, like storylines or background context. Additionally, existing approaches are primarily designed to encode the entire content of the input video, leading to inefficiencies in predicting movie genres. Movie genre prediction may require only a few shots to accurately determine the genres, rendering a comprehensive understanding of the entire video unnecessary. To address these challenges, we propose a Movie genre Classification method based on Language augmentatIon and shot samPling (Movie-CLIP). Movie-CLIP mainly consists of two parts: a language augmentation module to recognize language elements from the input audio, and a shot sampling module to select representative shots from the entire video. We evaluate our method on MovieNet and Condensed Movies datasets, achieving approximate 6-9% improvement in mean Average Precision (mAP) over the baselines. We also generalize Movie-CLIP to the scene boundary detection task, achieving 1.1% improvement in Average Precision (AP) over the state-of-the-art. We release our implementation at github.com/Zhongping-Zhang/Movie-CLIP.

Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Schools: Unveiling Factors Influencing Teachers Engagement

Albeit existing evidence about the impact of AI-based adaptive learning platforms, their scaled adoption in schools is slow at best. In addition, AI tools adopted in schools may not always be the considered and studied products of the research community. Therefore, there have been increasing concerns about identifying factors influencing adoption, and studying the extent to which these factors can be used to predict teachers engagement with adaptive learning platforms. To address this, we developed a reliable instrument to measure more holistic factors influencing teachers adoption of adaptive learning platforms in schools. In addition, we present the results of its implementation with school teachers (n=792) sampled from a large country-level population and use this data to predict teachers real-world engagement with the adaptive learning platform in schools. Our results show that although teachers knowledge, confidence and product quality are all important factors, they are not necessarily the only, may not even be the most important factors influencing the teachers engagement with AI platforms in schools. Not generating any additional workload, in-creasing teacher ownership and trust, generating support mechanisms for help, and assuring that ethical issues are minimised, are also essential for the adoption of AI in schools and may predict teachers engagement with the platform better. We conclude the paper with a discussion on the value of factors identified to increase the real-world adoption and effectiveness of adaptive learning platforms by increasing the dimensions of variability in prediction models and decreasing the implementation variability in practice.

ImageSubject: A Large-scale Dataset for Subject Detection

Main subjects usually exist in the images or videos, as they are the objects that the photographer wants to highlight. Human viewers can easily identify them but algorithms often confuse them with other objects. Detecting the main subjects is an important technique to help machines understand the content of images and videos. We present a new dataset with the goal of training models to understand the layout of the objects and the context of the image then to find the main subjects among them. This is achieved in three aspects. By gathering images from movie shots created by directors with professional shooting skills, we collect the dataset with strong diversity, specifically, it contains 107\,700 images from 21\,540 movie shots. We labeled them with the bounding box labels for two classes: subject and non-subject foreground object. We present a detailed analysis of the dataset and compare the task with saliency detection and object detection. ImageSubject is the first dataset that tries to localize the subject in an image that the photographer wants to highlight. Moreover, we find the transformer-based detection model offers the best result among other popular model architectures. Finally, we discuss the potential applications and conclude with the importance of the dataset.

Fine-Grained Control of Artistic Styles in Image Generation

Recent advances in generative models and adversarial training have enabled artificially generating artworks in various artistic styles. It is highly desirable to gain more control over the generated style in practice. However, artistic styles are unlike object categories -- there are a continuous spectrum of styles distinguished by subtle differences. Few works have been explored to capture the continuous spectrum of styles and apply it to a style generation task. In this paper, we propose to achieve this by embedding original artwork examples into a continuous style space. The style vectors are fed to the generator and discriminator to achieve fine-grained control. Our method can be used with common generative adversarial networks (such as StyleGAN). Experiments show that our method not only precisely controls the fine-grained artistic style but also improves image quality over vanilla StyleGAN as measured by FID.

Infrared target tracking based on proximal robust principal component analysis method

Infrared target tracking plays an important role in both civil and military fields. The main challenges in designing a robust and high-precision tracker for infrared sequences include overlap, occlusion and appearance change. To this end, this paper proposes an infrared target tracker based on proximal robust principal component analysis method. Firstly, the observation matrix is decomposed into a sparse occlusion matrix and a low-rank target matrix, and the constraint optimization is carried out with an approaching proximal norm which is better than L1-norm. To solve this convex optimization problem, Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is employed to estimate the variables alternately. Finally, the framework of particle filter with model update strategy is exploited to locate the target. Through a series of experiments on real infrared target sequences, the effectiveness and robustness of our algorithm are proved.

Life-time and line-width of individual quantum dots interfaced with graphene

We report on the luminescence's life-time and line-width from an array of individual quantum dots; these were interfaced with graphene surface guides or dispersed on a metal film. Our results are consistent with screening by charge carriers. Fluorescence quenching is typically mentioned as a sign that chromophores are interfacing a conductive surface; we found that QD interfaced with conductive layers exhibited shorter life-time and line-broadening but not necessarily fluorescence quenching as the latter may be impacted by molecular concentration, reflectivity and conductor imperfections. We also comment on selective life-time measurements, which, we postulate depend on the specifics of the local density-of-states involved.

Graphene channels interfaced with an array of individual quantum dots

Surface graphene guides were interfaced with an array of individual semiconductor quantum dots, whose position was commensurate with the optical guide modes. The surface guide served as a channel for a Field Effect Transistor (FET) while the dots were placed within the capacitor formed between the graphene channel and the gate electrode. We report on negative differential photo-related conductance under light and a diminishing fluorescence effect as a function of bias. We suggest that the quenched fluorescence may be hindered, to some degree, by incorporating the QD in a resonator, which is tuned to the emission wavelength.
