Large Scale Structure Formation in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Gravity

We study the large scale structure formation in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity. It is found that the linear growth of scalar perturbations in EiBI gravity deviates from that in general relativity for modes with large wave numbers ($k$), but the deviation is largely suppressed with the expansion of the Universe. We investigate the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect in EiBI gravity, and find that its effect on the angular power spectrum of the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is almost the same as that in the Lambda-cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model. We further calculate the linear matter power spectrum in EiBI gravity and compare it with that in the $Λ$CDM model. Deviation is found on small scales ($k\gtrsim 0.1 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$), which can be tested in the future by observations from galaxy surveys.

Birkhoff's Theorem in f(T) Gravity up to the Perturbative Order

f(T) gravity, a generally modified teleparallel gravity, has become very popular in recent times as it is able to reproduce the unification of inflation and late-time acceleration without the need of a dark energy component or an inflation field. In this present work, we investigate specifically the range of validity of Birkhoff's theorem with the general tetrad field via perturbative approach. At zero order, Birkhoff's theorem is valid and the solution is the well known Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric. Then considering the special case of the diagonal tetrad field, we present a new spherically symmetric solution in the frame of f(T) gravity up to the perturbative order. The results with the diagonal tetrad field satisfy the physical equivalence between the Jordan and the so-called Einstein frames, which are realized via conformal transformation, at least up to the first perturbative order.

A Specific Case of Generalized Einstein-aether Theories

With the dark energy phenomena explored over a decade, in this present work we discuss a specific case of the generalized Einstein-aether theories, in which the modified Friedmann Equation is similar to that in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane world model. We compute the joint statistic constraints on model parameters in this specific case by using the recent type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) shift parameter data, and the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) data traced by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Furthermore, we analyze other constrains from the observational Hubble parameter data (OHD). The comparison with the standard cosmological model (cosmological constant $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) model) is clearly shown; also we comment on the interesting relation between the coupling constant $M$ in this model and the special accelerate scale in the MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) model initially given by Milgrom with the hope for interpreting the galaxy rotation curves without introducing mysterious dark matter.

Bulk viscous cosmology: unified dark matter

The bulk viscosity is introduced to model unified dark matter. The viscous unified model assumes the universe is filled with a single fluid with the bulk viscosity. We review the general framework of the viscous cosmology. The Hubble parameter has a direct connection with the bulk viscosity coefficient. For concrete form of the bulk viscosity, the Hubble parameter which has the scaling relation with the redshift can be obtained. We discuss two viscosity models and the cosmological evolution to which they lead. Using SNe Ia data, the viscosity model can be fitted. We briefly review the fitting method here.

Observe the open universe in the sky?

We first review the related works on the observable consequence of landscape and the regulation of e-foldings during inflation. We focus on a branch of observable consequence of landscape which predicts an open universe with negative curvature if e-foldings $N>62$. After discussing the observable regulation from the aspect by Kaloper, Kleban and Sorbo, we make an argument that in the non-flat background the observable $N$ is suppressed by a factor $k/ρ_{0}$. We point out that this seems to detect the information where e-foldings $N>62$ possibly. Finally, we discuss our outcomes with the recent work by Arkani-Hamed et al.

Scalar perturbation of the viscosity dark fluid cosmological model

A general equation of state is used to model unified dark matter and dark energy (dark fluid), and it has been proved that this model is equivalent to a single fluid with time-dependent bulk viscosity. In this paper, we investigate scalar perturbation of this viscosity dark fluid model. For particular parameter selection, we find that perturbation quantity can be obtained exactly in the future universe. We numerically solve the perturbation evolution equations, and compare the results with those of $Λ$CDM model. Gravitational potential and the density perturbation of the model studied here have the similar behavior with the standard model, though there exists significant value differences in the late universe.

Modification from Noncommutative Inflation

We explore the noncommutative effect on single field inflation and compare with WMAP five-year data. First, we calculate the noncommutative effect from the potential and dynamical terms, and construct the general form of modified power spectrum. Second, we consider the leading order modification of slow-roll, DBI and K-inflation and unite the modification, which means the modification is nearly model independent at this level. Finally, comparing with the WMAP5 data, we find that the modified can be well realized as the origin of the relative large spectral index and the quite small running.

