Neutron Scattering Studies on the High-$T_c$ Superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ at Ambient Pressure

After several decades of studies of high-temperature superconductivity, there is no compelling theory for the mechanism yet; however, the spin fluctuations have been widely believed to play a crucial role in forming the superconducting Cooper pairs. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity near 80 K in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure provides a new platform to elucidate the origins of high-temperature superconductivity. We perform elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ at ambient pressure. No magnetic order can be identified down to 10 K. The absence of long-range magnetic order in neutron diffraction measurements may be ascribed to the smallness of the magnetic moment. However, we observe a weak flat spin-fluctuation signal at $\sim$ 45 meV in the inelastic scattering spectra. The observed spin excitations could be interpreted as a result of strong interlayer and weak intralayer magnetic couplings for stripe-type antiferromagnetic orders. Our results provide crucial information on the spin dynamics and are thus important for understanding the superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.

Structural transition, electric transport, and electronic structures in the compressed trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10

Atomic structure and electronic band structure are fundamental properties for understanding the mechanism of superconductivity. Motivated by the discovery of pressure-induced high-temperature superconductivity at 80 K in the bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate La3Ni2O7, the atomic structure and electronic band structure of the trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10 under pressure up to 44.3 GPa are investigated. A structural transition from the monoclinic P21/a space group to the tetragonal I4/mmm around 12.6-13.4 GPa is identified, accompanying with a drop of resistance below 7 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the bonding state of Ni 3dz2 orbital rises and crosses the Fermi level at high pressures, which may give rise to possible superconductivity observed in resistance under pressure in La4Ni3O10. The trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10 shows some similarities with the bilayer La3Ni2O7 and has unique properties, providing a new platform to investigate the underlying mechanism of superconductivity in nickelates.

Preference as Reward, Maximum Preference Optimization with Importance Sampling

Preference learning is a key technology for aligning language models with human values. Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) is a model-based algorithm to optimize preference learning, which first fits a reward model for preference scores and then optimizes the generating policy with an on-policy PPO algorithm to maximize the reward. The processing of RLHF is complex, time-consuming, and unstable. The Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) algorithm uses an off-policy algorithm to directly optimize the generating policy and eliminates the need for a reward model. DPO is more data-efficient and stable. However, DPO has a drawback of overfitting to the preference data and ignoring the KL-regularization term when the preference is deterministic. Identity mapping Preference Optimization(IPO) uses a root-finding MSE loss to incorporate KL-regularization. However, both DPO and IPO fail to properly address the KL-regularization term because the support of the preference distribution is not equal to the reference distribution. In this paper, we propose a simple and intuitive off-policy preference optimization algorithm from an importance sampling view, which we call Maximum Preference Optimization (MPO). MPO incorporates the off-policy KL-regularization term, making regularization truly effective. MPO achieves the best of both worlds by combining the objectives of RLHF and IPO while being an off-policy algorithm. Furthermore, MPO eliminates the need for a reward model and reference policy, simplifying the learning process and reducing memory usage.

Gap and magnetic engineering via doping and pressure in tuning the colossal magnetoresistance in (Mn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$

Ferrimagnetic nodal-line semiconductor Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ keeps the records of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and angular magnetoresistance (AMR). Here we report tuning the electronic transport properties via doping and pressure in (Mn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$)$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$. As the substitution of nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ for magnetic Mn$^{2+}$, ferrimagnetic transition temperature $T_C$ gradually decreases, while the resistivity increases significantly. At the same time, the CMR and AMR are both enhanced for the low-doping compositions (e.g., $x = 0.1$ and 0.2), which can be attributed to doping-induced broadening of the band gap and a larger variation range of the resistivity when undergoing a metal-insulator transition by applying a magnetic field along the $c$ axis. On the contrary, $T_C$ rises with increasing pressure due to the enhancement of the magnetic exchange interactions until a structural transition occurs at $\sim$13 GPa. Meanwhile, the activation gap is lowered under pressure and the magnetoresistance is decreased dramatically above 6 GPa where the gap is closed. At 20 and 26 GPa, evidences for a superconducting transition at $\sim$5 K are observed. The results reveal that doping and pressure are effective methods to tune the activation gap, and correspondingly, the CMR and AMR in nodal-line semiconductors, providing an approach to investigate the magnetoresistance materials for novel spintronic devices.

