Comparison of phase change process in Si-GST hybrid integrated waveguide and MMI devices

In the past decades, silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have been considered as a promising approach to solve the bandwidth bottleneck in optical communications and interconnections. Despite significant advances, large-scale PICs still face a series of technical challenges, such as footprint, power consumption, and routing state storage, resulting from the active tuning methods used to control the optical waves. These challenges can be partially addressed by combining chalcogenide phase change materials (PCMs) such as Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) with silicon photonics, especially applicable in switching applications due to the nonvolatile nature of the GST. Although GST phase transitions between amorphous and crystalline states actuated by optical and electrical pulses heating have been experimentally demonstrated, there is no direct comparison between them. We carried out simulations and experiments to systematically investigate the difference in the phase change process induced by optical and electrical pulses for two types of Si-GST hybrid waveguides. For the phase transition induced by optical pulses, the device has a clear advantage in terms of power consumption and operation speed. For the phase transition induced by electrical pulses, the device is suitable for large-scale integration because it does not require complex light routing. It helps us better understand the phase change process and push forward the further development of Si-GST hybrid integration platform, bringing in new potential applications.

Digital Quadruplets for Cyber-Physical-Social Systems based Parallel Driving: From Concept to Applications

Digital quadruplets aiming to improve road safety, traffic efficiency, and driving cooperation for future connected automated vehicles are proposed with the enlightenment of ACP based parallel driving. The ACP method denotes Artificial societies, Computational experiments, and Parallel execution modules for cyber-physical-social systems. Four agents are designed in the framework of digital quadruplets: descriptive vehicles, predictive vehicles, prescriptive vehicles, and real vehicles. The three virtual vehicles (descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive) dynamically interact with the real one in order to enhance the safety and performance of the real vehicle. The details of the three virtual vehicles in the digital quadruplets are described. Then, the interactions between the virtual and real vehicles are presented. The experimental results of the digital quadruplets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Number Parity effect in the normal state of $SrTiO_3$

We study the recently discovered even-odd effects in the normal state of single-electron devices manufactured at strontium titanium oxide/lanthanum aluminum oxide interfaces (STO/LAO). Within the framework of the number parity-projected formalism and a phenomenological fermion-boson model we find that, in sharp contrast to conventional superconductors, the crossover temperature $T^*$ for the onset of number parity effect is considerably larger than the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ due to the existence of a pairing gap above $T_c$. Furthermore, the finite lifetime of the preformed pairs reduces by several orders of magnitude the effective number of states $N_{\rm eff}$ available for the unpaired quasiparticle in the odd parity state of the Coulomb blockaded STO/LAO island. Our findings are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results reported by Levy and coworkers for STO/LAO based single electron devices.

The gamma-ray and Optical Variability Analysis of the BL Lac Object 3FGL J0449.4-4350

We have assembled the historical light curves of the BL Lac Object 3FGL J0449.4-4350 at optical and gamma-ray bands, the time spanning about 10 years, analyzed the periodic variability of the light curves by using four different methods (Lomb-Scargle periodogram, REDFIT38, Jurkevich and DACF). We detected a marginally possible quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of ~450 days. Assuming it originates from the helical motion jet in a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system undergoing major merger, we estimate the primary black hole mass M~7.7*10^{9} M_sun. To explore the origin of the gamma-ray, we investigated the optical-gamma-ray correlations using discrete correlation function (DCF) method, and found that the correlation between the two bands is very significant. This strong correlation tends to imply lepton self-synchro-Compton (LSSC) model to produce the gamma-ray.

A possible mechanism of the lifetime effects of electron pairs at the $SrTiO_3/LaTiO_3$ interface

The lifetime effects of the electron pairs are supposed to be responsible for the atypical behavior of the single electron transistors manufactured at the strontium titanate/ lanthanum aluminate (STO/LAO) interface. In addition, as shown in Richter's experiments, the energy gap $Δ$ should persist above the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. In order to explain the experiments, the present paper attempts to associate the phonon-electron interactions to the mechanism of the formation and decay of the electron pairs. Moreover, through employing the boson fermion model that includes two superconducting mechanisms, we reproduce the step-like $Δ-T_c$ relations with the energy gap $Δ$ remaining finite above $T_c$. The results are roughly consistent with the experiments. The newly-introduced models and formalism may be helpful in describing superconductors with lifetime effects and a finite energy gap $Δ$ above $T_c$.

