$\infty$-Categorical Perverse $p$-adic Differential Equations over Stacks

We will discuss $\infty$-categorical perverse $p$-adic differential equations over stacks. On one hand, we are going to study some $p$-adic analogous results of the Drinfeld's original lemma about the étale fundamental groups in the étale setting, in the context of $F$-isocrystals closely after Kedlaya and Kedlaya-Xu. We expect similar things could also be considered for diamonds after Scholze, in the context of Kedlaya-Liu's work namely the derived category of pseudocoherent Frobenius sheaves, which will induce some categorical form of Drinfeld's lemma for diamonds motivated by work of Carter-Kedlaya-Zábrádi and Pal-Zábrádi. On the other hand, we are going to establish the $\infty$-categorical theory of arithmetic $D$-modules after Abe and Gaitsgory-Lurie, which will allow one to construct the rigid Gross $G$-motives. And we are expecting to apply the whole machinery to revisit Weil's conjecture parallel to and after Gaitsgory-Lurie.

Geometric and Representation Theoretic Aspects of $p$-adic Motives

In this dissertation, we discuss mainly the corresponding geometric and representation theoretic aspects of relative $p$-adic Hodge theory and $p$-adic motives. To be more precise, we study the corresponding analytic geometry of the corresponding spaces over and attached to period rings in the relative $p$-adic Hodge theory, including derived topological de Rham complexes and derived topological logarithmic de Rham complexes after Bhatt, Gabber, Guo and Illusie which is in some sense equivalent to the derived prismatic cohomology of Bhatt-Scholze as shown in the work of Li-Liu, $\mathcal{O}\mathbb{B}_\mathrm{dR}$-sheaves after Scholze, $φ$-$\widetilde{C}_X$-sheaves and relative-$B$-pairs after Kedlaya-Liu, multidimensional rings after Carter-Kedlaya-Zábrádi and Pal-Zábrádi and many other possible general universal motivic rings or sheaves. Many contexts are expected to be sheafified, such as over Scholze's pro-étale sites of the considered analytic spaces by using perfectoids or the quasisyntomic sites by using quasiregular semiperfectoids as in the work of Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze and Bhatt-Scholze.

Topologization and Functional Analytification II: $\infty$-Categorical Motivic Constructions for Homotopical Contexts

This is our second scope of the consideration on the corresponding topologization and the corresponding functional analytification. We will focus on the corresponding functorial and motivic constructions in our current consideration. We consider topological motivic derived $I$-adic and derived $(p,I)$-adic cohomologies through derived de Rham complexes of Bhatt, Guo, Illusie, Morrow, Scholze, Frobenius sheaves over Robba rings of Kedlaya-Liu in certain derived $I$-adic and derived $(p,I)$-adic geometric context as what we defined for Bambozzi-Ben-Bassat-Kremnizer $\infty$-prestacks in our previous work in this series. The foundation we will work on will be based on the work of Bambozzi-Ben-Bassat-Kremnizer, Ben-Bassat-Mukherjee, Clausen-Scholze and Kelly-Kremnizer-Mukherjee, in order to promote the construction to even more general homotopical and $\infty$-categorical contexts. This gives us the chance to construct the functional analytic derived prismatic cohomology and derived preperfectoidizations, as well as the functional analytic derived logarithmic prismatic cohomology and derived logarithmic preperfectoidizations after Bhatt-Scholze and Koshikawa, in the framework of Bambozzi-Ben-Bassat-Kremnizer, Ben-Bassat-Mukherjee, Clausen-Scholze and Kelly-Kremnizer-Mukherjee.

VirtualCube: An Immersive 3D Video Communication System

The VirtualCube system is a 3D video conference system that attempts to overcome some limitations of conventional technologies. The key ingredient is VirtualCube, an abstract representation of a real-world cubicle instrumented with RGBD cameras for capturing the 3D geometry and texture of a user. We design VirtualCube so that the task of data capturing is standardized and significantly simplified, and everything can be built using off-the-shelf hardware. We use VirtualCubes as the basic building blocks of a virtual conferencing environment, and we provide each VirtualCube user with a surrounding display showing life-size videos of remote participants. To achieve real-time rendering of remote participants, we develop the V-Cube View algorithm, which uses multi-view stereo for more accurate depth estimation and Lumi-Net rendering for better rendering quality. The VirtualCube system correctly preserves the mutual eye gaze between participants, allowing them to establish eye contact and be aware of who is visually paying attention to them. The system also allows a participant to have side discussions with remote participants as if they were in the same room. Finally, the system sheds lights on how to support the shared space of work items (e.g., documents and applications) and track the visual attention of participants to work items.

