Sustained macroscopic quantum coherence in a superradiant solid under ambient conditions

Macroscopic quantum coherence, such as in laser, Bose-Einstein condensates, superfluids, and superconductors, is important to fundamental physics and useful for quantum technologies. Superradiance provides a mechanism to produce coherence among a large number of particles and photons. Its implementation, however, has been limited to gaseous systems, solids at very low temperature, or short pulses. Here we demonstrate a solid-state superradiant maser under ambient conditions, which establishes long-lived coherence among about $10^{14}$ nitrogen-vacancy center spins in diamond and about $10^9$ photons in a microwave cavity. By varying the system parameters to access the above-threshold, well-above-threshold, and deep-above-threshold regimes, we observed continuous-wave masing, periodic amplitude modulation, and sequences of superradiant bursts, which are attributed, correspondingly, to macroscopic spin coherence synchronized at a fixed frequency, a coherent time crystal of large spins, and unsynchronized superradiant transients. This work demonstrates that macroscopic quantum coherence can be spontaneously generated and maintained in solids under ambient conditions and provides a solid-state platform for exploring bright quantum lights with many-body correlations.

Global Correlation and Local Information Flows in Controllable Non-Markovian Open Quantum Dynamics

In a fully-controllable experiment platform for studying non-Markovian open quantum dynamics, we show that the non-Markovianity could be investigated from the global and local aspects. By mixing random unitary dynamics, we demonstrate non-Markovian and Markovian open quantum dynamics. From the global point of view, by tuning the base frequency we demonstrate the transition from the Markovianity to the non-Markovianity as measured by the quantum mutual information (QMI). In a Markovian open quantum process, the QMI decays monotonically, while it may rise temporarily in a non-Markovian process. However, under some circumstances, it is not sufficient to globally investigate the non-Markovianity of the open quantum dynamics. As an essential supplement, we further utilize the quantum Fisher information (QFI) flow to locally characterize the non-Markovianity in different channels. We demonstrate that the QMI in combination with the QFI flow are capable of measuring the non-Markovianity for a multi-channel open quantum dynamics.

Exact and efficient quantum simulation of open quantum dynamics for various of Hamiltonians and spectral densities

Recently, we have theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated an exact and efficient quantum simulation of photosynthetic light harvesting in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), cf. B. X. Wang, \textit{et al.} npj Quantum Inf.~\textbf{4}, 52 (2018). In this paper, we apply this approach to simulate the open quantum dynamics in various photosynthetic systems with different Hamiltonians. By numerical simulations, we show that for Drude-Lorentz spectral density the dimerized geometries with strong couplings within the donor and acceptor clusters respectively exhibit significantly-improved efficiency. Based on the optimal geometry, we also demonstrate that the overall energy transfer can be further optimized when the energy gap between the donor and acceptor clusters matches the peak of the spectral density. Moreover, by exploring the quantum dynamics for different types of spectral densities, e.g. Ohmic, sub-Ohmic, and super-Ohmic spectral densities, we show that our approach can be generalized to effectively simulate open quantum dynamics for various Hamiltonians and spectral densities. Because $\log_{2}N$ qubits are required for quantum simulation of an $N$-dimensional quantum system, this quantum simulation approach can greatly reduce the computational complexity compared with popular numerically-exact methods.

High-fidelity, low-latency polarization quantum state transmissions over a hollow-core conjoined-tube fibre at around 800 nm

