Strong light-matter interactions between gap plasmons and two-dimensional excitons at ambient condition in a deterministic way

Strong exciton-plasmon interaction between the layered two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors and gap plasmons shows a great potential to implement cavity quantum-electrodynamics in ambient condition. However, achieving a robust plasmon-exciton coupling with nanocavity is still very challenging, because the layer area is usually small with conventional approaches. Here, we report on a robust strong exciton-plasmon coupling between the gap mode of bowtie and the excitons in MoS$_2$ layers with gold-assisted mechanical exfoliation and the nondestructive wet transfer techniques for large-area layer. Benefiting from the ultrasmall mode volume and strong in-plane field, the estimated effective exciton number contributing to the coupling is largely reduced. With a corrected exciton transition dipole moment, the exciton numbers are extracted with 40 for the case of monolayer and 48 for 8 layers. Our work paves a way to realize the strong coupling with 2D materials with few excitons at room temperature.

Federated Unlearning via Class-Discriminative Pruning

We explore the problem of selectively forgetting categories from trained CNN classification models in the federated learning (FL). Given that the data used for training cannot be accessed globally in FL, our insights probe deep into the internal influence of each channel. Through the visualization of feature maps activated by different channels, we observe that different channels have a varying contribution to different categories in image classification. Inspired by this, we propose a method for scrubbing the model clean of information about particular categories. The method does not require retraining from scratch, nor global access to the data used for training. Instead, we introduce the concept of Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) to quantize the class discrimination of channels. Channels with high TF-IDF scores have more discrimination on the target categories and thus need to be pruned to unlearn. The channel pruning is followed by a fine-tuning process to recover the performance of the pruned model. Evaluated on CIFAR10 dataset, our method accelerates the speed of unlearning by 8.9x for the ResNet model, and 7.9x for the VGG model under no degradation in accuracy, compared to retraining from scratch. For CIFAR100 dataset, the speedups are 9.9x and 8.4x, respectively. We envision this work as a complementary block for FL towards compliance with legal and ethical criteria.

Enhanced valley polarization in WS$_2$/LaMnO$_3$ heterostructure

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted great attentions for potential applications in valleytronics. However, the valley polarization degree is usually not high because of the intervalley scattering. Here, we demonstrate a largely enhanced valley polarization up to 80\% in monolayer WS$_2$ under non-resonant excitation at 4.2 K using WS$_2$/LaMnO$_3$ thin film heterostructure, which is much higher than that for monolayer WS$_2$ on SiO$_2$/Si substrate with a valley polarization of 15\%. Furthermore, the greatly enhanced valley polarization can be maintained to a high temperature of about 160 K with a valley polarization of 53\%. The temperature dependence of valley polarization is strongly correlated with the thermomagnetic curve of LaMnO$_3$, indicating an exciton-magnon coupling between WS$_2$ and LaMnO$_3$. A simple model is introduced to illustrate the underlying mechanisms. The coupling of WS$_2$ and LaMnO$_3$ is further confirmed with an observation of two interlayer excitons with opposite valley polarizations in the heterostructure, resulting from the spin-orbit coupling induced splitting of the conduction bands in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Our results provide a pathway to control the valleytronic properties of transition metal dichalcogenides by means of ferromagnetic van der Waals engineering, paving a way to practical valleytronic applications.

Coherent control of spin tunneling in a spin-orbit coupled bosonic triple well

We study the coherent control of spin tunneling for a spin-orbit (SO) coupled boson held in a driven triple well. Under high-frequency approximation, we analytically obtain the quasienergies of the SO-coupled bosonic triple-well system and fine energy band structure is displayed. By adjusting the driving parameters, we reveal that the directed selective spin-flipping or spin-conserving tunneling of a SO-coupled boson occurs along different pathways and in different directions. The analytical results are numerically confirmed and perfect agreements are found. Further, a scheme of quantum spin switch with or without spin-flipping is presented. These results may be useful for quantum information processing and the design of spintronic devices.