DyOCl: a rare-earth based two-dimensional van der Waals material with strong magnetic anisotropy

Comparing with the widely known transitional metal based van der Waals (vdW) materials, rare-earth based ones are rarely explored in the research of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. In this work, we report the physical properties of DyOCl, a rare-earth based vdW magnetic insulator with direct band gap of $\sim 5.72~eV$. The magnetic order of bulk DyOCl is determined by neutron scattering as the $A$-type antiferromagnetic structure below the Néel temperature $T_N=10~$K. The large magnetic moment near 10.1 $ μ_{B} $/Dy lies parallel to the $a$-axis with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. At $2~K$, a moderate magnetic field ($\sim 2~T$) applied along the easy axis generates spin-flip transitions and polarizes DyOCl to a ferromagnetic state. Density functional theory calculations reveal an extremely large magnetic anisotropy energy ($-5850~μeV/Dy$) for DyOCl, indicating the great potentials to realize magnetism in 2D limit. Furthermore, the mechanical exfoliation of bulk DyOCl single crystals down to seven layers is demonstrated. Our findings suggest DyOCl is a promising material playground to investigate 2D $f$-electron magnetism and spintronic applications at the nanoscale.

$\infty$-Categorical Functional Analysis and $p$-adic Motives

We discuss the deep relationship between $\infty$-categorical functional analysis and the anticipated theory of $p$-adic motives. The motivation fundamentally comes from applications essentially in arithmetics from very broad perspectives. The $\infty$-categorical homotopical aspects we considered here come mainly from Bambozzi-Ben-Bassat-Kremnizer, Ben-Bassat-Mukherjee, Bambozzi-Kremnizer, Clausen-Scholze and Kelly-Kremnizer-Mukherjee, based on deep robust foundation of $\infty$-categorical solids and $\infty$-categorical ind-Banach or bornological modules over general Banach rings.

Asymmetric error control under imperfect supervision: a label-noise-adjusted Neyman-Pearson umbrella algorithm

Label noise in data has long been an important problem in supervised learning applications as it affects the effectiveness of many widely used classification methods. Recently, important real-world applications, such as medical diagnosis and cybersecurity, have generated renewed interest in the Neyman-Pearson (NP) classification paradigm, which constrains the more severe type of error (e.g., the type I error) under a preferred level while minimizing the other (e.g., the type II error). However, there has been little research on the NP paradigm under label noise. It is somewhat surprising that even when common NP classifiers ignore the label noise in the training stage, they are still able to control the type I error with high probability. However, the price they pay is excessive conservativeness of the type I error and hence a significant drop in power (i.e., $1 - $ type II error). Assuming that domain experts provide lower bounds on the corruption severity, we propose the first theory-backed algorithm that adapts most state-of-the-art classification methods to the training label noise under the NP paradigm. The resulting classifiers not only control the type I error with high probability under the desired level but also improve power.

Spline Positional Encoding for Learning 3D Implicit Signed Distance Fields

Multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) have been successfully used to represent 3D shapes implicitly and compactly, by mapping 3D coordinates to the corresponding signed distance values or occupancy values. In this paper, we propose a novel positional encoding scheme, called Spline Positional Encoding, to map the input coordinates to a high dimensional space before passing them to MLPs, for helping to recover 3D signed distance fields with fine-scale geometric details from unorganized 3D point clouds. We verified the superiority of our approach over other positional encoding schemes on tasks of 3D shape reconstruction from input point clouds and shape space learning. The efficacy of our approach extended to image reconstruction is also demonstrated and evaluated.

