Surface solitons in PT symmetric potentials

We investigate light beam propagation along the interface between linear and nonlinear media with parity-time PT symmetry, and derive an equation governing the beam propagation. A novel class of two-dimensional PT surface solitons are found analytically and numerically, and checked to be stable over a wide range of PT potential structures and parameters. These surface solitons do not require a power threshold. The transverse power flow across beam is examined within the solitons and found to be caused by the nontrivial phase structure of the solitons. PT surface solitons are possibly observed experimentally in photorefractive crystals.

Stable surface solitons in truncated complex potentials

We show that surface solitons in the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with truncated complex periodic potential can be stabilized by linear homogeneous losses, which are necessary to balance gain in the near-surface channel arising from the imaginary part of potential. Such solitons become stable attractors when the strength of homogeneous losses acquires values from a limited interval and they exist in focusing and defocusing media. The domains of stability of surface solitons shrink with increase of the amplitude of imaginary part of complex potential.

Nonlocal gap solitons in parity-time symmetric optical lattices

We numerically study the nonlocal gap solitons in parity-time (PT) symmetric optical lattices built into a nonlocal self-focusing medium. We state the existence, stability, and propagation dynamics of such PT gap solitons in detail. Simulated results show that there exist stable gap soltions. The influences of the degree of nonlocality on the soliton power, the energy flow density and the stable region of the PT gap solitons are also examined.

Fano Resonances of Plasmonic Nanodisk

The Fano resonance of a single symmetry broken Ag nanodisk under a normal incidence was investigated by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The asymmetry line shape of the Fano resonance was controlled by modifying the open angle of the nanodisk, and this Fano splitting was demonstrated as the result of the overlap between the broad dipolar and narrow quadrupolar modes, which could be strengthened by enlarging the radius of the nanodisk. A semi-analytical method was developed to calculate the plasmon hybridization, which was used to analyze the sub-process of the quadru Fano resonance. With the good agreement between theoretical calculations and FDTD simulations, the suggested method provides a way to investigate and control the Fano resonance inside a single planar nanostructure, and can be applied to the future high-performance Fano resonance sensors.