Normal vs. Adversarial: Salience-based Analysis of Adversarial Samples for Relation Extraction

Recent neural-based relation extraction approaches, though achieving promising improvement on benchmark datasets, have reported their vulnerability towards adversarial attacks. Thus far, efforts mostly focused on generating adversarial samples or defending adversarial attacks, but little is known about the difference between normal and adversarial samples. In this work, we take the first step to leverage the salience-based method to analyze those adversarial samples. We observe that salience tokens have a direct correlation with adversarial perturbations. We further find the adversarial perturbations are either those tokens not existing in the training set or superficial cues associated with relation labels. To some extent, our approach unveils the characters against adversarial samples. We release an open-source testbed, "DiagnoseAdv" in https://github.com/zjunlp/DiagnoseAdv.

Optimization and robustness of topological corner state in second-order topological photonic crystal

The second-order topological photonic crystal with 0D corner state provides a new way to investigate cavity quantum electrodynamics and develop topological nanophotonic devices with diverse functionalities. Here, we report on the optimization and robustness of topological corner state in the second-order topological photonic crystal both in theory and in experiment. The topological nanocavity is formed based on the 2D generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The quality factor of corner state is optimized theoretically and experimentally by changing the gap between two photonic crystals or just modulating the position or size of the airholes surrounding the corner. The fabricated quality factors are further optimized by the surface passivation treatment which reduces surface absorption. A maximum quality factor of the fabricated devices is about 6000, which is the highest value ever reported for the active topological corner state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the robustness of corner state against strong disorders including the bulk defect, edge defect, and even corner defect. Our results lay a solid foundation for the further investigations and applications of the topological corner state, such as the investigation of strong coupling regime and the development of optical devices for topological nanophotonic circuitry.

Disentangled Contrastive Learning for Learning Robust Textual Representations

Although the self-supervised pre-training of transformer models has resulted in the revolutionizing of natural language processing (NLP) applications and the achievement of state-of-the-art results with regard to various benchmarks, this process is still vulnerable to small and imperceptible permutations originating from legitimate inputs. Intuitively, the representations should be similar in the feature space with subtle input permutations, while large variations occur with different meanings. This motivates us to investigate the learning of robust textual representation in a contrastive manner. However, it is non-trivial to obtain opposing semantic instances for textual samples. In this study, we propose a disentangled contrastive learning method that separately optimizes the uniformity and alignment of representations without negative sampling. Specifically, we introduce the concept of momentum representation consistency to align features and leverage power normalization while conforming the uniformity. Our experimental results for the NLP benchmarks demonstrate that our approach can obtain better results compared with the baselines, as well as achieve promising improvements with invariance tests and adversarial attacks. The code is available in https://github.com/zxlzr/DCL.

Document-level Relation Extraction as Semantic Segmentation

Document-level relation extraction aims to extract relations among multiple entity pairs from a document. Previously proposed graph-based or transformer-based models utilize the entities independently, regardless of global information among relational triples. This paper approaches the problem by predicting an entity-level relation matrix to capture local and global information, parallel to the semantic segmentation task in computer vision. Herein, we propose a Document U-shaped Network for document-level relation extraction. Specifically, we leverage an encoder module to capture the context information of entities and a U-shaped segmentation module over the image-style feature map to capture global interdependency among triples. Experimental results show that our approach can obtain state-of-the-art performance on three benchmark datasets DocRED, CDR, and GDA.

Topological cavity based on slow light topological edge mode for broadband Purcell enhancement

Slow light in topological valley photonic crystal structures offers new possibilities to enhance light-matter interaction. We report a topological cavity based on slow light topological edge mode for broadband Purcell enhancement. The topological edge modes with large group indices over 100 can be realized with a bearded interface between two topologically distinct valley photonic crystals, featuring the greatly enhanced Purcell factor because of the increased local density of states. In the slow light regime, the topological cavity supports much more cavity modes with higher quality factor than that in the fast light regime, which is both demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. We demonstrate the cavity enables the broadband Purcell enhancement together with substantial Purcell factor, benefiting from dense cavity modes with high quality factor in a wide spectral range. It has great benefit to the realization of high-efficiency quantum-dot-based single-photon sources and entangled-photon sources with less restriction on spectral match. Such topological cavity could serve as a significant building block toward the development of photonic integrated circuits with embedded quantum emitters.