Ultrasensitive barocaloric material for room-temperature solid-state refrigeration

Solid-state refrigeration based on caloric effects is an energetically efficient and environmentally friendly technology, which is deemed as a potential alternative to the conventional vapor-compression technology. One of the greatest obstacles to the real application is the huge driving fields. Here, we report a giant barocaloric effect in inorganic NH4I with maximum entropy changes of ΔS_BCE^max ~89 J K-1 kg-1 around room temperature, associated with the orientationally order-disorder phase transition. The phase transition temperature, Tt, varies dramatically with pressure in a rate of dTt/dP ~0.81 K MPa-1, which leads to a very much small saturation driving pressure of ΔP ~20 MPa, an unprecedentedly large caloric strength of |ΔS_BCE^max/ΔP| ~4.45 J K-1 kg-1 MPa-1, as well as a broad temperature window of ~68 K under an 80 MPa driving pressure. Comprehensive characterization of the crystal structure and dynamics by neutron scattering measurements reveals a strong reorientation-vibration coupling that is responsible for the large pressure sensitivity of Tt. This work is expected to advance the practical application of barocaloric refrigeration.

Statistics in everyone's backyard: an impact study via citation network analysis

The increasing availability of curated citation data provides a wealth of resources for analyzing and understanding the intellectual influence of scientific publications. In the field of statistics, current studies of citation data have mostly focused on the interactions between statistical journals and papers, limiting the measure of influence to mainly within statistics itself. In this paper, we take the first step towards understanding the impact statistics has made on other scientific fields in the era of Big Data. By collecting comprehensive bibliometric data from the Web of Science database for selected statistical journals, we investigate the citation trends and compositions of citing fields over time to show that their diversity has been increasing. Furthermore, we use the local clustering technique involving personalized PageRank with conductance for size selection to find the most relevant statistical research area for a given external topic of interest. We provide theoretical guarantees for the procedure and, through a number of case studies, show the results from our citation data align well with our knowledge and intuition about these external topics. Overall, we have found that the statistical theory and methods recently invented by the statistics community have made increasing impact on other scientific fields.

Myopic Bike and Say Hi: Games for Empathizing with The Myopic

Myopia is an eye condition that makes it difficult for people to focus on faraway objects. It has become one of the most serious eye conditions worldwide and negatively impacts the quality of life of those who suffer from it. Although myopia is prevalent, many non-myopic people have misconceptions about it and encounter challenges empathizing with myopia situations and those who suffer from it. In this research, we developed two virtual reality (VR) games, (1) Myopic Bike and (2) Say Hi, to provide a means for the non-myopic population to experience the frustration and difficulties of myopic people. Our two games simulate two inconvenient daily life scenarios (riding a bicycle and greeting someone on the street) that myopic people encounter when not wearing glasses. We evaluated four participants' game experiences through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Overall, our two VR games can create an engaging and non-judgmental experience for the non-myopic population to better understand and empathize with those who suffer from myopia.

Field-Tuned Quantum Effects in a Triangular-Lattice Ising Magnet

We report thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements of the triangular-lattice quantum Ising magnet TmMgGaO 4 in longitudinal magnetic fields. Our experiments reveal a quasi-plateau state induced by quantum fluctuations. This state exhibits an unconventional non-monotonic field and temperature dependence of the magnetic order and excitation gap. In the high field regime where the quantum fluctuations are largely suppressed, we observed a disordered state with coherent magnon-like excitations despite the suppression of the spin excitation intensity. Through detailed semi-classical calculations, we are able to understand these behaviors quantitatively from the subtle competition between quantum fluctuations and frustrated Ising interactions.

Joint Multi-User Communication and Sensing Exploiting Both Signal and Environment Sparsity

As a potential technology feature for 6G wireless networks, the idea of sensing-communication integration requires the system not only to complete reliable multi-user communication but also to achieve accurate environment sensing. In this paper, we consider such a joint communication and sensing (JCAS) scenario, in which multiple users use the sparse code multiple access (SCMA) scheme to communicate with the wireless access point (AP). Part of the user signals are scattered by the environment object and reflected by an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) before they arrive at the AP. We exploit the sparsity of both the structured user signals and the unstructured environment and propose an iterative and incremental joint multi-user communication and environment sensing scheme, in which the two processes, i.e., multi-user information detection and environment object detection, interweave with each other thanks to their intrinsic mutual dependence. The proposed algorithm is sliding-window based and also graph based, which can keep on sensing the environment as long as there are illuminating user signals. The trade-off relationship between the key system parameters is analyzed, and the simulation result validates the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

