Particle swarm optimization with state-based adaptive velocity limit strategy

Velocity limit (VL) has been widely adopted in many variants of particle swarm optimization (PSO) to prevent particles from searching outside the solution space. Several adaptive VL strategies have been introduced with which the performance of PSO can be improved. However, the existing adaptive VL strategies simply adjust their VL based on iterations, leading to unsatisfactory optimization results because of the incompatibility between VL and the current searching state of particles. To deal with this problem, a novel PSO variant with state-based adaptive velocity limit strategy (PSO-SAVL) is proposed. In the proposed PSO-SAVL, VL is adaptively adjusted based on the evolutionary state estimation (ESE) in which a high value of VL is set for global searching state and a low value of VL is set for local searching state. Besides that, limit handling strategies have been modified and adopted to improve the capability of avoiding local optima. The good performance of PSO-SAVL has been experimentally validated on a wide range of benchmark functions with 50 dimensions. The satisfactory scalability of PSO-SAVL in high-dimension and large-scale problems is also verified. Besides, the merits of the strategies in PSO-SAVL are verified in experiments. Sensitivity analysis for the relevant hyper-parameters in state-based adaptive VL strategy is conducted, and insights in how to select these hyper-parameters are also discussed.

Artificial-Intelligence-Based Triple Phase Shift Modulation for Dual Active Bridge Converter with Minimized Current Stress

The dual active bridge (DAB) converter has been popular in many applications for its outstanding power density and bidirectional power transfer capacity. Up to now, triple phase shift (TPS) can be considered as one of the most advanced modulation techniques for DAB converter. It can widen zero voltage switching range and improve power efficiency significantly. Currently, current stress of the DAB converter has been an important performance indicator when TPS modulation is applied for smaller size and higher efficiency. However, to minimize the current stress when the DAB converter is under TPS modulation, two difficulties exist in analysis process and realization process, respectively. Firstly, three degrees of modulation variables in TPS modulation bring challenges to the analysis of current stress in different operating modes. This analysis and deduction process leads to heavy computational burden and also suffers from low accuracy. Secondly, to realize TPS modulation, if a lookup table is adopted after the optimization of modulation variables, modulation performance will be unsatisfactory because of the discrete nature of lookup table. Therefore, an AI-based TPS modulation (AI-TPSM) strategy is proposed in this paper. Neural network (NN) and fuzzy inference system (FIS) are utilized to deal with the two difficulties mentioned above. With the proposed AI-TPSM, the optimization of TPS modulation for minimized current stress will enjoy high degree of automation which can relieve engineers' working burden and improve accuracy. In the end of this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed AI-TPSM has been experimentally verified with a 1 kW prototype.

Artificial-Intelligence-Based Hybrid Extended Phase Shift Modulation for the Dual Active Bridge Converter with Full ZVS Range and Optimal Efficiency

Dual active bridge (DAB) converter is the key enabler in many popular applications such as wireless charging, electric vehicle and renewable energy. ZVS range and efficiency are two significant performance indicators for DAB converter. To obtain the desired ZVS and efficiency performance, modulation should be carefully designed. Hybrid modulation considers several single modulation strategies to achieve good comprehensive performance. Conventionally, to design a hybrid modulation, harmonic approach or piecewise approach is used, but they suffer from time-consuming model building process and inaccuracy. Therefore, an artificial-intelligence-based hybrid extended phase shift (HEPS) modulation is proposed. Generally, the HEPS modulation is developed in an automated fashion, which alleviates cumbersome model building process while keeping high model accuracy. In HEPS modulation, two EPS strategies are considered to realize optimal efficiency with full ZVS operation over entire operating ranges. Specifically, to build data-driven models of ZVS and efficiency performance, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), which is a state-of-the-art ensemble learning algorithm, is adopted. Afterwards, particle swarm optimization with state-based adaptive velocity limit (PSO-SAVL) is utilized to select the best EPS strategy and optimize modulation parameters. With 1 kW hardware experiments, the feasibility of HEPS has been verified, achieving optimal efficiency with maximum of 97.1% and full-range ZVS operation.

