Tracing the Roots of Facts in Multilingual Language Models: Independent, Shared, and Transferred Knowledge

Acquiring factual knowledge for language models (LMs) in low-resource languages poses a serious challenge, thus resorting to cross-lingual transfer in multilingual LMs (ML-LMs). In this study, we ask how ML-LMs acquire and represent factual knowledge. Using the multilingual factual knowledge probing dataset, mLAMA, we first conducted a neuron investigation of ML-LMs (specifically, multilingual BERT). We then traced the roots of facts back to the knowledge source (Wikipedia) to identify the ways in which ML-LMs acquire specific facts. We finally identified three patterns of acquiring and representing facts in ML-LMs: language-independent, cross-lingual shared and transferred, and devised methods for differentiating them. Our findings highlight the challenge of maintaining consistent factual knowledge across languages, underscoring the need for better fact representation learning in ML-LMs.

IRConStyle: Image Restoration Framework Using Contrastive Learning and Style Transfer

Recently, the contrastive learning paradigm has achieved remarkable success in high-level tasks such as classification, detection, and segmentation. However, contrastive learning applied in low-level tasks, like image restoration, is limited, and its effectiveness is uncertain. This raises a question: Why does the contrastive learning paradigm not yield satisfactory results in image restoration? In this paper, we conduct in-depth analyses and propose three guidelines to address the above question. In addition, inspired by style transfer and based on contrastive learning, we propose a novel module for image restoration called \textbf{ConStyle}, which can be efficiently integrated into any U-Net structure network. By leveraging the flexibility of ConStyle, we develop a \textbf{general restoration network} for image restoration. ConStyle and the general restoration network together form an image restoration framework, namely \textbf{IRConStyle}. To demonstrate the capability and compatibility of ConStyle, we replace the general restoration network with transformer-based, CNN-based, and MLP-based networks, respectively. We perform extensive experiments on various image restoration tasks, including denoising, deblurring, deraining, and dehazing. The results on 19 benchmarks demonstrate that ConStyle can be integrated with any U-Net-based network and significantly enhance performance. For instance, ConStyle NAFNet significantly outperforms the original NAFNet on SOTS outdoor (dehazing) and Rain100H (deraining) datasets, with PSNR improvements of 4.16 dB and 3.58 dB with 85% fewer parameters.

Adaptive Online Learning of Separable Path Graph Transforms for Intra-prediction

Current video coding standards, including H.264/AVC, HEVC, and VVC, employ discrete cosine transform (DCT), discrete sine transform (DST), and secondary to Karhunen-Loeve transforms (KLTs) decorrelate the intra-prediction residuals. However, the efficiency of these transforms in decorrelation can be limited when the signal has a non-smooth and non-periodic structure, such as those occurring in textures with intricate patterns. This paper introduces a novel adaptive separable path graph-based transform (GBT) that can provide better decorrelation than the DCT for intra-predicted texture data. The proposed GBT is learned in an online scenario with sequential K-means clustering, which groups similar blocks during encoding and decoding to adaptively learn the GBT for the current block from previously reconstructed areas with similar characteristics. A signaling overhead is added to the bitstream of each coding block to indicate the usage of the proposed graph-based transform. We assess the performance of this method combined with H.264/AVC intra-coding tools and demonstrate that it can significantly outperform H.264/AVC DCT for intra-predicted texture data.

BioDrone: A Bionic Drone-based Single Object Tracking Benchmark for Robust Vision