The performances of optical fibre-based quantum information systems are limited by the intrinsic properties of silica glass materials, e.g. high latency, Rayleigh-scattering loss wavelength scaling law, and cross-coupling induced modal impurity. Hollow-core optical fibre (HCF) promises to unify air-borne light propagation and non-line-of-sight transmission, thus holding great potentials for versatile photonics-based quantum infor-mation applications. The early version of HCF based on photonic-bandgap guidance has not proven itself as a reliable quantum channel because of the poor modal purity in both spatial and polarization domains, as well as significant difficulty in fabrication when the wavelength shifts to the visible region. In this work, based on the polarization degree of freedom, we first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstrate high-fidelity (~0.98) single-photon transmission and distribution of entangled photons over a conjoined-tube hollow-core fibre (CTF) by using commercial silicon single-photon avalanche photodiodes. Our CTF realized the combined merits of low loss, high spatial mode purity, low polarization degradation, and low chromatic dispersion. We also demonstrate single-photon low latency (~99.96% speed of light in vacuum) transmission, thus paving the way for extensive uses of HCF links in versatile polarization-based quantum information processing.

Single-photon Quantum Router by Two Distant Artificial Atoms

Nowadays, quantum router is playing a key role in quantum communication and quantum network- s. Here we propose a tunable single-photon routing scheme, based on quantum interference, which uses two distant artificial atoms coupling to two transmission lines. Depending on the distance between the two atoms, the collective effect will lead to destructive or constructive interference between the scattered photons. Under standing wave condition, single photon from the incident channel can be perfectly transmitted or redirected into another channel by asymmetric or symmet- ric reflected phase shift of atoms, respectively. Therefore, we show that our router can be controlled by adjusting the detuning of the atoms and interatomic distance, without any classical field.

Control of two-atom entanglement with two thermal fields in coupled cavities

The dynamical evolution of a quantum system composed of two coupled cavities, each containing a two-level atom and a single-mode thermal field, is investigated under different conditions. The entanglement between the two atoms is controlled by the hopping strength and the detuning between the atomic transition and the cavities. We find that when the atomic transition is far off-resonant with both the eigenmodes of the coupled cavity system, the maximally entangled state for the two atoms can be generated with the initial state in which one atom is in the ground state and the other is in the excited state. When both the two atoms are initially in the excited state, the entanglement exhibits period sudden birth and death. By choosing appropriate parameter values, the initial maximal entanglement of the two atoms can be frozen. The relation between the concurrence and cooperative parameter is calculated.

Distributed entanglement induced by dissipative bosonic media

We describe a scheme with analytic result that allows to generate steady-state entanglement for two atoms over a dissipative bosonic medium. The resonant coupling between the mediating bosonic mode and cavity modes produces three collective atomic decay channels. This dissipative dynamics, together with the unitary process induced by classical microwave fields, drives the two atoms to the symmetric or asymmetric entangled steady state conditional upon the choice of the phases of the microwave fields. The effects on the steady-state entanglement of off-resonance mediating bosonic modes are analyzed. The entanglement can be obtained with high fidelity regardless of the initial state and there is a linear relation in the scaling of the fidelity with the cooperativity parameter. The fidelity is insensitive to the fluctuation of the Rabi frequencies of the classical driving fields.

Engineering W-type steady states for three atoms via dissipation in an optical cavity

We propose a scheme for the dissipative preparation of W-type entangled steady-states of three atoms trapped in an optical cavity. The scheme is based on the competition between the decay processes into and out of the target state. By suitable choice of system parameters, we resolve the whole evolution process and employ the effective operator formalism to engineer four independent decay processes, so that the target state becomes the stationary state of the quantum system. The scheme requires neither the preparation of definite initial states nor the precise control of system parameters and preparation time.

Steady-State Entanglement for Distant Atoms by Dissipation in Coupled Cavities

We propose a scheme for the generation of entangled states for two atoms trapped in separate cavities coupled to each other. The scheme is based on the competition between the unitary dynamics induced by the classical fields and the collective decays induced by the dissipation of two delocalized field modes. Under certain conditions, the symmetric or asymmetric entangled state is produced in the steady state. The analytical result shows that the distributed steady entanglement can be achieved with high fidelity independent of the initial state, and is robust against parameter fluctuations. We also find out that the linear scaling of $F$ has a quadratic improvement compared to distributed entangled state preparation protocols based on unitary dynamics.
