Dynamics of quantum dissipation systems interacting with Fermion and Boson grand canonical bath ensembles: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

A hierarchical equations of motion formalism for a quantum dissipation system in a grand canonical bath ensemble surrounding is constructed, on the basis of the calculus-on-path-integral algorithm, together with the parametrization of arbitrary non-Markovin bath that satisfies fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The influence functionals for both the Fermion or Boson bath interaction are found to be of the same path-integral expression as the canonical bath, assuming they all satisfy the Gaussian statistics. However, the equation of motion formalism are different, due to the fluctuation-dissipation theories that are distinct and used explicitly. The implications of the present work to quantum transport through molecular wires and electron transfer in complex molecular systems are discussed.

Quantum measurement characteristics of double-dot single electron transistor

Owing to a few unique advantages, double-dot single electron transistor has been proposed as an alternative detector for charge states. In this work, we present a further study for its signal-to-noise property, based on a full analysis of the setup configuration symmetry. It is found that the effectiveness of the double-dot detector can approach that of an ideal detector, if the symmetric capacitive coupling is taken into account. The quantum measurement efficiency is also analyzed, by comparing the measurement time with the measurement-induced dephasing time.

Full counting statistics of transport through two-channel Coulomb blockade systems

A mesoscopic Coulomb blockade system with two identical transport channels is studied in terms of full counting statistics. It is found that the average current cannot distinguish the quantum constructive interference from the classical non-interference, but the shot noise and skewness are more sensitive to the nature of quantum mechanical interference and can fulfill that task. The interesting super-Poisson shot noise is found and is demonstrated as a consequence of constructive interference, which induces an effective system with fast-and-slow transport channels. Dephasing effects on the counting statistics are carried out to display the continuous transition from quantum interfering to non-interfering transports.

Continuous weak measurement and feedback control of a solid-state charge qubit: physical unravelling of non-Lindblad master equation

Conventional quantum trajectory theory developed in quantum optics is largely based on the physical unravelling of Lindbald-type master equation, which constitutes the theoretical basis of continuous quantum measurement and feedback control. In this work, in the context of continuous quantum measurement and feedback control of a solid-state charge qubit, we present a physical unravelling scheme of non-Lindblad type master equation. Self-consistency and numerical efficiency are well demonstrated. In particular, the control effect is manifested in the detector noise spectrum, and the effect of measurement voltage is discussed.

Optical Manipulation of Single Electron Spin in Doped and Undoped Quantum Dots

The optical manipulation of electron spins is of great benefit to solid-state quantum information processing. In this letter, we provide a comparative study on the ultrafast optical manipulation of single electron spin in the doped and undoped quantum dots. The study indicates that the experimental breakthrough can be preliminarily made in the undoped quantum dots, because of the relatively less demand.

Quantum coherence control of solid-state charge qubit by means of a suboptimal feedback algorithm

The quantum coherence control of a solid-state charge qubit is studied by using a suboptimal continuous feedback algorithm within the Bayesian feedback scheme. For the coherent Rabi oscillation, the present algorithm suggests a simple bang-bang control protocol, in which the control parameter is modulated between two values. For the coherence protection of idle state, the present approach is applicable to arbitrary states, including those lying on the equator of the Bloch sphere which are out of control in the previous Markovian feedback scheme.

Quantum master equation scheme of time-dependent density functional theory to time-dependent transport in nano-electronic devices

In this work a practical scheme is developed for the first-principles study of time-dependent quantum transport. The basic idea is to combine the transport master-equation with the well-known time-dependent density functional theory. The key ingredients of this paper include: (i) the partitioning-free initial condition and the consideration of the time-dependent bias voltages which base our treatment on the Runge-Gross existence theorem; (ii) the non-Markovian master equation for the reduced (many-body) central system (i.e. the device); and (iii) the construction of Kohn-Sham master equation for the reduced single-particle density matrix, where a number of auxiliary functions are introduced and their equations of motion (EOM) are established based on the technique of spectral decomposition. As a result, starting with a well-defined initial state, the time-dependent transport current can be calculated simultaneously along the propagation of the Kohn-Sham master equation and the EOM of the auxiliary functions.

Quantum measurement of an electron in disordered potential: delocalization versus measurement voltages

Quantum point contact (QPC), one of the typical mesoscopic transport devices, has been suggested to be an efficient detector for quantum measurement. In the context of two-state charge qubit, our previous studies showed that the QPC's measurement back-action cannot be described by the conventional Lindblad quantum master equation. In this work, we study the measurement problem of a multi-state system, say, an electron in disordered potential, subject to the quantum measurement of the mesoscopic detector QPC. The effect of measurement back-action and the detector's readout current are analyzed, where particular attention is focused on some new features and the underlying physics associated with the measurement-induced delocalization versus the measurement voltages.