Single object tracking (SOT) is a fundamental problem in computer vision, with a wide range of applications, including autonomous driving, augmented reality, and robot navigation. The robustness of SOT faces two main challenges: tiny target and fast motion. These challenges are especially manifested in videos captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), where the target is usually far away from the camera and often with significant motion relative to the camera. To evaluate the robustness of SOT methods, we propose BioDrone -- the first bionic drone-based visual benchmark for SOT. Unlike existing UAV datasets, BioDrone features videos captured from a flapping-wing UAV system with a major camera shake due to its aerodynamics. BioDrone hence highlights the tracking of tiny targets with drastic changes between consecutive frames, providing a new robust vision benchmark for SOT. To date, BioDrone offers the largest UAV-based SOT benchmark with high-quality fine-grained manual annotations and automatically generates frame-level labels, designed for robust vision analyses. Leveraging our proposed BioDrone, we conduct a systematic evaluation of existing SOT methods, comparing the performance of 20 representative models and studying novel means of optimizing a SOTA method (KeepTrack KeepTrack) for robust SOT. Our evaluation leads to new baselines and insights for robust SOT. Moving forward, we hope that BioDrone will not only serve as a high-quality benchmark for robust SOT, but also invite future research into robust computer vision. The database, toolkits, evaluation server, and baseline results are available at http://biodrone.aitestunion.com.

Pedal and contrapedal curves of mixed-type Minkowski plane curves

Pedal and contrapedal curves are important study objects of plane curves. As for a mixed-type Minkowski plane curve, since the definitions of the pedal and contrapedal curves at lightlike points can not always be given, the investigation of them is difficult. We have done some research on the pedal curves of a mixed-type curve. In this paper, we discuss when the contrapedal curves of a mixed-type curve exist and give the definition of them when they exist. Then, we study when the contrapedal curves of the mixed-type curve have singular points. Meanwhile, we consider the types of the points on the contrapedal curves. Moreover, we investigate the relationship between the pedal and contrapedal curves of a mixed-type curve, as well as the relationship among them and the evolute of the base curve.

Robust single-particle cryo-EM image denoising and restoration

Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has achieved near-atomic level resolution of biomolecules by reconstructing 2D micrographs. However, the resolution and accuracy of the reconstructed particles are significantly reduced due to the extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and complex noise structure of cryo-EM images. In this paper, we introduce a diffusion model with post-processing framework to effectively denoise and restore single particle cryo-EM images. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) denoising methods by effectively removing structural noise that has not been addressed before. Additionally, more accurate and high-resolution three-dimensional reconstruction structures can be obtained from denoised cryo-EM images.

UFIN: Universal Feature Interaction Network for Multi-Domain Click-Through Rate Prediction

Click-Through Rate (CTR) prediction, which aims to estimate the probability of a user clicking on an item, is a key task in online advertising. Numerous existing CTR models concentrate on modeling the feature interactions within a solitary domain, thereby rendering them inadequate for fulfilling the requisites of multi-domain recommendations in real industrial scenarios. Some recent approaches propose intricate architectures to enhance knowledge sharing and augment model training across multiple domains. However, these approaches encounter difficulties when being transferred to new recommendation domains, owing to their reliance on the modeling of ID features (e.g., item id). To address the above issue, we propose the Universal Feature Interaction Network (UFIN) approach for CTR prediction. UFIN exploits textual data to learn universal feature interactions that can be effectively transferred across diverse domains. For learning universal feature representations, we regard the text and feature as two different modalities and propose an encoder-decoder network founded on a Large Language Model (LLM) to enforce the transfer of data from the text modality to the feature modality. Building upon the above foundation, we further develop a mixtureof-experts (MoE) enhanced adaptive feature interaction model to learn transferable collaborative patterns across multiple domains. Furthermore, we propose a multi-domain knowledge distillation framework to enhance feature interaction learning. Based on the above methods, UFIN can effectively bridge the semantic gap to learn common knowledge across various domains, surpassing the constraints of ID-based models. Extensive experiments conducted on eight datasets show the effectiveness of UFIN, in both multidomain and cross-platform settings. Our code is available at https://github.com/RUCAIBox/UFIN.

Efficient-VQGAN: Towards High-Resolution Image Generation with Efficient Vision Transformers

Vector-quantized image modeling has shown great potential in synthesizing high-quality images. However, generating high-resolution images remains a challenging task due to the quadratic computational overhead of the self-attention process. In this study, we seek to explore a more efficient two-stage framework for high-resolution image generation with improvements in the following three aspects. (1) Based on the observation that the first quantization stage has solid local property, we employ a local attention-based quantization model instead of the global attention mechanism used in previous methods, leading to better efficiency and reconstruction quality. (2) We emphasize the importance of multi-grained feature interaction during image generation and introduce an efficient attention mechanism that combines global attention (long-range semantic consistency within the whole image) and local attention (fined-grained details). This approach results in faster generation speed, higher generation fidelity, and improved resolution. (3) We propose a new generation pipeline incorporating autoencoding training and autoregressive generation strategy, demonstrating a better paradigm for image synthesis. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our approach in high-quality and high-resolution image reconstruction and generation.