High-Resolution Optical Flow from 1D Attention and Correlation

Optical flow is inherently a 2D search problem, and thus the computational complexity grows quadratically with respect to the search window, making large displacements matching infeasible for high-resolution images. In this paper, we take inspiration from Transformers and propose a new method for high-resolution optical flow estimation with significantly less computation. Specifically, a 1D attention operation is first applied in the vertical direction of the target image, and then a simple 1D correlation in the horizontal direction of the attended image is able to achieve 2D correspondence modeling effect. The directions of attention and correlation can also be exchanged, resulting in two 3D cost volumes that are concatenated for optical flow estimation. The novel 1D formulation empowers our method to scale to very high-resolution input images while maintaining competitive performance. Extensive experiments on Sintel, KITTI and real-world 4K ($2160 \times 3840$) resolution images demonstrated the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed method. Indoor Scene Generation from a Collection of Semantic-Segmented Depth Images

We present a method for creating 3D indoor scenes with a generative model learned from a collection of semantic-segmented depth images captured from different unknown scenes. Given a room with a specified size, our method automatically generates 3D objects in a room from a randomly sampled latent code. Different from existing methods that represent an indoor scene with the type, location, and other properties of objects in the room and learn the scene layout from a collection of complete 3D indoor scenes, our method models each indoor scene as a 3D semantic scene volume and learns a volumetric generative adversarial network (GAN) from a collection of 2.5D partial observations of 3D scenes. To this end, we apply a differentiable projection layer to project the generated 3D semantic scene volumes into semantic-segmented depth images and design a new multiple-view discriminator for learning the complete 3D scene volume from 2.5D semantic-segmented depth images. Compared to existing methods, our method not only efficiently reduces the workload of modeling and acquiring 3D scenes for training, but also produces better object shapes and their detailed layouts in the scene. We evaluate our method with different indoor scene datasets and demonstrate the advantages of our method. We also extend our method for generating 3D indoor scenes from semantic-segmented depth images inferred from RGB images of real scenes.

StyleCariGAN: Caricature Generation via StyleGAN Feature Map Modulation

We present a caricature generation framework based on shape and style manipulation using StyleGAN. Our framework, dubbed StyleCariGAN, automatically creates a realistic and detailed caricature from an input photo with optional controls on shape exaggeration degree and color stylization type. The key component of our method is shape exaggeration blocks that are used for modulating coarse layer feature maps of StyleGAN to produce desirable caricature shape exaggerations. We first build a layer-mixed StyleGAN for photo-to-caricature style conversion by swapping fine layers of the StyleGAN for photos to the corresponding layers of the StyleGAN trained to generate caricatures. Given an input photo, the layer-mixed model produces detailed color stylization for a caricature but without shape exaggerations. We then append shape exaggeration blocks to the coarse layers of the layer-mixed model and train the blocks to create shape exaggerations while preserving the characteristic appearances of the input. Experimental results show that our StyleCariGAN generates realistic and detailed caricatures compared to the current state-of-the-art methods. We demonstrate StyleCariGAN also supports other StyleGAN-based image manipulations, such as facial expression control.

Imbalanced classification: a paradigm-based review

A common issue for classification in scientific research and industry is the existence of imbalanced classes. When sample sizes of different classes are imbalanced in training data, naively implementing a classification method often leads to unsatisfactory prediction results on test data. Multiple resampling techniques have been proposed to address the class imbalance issues. Yet, there is no general guidance on when to use each technique. In this article, we provide a paradigm-based review of the common resampling techniques for binary classification under imbalanced class sizes. The paradigms we consider include the classical paradigm that minimizes the overall classification error, the cost-sensitive learning paradigm that minimizes a cost-adjusted weighted type I and type II errors, and the Neyman-Pearson paradigm that minimizes the type II error subject to a type I error constraint. Under each paradigm, we investigate the combination of the resampling techniques and a few state-of-the-art classification methods. For each pair of resampling techniques and classification methods, we use simulation studies and a real data set on credit card fraud to study the performance under different evaluation metrics. From these extensive numerical experiments, we demonstrate under each classification paradigm, the complex dynamics among resampling techniques, base classification methods, evaluation metrics, and imbalance ratios. We also summarize a few takeaway messages regarding the choices of resampling techniques and base classification methods, which could be helpful for practitioners.