Electronic and magnetic excitations in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

The striking discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) of 80 K in a bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under a moderately high pressure of about 14 GPa ignited a new wave of studying HTSC in nickelates. The properties of the parental phase at ambient pressure may contain key information on basic interactions therein and bosons that may mediate pairing giving birth to superconductivity. Moreover, the bilayer structure of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ may suggest a distinct minimal model in comparison to cuprate superconductors. Here using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we studied La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at ambient pressure, and found that Ni 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$, Ni 3$d_{z^2}$, and ligand oxygen 2$p$ orbitals dominate the low-energy physics with a small charge-transfer energy. Remarkably, well-defined optical-like magnetic excitations were found to soften into a quasi-static spin-density-wave ordering, evidencing the strong electronic correlations and rich magnetic properties. Based on a Heisenberg spin model, we found that the inter-layer effective magnetic superexchange interaction is much larger than the intra-layer ones, and proposed two viable magnetic structures. Our results set the foundation for further exploration of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ superconductor.

Well-Posedness for McKean-Vlasov SDEs Driven by Multiplicative Stable Noises

We establish the well-posedness for a class of McKean-Vlasov SDEs driven by symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process ($1/2<α\leq1$), where the drift coefficient is Hölder continuous in space variable, while the noise coefficient is Lipscitz continuous in space variable, and both of them satisfy the Lipschitz condition in distribution variable with respect to Wasserstein distance. If the drift coefficient does not depend on distribution variable, our methodology developed in this paper applies to the case $α\in(0,1]$. The main tool relies on heat kernel estimates for (distribution independent) stable SDEs and Banach's fixed point theorem.

Coupling by Change of Measure for Conditional McKean-Vlasov SDEs and Applications

The couplings by change of measure are applied to establish log-Harnack inequality(equivalently the entropy-cost estimate) for conditional McKean-Vlasov SDEs and derive the quantitative conditional propagation of chaos in relative entropy for mean field interacting particle system with common noise. For the log-Harnack inequality, two different types of couplings will be constructed for non-degenerate conditional McKean-Vlasov SDEs with multiplicative noise. As to the quantitative conditional propagation of chaos in relative entropy, the initial distribution of interacting particle system is allowed to be singular with that of limit equation. The above results are also extended to conditional distribution dependent stochastic Hamiltonian system.

Probability Distance Estimates Between Diffusion Processes and Applications to Singular McKean-Vlasov SDEs

The $L^k$-Wasserstein distance $\mathbb{W}_k (k\ge 1)$ and the probability distance $\mathbb{W}_ψ$ induced by a concave function $ψ$, are estimated between different diffusion processes with singular coefficients. As applications, the well-posedness, probability distance estimates and the log-Harnack inequality are derived for McKean-Vlasov SDEs with multiplicative distribution dependent noise, where the coefficients are singular in time-space variables and $(\mathbb{W}_k+\mathbb{W}_ψ)$-Lipschitz continuous in the distribution variable. This improves existing results derived in the literature under the $\mathbb{W}_k$-Lipschitz or derivative conditions in the distribution variable.

Regularities and Exponential Ergodicity in Entropy for SDEs Driven by Distribution Dependent Noise

As two crucial tools characterizing regularity properties of stochastic systems, the log-Harnack inequality and Bismut formula have been intensively studied for distribution dependent (McKean-Vlasov) SDEs. However, due to technical difficulties, existing results mainly focus on the case with distribution free noise. In this paper, we introduce a noise decomposition argument to establish the log-Harnack inequality and Bismut formula for SDEs with distribution dependent noise, in both non-degenerate and degenerate situations. As application, the exponential ergodicity in entropy is investigated.

Well-Posedness for McKean-Vlasov SDEs with Distribution Dependent Stable Noises

The well-posedness is established for McKean-Vlasov SDEs driven by $α$-stable noises ($1<α<2$). In this model, the drift is Hölder continuous in space variable and Lipschitz continuous in distribution variable with respect to the sum of Wasserstein and weighted variation distances, while the noise coefficient satisfies the Lipschitz condition in distribution variable with respect to the sum of two Wasserstein distances. The main tool relies on Zvonkin's transform, a time-change technique and a two-step fixed point argument.

Regularities for distribution dependent SDEs with fractional noises

In this paper, we investigate the regularities for a class of distribution dependent SDEs driven by two independent fractional noises $B^H$ and $\ti B^{\ti H}$ with Hurst parameters $H\in(0,1)$ and $\ti H\in(1/2,1)$. We establish the log-Harnack inequalities and Bismut formulas for the Lions derivative to this type of equations with distribution dependent noise, in both non-degenerate and degenerate cases. Our proofs consist of utilizing coupling arguments which are indeed backward couplings introduced by F.-Y. Wang \cite{Wang12b}, together with a careful analysis of fractional derivative operator.