STS-GAN: Can We Synthesize Solid Texture with High Fidelity from Arbitrary 2D Exemplar?

Solid texture synthesis (STS), an effective way to extend a 2D exemplar to a 3D solid volume, exhibits advantages in computational photography. However, existing methods generally fail to accurately learn arbitrary textures, which may result in the failure to synthesize solid textures with high fidelity. In this paper, we propose a novel generative adversarial nets-based framework (STS-GAN) to extend the given 2D exemplar to arbitrary 3D solid textures. In STS-GAN, multi-scale 2D texture discriminators evaluate the similarity between the given 2D exemplar and slices from the generated 3D texture, promoting the 3D texture generator synthesizing realistic solid textures. Finally, experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can generate high-fidelity solid textures with similar visual characteristics to the 2D exemplar.

Dual-Functional MIMO Beamforming Optimization for RIS-Aided Integrated Sensing and Communication

Aiming at providing wireless communication systems with environment-perceptive capacity, emerging integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technologies face multiple difficulties, especially in balancing the performance trade-off between the communication and radar functions. In this paper, we introduce a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to assist both data transmission and target detection in a dual-functional ISAC system. To formulate a general optimization framework, diverse communication performance metrics have been taken into account including famous capacity maximization and mean-squared error (MSE) minimization. Whereas the target detection process is modeled as a general likelihood ratio test (GLRT) due to the practical limitations, and the monotonicity of the corresponding detection probability is proved. For the single-user and single-target (SUST) scenario, the minimum transmit power of the ISAC transceiver has been revealed. By exploiting the optimal conditions of the BS design, we validate that the BS is able to realize the maximum power allocation scheme and derive the optimal BS precoder in a semi-closed form. Moreover, an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) based RIS design is proposed to address the optimization of unit-modulus RIS phase shifts. For the sake of further enhancing computational efficiency, we also develop a low-complexity RIS design based on Riemannian gradient descent. Furthermore, the ISAC transceiver design for the multiple-users and multiple-targets (MUMT) scenario is also investigated, where a zero-forcing (ZF) radar receiver is adopted to cancel the interferences. Then optimal BS precoder is derived under the maximum power allocation scheme, and the RIS phase shifts can be optimized by extending the proposed ADMM-based RIS design. Numerical simulation results verify the performance of our proposed transceiver designs.

Open Set Relation Extraction via Unknown-Aware Training

The existing supervised relation extraction methods have achieved impressive performance in a closed-set setting, where the relations during both training and testing remain the same. In a more realistic open-set setting, unknown relations may appear in the test set. Due to the lack of supervision signals from unknown relations, a well-performing closed-set relation extractor can still confidently misclassify them into known relations. In this paper, we propose an unknown-aware training method, regularizing the model by dynamically synthesizing negative instances. To facilitate a compact decision boundary, ``difficult'' negative instances are necessary. Inspired by text adversarial attacks, we adaptively apply small but critical perturbations to original training instances and thus synthesizing negative instances that are more likely to be mistaken by the model as known relations. Experimental results show that this method achieves SOTA unknown relation detection without compromising the classification of known relations.

