Parton energy loss effect on Z+jet production in high-energy nuclear collisions

We give a report of medium modification of Z+jet correlations in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider using Sherpa to generate initial Z+jet at next-leading-order matrix element matched parton shower, and the Linear Boltzmann Transport Model for jet propagation in the expanding quark-gluon-plasma. Our numerical calculations show excellent agreement with all available observables of Z+jet simultaneously in both proton + proton and Pb+Pb collisions. Our results can well explain the shift of momentum asymmetry $x_{jZ}=p_T^{jet}/p_T^Z$ as well as its mean values, the suppression of the jet yields per Z trigger $R_{jZ}$ and the modification of azimuthal angle correlation $Δϕ_{jZ}$. We also demonstrate that it is the energy loss effect on multi-jets from high-order corrections that leads to the suppression of the Z+jet correlation at small azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ_{jZ}$ and at small $x_{jZ}$. The jet shape reflecting transverse momentum distribution inside the jet is also calculated, which indicates that large fraction of jet energy is carried away from the jet axis in Pb+Pb collisions.

E-by-e jet suppression, anisotropy, medium response and hard-soft tomography

The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model for jet propagation and interaction in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has been used to study jet quenching in high-energy heavy-lion collisions. The suppression of single inclusive jet production, medium modification of $γ$-jet correlation, jet profiles and fragmentation functions as observed in experiments at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be described well by LBT in which jet-induced medium response is shown to play an essential role. In event-by-event simulations of jet quenching within LBT, jet azimuthal anisotropies are found to correlate linearly with the anisotropic flows of bulk hadrons from the underlying hydrodynamic events.

HIJING++, a Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator for the High-luminosity Era of the LHC and Beyond

HIJING++ (Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator) is the successor of the widely used original HIJING, developed almost three decades ago. While the old versions (1.x and 2.x) were written in FORTRAN, HIJING++ was completely rewritten in C++. During the development we keep in mind the requirements of the high-energy heavy-ion community: the new Monte Carlo software have a well designed modular framework, therefore any future modifications are much easier to implement. It contains all the physical models that were also present in it's predecessor, but utilizing modern C++ features it also includes native thread based parallelism, an easy-to-use analysis interface and a modular plugin system, which makes room for possible future improvements. In this paper we summarize the results of our performance tests measured on 2 widely used architectures.

Revisiting heavy quark radiative energy loss in nuclei within the high-twist approach

We revisit the calculation of multiple parton scattering of a heavy quark in nuclei within the framework of recently improved high-twist factorization formalism, in which gauge invariance is ensured by a delicate setup of the initial partons' transverse momenta. We derive a new result for medium modified heavy quark fragmentation functions in deeply inelastic scattering. It is consistent with the previous calculation of light quark energy loss in the massless limit, but leads to a new correction term in the heavy quark case, which vanishes in the soft gluon radiation limit. We show numerically the significance of the new correction term in the calculation of heavy quark energy loss as compared to previous studies and with soft gluon radiation approximation.

Longitudinal fluctuations and decorrelations of anisotropic flows at the LHC and RHIC energies

We perform a systematic study on the decorrelation of anisotropic flows along the pseudorapidity in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC and RHIC energies. The dynamical evolution of the QGP fireball is simulated via the CLVisc (ideal) (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics model, with the fully fluctuating initial condition from A-Multi-Phase-Transport (AMPT) model. Detailed analysis is performed on the longitudinal decorrelations of elliptic, triangular and quadrangular flows in terms of flow vectors, flow magnitudes and flow orientations (event planes). It is found that pure flow magnitudes have smaller longitudinal decorrelation than pure flow orientations, and the decorrelation of flow vectors is a combined effect of both flow magnitudes and orientations. The longitudinal decorrelation of elliptic flow has a strong and non-monotonic centrality dependence due to the initial elliptic collision geometry: smallest decorrelation in mid-central collisions. In contrast, the decorrelations of triangular and quadrangular flows have weak centrality dependence, slightly larger decorrelations in more peripheral collisions. Our numerical results for Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC are in good agreement with the ATLAS data, while our RHIC results predict much larger longitudinal decorrelations as compared to the LHC. We further analyze the longitudinal structures of the AMPT initial conditions and find that the final-state longitudinal decorrelation effects are strongly correlated with the lengths of the initial string structures in the AMPT model. The decorrelation effects are typically larger at lower collision energies and in more peripheral collisions due to shorter lengths of the string structures in the initial states.

