Genetic Algorithm based hyper-parameters optimization for transfer Convolutional Neural Network

Hyperparameter optimization is a challenging problem in developing deep neural networks. Decision of transfer layers and trainable layers is a major task for design of the transfer convolutional neural networks (CNN). Conventional transfer CNN models are usually manually designed based on intuition. In this paper, a genetic algorithm is applied to select trainable layers of the transfer model. The filter criterion is constructed by accuracy and the counts of the trainable layers. The results show that the method is competent in this task. The system will converge with a precision of 97% in the classification of Cats and Dogs datasets, in no more than 15 generations. Moreover, backward inference according the results of the genetic algorithm shows that our method can capture the gradient features in network layers, which plays a part on understanding of the transfer AI models.

Axion and dark photon limits from Crab Nebula high energy gamma-rays

The observation of cosmic sub-PeV gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula opens up the possibility of testing cosmic ray photon transparency at the multi-hundred TeV scale. Assuming no deviation from a source gamma-ray emission due to accelerated electron inverse-Compton scattering, higher event energies can extend constraints on the effects of new physics; We consider oscillation between gamma-rays and axions/dark photons, plus attenuation effects from gamma-ray absorption in the case of dark photon dark matter. Combining the recent AS$γ$ and HAWC sub-PeV data with earlier MAGIC and HEGRA data, axion-like particles are most constrained in the $10^{-7}-10^{-6}$ eV mass range, where the coupling $g_{aγ}$ is constrained to be below ${1.8}\times 10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$. In comparison, gamma ray flux attenuation due to oscillation with a dark photon leads to a very weak constraint on the mixing parameter; $ε\lesssim$ 0.2 for dark photon mass between $10^{-7}$ and $10^{-6}$ eV. Direct scattering from dark photon dark matter limits $ε\lesssim$ 0.01 for masses between $6$ and $400$ eV.

Multiple magnetic topological phases in bulk van der Waals crystal MnSb4Te7

The magnetic van der Waals crystals MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n have drawn significant attention due to their rich topological properties and the tunability by external magnetic field. Although the MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n family have been intensively studied in the past few years, their close relatives, the MnSb2Te4/(Sb2Te3)n family, remain much less explored. In this work, combining magnetotransport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first principles calculations, we find that MnSb4Te7, the n = 1 member of the MnSb2Te4/(Sb2Te3)n family, is a magnetic topological system with versatile topological phases which can be manipulated by both carrier doping and magnetic field. Our calculations unveil that its A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state stays in a Z_2 AFM topological insulator phase, which can be converted to an inversion-symmetry-protected axion insulator phase when in the ferromagnetic (FM) state. Moreover, when this system in the FM phase is slightly carrier doped on either the electron or hole side, it becomes a Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes in the highest valence bands and lowest conduction bands, which are manifested by the measured notable anomalous Hall effect. Our work thus introduces a new magnetic topological material with different topological phases which are highly tunable by carrier doping or magnetic field.

Equitable partition of planar graphs

An equitable $k$-partition of a graph $G$ is a collection of induced subgraphs $(G[V_1],G[V_2],\ldots,G[V_k])$ of $G$ such that $(V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_k)$ is a partition of $V(G)$ and $-1\le |V_i|-|V_j|\le 1$ for all $1\le i<j\le k$. We prove that every planar graph admits an equitable $2$-partition into $3$-degenerate graphs, an equitable $3$-partition into $2$-degenerate graphs, and an equitable $3$-partition into two forests and one graph.

Designing a Concentrated High-Efficiency Thermionic Solar Cell Enabled by Graphene Collector

We propose a concentrated thermionic emission solar cell design, which demonstrates a high solar-to-electricity energy conversion efficiency larger than 10\% under 600 sun, by harnessing the exceptional electrical, thermal and radiative properties of the graphene as a collector electrode. By constructing an analytical model that explicitly takes into account the non-Richardson behavior of the thermionic emission current from graphene, space charge effect in vacuum gap, and the various irreversible energy losses within the subcomponents, we perform a detailed characterization on the conversion efficiency limit and electrical power output characteristics of the proposed system. We systematically model and compare the energy conversion efficiency of various configurations of graphene-graphene and graphene-diamond and diamond-diamond thermionic emitter, and show that utilizing diamond films as an emitter and graphene as a collector offers the highest maximum efficiency, thus revealing the important role of graphene in achieving high-performance thermionic emission solar cell. A maximum efficiency of 12.8\% under 800 sun has been revealed, which is significantly higher than several existing solid-state solar cell designs, such as the solar-driven thermoelectric and thermophotovoltaic converters. Our work thus opens up new avenues to advance the efficiency limit of thermionic solar energy conversion and the development of next-generation novel-nanomaterial-based solar energy harvesting technology.