RE-Matching: A Fine-Grained Semantic Matching Method for Zero-Shot Relation Extraction

Semantic matching is a mainstream paradigm of zero-shot relation extraction, which matches a given input with a corresponding label description. The entities in the input should exactly match their hypernyms in the description, while the irrelevant contexts should be ignored when matching. However, general matching methods lack explicit modeling of the above matching pattern. In this work, we propose a fine-grained semantic matching method tailored for zero-shot relation extraction. Following the above matching pattern, we decompose the sentence-level similarity score into entity and context matching scores. Due to the lack of explicit annotations of the redundant components, we design a feature distillation module to adaptively identify the relation-irrelevant features and reduce their negative impact on context matching. Experimental results show that our method achieves higher matching $F_1$ score and has an inference speed 10 times faster, when compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

Hierarchical Knowledge Guided Learning for Real-world Retinal Diseases Recognition

In the real world, medical datasets often exhibit a long-tailed data distribution (i.e., a few classes occupy the majority of the data, while most classes have only a limited number of samples), which results in a challenging long-tailed learning scenario. Some recently published datasets in ophthalmology AI consist of more than 40 kinds of retinal diseases with complex abnormalities and variable morbidity. Nevertheless, more than 30 conditions are rarely seen in global patient cohorts. From a modeling perspective, most deep learning models trained on these datasets may lack the ability to generalize to rare diseases where only a few available samples are presented for training. In addition, there may be more than one disease for the presence of the retina, resulting in a challenging label co-occurrence scenario, also known as \textit{multi-label}, which can cause problems when some re-sampling strategies are applied during training. To address the above two major challenges, this paper presents a novel method that enables the deep neural network to learn from a long-tailed fundus database for various retinal disease recognition. Firstly, we exploit the prior knowledge in ophthalmology to improve the feature representation using a hierarchy-aware pre-training. Secondly, we adopt an instance-wise class-balanced sampling strategy to address the label co-occurrence issue under the long-tailed medical dataset scenario. Thirdly, we introduce a novel hybrid knowledge distillation to train a less biased representation and classifier. We conducted extensive experiments on four databases, including two public datasets and two in-house databases with more than one million fundus images. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed methods with recognition accuracy outperforming the state-of-the-art competitors, especially for these rare diseases.

The twisted group algebra structure of the Cayley-Dickson algebra

The Cayley-Dickson algebra has long been a challenge due to the lack of an explicit multiplication table. Despite being constructible through inductive construction, its explicit structure has remained elusive until now. In this article, we propose a solution to this long-standing problem by revealing the Cayley-Dickson algebra as a twisted group algebra with an explicit twist function $σ(A,B)$. We show that this function satisfies the equation $$e_Ae_B=(-1)^{σ(A,B)}e_{A\oplus B}$$ and provide a formula for the relationship between the Cayley-Dickson algebra and split Cayley-Dickson algebra, thereby giving an explicit expression for the twist function of the split Cayley-Dickson algebra. Our approach not only resolves the lack of explicit structure for the Cayley-Dickson algebra and split Cayley-Dickson algebra but also sheds light on the algebraic structure underlying this fundamental mathematical object.

SOTVerse: A User-defined Task Space of Single Object Tracking

Single object tracking (SOT) research falls into a cycle -- trackers perform well on most benchmarks but quickly fail in challenging scenarios, causing researchers to doubt the insufficient data content and take more effort to construct larger datasets with more challenging situations. However, inefficient data utilization and limited evaluation methods more seriously hinder SOT research. The former causes existing datasets can not be exploited comprehensively, while the latter neglects challenging factors in the evaluation process. In this article, we systematize the representative benchmarks and form a Single Object Tracking metaverse (SOTVerse) -- a user-defined SOT task space to break through the bottleneck. We first propose a 3E Paradigm to describe tasks by three components (i.e., environment, evaluation, and executor). Then, we summarize task characteristics, clarify the organization standards, and construct SOTVerse with 12.56 million frames. Specifically, SOTVerse automatically labels challenging factors per frame, allowing users to generate user-defined spaces efficiently via construction rules. Besides, SOTVerse provides two mechanisms with new indicators and successfully evaluates trackers under various subtasks. Consequently, SOTVerse first provides a strategy to improve resource utilization in the computer vision area, making research more standardized and scientific. The SOTVerse, toolkit, evaluation server, and results are available at http://metaverse.aitestunion.com.

