Gravitational instability in protoplanetary disk with cooling: 2D global analysis

Self-gravity is important in protoplanetary disks for planet formation through gravitational instability (GI). We study the cooling effect on GI in a thin two-dimensional protoplanetary disk. By solving the linear perturbation equations in global geometry, we obtain all the normal modes. Faster cooling leads to faster growth rate of GI with lower azimuthal wavenumber $m$. According to the spatial structure of normal modes at different mass-averaged Toomre number $\overline{Q}$ and dimensionless cooling timescale $β$, we identify three modes: local, transitional and global. The transitional modes are located in the outer disk while the other two modes in the inner disk. At $β\approx 1$ (the resonance of dynamical timescale and thermal timescale) the growth rate changes sharply and the transitional modes dominate. The disk $α$ due to GI is much higher in the transitional modes than in the other two. Our result implies that the transitional modes at $\overline{Q}\approx 1$ and $β\approx 1$ can plausibly interpret the substructures and planet/brown dwarf formation in the outer disk.

Optimizing QoE-Privacy Tradeoff for Proactive VR Streaming

Proactive virtual reality (VR) streaming requires users to upload viewpoint-related information, raising significant privacy concerns. Existing strategies preserve privacy by introducing errors to viewpoints, which, however, compromises the quality of experience (QoE) of users. In this paper, we first delve into the analysis of the viewpoint leakage probability achieved by existing privacy-preserving approaches. We determine the optimal distribution of viewpoint errors that minimizes the viewpoint leakage probability. Our analyses show that existing approaches cannot fully eliminate viewpoint leakage. Then, we propose a novel privacy-preserving approach that introduces noise to uploaded viewpoint prediction errors, which can ensure zero viewpoint leakage probability. Given the proposed approach, the tradeoff between privacy preservation and QoE is optimized to minimize the QoE loss while satisfying the privacy requirement. Simulation results validate our analysis results and demonstrate that the proposed approach offers a promising solution for balancing privacy and QoE.

Coupling of dynamical tide and orbital motion

Dynamical tide consists of various waves that can resonate with orbital motion. We test this coupling of dynamical tide and orbital motion using a simple two-dimensional shallow water model, which can be applied to a rocky planet covered with thin ocean or atmosphere. Then we take the earth-moon system as a fiducial model to calculate the tidal resonances and orbital evolution. We find that tidal dissipation can even increase with increasing orbital separation because of the coupling of dynamical tide and orbital motion. We draw the conclusion that the coupling is not negligible to study the orbital evolution on secular timescale.

Semantic Segmentation Prior for Diffusion-Based Real-World Super-Resolution

Real-world image super-resolution (Real-ISR) has achieved a remarkable leap by leveraging large-scale text-to-image models, enabling realistic image restoration from given recognition textual prompts. However, these methods sometimes fail to recognize some salient objects, resulting in inaccurate semantic restoration in these regions. Additionally, the same region may have a strong response to more than one prompt and it will lead to semantic ambiguity for image super-resolution. To alleviate the above two issues, in this paper, we propose to consider semantic segmentation as an additional control condition into diffusion-based image super-resolution. Compared to textual prompt conditions, semantic segmentation enables a more comprehensive perception of salient objects within an image by assigning class labels to each pixel. It also mitigates the risks of semantic ambiguities by explicitly allocating objects to their respective spatial regions. In practice, inspired by the fact that image super-resolution and segmentation can benefit each other, we propose SegSR which introduces a dual-diffusion framework to facilitate interaction between the image super-resolution and segmentation diffusion models. Specifically, we develop a Dual-Modality Bridge module to enable updated information flow between these two diffusion models, achieving mutual benefit during the reverse diffusion process. Extensive experiments show that SegSR can generate realistic images while preserving semantic structures more effectively.