Priming Cross-Session Motor Imagery Classification with A Universal Deep Domain Adaptation Framework

Motor imagery (MI) is a common brain computer interface (BCI) paradigm. EEG is non-stationary with low signal-to-noise, classifying motor imagery tasks of the same participant from different EEG recording sessions is generally challenging, as EEG data distribution may vary tremendously among different acquisition sessions. Although it is intuitive to consider the cross-session MI classification as a domain adaptation problem, the rationale and feasible approach is not elucidated. In this paper, we propose a Siamese deep domain adaptation (SDDA) framework for cross-session MI classification based on mathematical models in domain adaptation theory. The proposed framework can be easily applied to most existing artificial neural networks without altering the network structure, which facilitates our method with great flexibility and transferability. In the proposed framework, domain invariants were firstly constructed jointly with channel normalization and Euclidean alignment. Then, embedding features from source and target domain were mapped into the Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS) and aligned accordingly. A cosine-based center loss was also integrated into the framework to improve the generalizability of the SDDA. The proposed framework was validated with two classic and popular convolutional neural networks from BCI research field (EEGNet and ConvNet) in two MI-EEG public datasets (BCI Competition IV IIA, IIB). Compared to the vanilla EEGNet and ConvNet, the proposed SDDA framework was able to boost the MI classification accuracy by 15.2%, 10.2% respectively in IIA dataset, and 5.5%, 4.2% in IIB dataset. The final MI classification accuracy reached 82.01% in IIA dataset and 87.52% in IIB, which outperformed the state-of-the-art methods in the literature.

Holistic Exploration on Universal Decompositional Semantic Parsing: Architecture, Data Augmentation, and LLM Paradigm

In this paper, we conduct a holistic exploration of the Universal Decompositional Semantic (UDS) Parsing. We first introduce a cascade model for UDS parsing that decomposes the complex parsing task into semantically appropriate subtasks. Our approach outperforms the prior models, while significantly reducing inference time. We also incorporate syntactic information and further optimized the architecture. Besides, different ways for data augmentation are explored, which further improve the UDS Parsing. Lastly, we conduct experiments to investigate the efficacy of ChatGPT in handling the UDS task, revealing that it excels in attribute parsing but struggles in relation parsing, and using ChatGPT for data augmentation yields suboptimal results. Our code is available at https://github.com/hexuandeng/HExp4UDS.

Collaborative Graph Neural Networks for Attributed Network Embedding

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have shown prominent performance on attributed network embedding. However, existing efforts mainly focus on exploiting network structures, while the exploitation of node attributes is rather limited as they only serve as node features at the initial layer. This simple strategy impedes the potential of node attributes in augmenting node connections, leading to limited receptive field for inactive nodes with few or even no neighbors. Furthermore, the training objectives (i.e., reconstructing network structures) of most GNNs also do not include node attributes, although studies have shown that reconstructing node attributes is beneficial. Thus, it is encouraging to deeply involve node attributes in the key components of GNNs, including graph convolution operations and training objectives. However, this is a nontrivial task since an appropriate way of integration is required to maintain the merits of GNNs. To bridge the gap, in this paper, we propose COllaborative graph Neural Networks--CONN, a tailored GNN architecture for attribute network embedding. It improves model capacity by 1) selectively diffusing messages from neighboring nodes and involved attribute categories, and 2) jointly reconstructing node-to-node and node-to-attribute-category interactions via cross-correlation. Experiments on real-world networks demonstrate that CONN excels state-of-the-art embedding algorithms with a great margin.

Statistical analysis for a penalized EM algorithm in high-dimensional mixture linear regression model

The expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm and its variants are widely used in statistics. In high-dimensional mixture linear regression, the model is assumed to be a finite mixture of linear regression and the number of predictors is much larger than the sample size. The standard EM algorithm, which attempts to find the maximum likelihood estimator, becomes infeasible for such model. We devise a group lasso penalized EM algorithm and study its statistical properties. Existing theoretical results of regularized EM algorithms often rely on dividing the sample into many independent batches and employing a fresh batch of sample in each iteration of the algorithm. Our algorithm and theoretical analysis do not require sample-splitting, and can be extended to multivariate response cases. The proposed methods also have encouraging performances in numerical studies.