Simulation of environmental impacts on the synthesis of carbyne with more than 6000 atoms for emerging continuously tunable energy barriers in CNT-based transistors

Transistors made up of carbon nanotubes CNT have demonstrated excellent current-voltage characteristics which outperform some high-grade silicon-based transistors. A continuously tunable energy barrier across semiconductor interfaces is desired to make the CNT-based transistors more robust. Despite the direct band gap of carbyne inside a CNT can be widely tuned by strain, the size of carbyne cannot be controlled easily. The production of a monoatomic chain with more than 6000 carbon atoms is an enormous technological challenge. To predict the optimal chain length of a carbyne in different molecular environments, we have developed a Monte Carlo model in which a finite-length carbyne with a size of 4000-15000 atoms is encapsulated by a CNT at finite temperatures. Our simulation shows that the stability of the carbyne@nanotube is strongly influenced by the nature and porosity of the CNT, the external pressure, the temperature and the chain length. We have observed an initiation of chain-breaking process in a compressed carbyne@nanotube. Our work provides much needed input for optimising the carbyne length to produce carbon chains much longer than 6000 atoms at ~300K. Design rules are proposed for synthesizing ~1% strained carbyne@(6,5)CNT as a component in CNT-based transistors to tune the energy barriers continuously.

InsPro: Propagating Instance Query and Proposal for Online Video Instance Segmentation

Video instance segmentation (VIS) aims at segmenting and tracking objects in videos. Prior methods typically generate frame-level or clip-level object instances first and then associate them by either additional tracking heads or complex instance matching algorithms. This explicit instance association approach increases system complexity and fails to fully exploit temporal cues in videos. In this paper, we design a simple, fast and yet effective query-based framework for online VIS. Relying on an instance query and proposal propagation mechanism with several specially developed components, this framework can perform accurate instance association implicitly. Specifically, we generate frame-level object instances based on a set of instance query-proposal pairs propagated from previous frames. This instance query-proposal pair is learned to bind with one specific object across frames through conscientiously developed strategies. When using such a pair to predict an object instance on the current frame, not only the generated instance is automatically associated with its precursors on previous frames, but the model gets a good prior for predicting the same object. In this way, we naturally achieve implicit instance association in parallel with segmentation and elegantly take advantage of temporal clues in videos. To show the effectiveness of our method InsPro, we evaluate it on two popular VIS benchmarks, i.e., YouTube-VIS 2019 and YouTube-VIS 2021. Without bells-and-whistles, our InsPro with ResNet-50 backbone achieves 43.2 AP and 37.6 AP on these two benchmarks respectively, outperforming all other online VIS methods.

3D Matting: A Benchmark Study on Soft Segmentation Method for Pulmonary Nodules Applied in Computed Tomography

Usually, lesions are not isolated but are associated with the surrounding tissues. For example, the growth of a tumour can depend on or infiltrate into the surrounding tissues. Due to the pathological nature of the lesions, it is challenging to distinguish their boundaries in medical imaging. However, these uncertain regions may contain diagnostic information. Therefore, the simple binarization of lesions by traditional binary segmentation can result in the loss of diagnostic information. In this work, we introduce the image matting into the 3D scenes and use the alpha matte, i.e., a soft mask, to describe lesions in a 3D medical image. The traditional soft mask acted as a training trick to compensate for the easily mislabelled or under-labelled ambiguous regions. In contrast, 3D matting uses soft segmentation to characterize the uncertain regions more finely, which means that it retains more structural information for subsequent diagnosis and treatment. The current study of image matting methods in 3D is limited. To address this issue, we conduct a comprehensive study of 3D matting, including both traditional and deep-learning-based methods. We adapt four state-of-the-art 2D image matting algorithms to 3D scenes and further customize the methods for CT images to calibrate the alpha matte with the radiodensity. Moreover, we propose the first end-to-end deep 3D matting network and implement a solid 3D medical image matting benchmark. Its efficient counterparts are also proposed to achieve a good performance-computation balance. Furthermore, there is no high-quality annotated dataset related to 3D matting, slowing down the development of data-driven deep-learning-based methods. To address this issue, we construct the first 3D medical matting dataset. The validity of the dataset was verified through clinicians' assessments and downstream experiments.