Dynamic list coloring of 1-planar graphs

A graph is $k$-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. Typically, the class of 1-planar graphs is among the most investigated graph families within the so-called "beyond planar graphs". A dynamic $\ell$-list coloring of a graph is a proper coloring so that each vertex receives a color from a list of $\ell$ distinct candidate colors assigned to it, and meanwhile, there are at least two colors appearing in the neighborhood of every vertex of degree at least two. In this paper, we prove that each 1-planar graph has a dynamic $11$-list coloring. Moreover, we show a relationship between the dynamic coloring of 1-planar graphs and the proper coloring of 2-planar graphs, which states that the dynamic (list) chromatic number of the class of 1-planar graphs is at least the (list) chromatic number of the class of 2-planar graphs.

The $L_p$-$L_q$ decay estimate for the multidimensional compressible flow with free surface in the exterior domain

The aim of this paper is to develop the general $L_p$ theory for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the free boundary condition in the exterior domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\geq 3$). By the spectral analysis, we obtain the classical $L_p$-$L_q$ decay estimate for the linearized model problem (with variable coefficients) in view of the partial Lagrangian transformation.

Designing 24-hour Electrical Power Generator: Thermoradiative Device for Harvesting Energy from Sun and Outer Space

Energy harvesting from sun and outer space using thermoradiative devices (TRD), despite being promising renewable energy sources, are limited only to daytime and nighttime period, respectively. A system with 24-hour continuous energy generation remains an open question thus far. Here, we propose a TRD-based power generator that harvests solar energy via concentrated solar irradiation during daytime and via thermal infrared emission towards the outer space at nighttime, thus achieving the much sought-after 24-hour electrical power generation. We develop a rigorous thermodynamical model to investigate the performance characteristics, parametric optimum design, and the role of various energy loss mechanisms. Our model predicts that the TRD-based system yields a peak efficiency of 12.6\% at daytime and a maximum power density of 10.8 Wm$^{-2}$ at nighttime, thus significantly outperforming the state-of-art record-setting thermoelectric generator. These findings reveal the potential of TRD towards 24-hour electricity generation and future renewable energy technology.

Observation of the Anomalous Hall Effect in a Collinear Antiferromagnet

Time-reversal symmetry breaking is the basic physics concept underpinning many magnetic topological phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and its quantized variant. The AHE has been primarily accompanied by a ferromagnetic dipole moment, which hinders the topological quantum states and limits data density in memory devices, or by a delicate noncollinear magnetic order with strong spin decoherence, both limiting their applicability. A potential breakthrough is the recent theoretical prediction of the AHE arising from collinear antiferromagnetism in an anisotropic crystal environment. This new mechanism does not require magnetic dipolar or noncollinear fields. However, it has not been experimentally observed to date. Here we demonstrate this unconventional mechanism by measuring the AHE in an epilayer of a rutile collinear antiferromagnet RuO$_2$. The observed anomalous Hall conductivity is large, exceeding 300 S/cm, and is in agreement with the Berry phase topological transport contribution. Our results open a new unexplored chapter of time-reversal symmetry breaking phenomena in the abundant class of collinear antiferromagnetic materials.