Exploring trans-Planckian physics and the curvature effect by primordial power spectrum with WMAP five-year data

The vacuum inflation with a boundary condition specified at a short-distance scale in a generally primeval non-flat Universe, and implications of the correspondingly modified primordial power spectrum via the WMAP data are investigated. We obtain a general form of the modified primordial power spectrum including the effects of both possibly new physics scale and the spatial curvature. The modulation of the primordial power spectrum due to new physics is of the order $H/Λ$, where $H$ is the Hubble parameter during inflation and $Λ$ is the new physics scale that is key to inflation, while the modulation from the curvature effect is of the order $K/k^2$, where $K$ is the spatial curvature before inflation and $k$ is the comoving wave number. We also find that a closed Universe before inflation is favored by WMAP five-year data.

Exact solutions of embedding the four-dimensional perfect fluid in a five- or higher-dimensional Einstein spacetime and the cosmological interpretations

We investigate an exact solution that describes the embedding of the four-dimensional (4D) perfect fluid in a five-dimensional (5D) Einstein spacetime. The effective metric of the 4D perfect fluid as a hypersurface with induced matter is equivalent to the Robertson-Walker metric of cosmology. This general solution shows interconnections among many 5D solutions, such as the solution in the braneworld scenario and the topological black hole with cosmological constant. If the 5D cosmological constant is positive, the metric periodically depends on the extra dimension. Thus we can compactify the extra dimension on $S^1$ and study the phenomenological issues. We also generalize the metric ansatz to the higher-dimensional case, in which the 4D part of the Einstein equations can be reduced to a linear equation.

Exact solutions of embedding the 4D Universe in a 5D Einstein manifold

One of the simplest way to extend 4D cosmological models is to add another spatial dimension to make them 5D. In particular, it has been shown that the simplest of such 5D models, i.e., one in which the right hand side of the Einstein equation is empty, induces a 4D nonempty Universe. Accordingly, the origin of matter in the 4D real Universe might be mathematically attributed to the existence of one (fictitious) extra spatial dimension. Here we consider the case of an empty 5D Universe possessing a cosmological constant $Λ$ and obtain exact solutions for both positive and negative values of $Λ$. It is seen that such a model can naturally reduce to a power law $Λ$CDM model for the real Universe. Further, it can be seen that, the arbitrary constants and functions appearing in this model are endowed with definite physical meanings.

Tachyon field inspired dark energy and supernovae constraints

The tachyon field in cosmology is studied by applying the generating function method to obtain exact solutions. The equation of state parameter of the tachyon field is $w=-1+ε\dot{ϕ^2}$, which can be expressed as a function in terms of the redshift $z$. Based on these solutions, we propose some tachyon-inspired dark energy models to explore the properties of the corresponding cosmological evolution. The explicit relations between Hubble parameter and redshift enable us to test the models with SNe Ia data sets easily. In the current work we employ the SNe Ia data with the parameter $\mathcal{A}$ measured from the SDSS and the shift parameter $\mathcal{R}$ from WMAP observations to constrain the parameters in our models.

A Cosmic Model Parameterizing the late Universe

A simple speed-up cosmology model is proposed to account for the dark energy puzzle. We condense contributions from dark energy and curvature term into one effective parameter in order to reduce parameter degeneracies and to find any deviation from flat concordance $Λ$CDM model, by considering that the discrimination between dynamical and non-dynamical sources of cosmic acceleration as the best starting point for analyzing dark energy data sets both at present and in future. We also combine recent Type Ia Supernova (SNIa), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Baryon Oscillation (BAO) to constrain model parameter space. Degeneracies between model parameters are discussed by using both degeneracy diagram and data analysis including high redshift information from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) sample. The analysis results show that our model is consistent with cosmological observations. We try to distinct the curvature effects from the specially scaling dark energy component as parameterized. We study the linear growth of large scale structure, and finally show the effective dark energy equation of state in our model and how the matter component coincidences with the dark energy numerically.