Neural Spectral Decomposition for Dataset Distillation

In this paper, we propose Neural Spectrum Decomposition, a generic decomposition framework for dataset distillation. Unlike previous methods, we consider the entire dataset as a high-dimensional observation that is low-rank across all dimensions. We aim to discover the low-rank representation of the entire dataset and perform distillation efficiently. Toward this end, we learn a set of spectrum tensors and transformation matrices, which, through simple matrix multiplication, reconstruct the data distribution. Specifically, a spectrum tensor can be mapped back to the image space by a transformation matrix, and efficient information sharing during the distillation learning process is achieved through pairwise combinations of different spectrum vectors and transformation matrices. Furthermore, we integrate a trajectory matching optimization method guided by a real distribution. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks, including CIFAR10, CIFAR100, Tiny Imagenet, and ImageNet Subset. Projecting Points to Axes: Oriented Object Detection via Point-Axis Representation

This paper introduces the point-axis representation for oriented object detection, emphasizing its flexibility and geometrically intuitive nature with two key components: points and axes. 1) Points delineate the spatial extent and contours of objects, providing detailed shape descriptions. 2) Axes define the primary directionalities of objects, providing essential orientation cues crucial for precise detection. The point-axis representation decouples location and rotation, addressing the loss discontinuity issues commonly encountered in traditional bounding box-based approaches. For effective optimization without introducing additional annotations, we propose the max-projection loss to supervise point set learning and the cross-axis loss for robust axis representation learning. Further, leveraging this representation, we present the Oriented DETR model, seamlessly integrating the DETR framework for precise point-axis prediction and end-to-end detection. Experimental results demonstrate significant performance improvements in oriented object detection tasks.

ReliaAvatar: A Robust Real-Time Avatar Animator with Integrated Motion Prediction

Efficiently estimating the full-body pose with minimal wearable devices presents a worthwhile research direction. Despite significant advancements in this field, most current research neglects to explore full-body avatar estimation under low-quality signal conditions, which is prevalent in practical usage. To bridge this gap, we summarize three scenarios that may be encountered in real-world applications: standard scenario, instantaneous data-loss scenario, and prolonged data-loss scenario, and propose a new evaluation benchmark. The solution we propose to address data-loss scenarios is integrating the full-body avatar pose estimation problem with motion prediction. Specifically, we present \textit{ReliaAvatar}, a real-time, \textbf{relia}ble \textbf{avatar} animator equipped with predictive modeling capabilities employing a dual-path architecture. ReliaAvatar operates effectively, with an impressive performance rate of 109 frames per second (fps). Extensive comparative evaluations on widely recognized benchmark datasets demonstrate Relia\-Avatar's superior performance in both standard and low data-quality conditions. The code is available at \url{https://github.com/MIV-XJTU/ReliaAvatar}.

Is a 3D-Tokenized LLM the Key to Reliable Autonomous Driving?

Rapid advancements in Autonomous Driving (AD) tasks turned a significant shift toward end-to-end fashion, particularly in the utilization of vision-language models (VLMs) that integrate robust logical reasoning and cognitive abilities to enable comprehensive end-to-end planning. However, these VLM-based approaches tend to integrate 2D vision tokenizers and a large language model (LLM) for ego-car planning, which lack 3D geometric priors as a cornerstone of reliable planning. Naturally, this observation raises a critical concern: Can a 2D-tokenized LLM accurately perceive the 3D environment? Our evaluation of current VLM-based methods across 3D object detection, vectorized map construction, and environmental caption suggests that the answer is, unfortunately, NO. In other words, 2D-tokenized LLM fails to provide reliable autonomous driving. In response, we introduce DETR-style 3D perceptrons as 3D tokenizers, which connect LLM with a one-layer linear projector. This simple yet elegant strategy, termed Atlas, harnesses the inherent priors of the 3D physical world, enabling it to simultaneously process high-resolution multi-view images and employ spatiotemporal modeling. Despite its simplicity, Atlas demonstrates superior performance in both 3D detection and ego planning tasks on nuScenes dataset, proving that 3D-tokenized LLM is the key to reliable autonomous driving. The code and datasets will be released.

