LUCSS: Language-based User-customized Colourization of Scene Sketches

We introduce LUCSS, a language-based system for interactive col- orization of scene sketches, based on their semantic understanding. LUCSS is built upon deep neural networks trained via a large-scale repository of scene sketches and cartoon-style color images with text descriptions. It con- sists of three sequential modules. First, given a scene sketch, the segmenta- tion module automatically partitions an input sketch into individual object instances. Next, the captioning module generates the text description with spatial relationships based on the instance-level segmentation results. Fi- nally, the interactive colorization module allows users to edit the caption and produce colored images based on the altered caption. Our experiments show the effectiveness of our approach and the desirability of its compo- nents to alternative choices.

A cryofuge for cold-collision experiments with slow polar molecules

Ultracold molecules represent a fascinating research frontier in physics and chemistry, but it has proven challenging to prepare dense samples at low velocities. Here we present a solution to this goal by a non-conventional approach dubbed cryofuge. It employs centrifugal force to bring cryogenically cooled molecules to kinetic energies below $1\,$K$\times k_B$ in the laboratory frame, with corresponding fluxes exceeding $10^{10}$/s at velocities below $20\,$m/s. By attaining densities higher than $10^9$/cm$^3$ and interaction times longer than $25\,$ms in samples of fluoromethane as well as deuterated ammonia, we observe cold dipolar collisions between molecules and determine their collision cross sections.

Notes on holographic Schwinger effect

We use the method of evaluating the decay rate in terms of the imaginary part of a probe brane action to study the holographic Schwinger effect. In the confining D3-branes case, we find that the Schwinger effect occurs at energy scales higher than the Kaluza-Klein mass, indicating the absence of such effect when the dual gauge field theory can be regarded as an 2+1 dimensional theory. This property is independent of the configuration of the probe brane. In the case of D3-branes with a B field dual to a noncommutative super Yang-Mills theory, we study how the decay rate is affected by the noncommutative effect.

Holographic entanglement entropy and thermodynamic instability of planar R-charged black holes

The holographic entanglement entropy of an infinite strip subsystem on the asymptotic AdS boundary is used as a probe to study the thermodynamic instabilities of planar R-charged black holes (or their dual field theories). We focus on the single-charge AdS black holes in $D=5$, which correspond to spinning D3-branes with one non-vanishing angular momentum. Our results show that the holographic entanglement entropy indeed exhibits the thermodynamic instability associated with the divergence of the specific heat. When the width of the strip is large enough, the finite part of the holographic entanglement entropy as a function of the temperature resembles the thermal entropy, as is expected. As the width becomes smaller, however, the two entropies behave differently. In particular, there exists a critical value for the width of the strip, below which the finite part of the holographic entanglement entropy as a function of the temperature develops a self-intersection. We also find similar behavior in the single-charge black holes in $D=4$ and $7$.

Synthesis and optical properties of large-scale single-crystalline two-dimensional semiconductor WS2 monolayer from chemical vapor deposition

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), especially MoS2 and WS2 recently attract extensive attentions due to their rich physics and great potential applications. Superior to graphene, MS2 (M = Mo/W) monolayers have a native direct energy gap in visible frequency range. This promises great future of MS2 for optoelectronics. To exploit properties and further develop more applications, producing large-scale single crystals of MS2 by a facile method is highly demanded. Here, we report the synthesis of large-scale triangular single crystals of WS2 monolayer from a chemical vapor deposition process and systematic optical studies of such WS2 monolayers. The observations of high yield of light emission and valley-selective circular dichroism experimentally evidence the high optical quality of the WS2 monolayers. This work paves the road to fabricate large-scale single crystalline 2D semiconductors and study their fundamentals. It must be very meaningful for exploiting great potentials of WS2 for future optoelectronics.