Spectroscopic and Photometric Redshift Estimation by Neural Networks For the China Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS)

The estimation of spectroscopic and photometric redshifts (spec-z and photo-z) is crucial for future cosmological surveys. It can directly affect several powerful measurements of the Universe, e.g. weak lensing and galaxy clustering. In this work, we explore the accuracies of spec-z and photo-z that can be obtained in the China Space Station Optical Surveys (CSS-OS), which is a next-generation space survey, using neural networks. The 1-dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1-d CNN) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP, one of the simplest forms of Artificial Neural Network) are employed to derive the spec-z and photo-z, respectively. The mock spectral and photometric data used for training and testing the networks are generated based on the COSMOS catalog. The networks have been trained with noisy data by creating Gaussian random realizations to reduce the statistical effects, resulting in similar redshift accuracy for both high-SNR (signal to noise ratio) and low-SNR data. The probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the predicted redshifts are also derived via Gaussian random realizations of the testing data, and then the best-fit redshifts and 1-sigma errors also can be obtained. We find that our networks can provide excellent redshift estimates with accuracies ~0.001 and 0.01 on spec-z and photo-z, respectively. Compared to existing photo-z codes, our MLP has similar accuracy but is more efficient in the training process. The fractions of catastrophic redshifts or outliers can be dramatically suppressed comparing to the ordinary template-fitting method. This indicates that the neural network method is feasible and powerful for spec-z and photo-z estimations in future cosmological surveys.

A two-dimensional electron gas based on a 5s oxide with high room-temperature mobility and strain sensitivity

The coupling of optical and electronic degrees of freedom together with quantum confinement in low-dimensional electron systems is particularly interesting for achieving exotic functionalities in strongly correlated oxide electronics. Recently, high room-temperature mobility has been achieved for a large bandgap transparent oxide - BaSnO$_3$ upon extrinsic La or Sb doping, which has excited significant research attention. In this work, we report the observation of room-temperature ferromagnetism in BaSnO$_3$ thin films and the realization of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) on the surface of transparent BaSnO$_3$ via oxygen vacancy creation, which exhibits a high carrier density of $\sim 7.72*10^{14} /{\rm cm}^2$ and a high room-temperature mobility of ~18 cm$^2$/V/s. Such a 2DEG is rather sensitive to strain and a less than 0.1% in-plane biaxial compressive strain leads to a giant resistance enhancement of 350% (more than 540 kOhm/Square) at room temperature. Thus, this work creates a new path to exploring the physics of low-dimensional oxide electronics and devices applicable at room temperature.

Super strong paramagnetism of aromatic peptides adsorbed with monovalent cations

We experimentally demonstrated that the AYFFF self-assemblies adsorbed with various monovalent cations (Na+, K+, and Li+) show unexpectedly super strong paramagnetism. The key to the super strong paramagnetism lies in the hydrated cation-π interactions between the monovalent cations and the aromatic rings in the AYFFF assemblies, which endows the AYFFF-cations complex with magnetic moments.

Unexpectedly super strong paramagnetism of aromatic peptides due to cations of divalent metals

The magnetism of most biological systems has not been characterized, which directly impedes our understanding of many magnetic field-related phenomena, including magnetoreception and magnetic bio-effects. Here we measured the magnetic susceptibility of aromatic peptide AYFFF self-assemblies in the presence or absence of divalent metal cations in liquid phase at room temperature. Unexpectedly, the magnetic susceptibilities of AYFFF self-assemblies in the chloride solution of various divalent cations (Mg2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+) show super strong paramagnetism. We attribute the super strong paramagnetism to existence of the magnetic moments on the cations adsorbed on aromatic rings in the AYFFF assemblies through hydrated cation-π interactions, where the adsorbed cations display non-divalent behavior with unpaired electron spins. Our results indicate the super strong paramagnetism or potential ferromagnetism in the aromatic ring-enriched biomolecules when there are enough cations of divalent metals adsorbed. The findings not only provide fundamental information for understanding the magnetism of biological systems, provoke insights for investigating the origin of magnetoreception and bio-effects of magnetic fields, but also help developing future magnetic-control techniques on aromatic ring-enriched biomolecules and drugs in living organisms, as well as biomaterial fabrication and manipulation.

Designing Few-layer Graphene Schottky Contact Solar Cell: Theoretical Efficiency Limits and Parametric Optimization

We theoretically study the efficiency limits and performance characteristics of few-layer graphene-semiconductor solar cells (FGSCs) based on a Schottky contact device structure. We model and compare the energy conversion efficiency of various configurations by explicitly considering the non-Richardson thermionic emission across few-layer graphene/semiconductor Schottky heterostructures. The calculations reveal that ABA-stacked trilayer graphene-silicon solar cell exhibits a maximal conversion efficiency exceeding 28\% due to a lower reversed saturation current when compared to that of the ABC-stacking configuration. The thermal coefficients of PCE for ABA and ABC stacking FGSCs are -0.064\%/K and -0.049\%/K, respectively. Our work offers insights for optimal designs of graphene-based solar cells, thus paving a route towards the design of high-performance FGSC for future nanoscale energy converters.