Exponential Ergodicity and Propagation of Chaos for Path-Distribution Dependent Stochastic Hamiltonian System

By Girsanov's thoerem and using the existing log-Harnack inequality for distribution independent SDEs, the log-Harnack inequality is derived for path-distribution dependent stochastic Hamiltonian systems. As an application, the exponential ergodicity in relative entropy is obtained by combining with transportation cost inequality. In addition, the quantitative propagation of chaos in the sense of Wasserstein distance, which together with the coupling by change of measure implies the quantitative propagation of chaos in total variation norm as well as relative entropy are obtained.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic properties of the kagome metal SmV6Sn6

Kagome magnets are expected to feature emergent properties due to the interplays among geometry, magnetism, electronic correlation, and band topology. The magnetism and topological electronic states can be tuned via the rare earth engineering in RV6Sn6 kagome metals, where R is a rare earth element. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of SmV6Sn6, a metal with two-dimensional kagome nets of vanadium and frustrated triangular Sm lattice. Partial of the Sm atoms are shifted from the normal R positions by c/2 along the c axis. Magnetic measurements reveal obvious anisotropy, where the easy magnetic axis is within the ab plane. Electronic transports show multiband behaviors below 200 K. Density functional theory calculations find that the electronic structure of SmV6Sn6 hosts flat bands, Dirac cone, and saddle point arising from the V-3d electrons near the Fermi level. No evidence for the existence of charge density wave or magnetic order down to 2 K can be observed. Thus, SmV6Sn6 can be viewed as a modest disordered derivative of the RV6Sn6 structure, in which the disordered rare earth ions can suppress the magnetic order and charge density wave in the RV6Sn6 kagome family.

MUX64, an analogue 64-to-1 multiplexer ASIC for the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector

We present the design and the performance of MUX64, a 64-to-1 analogue multiplexer ASIC for the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD). The MUX64 transmits one of its 64 inputs selected by six address lines for the voltages or temperatures being monitored to an lpGBT ADC channel. The prototype ASICs fabricated in TSMC 130 nm CMOS technology were prepared in wire-bonding and QFN88 packaging format. A total of 280 chips was examined for functionality and quality assurance. The accelerated aging test conducted at 85 degrees celsius shows negligible degradation over 16 days.

Spectroscopic localization of atomic sample plane for precise digital holography

In digital holography, the coherent scattered light fields can be reconstructed volumetrically. By refocusing the fields to the sample planes, absorption and phase-shift profiles of sparsely distributed samples can be simultaneously inferred in 3D. This holographic advantage is highly useful for spectroscopic imaging of cold atomic samples. However, unlike (e.g., biological samples or solid particles), the quasi-thermal atomic gases under laser-cooling are typically featureless without sharp boundaries, invalidating a class of standard numerical refocusing methods. Here, we extend the refocusing protocol based on the Gouy phase anomaly for small phase objects to free atomic samples. With a prior knowledge on a coherent spectral phase angle relation for cold atoms that is robust against probe condition variations, an ``out-of-phase'' response of the atomic sample can be reliably identified, which flips the sign during the numeric back-propagation across the sample plane to serve as the refocus criterion. Experimentally, we determine the sample plane of a laser-cooled $^{39}$K gas released from a microscopic dipole trap, with a $δz\approx 1~{\rm μm}$$\ll 2λ_p/{\rm NA}^2$ axial resolution, with a NA=0.3 holographic microscope at $λ_p=770~$nm probe wavelength.

Existence and Blow-up of solutions for Stochastic Modified Two-component Camassa-Holm System

In this paper, we consider the modified two-component Camassa-Holm System with multiplicative noise. For these SPDEs, we first establish the local existence and pathwise uniqueness of the pathwise solutions in Sobolev spaces $H^{s}\times H^{s}, s>\frac{3}{2}$. Then we show that strong enough noise can actually prevent blow-up with probability 1. Finally, we analyse the effects of weak noise and present conditions on the initial data that lead to the global existence and the blow-up in finite time of the solutions, and their associated probabilities are also obtained.

Harnack Inequality for Distribution Dependent Stochastic Hamiltonian System

The dimension free Harnack inequality is established for the distribution dependent stochastic Hamiltonian system, where the drift is Lipschitz continuous in the measure variable under the distance induced by the Hölder-Dini continuous functions, which are $β(β>\frac{2}{3})$-Hölder continuous on the degenerate component and square root of Dini continuous on the non-degenerate one. The results extend the existing ones in which the drift is Lipschitz continuous in the measure variable under $L^2$-Wasserstein distance.

Growth of a renormalized operator as a probe of chaos

We propose that the size of an operator evolved under holographic renormalization group flow shall grow linearly with the scale and interpret this behavior as a manifestation of the saturation of the chaos bound. To test this conjecture, we study the operator growth in two different toy models. The first is a MERA-like tensor network built from a random unitary circuit with the operator size defined using the integrated out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC). The second model is an error-correcting code of perfect tensors, and the operator size is computed using the number of single-site physical operators that realize the logical operator. In both cases, we observe linear growth.