Z+jet correlation with NLO-matched parton-shower and jet-medium interaction in high-energy nuclear collisions

The impact of jet quenching on $Z^0$-tagged jets in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is investigated. We employ Sharpa Monte Carlo program that combines next-to-leading order matrix elements with matched resummation of parton shower to compute the initial $Z^0$+jet production. The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model is then used to simulate the propagation, energy attenuation of and medium response induced by jet partons in the quark-gluon plasma. With both higher-order corrections and matched soft/collinear radiation as well as a sophisticated treatment of parton energy loss and medium response in LBT, our numerical calculations can provide the best description so far of all available observables of $Z^0$+jet simultaneously in both p+p and Pb+Pb collisions, in particular, the shift of the distribution in transverse momentum asymmetry $x_{\rm jZ}=p_T^{\rm jet}/p_T^Z$, the modification of azimuthal angle correlation in $Δϕ_{\rm{j}Z}=|ϕ_{\rm jet}-ϕ_Z|$ and the overall suppression of average number of $Z^0$-tagged jets per boson $R_{\rm jZ}$ at $\sqrt s =5.02$ TeV as measured by the CMS experiment. We also show that higher-order corrections to $Z^0$+jet production play an indispensable role in understanding $Z^0$+jet azimuthal angle correlation at small and intermediate $Δϕ_{\rm jZ}$, and momentum imbalance at small $x_{\rm jZ}$. Jet quenching of the sub-leading jets is shown to lead to suppression of $Z^0$+jet correlation at small azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ_{\rm jZ}$ and at small $x_{\rm jZ}$.

Z+jet productions in heavy-ion collisions

We report a systematic study of Z+jet correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC by combining the next-leading-order matrix elements calculations with matched parton shower in Sherpa for the initial Z+jet production, and Linear Boltzmann transport Model for jet propagation in the expanding quark-gluon-plasma. Our numerical results can well explain CMS measurements on Z+jet correlation in Pb+Pb collisions: the shift of $p_T$ imbalance $x_{jZ}=p_T^{jet}/p_T^Z$ and their mean values, the suppression of the average number of jet partners per Z boson $R_{jZ}$, as well as the modification of azimuthal angle correlations $Δϕ_{jZ}$. We also demonstrate that high-order corrections play a significant role in the understanding of Z+jet correlations at high energies.

Disentangling covariant Wigner functions for chiral fermions

We develop a general formalism for the quantum kinetics of chiral fermions in a background electromagnetic field based on a semiclassical expansion of covariant Wigner functions in the Planck constant $\hbar$. We demonstrate to any order of $\hbar$ that only the time-component of the Wigner function is independent while other components are explicit derivative. We further demonstrate to any order of $\hbar$ that a system of quantum kinetic equations for multiple-components of Wigner functions can be reduced to one chiral kinetic equation involving only the single-component distribution function. These are remarkable properties of the quantum kinetics of chiral fermions and will significantly simplify the description and simulation of chiral effects in heavy ion collisions and Dirac/Weyl semimetals. We present the unintegrated chiral kinetic equations in four-momenta up to $O(\hbar ^2)$ and the integrated ones in three-momenta up to $O(\hbar)$. We find that some singular terms emerge in the integration over the time component of the four-momentum, which result in a new source term contributing to the chiral anomaly, in contrast to the well-known scenario of the Berry phase term. Finally we rewrite our results in any Lorentz frame with a reference four-velocity and show how the non-trivial transformation of the distribution function in different frames emerges in a natural way.