PPN: Parallel Pointer-based Network for Key Information Extraction with Complex Layouts

Key Information Extraction (KIE) is a challenging multimodal task that aims to extract structured value semantic entities from visually rich documents. Although significant progress has been made, there are still two major challenges that need to be addressed. Firstly, the layout of existing datasets is relatively fixed and limited in the number of semantic entity categories, creating a significant gap between these datasets and the complex real-world scenarios. Secondly, existing methods follow a two-stage pipeline strategy, which may lead to the error propagation problem. Additionally, they are difficult to apply in situations where unseen semantic entity categories emerge. To address the first challenge, we propose a new large-scale human-annotated dataset named Complex Layout form for key information EXtraction (CLEX), which consists of 5,860 images with 1,162 semantic entity categories. To solve the second challenge, we introduce Parallel Pointer-based Network (PPN), an end-to-end model that can be applied in zero-shot and few-shot scenarios. PPN leverages the implicit clues between semantic entities to assist extracting, and its parallel extraction mechanism allows it to extract multiple results simultaneously and efficiently. Experiments on the CLEX dataset demonstrate that PPN outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods while also offering a much faster inference speed.

The 21-cm forest as a simultaneous probe of dark matter and cosmic heating history

The absorption features in spectra of high-redshift background radio sources, caused by hyperfine structure lines of hydrogen atoms in the intervening structures, are known collectively as the 21-cm forest. They provide a unique probe of small-scale structures during the epoch of reionization, and can be used to constrain the properties of the dark matter (DM) thought to govern small-scale structure formation. However, the signals are easily suppressed by heating processes that are degenerate with a warm DM model. Here we propose a probe of both the DM particle mass and the heating history of the Universe, using the one-dimensional power spectrum of the 21-cm forest. The one-dimensional power spectrum measurement not only breaks the DM model degeneracy but also increases the sensitivity, making the probe actually feasible. Making 21-cm forest observations with the upcoming Square Kilometre Array has the potential to simultaneously determine both the DM particle mass and the heating level in the early Universe, shedding light on the nature of DM and the first galaxies.

Adaptive Domain Generalization via Online Disagreement Minimization

Deep neural networks suffer from significant performance deterioration when there exists distribution shift between deployment and training. Domain Generalization (DG) aims to safely transfer a model to unseen target domains by only relying on a set of source domains. Although various DG approaches have been proposed, a recent study named DomainBed, reveals that most of them do not beat the simple Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM). To this end, we propose a general framework that is orthogonal to existing DG algorithms and could improve their performance consistently. Unlike previous DG works that stake on a static source model to be hopefully a universal one, our proposed AdaODM adaptively modifies the source model at test time for different target domains. Specifically, we create multiple domain-specific classifiers upon a shared domain-generic feature extractor. The feature extractor and classifiers are trained in an adversarial way, where the feature extractor embeds the input samples into a domain-invariant space, and the multiple classifiers capture the distinct decision boundaries that each of them relates to a specific source domain. During testing, distribution differences between target and source domains could be effectively measured by leveraging prediction disagreement among source classifiers. By fine-tuning source models to minimize the disagreement at test time, target domain features are well aligned to the invariant feature space. We verify AdaODM on two popular DG methods, namely ERM and CORAL, and four DG benchmarks, namely VLCS, PACS, OfficeHome, and TerraIncognita. The results show AdaODM stably improves the generalization capacity on unseen domains and achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Threshold-independent method for single-shot readout of spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots

The single-shot readout data process is essential for the realization of high-fidelity qubits and fault-tolerant quantum algorithms in semiconductor quantum dots. However, the fidelity and visibility of the readout process is sensitive to the choice of the thresholds and limited by the experimental hardware. By demonstrating the linear dependence between the measured spin state probabilities and readout visibilities along with dark counts, we describe an alternative threshold-independent method for the single-shot readout of spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots. We can obtain the extrapolated spin state probabilities of the prepared probabilities of the excited spin state through the threshold-independent method. Then, we analyze the corresponding errors of the method, finding that errors of the extrapolated probabilities cannot be neglected with no constraints on the readout time and threshold voltage. Therefore, by limiting the readout time and threshold voltage we ensure the accuracy of the extrapolated probability. Then, we prove that the efficiency and robustness of this method is 60 times larger than that of the most commonly used method. Moreover, we discuss the influence of the electron temperature on the effective area with a fixed external magnetic field and provide a preliminary demonstration for a single-shot readout up to 0.7 K/1.5T in the future.