CEAT: Continual Expansion and Absorption Transformer for Non-Exemplar Class-Incremental Learning

In real-world applications, dynamic scenarios require the models to possess the capability to learn new tasks continuously without forgetting the old knowledge. Experience-Replay methods store a subset of the old images for joint training. In the scenario of more strict privacy protection, storing the old images becomes infeasible, which leads to a more severe plasticity-stability dilemma and classifier bias. To meet the above challenges, we propose a new architecture, named continual expansion and absorption transformer~(CEAT). The model can learn the novel knowledge by extending the expanded-fusion layers in parallel with the frozen previous parameters. After the task ends, we losslessly absorb the extended parameters into the backbone to ensure that the number of parameters remains constant. To improve the learning ability of the model, we designed a novel prototype contrastive loss to reduce the overlap between old and new classes in the feature space. Besides, to address the classifier bias towards the new classes, we propose a novel approach to generate the pseudo-features to correct the classifier. We experiment with our methods on three standard Non-Exemplar Class-Incremental Learning~(NECIL) benchmarks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model gets a significant improvement compared with the previous works and achieves 5.38%, 5.20%, and 4.92% improvement on CIFAR-100, TinyImageNet, and ImageNet-Subset.

Magnetic field of gas giant exoplanets and its influence on the retention of their exomoons

We study the magnetic and tidal interactions of a gas-giant exoplanet with its host star and with its exomoons, and focus on their retention. We briefly revisit the scaling law for planetary dynamo in terms of its mass, radius and luminosity. Based on the virial theorem, we construct an evolution law for planetary magnetic field and find that its initial entropy is important for the field evolution of a high-mass planet. We estimate the magnetic torques on orbit arising from the star-planet and planet-moon magnetic interactions, and find that it can compensate tidal torques and bypass frequency valleys where dynamical-tide response is ineffective. For exomoon's retention we consider two situations. In the presence of a circumplanetary disk (CPD), by comparison between CPD's inner and outer radii, we find that planets with too strong magnetic fields or too small distance from its host star tend not to host exomoons. During the subsequent CPD-free evolution, we find, by comparison between planet's spindown and moon's migration timescales, that hot Jupiters with periods of several days are unlikely to retain large exomoons, albeit they could be surrounded by rings from the debris of tidally disrupted moons. In contrast, moons, if formed around warm or cold Jupiters, can be preserved. Finally, we estimate the radio power and flux density due to the star-planet and planet-moon magnetic interactions and give the upper limit of detection distance by FAST.

Prediction, Communication, and Computing Duration Optimization for VR Video Streaming

Proactive tile-based video streaming can avoid motion-to-photon latency of wireless virtual reality (VR) by computing and delivering the predicted tiles to be requested before playback. All existing works either focus on designing predictors or allocating computing and communications resources. Yet to avoid the latency, the successively executed prediction, communication, and computing tasks should be accomplished within a predetermined time. Moreover, the quality of experience (QoE) of proactive VR streaming depends on the worst performance of the three tasks. In this paper, we jointly optimize the duration of the observation window for predicting tiles and the durations for computing and transmitting the predicted tiles, aimed at balancing the performance for three tasks to maximize the QoE given arbitrary predictor and configured resources. We obtain the closed-form optimal solution by decomposing the formulated problem equivalently into two subproblems. With the optimized durations, we find a resource-limited region where the QoE increases rapidly with configured resources, and a prediction-limited region where the QoE can be improved more efficiently with a better predictor. Simulation results using three existing predictors and a real dataset validate the analysis and demonstrate the gain from the joint optimization over non-optimized counterparts.