Longitudinal fluctuations and decorrelations of anisotropic flows in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the longitudinal decorrelations of elliptic, triangular and quadrangular flows in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC and RHIC energies. The event-by-event CLVisc (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics model, combined with the fully fluctuating AMPT initial conditions, is utilized to simulate the space-time evolution of the strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. Detailed analysis is performed for the longitudinal decorrelations of flow vectors, flow magnitudes and flow orientations. We find strong correlations between final-state longitudinal decorrelations of anisotropic flows and initial-state longitudinal structures and collision geometry: while the decorrelation of elliptic flow shows a non-monotonic centrality dependence due to initial elliptic geometry, typically the longitudinal flow decorrelations are larger in lower energy and less central collisions where the mean lengths of the string structure are shorter in the initial states.

First Results with HIJING++ on High-energy Heavy Ion Collisions

We present preliminary results with HIJING++ (3.1.1) for identified hadron production in high-energy heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. The recently developed HIJING++ version is based on the latest version of PYTHIA8 and contains all the nuclear effects that have been included in the HIJING2.552, which will be improved by a new version of the shadowing parametrization and jet quenching module. Here, we summarize the structure and the speed gain due to parallelization of the new program code, also presenting some comparison between experimental data.

Multiple jets and $γ$-jet correlation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

$γ$-jet production is considered one of the best probes of the hot quark-gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions since the direct $γ$ can be used to gauge the initial energy and momentum of the associated jet. This is investigated within the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model for jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation. With both parton energy loss and medium response from jet-medium interaction included, LBT can describe experimental data well on $γ$-jet correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Multiple jets associated with direct $γ$ production are found to contribute significantly to $γ$-jet correlation at small $p_T^{\rm jet}<p_T^γ$ and large azimuthal angle relative to the opposite direction of $γ$. Jet medium interaction not only suppresses the leading jet at large $p_T^{\rm jet}$ but also sub-leading jets at large azimuthal angle. This effectively leads to the narrowing of $γ$-jet correlation in azimuthal angle instead of broadening due to jet-medium interaction. The $γ$-jet profile on the other hand will be broadened due to jet-medium interaction and jet-induced medium response. Energy flow measurements relative to the direct photon is illustrated to reflect well the broadening and jet-induced medium response.

Pseudorapidity distribution and decorrelation of anisotropic flow within CLVisc hydrodynamics

Studies of fluctuations and correlations of soft hadrons and hard and electromagnetic probes of the dense and strongly interacting medium require event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations of high-energy heavy-ion collisions that are computing intensive. We develop a (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model -- CLVisc that is parallelized on Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) using Open Computing Language (OpenCL) with 60 times performance increase for space-time evolution and more than 120 times for the Cooper-Frye particlization relative to that without GPU parallelization. The pseudo-rapidity dependence of anisotropic flow $v_n(η)$ are then computed in CLVisc with initial conditions given by the A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, with energy density fluctuations both in the transverse plane and along the longitudinal direction. Although the magnitude of $v_n(η)$ and the ratios between $v_2(η)$ and $v_3(η)$ are sensitive to the effective shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η_v/s$, the shape of the $v_{n}(η)$ distributions in $η$ do not depend on the value of $η_v/s$. The decorrelation of $v_n$ along the pseudo-rapidity direction due to the twist and fluctuation of the event-planes in the initial parton density distributions is also studied. The decorrelation observable $r_n(η^a, η^b)$ between $v_n\{-η^a\}$ and $v_n\{η^a\}$ with the auxiliary reference window $η^b$ is found not sensitive to $η_v/s$ when there is no initial fluid velocity. For small $η_v/s$, the initial fluid velocity from mini-jet partons introduces sizable splitting of $r_n(η^a, η^b)$ between the two reference rapidity windows $η^b \in [3, 4]$ and $η^b \in [4.4, 5.0]$, as has been observed in experiment. The implementation of CLVisc and guidelines on how to efficiently parallelize scientific programs on GPUs are also provided.