Hamiltonian formalism in Friedmann cosmology and its quantization

We propose a Hamiltonian formalism for a generalized Friedmann-Roberson-Walker cosmology model in the presence of both a variable equation of state (EOS) parameter $w(a)$ and a variable cosmological constant $Λ(a)$, where $a$ is the scale factor. This Hamiltonian system containing 1 degree of freedom and without constraint, gives Friedmann equations as the equation of motion, which describes a mechanical system with a variable mass object moving in a potential field. After an appropriate transformation of the scale factor, this system can be further simplified to an object with constant mass moving in an effective potential field. In this framework, the $Λ$ cold dark matter model as the current standard model of cosmology corresponds to a harmonic oscillator. We further generalize this formalism to take into account the bulk viscosity and other cases. The Hamiltonian can be quantized straightforwardly, but this is different from the approach of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in quantum cosmology.

Accelerating Universe with a dynamic cosmological term

Keeping in mind the current picture of an accelerating and flat Universe, some specific dynamical models of the cosmological term $Λ$ have been selected for investigating the nature of dark energy. Connecting the free parameters of the models with the cosmic matter and vacuum energy density parameters, it is shown that the models are equivalent. Using the selected models, the present values of some of the physical parameters have been estimated, and a glimpse at the past decelerating universe has also been presented. It is observed that most of these cosmological parameters nicely agree with the values suggested by the Type Ia Supernovae and other experimental data.

Dark viscous fluid described by a unified equation of state in cosmology

We generalize the $Λ$CDM model by introducing a unified EOS to describe the Universe contents modeled as dark viscous fluid, motivated by the fact that a single constant equation of state (EOS) $p=-p_0$ ($p_0>0$) reproduces the $Λ$CDM model exactly. This EOS describes the perfect fluid term, the dissipative effect, and the cosmological constant in a unique framework and the Friedmann equations can be analytically solved. Especially, we find a relation between the EOS parameter and the renormalizable condition of a scalar field. We develop a completely numerical method to perform a $χ^2$ minimization to constrain the parameters in a cosmological model directly from the Friedmann equations, and employ the SNe data with the parameter $\mathcal{A}$ measured from the SDSS data to constrain our model. The result indicates that the dissipative effect is rather small in the late-time Universe.

Cosmology with extended Chaplygin gas media and $w=-1$ crossing

In this paper the accelerating expansion of our universe at the late cosmic evolution time in a generally modified (extended) \emph{Chaplygin gas} (Dark Fluid) model is detailed, which is characterized by two parameters ($m$, $α$). Different choices to the parameters $m$ and $α$ divide this model into two main kinds of situation by different properties with cosmological interests. With proper choices of parameters, we find that this extended model can realize the phantom divide $w=-1$ (Equation Of State parameter) crossing phenomenon with interesting ranges of the scale factor value $a(t)$ corresponding to $w=-1$ and present value of state parameter $w$. Additionally, through Taylor series expansion of the function $A(a)$ in the extended Chaplygin gas model, a specific Equation of State is gained. Under the framework of Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmic model, it can successfully explain the accelerating expansion of our universe. However, the value of $w$ in this case is large than -1, that is, indicating it like a quintessence fluid and no $w=-1$ crossing occurs.

Friedmann cosmology with a generalized equation of state and bulk viscosity

The universe media is considered as a non-perfect fluid with bulk viscosity and described by a more general equation of state. We assume the bulk viscosity is a linear combination of the two terms: one is constant, and the other is proportional to the scalar expansion $θ=3\dot{a}/a$. The equation of state is described as $p=(γ-1)ρ+p_0$, where $p_0$ is a parameter. This model can be used to explain the dark energy dominated universe. Different choices of the parameters may lead to three kinds of fates of the cosmological evolution: no future singularity, big rip, or Type III singularity of Ref. [S. Nojiri, S.D. Odintsov, and S. Tsujikawa, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{71}, 063004 (2005)].

Codimension Two Branes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

Codimension two branes play an interesting role in attacking the cosmological constant problem. Recently, in order to handle some problems in codimension two branes in Einstein gravity, Bostock {\it et al.} have proposed using six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity instead of six-dimensional Einstein gravity. In this paper, we present the solutions of codimension two branes in six-dimensional EGB gravity. We show that Einstein's equations take a "factorizable" form for a factorized metric tensor ansatz even in the presence of the higher-derivative Gauss-Bonnet term. Especially, a new feature of the solution is that the deficit angle depends on the brane geometry. We discuss the implication of the solution to the cosmological constant problem. We also comment on a possible problem of inflation model building on codimension two branes.
