The NLO fragmentation functions of heavy quarks into heavy quarkonia

In the paper, we derive the next-to-leading order (NLO) fragmentation function for a heavy quark, either charm or bottom, into a heavy quarkonium $J/Ψ$ or $Υ$. The ultra-violet divergences in the real corrections are removed through the operator renormalization, which is performed under the modified minimal subtraction scheme. We then obtain the NLO fragmentation function at an initial factorization scale, e.g. $μ_{F}=3 m_c$ for $c\to J/Ψ$ and $μ_{F}=3m_b$ for $b\to Υ$, which can be evolved to any scale via the use of Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation. As an initial application of those fragmentation functions, we study the $J/Ψ$ ($Υ$) production at a high luminosity $e^+e^-$ collider which runs at the energy around the $Z$ pole and could be a suitable platform for testing the fragmentation function.

Thrust Distribution in Electron-Positron Annihilation using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

We present a comprehensive and self-consistent analysis for the thrust distribution by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). By absorbing all nonconformal terms into the running coupling using PMC via renormalization group equation, the scale in the running coupling shows the correct physical behavior and the correct number of active flavors is determined. The resulting PMC predictions agree with the precise measurements for both the thrust differential distributions and the thrust mean values. Moreover, we provide a new remarkable way to determine the running of the coupling constant $α_s(Q^2)$ from the measurement of the jet distributions in electron-positron annihilation at a single given value of the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$.

Production of doubly heavy baryons via Higgs boson decays

We systematically analyzed the production of semi-inclusive doubly heavy baryons ($Ξ_{cc}$, $Ξ_{bc}$ and $Ξ_{bb}$) for the process $H^0 \rightarrow Ξ_{QQ'}+ \bar {Q'} + \bar {Q}$ through four main Higgs decay channels within the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The contributions from the intermediate diquark states, $\langle cc\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{6}}$, $\langle cc\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}}$, $\langle bc\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bc\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bb\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{6}}$ and $\langle bb\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}}$, have been taken into consideration. The differential distributions and three main sources of the theoretical uncertainties have been discussed. At the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, there will be about 0.43$\times10^4$ events of $Ξ_{cc}$, 6.32$\times10^4$ events of $Ξ_{bc}$ and 0.28$\times10^4$ events of $Ξ_{bb}$ produced per year. There are fewer events produced at the Circular Electron Positron Collider and the International Linear Collider, about $0.26\times 10^{2}$ events of $Ξ_{cc}$, $3.83\times 10^{2}$ events of $Ξ_{bc}$ and $0.17\times 10^{2}$ events of $Ξ_{bb}$ in operation.

Extending the Predictive Power of Perturbative QCD

The predictive power of perturbative QCD (pQCD) depends on two important issues: (1) how to eliminate the renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities at fixed order, and (2) how to reliably estimate the contributions of unknown higher-order terms using information from the known pQCD series. The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) satisfies all of the principles of the renormalization group and eliminates the scheme-and-scale ambiguities by the recursive use of the renormalization group equation to determine the scale of the QCD running coupling $α_s$ at each order. Moreover, the resulting PMC predictions are independent of the choice of the renormalization scheme, satisfying the key principle of renormalization group invariance. In this letter, we show that by using the conformal series derived using the PMC single-scale procedure, in combination with the Padé Approximation Approach (PAA), one can achieve quantitatively useful estimates for the unknown higher-order terms from the known perturbative series. We illustrate this procedure for three hadronic observables $R_{e^+e^-}$, $R_τ$, and $Γ(H \to b \bar{b})$ which are each known to 4 loops in pQCD. We show that if the PMC prediction for the conformal series for an observable (of leading order $α_s^p$) has been determined at order $α^n_s$, then the $[N/M]=[0/n-p]$ Padé series provides quantitatively useful predictions for the higher-order terms. We also show that the PMC + PAA predictions agree at all orders with the fundamental, scheme-independent Generalized Crewther relations which connect observables, such as deep inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering, to hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Thus, by using the combination of the PMC series and the Padé method, the predictive power of pQCD theory can be greatly improved.

Production of semi-inclusive doubly heavy baryons via top-quark decays

In the paper, we present a detailed discussion on the semi-inclusive production of doubly heavy baryons ($Ξ_{bc}$ and $Ξ_{bb}$) through top-quark decay channel, $t\rightarrow Ξ_{bQ^{\prime}}+ \bar {Q^{\prime}} + W^+ $, within the framework of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). In our calculations, the contributions from the intermediate diquark states, $\langle bc\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bc\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bb\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{6}}$ and $\langle bb\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}}$, have been taken into consideration. Main uncertainties from the heavy quark mass $(m_c,~m_b~\mbox{or}~m_t)$, the renormalization scale $μ_r$, and the nonperturbative transition probability have been estimated. For a comparison, we also analyze the production of doubly heavy baryons under the approximate fragmentation function approach. Estimated at the LHC or a High Luminosity LHC with $\mathcal{L}$ =$10^{34-36}~\rm{cm}^{-2}~\rm{s}^{-1}$, there will be about $2.25\times10^{4-6}$ events of $Ξ_{bc}$ and $9.49\times10^{2-4}$ events of $Ξ_{bb}$ produced in one operation year through top-quark decays.

