Shear subdiffusion in non-relativistic holography

We study shear fluctuations in non-relativistic holographic systems coupled to torsional Newton-Cartan geometry, using asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity. We identify a universal subdiffusive shear mode characterized by the quartic dispersion relation $ω=-iD_4 k^4$, in sharp contrast to the conventional hydrodynamic diffusion. We derive this result analytically through a systematic higher-order matched asymptotic expansion connecting near-horizon and far-region solutions, and we verify it with direct numerical quasinormal mode calculations. Our numerics demonstrate that the first non-hydrodynamic mode is purely imaginary and gapped, following the dispersion relation $ω=-iω_0-i D k^2$, and that both the hydrodynamic and the first non-hydrodynamic modes pass through pole-skipping points. These results highlight Lifshitz holography as an efficient framework for anomalous transport in strongly coupled non-relativistic quantum matter.

Holographic Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theories including a non-hydrodynamic mode

We derive the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theories for diffusion including the lowest non-hydrodynamic degree of freedom from holographic Gubser-Rocha systems. At low temperature the dynamical non-hydrodynamic mode could be either an IR mode or a slow mode, which is related to IR quantum critical excitations or encodes the information of all energy scales. This additional dynamical vector mode could be viewed as an ultraviolet sector of the diffusive hydrodynamic theory. We construct two different effective actions for each case and discuss their physical properties. In particular we show that the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger symmetry is preserved.

Holographic Lifshitz flows

Without Lorentz symmetry, generic fixed points of the renormalization group (RG) are labelled by their dynamical (or `Lifshitz') exponent $z$. Hence, a rich variety of possible RG flows arises. The first example is already given by the standard non-relativistic limit, which can be viewed as the flow from a $z=1$ UV fixed point to a $z=2$ IR fixed point. In strongly coupled theories, there are good arguments suggesting that Lorentz invariance can emerge dynamically in the IR from a Lorentz violating UV. In this work, we perform a generic study of fixed points and the possible RG flows among them in a minimal bottom-up holographic model without Lorentz invariance, aiming to shed light on the possible options and the related phenomenology. We find: i) A minor generalization of previous models involving a massive vector field with allowed self-couplings leads to a much more efficient emergence of Lorentz invariance than in the previous attempts. Moreover, we find that generically the larger is the UV dynamical exponent $z_{UV}$ the faster is the recovery of Lorentz symmetry in the IR. ii) We construct explicitly a holographic model with a line of fixed points, realizing different Lifshitz scaling along the line. iii) We also confirm the monotonicity of a recently proposed a-function along all our Lorentz violating RG flows.

Chiral magnetic waves in strongly coupled Weyl semimetals

Propagating chiral magnetic waves (CMW) are expected to exist in chiral plasmas due to the interplay between the chiral magnetic and chiral separation effects induced by the presence of a chiral anomaly. Unfortunately, it was pointed out that, because of the effects of electric conductivity and dissipation, CMW are overdamped and therefore their signatures are unlikely to be seen in heavy-ion collision experiments and in the quark gluon plasma. Nonetheless, the chiral anomaly plays a fundamental role in Weyl semimetals and their anomalous transport properties as well. Hence, CMW could be potentially observed in topological semimetals using table-top experiments. By using a holographic model for strongly coupled Weyl semimetals, we investigate in detail the nature of CMW in presence of Coulomb interactions and axial charge relaxation and estimate whether, and in which regimes, CMW could be observed as underdamped collective excitations in topological materials.

Entanglement entropy as an order parameter for strongly coupled nodal line semimetals

Topological semimetals are a class of many-body systems exhibiting novel macroscopic quantum phenomena at the interplay between high energy and condensed matter physics. They display a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) which evades the standard Landau paradigm. In the case of Weyl semimetals, the anomalous Hall effect is a good non-local order parameter for the TQPT, as it is proportional to the separation between the Weyl nodes in momentum space. On the contrary, for nodal line semimetals (NLSM), the quest for an order parameter is still open. By taking advantage of a recently proposed holographic model for strongly-coupled NLSM, we explicitly show that entanglement entropy (EE) provides an optimal probe for nodal topology. We propose a generalized $c$-function, constructed from the EE, as an order parameter for the TQPT. Moreover, we find that the derivative of the renormalized EE with respect to the external coupling driving the TQPT diverges at the critical point, signaling the rise of non-local quantum correlations. Finally, we show that these quantum information quantities might be able to characterize not only the critical point but the whole quantum critical region at finite temperature.