Simulating Pitch Angle Scattering Using An Explicitly Solvable Energy Conserving Algorithm

Particle distribution functions evolving under the Lorentz operator can be simulated with the Langevin equation for pitch angle scattering. This approach is frequently used in particle based Monte-Carlo simulations of plasma collisions, among others. However, most numerical treatments do not guarantee energy conservation, which may lead to unphysical artifacts such as numerical heating and spectra distortions. We present a novel structure-preserving numerical algorithm for the Langevin equation for pitch angle scattering. Similar to the well-known Boris algorithm, the proposed numerical scheme takes advantage of the structure-preserving properties of the Cayley transform when calculating the velocity-space rotations. The resulting algorithm is explicitly solvable, while preserving the norm of velocities down to machine precision. We demonstrate that the method has the same order of numerical convergence as the traditional stochastic Euler-Maruyama method. The numerical scheme is benchmarked by simulating the pitch angle scattering of a particle beam, and comparing with the analytical solution. Benchmark results show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions, showcasing the remarkable long time accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

$f$-GAIL: Learning $f$-Divergence for Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning

Imitation learning (IL) aims to learn a policy from expert demonstrations that minimizes the discrepancy between the learner and expert behaviors. Various imitation learning algorithms have been proposed with different pre-determined divergences to quantify the discrepancy. This naturally gives rise to the following question: Given a set of expert demonstrations, which divergence can recover the expert policy more accurately with higher data efficiency? In this work, we propose $f$-GAIL, a new generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) model, that automatically learns a discrepancy measure from the $f$-divergence family as well as a policy capable of producing expert-like behaviors. Compared with IL baselines with various predefined divergence measures, $f$-GAIL learns better policies with higher data efficiency in six physics-based control tasks.

A preliminary forecast for cosmological parameter estimation with gravitational-wave standard sirens from TianQin

TianQin is a space-based gravitational-wave observatory scheduled to be launched in the 2030s. In this work, we make a preliminary forecast for the cosmological parameter estimation with the gravitational-wave standard siren observation from TianQin. We simulate the standard siren data of TianQin based on its 5-year observation after the completion of construction. In the simulation, three models for the population of massive black hole binary (MBHB), i.e., pop III, Q3nod, and Q3d, are considered to predict the event numbers of MBHB mergers. We find that: (i) among the three MBHB models, the Q3nod model can provide the tightest constraints on the cosmological parameters; (ii) TianQin's standard siren observation can effectively break the parameter degeneracies inherent in the cosmic microwave background observation; and (iii) the future standard siren observation from TianQin can significantly improve the cosmological parameter estimation under the current mainstream electromagnetic observations.

Cosmological parameter estimation for dynamical dark energy models with future fast radio burst observations

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a mysterious astrophysical phenomenon of bright pulses emitted at radio frequencies, and they are expected to be frequently detected in the future. The dispersion measures of FRBs are related to cosmological parameters, thus FRBs have the potential to be developed into a new cosmological probe if their data can be largely accumulated in the future. In this work, we study the capability of future FRB data to improve cosmological parameter estimation in two dynamical dark energy models. We find that the simulated FRB data can break the parameter degeneracies inherent in the current cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Therefore, the combination of the CMB and FRB data can significantly improve the constraints on the Hubble constant and dark energy parameters, compared to those using CMB or FRB alone. If 10,000 FRB events with known redshifts are detected in the future, they would perform better than the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data in breaking the parameter degeneracies inherent in the CMB data. We also find that the combination of FRB and gravitational-wave (GW) standard siren data provides an independent low-redshift probe to verify the results from the CMB and BAO data. For the data combination of CMB, GW, and FRB, it is found that the main contribution to the constraints comes from the CMB and GW data, but the inclusion of the FRB data still can evidently improve the constraint on the baryon density.