ARTrackV2: Prompting Autoregressive Tracker Where to Look and How to Describe

We present ARTrackV2, which integrates two pivotal aspects of tracking: determining where to look (localization) and how to describe (appearance analysis) the target object across video frames. Building on the foundation of its predecessor, ARTrackV2 extends the concept by introducing a unified generative framework to "read out" object's trajectory and "retell" its appearance in an autoregressive manner. This approach fosters a time-continuous methodology that models the joint evolution of motion and visual features, guided by previous estimates. Furthermore, ARTrackV2 stands out for its efficiency and simplicity, obviating the less efficient intra-frame autoregression and hand-tuned parameters for appearance updates. Despite its simplicity, ARTrackV2 achieves state-of-the-art performance on prevailing benchmark datasets while demonstrating remarkable efficiency improvement. In particular, ARTrackV2 achieves AO score of 79.5\% on GOT-10k, and AUC of 86.1\% on TrackingNet while being $3.6 \times$ faster than ARTrack. The code will be released.

RKKY signals characterizing the topological phase transitions in Floquet Dirac semimetals

Recently, the Floquet ${\rm Na_3Bi}$-type material has been proposed as an ideal platform for realizing various phases, i.e., the spin-degenerate Dirac semimetal (DSM) can be turned into the Weyl semimetal (WSM), and even to the Weyl half-metal (WHM). Instead of the conventional electrical methods, we use the RKKY interaction to characterize the topological phase transitions in this paper. It is found that detecting the Ising term $J_I$ is feasible for distinguishing the phase transition of DSM/WSM, since the emergence of $J_I$ is induced by the broken spin degeneracy. For the case with impurities deposited on $z$ axis (the line connecting the Weyl points), the Heisenberg term $J_H$ coexists with $J_I$ in the WSM, while $J_H$ is filtered out and only $J_I$ survives in the WHM. This magnetic filtering effect is a reflection of the fully spin-polarized property (one spin band is in the WSM phase while the other is gapped) of the WHM, and it can act a signal to capture the phase transition of WSM/WHM. This signal can not be disturbed unless the direction of the impurities greatly deviates from $z$ axis. Interestingly, as the impurities are moved into the $x$-$y$ plane, there arises another signal (a dip structure for $J_H$ at the phase boundary), which can also identify the phase transition of WSM/WHM. Furthermore, we have verified that all magnetic signals are robust to the term that breaks the electron-hole symmetry. Besides characterizing the phase transitions, our results also suggest that the Floquet DSMs are power platforms for controlling the magnetic interaction.

An accretion disc with magnetic outflows triggered by a sudden mass accretion event in changing-look active galactic nucleus 1ES 1927+654

1ES 1927+654 was known as a type 2 Seyfert galaxy, which exhibited drastic variability recently in ultraviolet (UV)/optical and X-ray bands. An UV/optical outburst was observed in the end of 2017, and it reached the peak luminosity $\sim 50$ days later. The high-cadence observations showed a rapid X-ray flux decline with complete disappearance of the power-law hard X-ray component when the soft X-ray thermal emission reached its lowest level about $150$ days after the UV/optical peak. The power law X-ray component reappeared with thermal X-ray emission brightening from its lowest flux within next $\sim$ 100~days. We assume an episodic accretion event taking place in the outer region of the disc surrounding a central black hole (BH), which is probably due to a red giant star tidally disrupted by the BH. The inner thin disc with corona is completely swept by the accretion event when the gas reaches the innermost circular stable orbit. The field threading the disrupted star is dragged inwards by the disc formed after the tidal disruption event, which accelerates outflows from the disc. The disc dimmed since a large fraction of the energy released in the disc is tapped into the outflows. The accretion rate of the episodic accretion event declines, and ultimately it turns out to be a thin disc, which is inefficient for field advection, and the outflows are switched off. A thin disc with corona reappears later after the outburst.

