Self-formed 2D/3D Heterostructure on the Edge of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Hybrid Perovskites Responsible for Intriguing Optoelectronic Properties and Higher Cell Efficiency

The observation of low energy edge photoluminescence and its beneficial effect on the solar cell efficiency of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites has unleashed an intensive research effort to reveal its origin. This effort, however, has been met with more challenges as the underlying material structure has still not been identified; new modellings and observations also do not seem to converge. Using 2D (BA)2(MA)2Pb3Br10 as an example, we show that 3D MAPbBr3 is formed due to the loss of BA on the edge. This self-formed MAPbBr3 can explain the reported edge emission under various conditions, while the reported intriguing optoelectronic properties such as fast exciton trapping from the interior 2D perovskite, rapid exciton dissociation and long carrier lifetime can be understood via the self-formed 2D/3D lateral perovskite heterostructure. The 3D perovskite is identified by submicron infrared spectroscopy, the emergence of XRD signature from freezer-milled nanometer-sized 2D perovskite and its photoluminescence response to external hydrostatic pressure. The revelation of this edge emission mystery and the identification of a self-formed 2D/3D heterostructure provide a new approach to engineering 2D perovskites for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Automatic Image Pixel Clustering based on Mussels Wandering Optimiz

Image segmentation as a clustering problem is to identify pixel groups on an image without any preliminary labels available. It remains a challenge in machine vision because of the variations in size and shape of image segments. Furthermore, determining the segment number in an image is NP-hard without prior knowledge of the image content. This paper presents an automatic color image pixel clustering scheme based on mussels wandering optimization. By applying an activation variable to determine the number of clusters along with the cluster centers optimization, an image is segmented with minimal prior knowledge and human intervention. By revising the within- and between-class sum of squares ratio for random natural image contents, we provide a novel fitness function for image pixel clustering tasks. Comprehensive empirical studies of the proposed scheme against other state-of-the-art competitors on synthetic data and the ASD dataset have demonstrated the promising performance of the proposed scheme.

Deep Morphological Neural Networks

Mathematical morphology is a theory and technique to collect features like geometric and topological structures in digital images. Given a target image, determining suitable morphological operations and structuring elements is a cumbersome and time-consuming task. In this paper, a morphological neural network is proposed to address this problem. Serving as a nonlinear feature extracting layer in deep learning frameworks, the efficiency of the proposed morphological layer is confirmed analytically and empirically. With a known target, a single-filter morphological layer learns the structuring element correctly, and an adaptive layer can automatically select appropriate morphological operations. For practical applications, the proposed morphological neural networks are tested on several classification datasets related to shape or geometric image features, and the experimental results have confirmed the high computational efficiency and high accuracy.

A Robust Image Watermarking System Based on Deep Neural Networks

Digital image watermarking is the process of embedding and extracting watermark covertly on a carrier image. Incorporating deep learning networks with image watermarking has attracted increasing attention during recent years. However, existing deep learning-based watermarking systems cannot achieve robustness, blindness, and automated embedding and extraction simultaneously. In this paper, a fully automated image watermarking system based on deep neural networks is proposed to generalize the image watermarking processes. An unsupervised deep learning structure and a novel loss computation are proposed to achieve high capacity and high robustness without any prior knowledge of possible attacks. Furthermore, a challenging application of watermark extraction from camera-captured images is provided to validate the practicality as well as the robustness of the proposed system. Experimental results show the superiority performance of the proposed system as comparing against several currently available techniques.

Global existence of weak solutions to the compressible quantum Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity

We study the compressible quantum Navier-Stokes (QNS) equations with degenerate viscosity in the three dimensional periodic domains. On the one hand, we consider QNS with additional damping terms. Motivated by the recent works [Li-Xin, arXiv:1504.06826] and [Antonelli-Spirito, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 203(2012), 499--527], we construct a suitable approximate system which has smooth solutions satisfying the energy inequality and the BD entropy estimate. Using this system, we obtain the global existence of weak solutions to the compressible QNS equations with damping terms for large initial data. Moreover, we obtain some new a priori estimates, which can avoid using the assumption that the gradient of the velocity is a well-defined function, which is indeed used directly in [Vasseur-Yu, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 48 (2016), 1489--1511; Invent. Math., 206 (2016), 935--974]. On the other hand, in the absence of damping terms, we also prove the global existence of weak solutions to the compressible QNS equations without the lower bound assumption on the dispersive coefficient, which improves the previous result due to [Antonelli-Spirito, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 203(2012), 499--527].