HI intensity mapping with MeerKAT: forecast for delay power spectrum measurement using interferometer mode

Neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping (IM) surveys are considered a promising tool for investigating the expansion history of the Universe. In this work, we explore the potential of MeerKAT HI IM observations in interferometer mode to estimate the power spectrum and constrain cosmological parameters within typical dark energy models. We employ an approach called the "delay spectrum," which allows us to separate the weak HI signal from foreground contamination in the frequency domain. Our findings indicate that the choice of survey fields significantly impacts the fractional errors on the power spectrum ($ΔP/P$) within a limited observational time of 10 hours. As the integration time increases from 10 hours to 10,000 hours, $ΔP/P$ progressively decreases until cosmic variance begins to dominate. For a total observation time of 10,000 hours, the lowest $ΔP/P$ at low $k$ can be achieved by tracking 100 points for MeerKAT L-band (900-1200 MHz) and 10 points for MeerKAT UHF-band (580-1000 MHz). Next, we assess the performance of HI IM in constraining typical dark energy models. We find that MeerKAT HI IM survey in interferometer mode demonstrates limited capability in constraining the dark-energy equation of state, even when combined with Planck data.

Cross-Camera Trajectories Help Person Retrieval in a Camera Network

We are concerned with retrieving a query person from multiple videos captured by a non-overlapping camera network. Existing methods often rely on purely visual matching or consider temporal constraints but ignore the spatial information of the camera network. To address this issue, we propose a pedestrian retrieval framework based on cross-camera trajectory generation, which integrates both temporal and spatial information. To obtain pedestrian trajectories, we propose a novel cross-camera spatio-temporal model that integrates pedestrians' walking habits and the path layout between cameras to form a joint probability distribution. Such a spatio-temporal model among a camera network can be specified using sparsely sampled pedestrian data. Based on the spatio-temporal model, cross-camera trajectories can be extracted by the conditional random field model and further optimized by restricted non-negative matrix factorization. Finally, a trajectory re-ranking technique is proposed to improve the pedestrian retrieval results. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we construct the first cross-camera pedestrian trajectory dataset, the Person Trajectory Dataset, in real surveillance scenarios. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Super resolution dual-layer CBCT imaging with model-guided deep learning

Objective: This study aims at investigating a novel super resolution CBCT imaging technique with the dual-layer flat panel detector (DL-FPD). Approach: In DL-FPD based CBCT imaging, the low-energy and high-energy projections acquired from the top and bottom detector layers contain intrinsically mismatched spatial information, from which super resolution CBCT images can be generated. To explain, a simple mathematical model is established according to the signal formation procedure in DL-FPD. Next, a dedicated recurrent neural network (RNN), named as suRi-Net, is designed by referring to the above imaging model to retrieve the high resolution dual-energy information. Different phantom experiments are conducted to validate the performance of this newly developed super resolution CBCT imaging method. Main Results: Results show that the proposed suRi-Net can retrieve high spatial resolution information accurately from the low-energy and high-energy projections having lower spatial resolution. Quantitatively, the spatial resolution of the reconstructed CBCT images of the top and bottom detector layers is increased by about 45% and 54%, respectively. Significance: In future, suRi-Net provides a new approach to achieve high spatial resolution dual-energy imaging in DL-FPD based CBCT systems.