Confirmed short periodic variability of subparsec supermassive binary black hole candidate Mrk 231

Here we confirm the short periodic variability of a subparsec supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) candidate Mrk 231 in the extended optical photometric data set collected by the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS) and All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). Using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and 2DHybrid method, we detected the significant periodicity of ~ 1.1 yr beyond a damped random walk model in the CRTS+ASAS-SN optical data set. Mrk 231 has been previously proposed as a SMBBH candidate with a highly unequal mass ratio (q~ 0.03), very tight mutual separation of ~590 AU, and an orbital period of ~1.2 yr. Hence, our result further supports, even though not prove, the intriguing hypothesis that SMBBHs with low mass ratios may be more common than close-equal mass SMBBHs. This result, however, was obtained from the contribution of CRTS data with limited sampling cadence and photometric accuracy, and further monitoring of Mrk 231 is crucial to confirm the periodicity.

Possible phason-polaron effect on purely one dimensional charge order of Mo6Se6 nanowires

In one-dimensional (1D) metallic systems, the diverging electron susceptibility and electron-phonon coupling collaboratively drive the electrons into a charge density wave (CDW) state. However, strictly 1D system is unstable against perturbations, whose effect on CDW order requires clarification ideally with altered coupling to surroundings. Here, we fabricate such a system with nanowires of Mo6Se6 bundles, which are either attached to edges of monolayer MoSe2 or isolated freely, by post-annealing the preformed MoSe2. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we visualized charge modulations and CDW gaps with prominent coherent peaks in the edge-attached nanowires. Astonishingly, the CDW order becomes suppressed in the isolated nanowires, showing CDW correlation gaps without coherent peaks. The contrasting behavior, as revealed with theoretical modeling, is interpreted as the effect of phason-polarons on the 1D CDW state. Our work elucidates a possibly unprecedented many body effect that may be generic to strictly 1D system but undermined in quasi-1D system.

Observation of topological states residing at step edges of WTe2

Topological states emerge at the boundary of solids as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the bulk. Recently, theory predicts a topological edge state on single layer transition metal dichalcogenides with 1T' structure. However, its existence still lacks experimental proof. Here, we report the direct observations of the topological states at the step edge of WTe2 by spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy. A one-dimensional electronic state residing at the step edge of WTe2 is observed, which has a spatial extension of about 2.5 nm. First principles calculations rigorously verify the edge state has a topological origin, and its topological nature is unaffected by the presence of the substrate. Our study supports the existence of topological edge states in 1T'-WTe2, which may envision in-depth study of its topological physics and device applications.

Liquid dispensing and writing by a nano-grooved pin

Liquid dispensing and writing in the extremely small size regime are important for applications in many current technologies, such as micro/nano fabrication, biological/chemical patterning and analysis, and drug discovery. Most of current dispensing/writing methods can be sorted into a category of liquid flowing through tiny tubes or nozzles that requires inputting an impulse energy, which leads to complex procedures, expensive equipment and narrow material applicability, especially for biomaterials. Here, we report a method that may lead to a new category: liquid flows over the tapered surface of a pin with longitudinal nano grooves on the surface to uninterruptedly perform droplet dispensing and direct writing. The dispensed droplet diameters were controllable from several microns down to 150 nm, and the written line heights were as low as 5 nm. The mechanism underlying automatic liquid storage on conical surface and spontaneous liquid transport through nano grooves is revealed and well modeled by a simple relationship. Furthermore, the nano-grooved pins are much simpler and cheaper in fabrication than nanoscale tubes and nozzles, and pins have much depressed clogging problems that are typically troublesome for tubes and nozzles. Our new strategy may constitute a basis for creating liquid dispensing/writing technologies that are simultaneously smaller, simpler, faster and applicable for more types of materials.
