Partial $U(1)_A$ Restoration and $η$ Enhancement in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

We calculate the thermally averaged rates for the $η$-$π$ conversion and $η$ scattering using the Di Vecchia-Veneziano model and t' Hooft model, which incorporate explicitly the $U(1)_A$ anomaly. Assuming an exponential suppression of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly, we also take into account the partial restoration of $U(1)_A$ symmetry at high temperatures. We find that the chemical equilibrium between $η$ and $π$ breaks up considerably earlier than the thermal equilibrium. Two distinct scenarios for the $η$ freeze-out are discussed and the corresponding chemical potentials are calculated. We predict an enhancement of the thermal $η$-production as a possible signal of the partial $U(1)_A$ restoration in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Approach to Parton Equilibration

Perturbative QCD-based models of parton production and equilibration in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions are reviewed with an emphasis on the treatment of quantum interference effects. Uncertainties in the initial parton production and their effects on later parton equilibration are considered. Probes of early parton dynamics are also discussed.

HIJING 1.0: A Monte Carlo Program for Parton and Particle Production in High Energy Hadronic and Nuclear Collisions

Based on QCD-inspired models for multiple jets production, we developed a Monte Carlo program to study jet and the associated particle production in high energy $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ collisions. The physics behind the program which includes multiple minijet production, soft excitation, nuclear shadowing of parton distribution functions and jet interaction in dense matter is briefly discussed. A detailed description of the program and instructions on how to use it are given.

Open Charm Production in an Equilibrating Parton Plasma

Open charm production during the equilibration of a gluon dominated parton plasma is calculated, with both the time-dependent temperature and parton densities given by a set of rate equations. Including pre-thermal production, the total enhancement of open charm production over the initial gluon fusion depends sensitively on the initial parton density and the effective temperature. The dependence of the pre-thermal charm production on the space-momentum correlation in the initial parton phase-space distribution is also discussed.

Heavy Quark Production in pp Collisions

A systematic study of the inclusive single heavy quark and heavy-quark pair production cross sections in pp collisions is presented for RHIC and LHC energies. We compare with existing data when possible. The dependence of the rates on the renormalization and factorization scales is discussed. Predictions of the cross sections are given for two different sets of parton distribution functions.

The LPM effect in QCD and Radiative energy loss in a quark-gluon plasma

The non-abelian analog of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect is investigated in perturbative QCD. Extending our previous studies, the suppression of induced soft bremsstrahlung due to multiple scatterings of quarks in the spinor representation is considered. The effective formation time of gluon radiation due to the color interference is shown to depend on the color representation of the emitting parton, and an improved formula for the radiative energy loss is derived that interpolates between the factorization and Bethe-Heitler limits.

How Disoriented Chiral Condensates Form: Quenching vs. Annealing

We demonstrate that semiclassical fluctuations, their relaxation, and the chiral phase transition are automatically incorporated in the numerical simulations of the classical equations of motion in the linear $σ$-model when longitudinal and transverse expansions are included. We find that domains of disoriented chiral condensate with 4--5 fm in size can form through a quench while an annealing leads to domains of smaller sizes. We also demonstrate that quenching cannot be achieved by relaxing a chirally symmetric system through expansion.

Parton Equilibration in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Medium effects which include color screening and Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal suppression of induced radiation are discussed in connection with the equilibration of dense partonic system in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Taking into account of these medium effects, the equilibration rate for a gluonic gas are derived and the consequences are discussed.

Signals of Disoriented Chiral Condensate

If a disoriented chiral condensate is created over an extended space-time region following a rapid cooling in hadronic or nuclear collisions, the misalignment of the condensate with the electroweak symmetry breaking can generate observable effects in the processes which involve both strong and electromagnetic interactions. We point out the relevance of the dilepton decay of light vector mesons as a signal for formation of the disoriented condensate. We predict that the decay ρ^0 to dileptons will be suppressed and/or the ρresonance peak widens, while the decay ωto dileptons will not be affected by the condensate.

Cluster Structure of Disoriented Chiral Condensates in Rapidity Distribution

We study the creation of disoriented chiral condensates with some initial boundary conditions that may be expected in the relativistic heavy ion collisions. The equations of motion in the linear $σ$-model are solved numerically with and without a Lorentz-boost invariance. We suggest that a distinct cluster structure of coherent pion production in the rapidity distribution may emerge due to a quench and may be observed in experiments.

