Magnetic skyrmion spectrum under voltage excitation and its linear modulation

Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasiparticles with great potential for applications in future information storage and processing devices because of their nanoscale size, high stability, and large velocity. Recently, the high-frequency properties of skyrmions have been explored for magnon nanodevices. Here we systematically study the dynamics of an isolated skyrmion under voltage excitation through the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy effect in a circular thin film. A theoretical model considering the demagnetization energy, which has often been neglected or treated superficially in previous skyrmion research but is demonstrated to have importance in determining the skyrmion dynamic state, is developed. With our model, the periodic oscillation of the skyrmion radius can be solved numerically with similar precision compared to micromgnetic simulations, and the characteristic frequency of the skyrmion breathing can be determined analytically with greater precision than previous studies. Furthermore, we find that the breathing skyrmion can be analogized as a modulator by investigating its linear modulation functionality under sinusoidal-form voltage excitation. Different from the conventional modulation system with complex CMOS circuits, this skyrmion modulator device integrates with both the modulation and carrier wave generation functionality, thus showing greater convenience and efficiency in applications. Our findings can provide useful guidance for both theoretical and experimental skyrmions research as well as the development of skyrmion-based magnonic devices with significant potential applicability in future communication system.

A Time-driven Data Placement Strategy for a Scientific Workflow Combining Edge Computing and Cloud Computing

Compared to traditional distributed computing environments such as grids, cloud computing provides a more cost-effective way to deploy scientific workflows. Each task of a scientific workflow requires several large datasets that are located in different datacenters from the cloud computing environment, resulting in serious data transmission delays. Edge computing reduces the data transmission delays and supports the fixed storing manner for scientific workflow private datasets, but there is a bottleneck in its storage capacity. It is a challenge to combine the advantages of both edge computing and cloud computing to rationalize the data placement of scientific workflow, and optimize the data transmission time across different datacenters. Traditional data placement strategies maintain load balancing with a given number of datacenters, which results in a large data transmission time. In this study, a self-adaptive discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm with genetic algorithm operators (GA-DPSO) was proposed to optimize the data transmission time when placing data for a scientific workflow. This approach considered the characteristics of data placement combining edge computing and cloud computing. In addition, it considered the impact factors impacting transmission delay, such as the band-width between datacenters, the number of edge datacenters, and the storage capacity of edge datacenters. The crossover operator and mutation operator of the genetic algorithm were adopted to avoid the premature convergence of the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm, which enhanced the diversity of population evolution and effectively reduced the data transmission time. The experimental results show that the data placement strategy based on GA-DPSO can effectively reduce the data transmission time during workflow execution combining edge computing and cloud computing.

All entangled states can generate certified randomness

Random number has many applications, it plays an important role in quantum information processing. It's not difficult to generate true random numbers, the main difficulty is how to certify the random numbers generated by untrusted devices. In [Nature(London) 464, 1021 (2010)], the authors provided us a way to generate certified random number by Bell's theorem. In their scheme, we can use the nonlocal behavior of entangled states to generate certified randomness. But there are entangled states, which admit a local hidden variable model, could not be used in their scheme. We show in our paper that the nonlocal correlations in every entangled state can be used to generate certified randomness, and we use Werner states as an example to show how to quantify the output randomness.

Runtime Model Based Approach to Smart Home System Development

When developing smart home systems, developers integrate and compose smart devices and software applications. Because of their diversity and heterogeneity, developers usually encounter many problems. In this paper, we present a runtime model based approach to smart home system development. First, we analyze mobile applications associated with smart devices and then extract some device control APIs. Second, we use SM@RT framework to build the device runtime model. Third, we define the scenario model, that is an abstraction of devices and objects which the system consists of. Fourth, we specify mapping rules from the scenario model to the runtime model and employ a synchronizer, which can interpret the mapping rules, to keep the synchronization between the scenario model and the device runtime model. The mapping handler reads the mapping rules that are defined by developers and does the mapping in terms of them. At last, developers can program smart home systems upon the MOF-compliant scenario model using the state-of-the-art model driven technologies. https://youtu.be/SP12OtmHj50

Ultrasensitive, high-dynamic-range and broadband strain sensing by time-of-flight detection with femtosecond-laser frequency combs

Ultrahigh-resolution optical strain sensors provide powerful tools in various scientific and engineering fields, ranging from long-baseline interferometers to civil and aerospace industries. Here we demonstrate an ultrahigh-resolution fibre strain sensing method by directly detecting the time-of-flight (TOF) change of the optical pulse train generated from a free-running passively mode-locked laser (MLL) frequency comb. We achieved a local strain resolution of 18 pε/Hz1/2 and 1.9 pε/Hz1/2 at 1 Hz and 3 kHz, respectively, with largedynamic range of >154 dB at 3 kHz. For remote-point sensing at 1-km distance, 80 pε/Hz1/2 (at 1 Hz) and 2.2 pε/Hz1/2 (at 3 kHz) resolution is demonstrated. While attaining both ultrahigh resolution and large dynamic range, the demonstrated method can be readily extended for multiple-point sensing as well by taking advantage of the broad optical comb spectra. These advantages may allow various applications of this sensor in geophysical science, structural health monitoring, and underwater science.

Entanglement witness game

Motivated by Buscemi's semi-quantum nonlocal game [PRL 108, 200401(2012)], We propose an entanglement witness game, a quantum game based on entanglement witness. Similar as the semi-quantum nonlocal game, the existence of entanglement shared by the players is necessary and sufficient for obtaining a positive average payoff in our entanglement witness game. Two explicit examples are constructed to demonstrate how to play our entanglement witness game and its relations with the CHSH nonlocal game.