Singularity formation to the two-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with zero heat conduction in a bounded domain

We consider the singularity formation of strong solutions to the two-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with zero heat conduction in a bounded domain. It is shown that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the density and the pressure are bounded from above. Critical Sobolev inequalities of logarithmic type play a crucial role in the proof.

Singularity formation to the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional non-baratropic magnetohydrodynamic equations without heat conductivity

We study the singularity formation of strong solutions to the two-dimensional (2D) Cauchy problem of the non-baratropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations without heat conductivity. It is proved that the strong solution exists globally if the density and the pressure are bounded from above. In particular, the criterion is independent of the magnetic field and is just the same as that of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our method relies on weighted energy estimates and a Hardy-type inequality.

Strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional non-baratropic non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conduction

This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of the non-baratropic non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with zero heat conduction on the whole two-dimensional (2D) space with vacuum as far field density. By delicate weighted energy estimates, we prove that there exists a local strong solution provided the initial density and the initial magnetic decay not too slow at infinity.

On formation of singularity of the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conduction

We are concerned with the formation of singularity and breakdown of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conduction. It is proved that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the deformation tensor $\mathfrak{D}(\mathbf{u})$ and the pressure $P$ satisfy $\|\mathfrak{D}(\mathbf{u})\|_{L^{1}(0,T;L^\infty)}+\|P\|_{L^{\infty}(0,T;L^\infty)}<\infty$. In particular, the criterion is independent of the magnetic field. The logarithm-type estimate for the Lam{é} system and some delicate energy estimates play a crucial role in the proof.

Global strong solution to the two-dimensional density-dependent nematic liquid crystal flows with vacuum

We are concerned with the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional (2D) nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with vacuum as far field density. It is proved that the 2D nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows admits a unique global strong solution provided the initial data density and the gradient of orientation decay not too slow at infinity, and the basic energy $\|\sqrt{ρ_0}\mathbf{u}_0\|_{L^2}^2+\|\nabla\mathbf{d}_0\|_{L^2}^2$ is small. In particular, the initial density may contain vacuum states and even have compact support. Moreover, the large time behavior of the solution is also obtained.

Global Strong Solution for 3D Viscous Incompressible Heat Conducting Navier-Stokes Flows with Non-negative Density

We are concerned with an initial boundary value problem for the nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows with non-negative density. First of all, we show that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Then, under some smallness condition, we prove that there is a unique global strong solution to the 3D viscous nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows. Our method relies upon the delicate energy estimates and regularity properties of Stokes system and elliptic equation.

In particular, the initial data can be arbitrarily large and the initial density may contain vacuum states and even have compact support. As a byproduct, the large time behavior of the solution is also obtained.

Phase Diagram and High-Temperature Superconductivity of Compressed Selenium Hydrides

Recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (Tc = 190 K) in sulfur hydrides at megabar pressures breaks the traditional belief on the Tc limit of 40 K for conventional superconductors, and open up the doors in searching new high-temperature superconductors in compounds made up of light elements. Selenium is a sister and isoelectronic element of sulfur, with a larger atomic core and a weaker electronegativity. Whether selenium hydrides share similar high-temperature superconductivity remains elusive, but it is a subject of considerable interest. First-principles swarm structure predictions are performed in an effort to seek for energetically stable and metallic selenium hydrides at high pressures. We find the phase diagram of selenium hydrides is rather different from its sulfur analogy, which is indicates by the emergence of new phases and the change of relative stabilities. Three stable and metallic species with stoichiometries of HSe2, HSe and H3Se are identified above ~120 GPa and they all exhibit superconductive behaviors, of which the hydrogen-rich HSe and H3Se phases show high Tc in the range of 40-110 K. Our simulations established the high-temperature superconductive nature of selenium hydrides and provided useful route for experimental verification.