Minijet-associated Dilepton Production in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Dilepton production associated with minijets is calculated in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions using the first order approximation of the dilepton fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons. The full QCD evolution of the fragmentation functions is also studied. We find that the dilepton pairs from the fragmentation of minijets are comparable to direct Drell-Yan at $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV for small dilepton invariant mass $M\sim$ 1-2 GeV/c$^2$ while dominant over a large range of mass at $\sqrt{s}=6400$ AGeV.

Calculating Dilepton Rates from Monte Carlo Simulations of Parton Production

To calculate dilepton rates in a Monte Carlo simulation of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, one usually scales the number of similar QCD processes by a ratio of the corresponding differential probabilities. We derive the formula for such a ratio especially for dilepton bremsstrahlung processes. We also discuss the non-triviality of including higher order corrections to direct Drell-Yan process. The resultant mass spectra from our Monte Carlo simulation are consistent with the semi-analytical calculation using dilepton fragmentation functions.

Perturbative Gluon Shadowing in Heavy Nuclei

We study how much gluon shadowing can be perturbatively generated through the modified QCD evolution in heavy nuclei. The evolution of small-$x$ gluons is investigated within the semiclassical approximation. The method of characteristics is used to evaluate the shadowed distributions in low-$Q$ and small-$x$ region. In solving the modified evolution equation, we model in simultaneously fusions from independent constituents and from the same constituent, both in a proton and in a large loosely bound nucleus of $A\sim 200$. In addition to the actual distributions at small $x$, we study the ratios of the distributions at an initial scale $Q_0 = 2$ GeV, and show that a strong nuclear shadowing can follow from the modified QCD evolution.

Space-time Structure of Initial Parton Production in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The space and time evolution of initial parton production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated within the framework of perturbative QCD which includes both initial and final state radiations. Uncertainty principle is used to relate the life time of a radiating parton to its virtuality and momentum. The interaction time of each hard or semihard parton scattering is also taken into account. For central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, most of the partons are found to be produced within 0.5 fm/c after the total overlap of the two colliding nuclei. The local momentum distribution is approximately isotropical at that time. The implication on how to treat correctly the the secondary scattering in an ultimate parton cascading model is also discussed.

Multiple Collisions and Induced Gluon Bremsstrahlung in QCD

Induced soft gluon bremsstrahlung associated with multiple collisions is calculated via perturbative QCD. We derive the non-abelian analog of the Landau-Pomeranchuk effect that suppresses induced soft radiation with formation times exceeding the mean free path, $λ$. The dependence of the suppression effect on the $SU(N)$ representation of the jet parton as well as the kinematic variables is expressed through a radiation formation factor. Unlike in QED, the finite contribution from the small $x$ regime in QCD leads to an approximately constant radiative energy loss per unit length, $dE/dz\propto μ^2$, in the high energy limit that is sensitive to the infrared screening scale, $μ$, of the medium. As a function of the dimensionless parameter $ζ=λμ^2/E$, we show furthermore how the energy dependence of $dE/dz$ evolves from the above constant for $ζ\ll 1$ to the more familiar (Bethe-Heitler) linear dependence for $ζ\gg 1$.

Studying minijets via the $p_T$ dependence of two-particle correlation in azimuthal angle $ϕ$

Following my previous proposal that two-particle correlation functions can be used to resolve the minijet contribution to particle production in minimum biased events of high energy hadronic interactions, I study the $p_T$ and energy dependence of the correlation. Using HIJING Monte Carlo model, it is found that the correlation $c(ϕ_1,ϕ_2)$ in azimuthal angle $ϕ$ between two particles with $p_T>p_T^{cut}$ resembles much like two back-to-back jets as $p_T^{cut}$ increases at high colliding energies due to minijet production. It is shown that $c(0,0)-c(0,π)$, which is related to the relative fraction of particles from minijets, increases with energy. The background of the correlation for fixed $p_T^{cut}$ also grows with energy due to the increase of multiple minijet production. Application of this analysis to the study of jet quenching in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is also discussed.