On restricted edge-connectivity of half-transitive multigraphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a multigraph (it has multiple edges, but no loops). The edge connectivity, denoted by $λ(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum edge-cut of $G$. We call $G$ maximally edge-connected if $λ(G)=δ(G)$, and $G$ super edge-connected if every minimum edge-cut is a set of edges incident with some vertex. The restricted edge-connectivity $λ'(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal disconnects $G$ into non-trivial components. If $λ'(G)$ achieves the upper bound of restricted edge-connectivity, then $G$ is said to be $λ'$-optimal. A bipartite multigraph is said to be half-transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on the sets of its bipartition. In this paper, we will characterize maximally edge-connected half-transitive multigraphs, super edge-connected half-transitive multigraphs, and $λ'$-optimal half-transitive multigraphs.

Basis entropy: A useful physical quantity about projective measurement

Projective measurement can increase the entropy of a state $ρ$, the increased entropy is not only up to the basis of projective measurement, but also has something to do with the properties of the state itself. In this paper we define this increased entropy as basis entropy. And then we discuss the usefulness of this new concept by showing its application in deciding whether a state is pure or not and detecting the existence of quantum discord. And as shown in the paper, this new concept can also be used to describe decoherence.

In a World That Counts: Clustering and Detecting Fake Social Engagement at Scale

How can web services that depend on user generated content discern fake social engagement activities by spammers from legitimate ones? In this paper, we focus on the social site of YouTube and the problem of identifying bad actors posting inorganic contents and inflating the count of social engagement metrics. We propose an effective method, Leas (Local Expansion at Scale), and show how the fake engagement activities on YouTube can be tracked over time by analyzing the temporal graph based on the engagement behavior pattern between users and YouTube videos. With the domain knowledge of spammer seeds, we formulate and tackle the problem in a semi-supervised manner --- with the objective of searching for individuals that have similar pattern of behavior as the known seeds --- based on a graph diffusion process via local spectral subspace. We offer a fast, scalable MapReduce deployment adapted from the localized spectral clustering algorithm. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our deployment at Google by achieving an manual review accuracy of 98% on YouTube Comments graph in practice. Comparing with the state-of-the-art algorithm CopyCatch, Leas achieves 10 times faster running time. Leas is actively in use at Google, searching for daily deceptive practices on YouTube's engagement graph spanning over a billion users.

Pricing of European Basket Call Option under Exponential Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process

Pricing of European basket call option with n-assets and a bond is discussed in this paper, where all prices of n-assets and the bond are driven by Exponential Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. The close-form of European basket option pricing formula is derived. Utilizing with 1-order differential approximate numerical solution of stochastic differential equation (Milstein method), a simulation example of European basket option pricing with 3 assets is also given.

Ring model for trapped condensates with synthetic spin-orbit coupling

We derive an effective ring model in momentum space for trapped bosons with synthetic spin-orbit coupling. This effective model is characterized by a peculiar form of the inter particle interactions, which is crucially modified by the external confinement. The ring model allows for an intuitive understanding of the phase diagram of trapped condensates with isotropic spin-orbit coupling, and in particular for the existence of skyrmion lattice phases. The model, which may be generally applied for spinor condensates of arbitrary spin and spin-dependent interactions, is illustrated for the particular cases of spin-1/2 and spin-1 condensates.

Virtual Electrode Recording Tool for EXtracellular potentials (VERTEX): Comparing multi-electrode recordings from simulated and biological mammalian cortical tissue

Local field potentials (LFPs) sampled with extracellular electrodes are frequently used as a measure of population neuronal activity. However, relating such measurements to underlying neuronal behaviour and connectivity is non-trivial. To help study this link, we developed the Virtual Electrode Recording Tool for EXtracellular potentials (VERTEX). We first identified a reduced neuron model that retained the spatial and frequency filtering characteristics of extracellular potentials from neocortical neurons. We then developed VERTEX as an easy-to-use Matlab tool for simulating LFPs from large populations (>100 000 neurons). A VERTEX-based simulation successfully reproduced features of the LFPs from an in vitro multi-electrode array recording of macaque neocortical tissue. Our model, with virtual electrodes placed anywhere in 3D, allows direct comparisons with the in vitro recording setup. We envisage that VERTEX will stimulate experimentalists, clinicians, and computational neuroscientists to use models to understand the mechanisms underlying measured brain dynamics in health and disease.

Ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition of one-dimensional spinor Bose gases with spin-orbit coupling

We have analytically solved one-dimensional interacting two-component bosonic gases with spin-orbit (SO) coupling by the Bethe-ansatz method. Through a gauge transformation, the effect of SO coupling is incorporated into a spin-dependent twisted boundary condition. Our result shows that the SO coupling can influence the eigenenergy in a periodical pattern. The interplay between interaction and SO coupling may induce the energy level crossing for the ground state, which leads to a transition from the ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic state.

Implied volatility formula of European Power Option Pricing

We derive the implied volatility estimation formula in European power call options pricing, where the payoff functions are in the form of $V=(S^α_T-K)^{+}$ and $V=(S^α_T-K^α)^{+}$ ($α>0$)respectively. Using quadratic Taylor approximations, We develop the computing formula of implied volatility in European power call option and extend the traditional implied volatility formula of Charles J.Corrado, et al (1996) to general power option pricing. And the Monte-Carlo simulations are also given.

Analytical solutions for two heteronuclear atoms in a ring trap

We consider two heteronuclear atoms interacting with a short-range $δ$ potential and confined in a ring trap. By taking the Bethe-ansatz-type wavefunction and considering the periodic boundary condition properly, we derive analytical solutions for the heteronuclear system. The eigen-energies represented in terms of quasi-momentums can then be determined by solving a set of coupled equations. We present a number of results, which display different features from the case of identical atoms. Our result can be reduced to the well-known Lieb-Liniger solution when two interacting atoms have the same masses.