Massless Scalar Field Vacuum in de Sitter Spacetime

As a spacetime with compact spatial sections, de Sitter spacetime does not have a de Sitter-invariant ground state for a minimally-coupled massless scalar field that gives definite expectation values for any observables not invariant under constant shifts of the field. However, if one restricts to observables that are shift invariant, as the action is, then there is a unique vacuum state. Here we calculate the shift-invariant four-point function that is the vacuum expectation value of the product of the difference of the field values at one pair of points and of the difference of the field values at a second pair of points. We show that this vacuum expectation value obeys a cluster-decomposition property of vanishing in the limit that the one pair of points is moved arbitrarily far from the other pair. We also calculate the shift-invariant correlation of the gradient of the scalar field at two different points and show that it also obeys a cluster-decomposition property. Possible relevance to a putative de Sitter-invariant quantum state for gravity is discussed.

Reconstructing f(R) theory according to holographic dark energy

In this paper a connection between the holographic dark energy model and the $f(R)$ theory is established. We treat the $f(R)$ theory as an effective description for the holographic dark energy and reconstruct the function $f(R)$ with the parameter $c>1$, $c=1$ and $c<1$, respectively. We show the distinctive behavior of each cases realized in $f(R)$ theory, especially for the future evolution.

Dynamics of holographic vacuum energy in the DGP model

We consider the evolution of the vacuum energy in the DGP model according to the holographic principle under the assumption that the relation linking the IR and UV cut-offs still holds in this scenario. The model is studied when the IR cut-off is chosen to be the Hubble scale $H^{-1}$, the particle horizon $R_{\rm ph}$ and the future event horizon $R_{\rm eh}$, respectively. And the two branches of the DGP model are also taken into account. Through numerical analysis, we find that in the cases of $H^{-1}$ in the (+) branch and $R_{\rm eh}$ in both branches, the vacuum energy can play the role of dark energy. Moreover, when considering the combination of the vacuum energy and the 5D gravity effect in both branches, the equation of state of the effective dark energy may cross -1, which may lead to the Big Rip singularity. Besides, we constrain the model with the Type Ia supernovae and baryon oscillation data and find that our model is consistent with current data within $1σ$, and that the observations prefer either a pure holographic dark energy or a pure DGP model

Limits from Weak Gravity Conjecture on Dark Energy Models

The weak gravity conjecture has been proposed as a criterion to distinguish the landscape from the swampland in string theory. As an application in cosmology of this conjecture, we use it to impose theoretical constraint on parameters of two types of dark energy models. Our analysis indicates that the Chaplygin-gas-type models realized in quintessence field are in the swampland, whereas the $a$ power-low decay model of the variable cosmological constant can be viable but the parameters are tightly constrained by the conjecture.

Observational Constraints on Agegraphic Dark Energy

In this paper, we use the Type Ia supernova data as well as the CMB and LSS data to constrain the agegraphic dark energy model recently proposed by Cai. Due to its peculiar nature, the parameter $n$ of this model cannot be well constrained by the SNIa data, while the other parameter $Ω_{m0}$ can be constrained to be $0.34\pm0.04$. When combined with CMB and LSS data, the range of $1σ$ confidence level for $n$ is greatly narrowed, albeit still very large. The best fit result is $Ω_{m0}=0.28\pm0.02$, which is consistent with most observations like WMAP and SDSS, and $n=3.4$, of which a meaningful range of confidence level can not be obtained due to the fact that the contours are not closed. Despite of this result, we conclude that for $n>1$ this model is consistent with SNIa, CMB and LSS observations. Furthermore, the fitting results indicate a generalized definition for the agegraphic dark energy.

Age constraints on the Agegraphic Dark Energy Model

We investigate the age constraint on the agegraphic dark energy model by using two old galaxies (LBDS 53W091 and LBDS 53W069) and the old high redshift quasar APM 08279+5255. We find that the agegraphic dark energy model can easily accommodate LBDS 53W091 and LBDS 53W069. To accommodate APM 08279+5255, one can take the reduced Hubble parameter as large as h=0.64, when the fraction matter energy density $Ω_{m0}\approx 0.22$.