Chiral photonic circuits for deterministic spin transfer

Chiral quantum optics has attracted considerable interest in the field of quantum information science. Exploiting the spin-polarization properties of quantum emitters and engineering rational photonic nanostructures has made it possible to transform information from spin to path encoding. Here, compact chiral photonic circuits with deterministic circularly polarized chiral routing and beamsplitting are demonstrated using two laterally adjacent waveguides coupled with quantum dots. Chiral routing arises from the electromagnetic field chirality in waveguide, and beamsplitting is obtained via the evanescent field coupling. The spin- and position-dependent directional spontaneous emission are achieved by spatially selective micro-photoluminescence measurements, with a chiral contrast of up to 0.84 in the chiral photonic circuits. This makes a significant advancement for broadening the application scenarios of chiral quantum optics and developing scalable quantum photonic networks.

ZJUKLAB at SemEval-2021 Task 4: Negative Augmentation with Language Model for Reading Comprehension of Abstract Meaning

This paper presents our systems for the three Subtasks of SemEval Task4: Reading Comprehension of Abstract Meaning (ReCAM). We explain the algorithms used to learn our models and the process of tuning the algorithms and selecting the best model. Inspired by the similarity of the ReCAM task and the language pre-training, we propose a simple yet effective technology, namely, negative augmentation with language model. Evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Our models achieve the 4th rank on both official test sets of Subtask 1 and Subtask 2 with an accuracy of 87.9% and an accuracy of 92.8%, respectively. We further conduct comprehensive model analysis and observe interesting error cases, which may promote future researches.

Enhanced emission from a single quantum dot in a microdisk at a deterministic diabolical point

We report on controllable cavity modes through controlling the backscattering by two identical scatterers. Periodic changes of the backscattering coupling between two degenerate cavity modes are observed with the angle between two scatterers and elucidated by a theoretical model using two-mode approximation and numerical simulations. The periodically appearing single-peak cavity modes indicate mode degeneracy at diabolical points. Then interactions between single quantum dots and cavity modes are investigated. Enhanced emission of a quantum dot with a six-fold intensity increase is obtained in a microdisk at a diabolical point. This method to control cavity modes allows large-scale integration, high reproducibility and fexible design of the size, location, quantity and shape for scatterers, which can be applied for integrated photonic structures with scatterer-modified light-matter interaction.

Position-dependent chiral coupling between single quantum dots and cross waveguides

Chiral light-matter interaction between photonic nanostructures with quantum emitters shows great potential to implement spin-photon interfaces for quantum information processing. Position-dependent spin momentum locking of the quantum emitter is important for these chiral coupled nanostructures. Here, we report the position-dependent chiral coupling between quantum dots (QDs) and cross waveguides both numerically and experimentally. Four quantum dots distributed at different positions in the cross section are selected to characterize the chiral properties of the device. Directional emission is achieved in a single waveguide as well as in both two waveguides simultaneously. In addition, the QD position can be determined with the chiral contrasts from four outputs. Therefore, the cross waveguide can function as a one-way unidirectional waveguide and a circularly polarized beam splitter by placing the QD in a rational position, which has potential applications in spin-to-path encoding for complex quantum optical networks at the single-photon level.