Effects of jet-induced medium excitation in $γ$-hadron correlation in A+A collisions

Coupled Linear Boltzmann Transport and hydrodynamics (CoLBT-hydro) is developed for co-current and event-by-event simulations of jet transport and jet-induced medium excitation (j.i.m.e.) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. This is made possible by a GPU parallelized (3+1)D hydrodynamics that has a source term from the energy-momentum deposition by propagating jet shower partons and provides real time update of the bulk medium evolution for subsequent jet transport. Hadron spectra in $γ$-jet events of A+A collisions at RHIC and LHC are calculated for the first time that include hadrons from both the modified jet and j.i.m.e.. CoLBT-hydro describes well experimental data at RHIC on the suppression of leading hadrons due to parton energy loss. It also predicts the enhancement of soft hadrons from j.i.m.e. The onset of soft hadron enhancement occurs at a constant transverse momentum due to the thermal nature of soft hadrons from j.i.m.e. which also have a significantly broadened azimuthal distribution relative to the jet direction. Soft hadrons in the $γ$ direction are, on the other hand, depleted due to a diffusion wake behind the jet.

Linear Boltzmann Transport for Jet Propagation in the Quark-Gluon Plasma: Elastic Processes and Medium Recoil

A Linear Boltzmann Transport model within perturbative QCD is developed for the study of parton propagation inside the quark-gluon plasma. Both leading partons and thermal recoil partons are tracked so that one can also study jet-induced medium excitations. In this study, we implement the complete set of elastic parton scattering processes and investigate elastic parton energy loss, transverse momentum broadening and their nontrivial energy and length dependence. We further investigate medium modifications of the jet shape and fragmentation functions of reconstructed jets. Contributions from thermal recoil partons are found to have significant influences on jet shape, fragmentation functions and angular distribution of reconstructed jets.

Effect of medium recoil and $p_T$ broadening on single inclusive jet suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Jet energy loss and single inclusive jet suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied within a pQCD parton model that includes both elastic and radiative interactions between jet shower and medium partons as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma. The collisional energy loss of jets with a given cone-size is found to be relatively small comparing with the radiative energy loss. However the effect of transverse momentum broadening due to elastic scattering is significant in the calculation of radiative energy loss within the higher-twist formalism. The nuclear modification factors for single inclusive jets with different cone-sizes are calculated and compared to experimental data as measured by ALICE and ATLAS experiments in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV. Results on jet suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV are also presented.

An equation-of-state-meter of QCD transition from deep learning

Supervised learning with a deep convolutional neural network is used to identify the QCD equation of state (EoS) employed in relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of heavy-ion collisions from the simulated final-state particle spectra $ρ(p_T,Φ)$. High-level correlations of $ρ(p_T,Φ)$ learned by the neural network act as an effective "EoS-meter" in detecting the nature of the QCD transition. The EoS-meter is model independent and insensitive to other simulation inputs, especially the initial conditions. Thus it provides a powerful direct-connection of heavy-ion collision observables with the bulk properties of QCD.

Multistage Monte-Carlo simulation of jet modification in a static medium

The modification of hard jets in an extended static medium held at a fixed temperature is studied using three different Monte-Carlo event generators (LBT, MATTER, MARTINI). Each event generator contains a different set of assumptions regarding the energy and virtuality of the partons within a jet versus the energy scale of the medium, and hence, applies to a different epoch in the space-time history of the jet evolution. For the first time, modeling is developed where a jet may sequentially transition from one generator to the next, on a parton-by-parton level, providing a detailed simulation of the space-time evolution of medium modified jets over a much broader dynamic range than has been attempted previously in a single calculation. Comparisons are carried out for different observables sensitive to jet quenching, including the parton fragmentation function and the azimuthal distribution of jet energy around the jet axis. The effect of varying the boundary between different generators is studied and a theoretically motivated criterion for the location of this boundary is proposed. The importance of such an approach with coupled generators to the modeling of jet quenching is discussed.

Local and global $Λ$ polarization in a vortical fluid

We compute the fermion spin distribution in the vortical fluid created in off-central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ the event-by-event (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model. The spin polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity in quantum kinetic theory. As a result of strong collectivity, the spatial distribution of the local vorticity on the freeze-out hyper-surface strongly correlates to the rapidity and azimuthal angle distribution of fermion spins. We investigate the sensitivity of the local polarization to the initial fluid velocity in the hydrodynamic model and compute the global polarization of Λ hyperons by the AMPT model. The energy dependence of the global polarization agrees with the STAR data.