Properties of the decay $H\toγγ$ using the approximate $α_s^4$-corrections and the principle of maximum conformality

The Higgs boson decay channel, $H\toγγ$, is one of the most important channels for probing the properties of the Higgs boson. In the paper, we reanalyze its decay width by using the QCD corrections up to $α_s^4$-order level. The principle of maximum conformality has been adopted to achieve a precise pQCD prediction without conventional renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities. By taking the Higgs mass as the one given by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, i.e. $M_{H}=125.09\pm0.21\pm0.11$ GeV, we obtain $Γ(H\to γγ)|_{\rm LHC}=9.364^{+0.076}_{-0.075}$ KeV.

The $B \to ρ$ helicity form factors within the QCD light-cone sum rules

We study the $B \to ρ$ helicity form factors (HFFs) by applying the light-cone sum rules up to twist-4 accuracy. The HFF has some advantages in comparison to the conventionally calculated transition form factors, such as the HFF parameterization can be achieved via diagonalizable unitarity relations and etc. At the large recoil point, only the $ρ$-meson longitudinal component contributes to the HFFs, and we have $\mathcal{H}_{ρ,0}(0)=0.435^{+0.055}_{-0.045}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{ρ,\{1,2\}}(0)\equiv 0$. We extrapolate the HFFs to physically allowable $q^2$-region and apply them to the $B \to ρ$ semileptonic decay. We observe that the $ρ$-meson longitudinal component dominates its differential decay width in low $q^2$-region, and its transverse component dominates the high $q^2$-region. Two ratios $R_{\rm low}$ and $R_{\rm high}$ are used to characterize those properties, and our LCSR calculation gives, $R_{\rm low}=0.967^{+0.305}_{-0.284}$ and $R_{\rm high}=0.219^{+0.058}_{-0.070}$, which agree with the BaBar measurements within errors.

Exclusive production of $J/ψ+η_c$ at the $B$ factories Belle and Babar using the principle of maximum conformality

We predict the rate for exclusive double-charmonium production in electron-positron annihilation $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+η_c$ using perturbative quantum chromodynamics and the NRQCD framework for hard, heavy-quarkonium exclusive processes. The cross sections measured at the $B$-factories Belle and Babar at $\sqrt{s}=10.6$ GeV disagree with the pQCD leading-order predictions by an order of magnitude. The predictions at next-to-leading order are, however, very sensitive to the choice of the renormalization scale, resulting in an apparent discrepancy between the theoretical prediction and the data. We show that this discrepancy can in fact be eliminated by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) to set the renormalization scale. ... By carefully applying the PMC to different topologies of the annihilation process, one achieves precise pQCD predictions, together with improved perturbative convergence. We also observe that the single-photon-fragmentation QED correction is important, an effect which increases the total cross-section by about $10\%$. The scale-fixed, scheme-independent cross-section predicted by the PMC is $σ_{\rm tot}|_{\rm PMC}=20.35 ^{+3.5}_{-3.8}$ fb, where the uncertainties come from the squared average of the errors due to the value of the charm mass and the uncertainty from the quarkonium wavefunctions at the origin. We find that the typical momentum flow of the process is $2.30$ GeV, which explains the guessed choice of $2-3$ GeV using conventional scale-setting. The scale-fixed $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+η_c$ cross-section predicted by the PMC shows excellent agreement with the Belle and Babar measurements, emphasizing the importance of a rigorous renormalization scale-setting procedure.

Hadronic production of the doubly charmed baryon via the proton-nucleus and the nucleus-nucleus collisions at the RHIC and LHC

We present a detailed discussion on the doubly charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}$ production at the RHIC and LHC via the proton-nucleus ($p$-N) and nucleus-nucleus (N-N) collision modes. The extrinsic charm mechanism via the subprocesses $g+c\to (cc)[n]+\bar{c}$ and $c+c\to (cc)[n]+g$ together with the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism via the subprocess $g+g\to(cc)[n]+\bar{c}+\bar{c}$ have been taken into consideration, where the intermediate diquark is in $[n]=[^1S_0]_{\bf 6}$-state or $[^3S_1]_{\bar{\bf 3}}$-state, respectively. Total and differential cross sections have been discussed under various collision energies. To compare with the $Ξ_{cc}$ production via proton-proton collision mode at the LHC, we observe that sizable $Ξ_{cc}$ events can also be generated via $p$-N and N-N collision modes at the RHIC and LHC. For examples, about $8.1\times10^7$ and $6.7\times10^7$ $Ξ_{cc}$ events can be accumulated in $p$-Pb and Pb-Pb collision modes at the LHC within one operation year.