Breakdown of hydrodynamics from holographic pole collision

We study the breakdown of diffusive hydrodynamics in holographic systems dual to neutral dilatonic black holes with extremal near horizon geometries conformal to AdS$_2\times\,$R$^2$. We find that at low temperatures by tuning the effective gauge coupling constant in the infra-red, the lowest non-hydrodynamic mode, which collides with the charge diffusive mode and sets the scales at which diffusive hydrodynamics break down, could be either an infra-red mode or a slow mode, resulting in different scaling behaviors of the local equilibrium scales. We confirm that the upper bound for the charge diffusion constant is always satisfied using the velocity and timescale of local equilibration from the pole collision. We also examine the breakdown of hydrodynamics at general temperature and find that the convergence radius has nontrivial dependence on temperature, in addition to the effective gauge coupling constant.

An improved holographic nodal line semimetal

We study an improved holographic model for the strongly coupled nodal line semimetal which satisfies the duality relation between the rank two tensor operators $\barψγ^{μν}ψ$ and $\barψγ^{μν}γ^5ψ$. We introduce a Chern-Simons term and a mass term in the bulk for a complex two form field which is dual to the above tensor operators and the duality relation is automatically satisfied from holography. We find that there exists a quantum phase transition from a topological nodal line semimetal phase to a trivial phase. In the topological phase, there exist multiple nodal lines in the fermionic spectrum which are topologically nontrivial. The bulk geometries are different from the previous model without the duality constraint, while the resulting properties are qualitatively similar to those in that model. This improved model provides a more natural ground to analyze transports or other properties of strongly coupled nodal line semimetals.

Chiral vortical conductivity across a topological phase transition from holography

We study the chiral vortical conductivity in a holographic Weyl semimetal model, which describes a topological phase transition from the strongly coupled topologically nontrivial phase to a trivial phase. We focus on the temperature dependence of the chiral vortical conductivity where the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly plays a crucial role. After a proper renormalization of the chiral vortical conductivity by the anomalous Hall conductivity and temperature squared, we find that at low temperature in both the Weyl semimetal phase and the quantum critical region this renormalized ratio stays as universal constants. More intriguingly, this ratio in the quantum critical region depends only on the emergent Lifshitz scaling exponent at the quantum critical point.

Universality in the stress tensor for Holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface via fluid/gravity correspondence

We investigate the stress tensor for holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface through perturbing the Schwarzchild-AdS black brane background to the first order perturbations in the scenario of fluid/gravity correspondence. We investigate the most general perturbations of the metric without any gauge fixing. We consider various boundary conditions and demonstrate the properties of the corresponding holographic fluids. The critical fact is that the spatial components of the first order stress tensors of the holographic fluids can be rewritten in a concordant form, which implicates that there is an underlying universality in the first order stress tensor. We find this universality in the first order stress tensor for holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface by an exhaustive investigation of perturbations of the full bulk metric.

Generalized Vaidya Solutions and Misner-Sharp mass for $n$-dimensional massive gravity

Dynamical solutions are always of interest to people in gravity theories. We derive a series of generalized Vaidya solutions in the $n$-dimensional de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity with a singular reference metric. Similar to the case of the Einstein gravity, the generalized Vaidya solution can describe shining/absorbing stars. Moreover, we also find a more general Vaidya-like solution by introducing a more generic matter field than the pure radiation in the original Vaidya spacetime. As a result, the above generalized Vaidya solution is naturally included in this Vaidya-like solution as a special case. We investigate the thermodynamics for this Vaidya-like spacetime by using the unified first law, and present the generalized Misner-Sharp mass. Our results show that the generalized Minser-Sharp mass does exist in this spacetime. In addition, the usual Clausius relation $δQ= TdS$ holds on the apparent horizon, which implicates that the massive gravity is in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. We find that the work density vanishes for the generalized Vaidya solution, while it appears in the more general Vaidya-like solution. Furthermore, the covariant generalized Minser-Sharp mass in the $n$-dimensional de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity is also derived by taking a general metric ansatz into account.

The effects of massive graviton on the equilibrium between the black hole and radiation gas in an isolated box

It is well known that the black hole can has temperature and radiate the particles with black body spectrum, i.e. Hawking radiation. Therefore, if the black hole is surrounded by an isolated box, there is a thermal equilibrium between the black hole and radiation gas. A simple case considering the thermal equilibrium between the Schwarzschild black hole and radiation gas in an isolated box has been well investigated previously in detail, i.e. taking the conservation of energy and principle of maximal entropy for the isolated system into account. In this paper, following the above spirit, the effects of massive graviton on the thermal equilibrium will be investigated. For the gravity with massive graviton, we will use the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity which has been proven to be ghost free. Because the graviton mass depends on two parameters in the dRGT massive gravity, here we just investigate two simple cases related to the two parameters, respectively. Our results show that in the first case the massive graviton can suppress or increase the condensation of black hole in the radiation gas although the $T-E$ diagram is similar like the Schwarzschild black hole case. For the second case, a new $T-E$ diagram has been obtained. Moreover, an interesting and important prediction is that the condensation of black hole just increases from the zero radius of horizon in this case, which is very different from the Schwarzschild black hole case.