Calculation of the current noise spectrum in mesoscopic transport: an efficient quantum master equation approach

Based on our recent work on quantum transport [Li et al., Phys. Rev. B 71, 205304 (2005)], where the calculation of transport current by means of quantum master equation was presented, in this paper we show how an efficient calculation can be performed for the transport noise spectrum. Compared to the longstanding classical rate equation or the recently proposed quantum trajectory method, the approach presented in this paper combines their respective advantages, i.e., it enables us to tackle both the many-body Coulomb interactionand quantum coherence on equal footing and under a wide range of setup circumstances. The practical performance and advantages are illustrated by a number of examples, where besides the known results and new insights obtained in a transparent manner, we find that this alternative approach is much simpler than other well-known full quantum mechanical methods such as the Landauer-Büttiker scattering matrix theory and the nonequilibrium Green's function technique.

Theory on the Ultrafast Manipulation of Electron Spin by Optical Means

Based on a multi-particle-state stimulated Raman adiabatic passage approach, a comprehensive theoretical study on the ultrafast optical manipulation of electron spins in quantum wells is presented. In addition to corroborating the experimental findings [Science {\bf 292}, 2458 (2001)], we improve the expression of the optical-pulse-induced effective magnetic field, in comparison with the one obtained via the conventional single-particle ac-Stark shift. Further study of the effect of hole spin relaxation reveals that while the coherent optical manipulation of electron spin in undoped quantum wells would deteriorate in the presence of relatively fast hole-spin relaxation, the coherent control in doped systems can be quite robust against the decoherence. The implications of present results on quantum dots will also be discussed.

Quantum trajectory analysis for electrical detection of single-electron spin resonance

A Monte Carlo simulation on the basis of quantum trajectory approach is carried out for the measurement dynamics of a single electron spin resonance. The measured electron, which is confined in either a quantum dot or a defect trap, is tunnel-coupled to a side reservoir and continuously monitored by a mesoscopic detector. The simulation not only recovers the observed telegraphic signal of detector current, but also predicts unique features in the output power spectrum which are associated with electron dynamics in different regimes.

Quantum Transport from the Perspective of Quantum Open Systems

By viewing the non-equilibrium transport setup as a quantum open system, we propose a reduced-density-matrix based quantum transport formalism. At the level of self-consistent Born approximation, it can precisely account for the correlation between tunneling and the system internal many-body interaction, leading to certain novel behavior such as the non-equilibrium Kondo effect. It also opens a new way to construct time-dependent density functional theory for transport through large-scale complex systems.

Quantum master equation approach to quantum transport through mesoscopic systems

For quantum transport through mesoscopic system, a quantum master equation approach is developed in terms of compact expressions for the transport current and the reduced density matrix of the system. The present work is an extension of Gurvitz's approach for quantum transport and quantum measurement, namely, to finite temperature and arbitrary bias voltage. Our derivation starts from a second-order cummulant expansion of the tunneling Hamiltonian, then follows conditional average over the electrode reservoir states. As a consequence, in the usual weak tunneling regime, the established formalism is applicable for a wide range of transport problems. The validity of the formalism and its convenience in application are well illustrated by a number of examples.

Spontaneous Relaxation of a Charge Qubit under Electrical Measurement

In this work we first derive a generalized conditional master equation for quantum measurement by a mesoscopic detector, then study the readout characteristics of qubit measurement where a number of new features are found. The work would in particular highlight the qubit spontaneous relaxation effect induced by the measurement itself rather than an external thermal bath.

Exact quantum master equation via the calculus on path integrals

An exact quantum master equation formalism is constructed for the efficient evaluation of quantum non-Markovian dissipation beyond the weak system-bath interaction regime in the presence of time-dependent external field. A novel truncation scheme is further proposed and compared with other approaches to close the resulting hierarchically coupled equations of motion. The interplay between system-bath interaction strength, non-Markovian property, and required level of hierarchy is also demonstrated with the aid of simple spin-boson systems.

Quantum measurement of a solid-state qubit: A unified quantum master equation approach revisited

Quantum measurement of a solid-state qubit by a mesoscopic detector is of fundamental interest in quantum physics and an essential issue in quantum computing. In this work, by employing a unified quantum master equation approach constructed in our recent publications, we study the measurement-induced relaxation and dephasing of the coupled-quantum-dot states measured by a quantum-point-contact. Our treatment pays particular attention on the detailed-balance relation, which is a consequence of properly accounting for the energy exchange between the qubit and detector during the measurement process. As a result, our theory is applicable to measurement at arbitrary voltage and temperature. Both numerical and analytical results for the qubit relaxation and dephasing are carried out, and new features are highlighted in concern with their possible relevance to future experiments.

Photon-assisted Fano Resonance and Corresponding Shot-Noise in a Quantum Dot

We have studied the Fano resonance in photon-assisted transport in a quantum dot and calculated both the coherent current and spectral density of shot noise. It is predicted, for the first time, that the shape of Fano profile will also appear in satellite peaks. It is found that the variations of Fano profiles with the strengths of nonresonant transmissions are not synchronous in absorption and emission sidebands. The effect of interference on photon-assisted pumped current has been also investigated. We further predict the current and spectral density of shot noise as a function of the phase, which exhibits an intrinsic property of resonant and nonresonant channels in the structures.