Strong Triplet-Exciton-LO-Phonon Coupling in Two-Dimensional Layered Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Single Crystal Microflakes

Two-dimensional (2D) layered hybrid perovskites provide an ideal platform for studying the properties of excitons. Here, we report on a strong triplet-exciton and longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon coupling in 2D (C6H5CH2CH2NH3, PEA)2PbBr4 perovskites. The triplet excitons exhibit strong photoluminescence (PL) in thick perovskite microflakes, and the PL is not detectable for monolayer microflakes. The coupling strength of the triplet exciton-LO phonon is approximately two to three times greater than that of the singlet exciton-LO phonon with a LO phonon energy of about 21 meV. This difference might due to the different locations of singlet excitons located in the well and triplet excitons located in the barrier in the 2D layered perovskite. Revealing the strong coupling of triplet exciton-LO phonon provides a fundamental understanding of many-body interaction in hybrid perovskites, which is useful to develop and optimize the optoelectronic devices based on 2D perovskites in the future.

Large photoluminescence enhancement by an out-of-plane magnetic field in exfoliated WS$_2$ flakes

We report an out-of-plane magnetic field induced large photoluminescence enhancement in WS${}_2$ flakes at $4$ K, in contrast to the photoluminescence enhancement provided by in-plane field in general. Two mechanisms for the enhancement are proposed. One is a larger overlap of electron and hole caused by the magnetic field induced confinement. The other is that the energy difference between $Λ$ and K valleys is reduced by magnetic field, and thus enhancing the corresponding indirect-transition trions. Meanwhile, the Landé g factor of the trion is measured as $-0.8$, whose absolute value is much smaller than normal exciton, which is around $|-4|$. A model for the trion g factor is presented, confirming that the smaller absolute value of Landé g factor is a behavior of this $Λ$-K trion. By extending the valley space, we believe this work provides a further understanding of the valleytronics in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

Observation of Efimov Universality across a Non-Universal Feshbach Resonance in \textsuperscript{39}K

We study three-atom inelastic scattering in ultracold \textsuperscript{39}K near a Feshbach resonance of intermediate coupling strength. The non-universal character of such resonance leads to an abnormally large Efimov absolute length scale and a relatively small effective range $r_e$, allowing the features of the \textsuperscript{39}K Efimov spectrum to be better isolated from the short-range physics. Meticulous characterization of and correction for finite temperature effects ensure high accuracy on the measurements of these features at large-magnitude scattering lengths. For a single Feshbach resonance, we unambiguously locate four distinct features in the Efimov structure. Three of these features form ratios that obey the Efimov universal scaling to within 10\%, while the fourth feature, occurring at a value of scattering length closest to $r_e$, instead deviates from the universal value.

Electron and hole g tensors of neutral and charged excitons in single quantum dots by high-resolution photocurrent spectroscopy

We report a high-resolution photocurrent (PC) spectroscopy of a single self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) embedded in an n-i-Schottky device with an applied vector magnetic field. The PC spectra of positively charged exciton (X$^+$) and neutral exciton (X$^0$) are obtained by two-color resonant excitation. With an applied magnetic field in Voigt geometry, the double $Λ$ energy level structure of X$^+$ and the dark states of X$^0$ are observed in PC spectra clearly. In Faraday geometry, the PC amplitude of X$^+$ decreases and then quenches with the increasing of the magnetic field, which provides a new way to determine the relative sign of the electron and the hole g-factors. With an applied vector magnetic field, the electron and the hole g-factor tensors of X$^+$ and X$^0$ are obtained. The anisotropy of the hole g-factors of both X$^+$ and X$^0$ is larger than that of the electron.

Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics with Second-Order Topological Corner State

Topological photonics provides a new paradigm in studying cavity quantum electrodynamics with robustness to disorder. In this work, we demonstrate the coupling between single quantum dots and the second-order topological corner state. Based on the second-order topological corner state, a topological photonic crystal cavity is designed and fabricated into GaAs slabs with quantum dots embedded. The coexistence of corner state and edge state with high quality factor close to 2000 is observed. The enhancement of photoluminescence intensity and emission rate are both observed when the quantum dot is on resonance with the corner state. This result enables the application of topology into cavity quantum electrodynamics, offering an approach to topological devices for quantum information processing.