A generic self-supervised learning (SSL) framework for representation learning from spectra-spatial feature of unlabeled remote sensing imagery

Remote sensing data has been widely used for various Earth Observation (EO) missions such as land use and cover classification, weather forecasting, agricultural management, and environmental monitoring. Most existing remote sensing data-based models are based on supervised learning that requires large and representative human-labelled data for model training, which is costly and time-consuming. Recently, self-supervised learning (SSL) enables the models to learn a representation from orders of magnitude more unlabelled data. This representation has been proven to boost the performance of downstream tasks and has potential for remote sensing applications. The success of SSL is heavily dependent on a pre-designed pretext task, which introduces an inductive bias into the model from a large amount of unlabelled data. Since remote sensing imagery has rich spectral information beyond the standard RGB colour space, the pretext tasks established in computer vision based on RGB images may not be straightforward to be extended to the multi/hyperspectral domain. To address this challenge, this work has designed a novel SSL framework that is capable of learning representation from both spectra-spatial information of unlabelled data. The framework contains two novel pretext tasks for object-based and pixel-based remote sensing data analysis methods, respectively. Through two typical downstream tasks evaluation (a multi-label land cover classification task on Sentienl-2 multispectral datasets and a ground soil parameter retrieval task on hyperspectral datasets), the results demonstrate that the representation obtained through the proposed SSL achieved a significant improvement in model performance.

SHISRCNet: Super-resolution And Classification Network For Low-resolution Breast Cancer Histopathology Image

The rapid identification and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer, known as the killer of women, have become greatly significant for those patients. Numerous breast cancer histopathological image classification methods have been proposed. But they still suffer from two problems. (1) These methods can only hand high-resolution (HR) images. However, the low-resolution (LR) images are often collected by the digital slide scanner with limited hardware conditions. Compared with HR images, LR images often lose some key features like texture, which deeply affects the accuracy of diagnosis. (2) The existing methods have fixed receptive fields, so they can not extract and fuse multi-scale features well for images with different magnification factors. To fill these gaps, we present a \textbf{S}ingle \textbf{H}istopathological \textbf{I}mage \textbf{S}uper-\textbf{R}esolution \textbf{C}lassification network (SHISRCNet), which consists of two modules: Super-Resolution (SR) and Classification (CF) modules. SR module reconstructs LR images into SR ones. CF module extracts and fuses the multi-scale features of SR images for classification. In the training stage, we introduce HR images into the CF module to enhance SHISRCNet's performance. Finally, through the joint training of these two modules, super-resolution and classified of LR images are integrated into our model. The experimental results demonstrate that the effects of our method are close to the SOTA methods with taking HR images as inputs.

High-dimensional Tensor Response Regression using the t-Distribution

In recent years, promising statistical modeling approaches to tensor data analysis have been rapidly developed. Traditional multivariate analysis tools, such as multivariate regression and discriminant analysis, are generalized from modeling random vectors and matrices to higher-order random tensors. One of the biggest challenges to statistical tensor models is the non-Gaussian nature of many real-world data. Unfortunately, existing approaches are either restricted to normality or implicitly using least squares type objective functions that are computationally efficient but sensitive to data contamination. Motivated by this, we adopt a simple tensor t-distribution that is, unlike the commonly used matrix t-distributions, compatible with tensor operators and reshaping of the data. We study the tensor response regression with tensor t-error, and develop penalized likelihood-based estimation and a novel one-step estimation. We study the asymptotic relative efficiency of various estimators and establish the one-step estimator's oracle properties and near-optimal asymptotic efficiency. We further propose a high-dimensional modification to the one-step estimation procedure and show that it attains the minimax optimal rate in estimation. Numerical studies show the excellent performance of the one-step estimator.

Attention Hybrid Variational Net for Accelerated MRI Reconstruction

The application of compressed sensing (CS)-enabled data reconstruction for accelerating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains a challenging problem. This is due to the fact that the information lost in k-space from the acceleration mask makes it difficult to reconstruct an image similar to the quality of a fully sampled image. Multiple deep learning-based structures have been proposed for MRI reconstruction using CS, both in the k-space and image domains as well as using unrolled optimization methods. However, the drawback of these structures is that they are not fully utilizing the information from both domains (k-space and image). Herein, we propose a deep learning-based attention hybrid variational network that performs learning in both the k-space and image domain. We evaluate our method on a well-known open-source MRI dataset and a clinical MRI dataset of patients diagnosed with strokes from our institution to demonstrate the performance of our network. In addition to quantitative evaluation, we undertook a blinded comparison of image quality across networks performed by a subspecialty trained radiologist. Overall, we demonstrate that our network achieves a superior performance among others under multiple reconstruction tasks.