Knowledge Restore and Transfer for Multi-label Class-Incremental Learning

Current class-incremental learning research mainly focuses on single-label classification tasks while multi-label class-incremental learning (MLCIL) with more practical application scenarios is rarely studied. Although there have been many anti-forgetting methods to solve the problem of catastrophic forgetting in class-incremental learning, these methods have difficulty in solving the MLCIL problem due to label absence and information dilution. In this paper, we propose a knowledge restore and transfer (KRT) framework for MLCIL, which includes a dynamic pseudo-label (DPL) module to restore the old class knowledge and an incremental cross-attention(ICA) module to save session-specific knowledge and transfer old class knowledge to the new model sufficiently. Besides, we propose a token loss to jointly optimize the incremental cross-attention module. Experimental results on MS-COCO and PASCAL VOC datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method for improving recognition performance and mitigating forgetting on multi-label class-incremental learning tasks.

MachMap: End-to-End Vectorized Solution for Compact HD-Map Construction

This report introduces the 1st place winning solution for the Autonomous Driving Challenge 2023 - Online HD-map Construction. By delving into the vectorization pipeline, we elaborate an effective architecture, termed as MachMap, which formulates the task of HD-map construction as the point detection paradigm in the bird-eye-view space with an end-to-end manner. Firstly, we introduce a novel map-compaction scheme into our framework, leading to reducing the number of vectorized points by 93% without any expression performance degradation. Build upon the above process, we then follow the general query-based paradigm and propose a strong baseline with integrating a powerful CNN-based backbone like InternImage, a temporal-based instance decoder and a well-designed point-mask coupling head. Additionally, an extra optional ensemble stage is utilized to refine model predictions for better performance. Our MachMap-tiny with IN-1K initialization achieves a mAP of 79.1 on the Argoverse2 benchmark and the further improved MachMap-huge reaches the best mAP of 83.5, outperforming all the other online HD-map construction approaches on the final leaderboard with a distinct performance margin (> 9.8 mAP at least).

Deep Dynamic Scene Deblurring from Optical Flow

Deblurring can not only provide visually more pleasant pictures and make photography more convenient, but also can improve the performance of objection detection as well as tracking. However, removing dynamic scene blur from images is a non-trivial task as it is difficult to model the non-uniform blur mathematically. Several methods first use single or multiple images to estimate optical flow (which is treated as an approximation of blur kernels) and then adopt non-blind deblurring algorithms to reconstruct the sharp images. However, these methods cannot be trained in an end-to-end manner and are usually computationally expensive. In this paper, we explore optical flow to remove dynamic scene blur by using the multi-scale spatially variant recurrent neural network (RNN). We utilize FlowNets to estimate optical flow from two consecutive images in different scales. The estimated optical flow provides the RNN weights in different scales so that the weights can better help RNNs to remove blur in the feature spaces. Finally, we develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) to restore the sharp images from the deblurred features. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations on the benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of accuracy, speed, and model size.

Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Resource Management in SWIPT Enabled Cellular Networks with H2H/M2M Co-Existence

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication is crucial in developing Internet of Things (IoT). As it is well known that cellular networks have been considered as the primary infrastructure for M2M communications, there are several key issues to be addressed in order to deploy M2M communications over cellular networks. Notably, the rapid growth of M2M traffic dramatically increases energy consumption, as well as degrades the performance of existing Human-to-Human (H2H) traffic. Sustainable operation technology and resource management are efficacious ways for solving these issues. In this paper, we investigate a resource management problem in cellular networks with H2H/M2M coexistence. First, considering the energy-constrained nature of machine type communication devices (MTCDs), we propose a novel network model enabled by simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), which empowers MTCDs with the ability to simultaneously perform energy harvesting (EH) and information decoding. Given the diverse characteristics of IoT devices, we subdivide MTCDs into critical and tolerable types, further formulating the resource management problem as an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem under divers Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints. Then, we develop a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based scheme to solve this problem. It provides optimal spectrum, transmit power and power splitting (PS) ratio allocation policies, along with efficient model training under designed behaviour-tracking based state space and common reward function. Finally, we verify that with a reasonable training mechanism, multiple M2M agents successfully work cooperatively in a distributed way, resulting in network performance that outperforms other intelligence approaches in terms of convergence speed and meeting the EE and QoS requirements.