The Ratio $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and the $D$-meson Distribution Amplitude

In this paper, we calculate the $B\to D$ transition form factors (TFFs) within the light-cone sum rules (LCSR) and predict the ratio $\mathcal{R}(D)$. More accurate $D$-meson distribution amplitudes (DAs) are essential to get a more accurate theoretical prediction. We construct a new model for the twist-3 DAs $ϕ^p_{3;D}$ and $ϕ^σ_{3;D}$ based on the QCD sum rules under the background field theory for their moments as we have done for constructing the leading-twist DA $ϕ_{2;D}$. As an application, we observe that the twist-3 contributions are sizable in whole $q^2$-region. Taking the twist-2 and twist-3 DAs into consideration, we obtain $f^{B\to D}_{+,0}(0) = 0.659^{+0.029}_{-0.032}$. As a combination of the Lattice QCD and the QCD LCSR predictions on the TFFs $f^{B\to D}_{+,0}(q^2)$, we predict $\mathcal{R}(D) = 0.320^{+0.018}_{-0.021}$, which improves is about $1.5σ$ deviation from the HFAG average of the Belle and BABAR data. At present the data are still of large errors, and we need further accurate measurements of the experiment to confirm whether there is signal of new physics from the ratio $\mathcal{R}(D)$.

The $B_c (B_c^*)$ meson production via the proton-nucleus and the nucleus-nucleus collision modes at the colliders RHIC and LHC

In the paper, we make a comprehensive study on the hadroproduction of the $B_c (B_c^*)$ meson via the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism at the RHIC and LHC colliders. Total and differential cross sections via the proton-nucleus ($p$-N) and nucleus-nucleus (N-N) collision modes have been discussed under various collision energies. To compare with those via the proton-proton collision mode at the LHC, we observe that sizable number of $B_c (B_c^*)$-meson events can also be produced via the $p$-N and N-N collision modes at the RHIC and LHC. If assuming the spin-triplet $B^*_c$ meson directly decays to the spin-singlet $B_c$ meson with $100\%$ probability, $1.2 \times 10^5$ and $4.7 \times 10^5$ $B_c$-meson events can be produced via the $p$-Au and Au-Au collision modes at the RHIC in one operation year; $5.8 \times 10^6$ and $4.6 \times 10^6$ $B_c$-meson events can be produced via the $p$-Pb and Pb-Pb collision modes at the LHC in one operation year.

Reanalysis of the Higgs-boson decay $H \to gg$ up to $α_s^6$-order level using the principle of maximum conformality

Using the newly available $α_s^6$-order QCD correction to the Higgs decay channel $H\to gg$, we make a detailed discussion on the perturbative properties of the decay width $Γ(H\to gg)$ by using the principle of maximum conformality (PMC). The PMC provides a way to eliminate the conventional renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities, which uses the renormalization group equation to determine the optimal running behavior of the strong coupling constant at each order via a recursive way. Even though there is no ambiguity for setting the renormalization scale, there is residual scale dependence for the PMC predictions due to unknown high-order terms. Using the $α_s^6$-order terms, the somewhat larger residual renormalization scale dependence at the $α_s^5$-order level observed in our previous work can be greatly suppressed, which shows $Γ(H\to gg)\rm{|_{ PMC }} =337.9 \pm1.7_{-0.1}^{+0.9}\pm1.9$ KeV, where the first error is caused by the Higgs mass uncertainty $ΔM_{H}=0.24$ GeV, the second one is the residual scale dependence by varying the initial choice of scale within the region of $\left[{M_H}/{2},4 M_H\right]$, and the third one is the conservative prediction of unknown high-order contributions.

A solution to the $γγ^*\rightarrowη_c$ puzzle using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

The next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) pQCD prediction for the $γγ^* \to η_c$ form factor was evaluated in 2015 using nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). A strong discrepancy between the NRQCD prediction and the BaBar measurements was observed. Until now there has been no solution for this puzzle. In this paper, we present a NNLO analysis by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) to set the renormalization scale. By carefully dealing with the light-by-light diagrams at the NNLO level, the resulting high precision PMC prediction agrees with the BaBar measurements within errors, and the conventional renormalization scale uncertainty is eliminated. The PMC is consistent with all of the requirements of the renormalization group, including scheme-independence. The application of the PMC thus provides a rigorous solution for the $γγ^* \to η_c$ form factor puzzle, emphasizing the importance of correct renormalization scale-setting. The results also support the applicability of NRQCD to hard exclusive processes involving charmonium.

A novel demonstration of the renormalization group invariance of the fixed-order predictions using the principle of maximum conformality and the $C$-scheme coupling

As a basic requirement of the renormalization group invariance, any physical observable must be independent of the choice of both the renormalization scheme and the initial renormalization scale. In this paper, we show that by using the newly suggested $C$-scheme coupling, one can obtain a demonstration that the {\it Principle of Maximum Conformality} prediction is scheme-independent to all-orders for any renormalization schemes, thus satisfying all of the conditions of the renormalization group invariance. We illustrate these features for the non-singlet Adler function and for $τ$ decay to $ν+$ hadrons at the four-loop level.

Properties of the Free Energy Density Using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

We present a detailed study on the properties of the free energy density at the high temperature by applying the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) scale-setting method within the effective field theory. The PMC utilizes the renormalization group equation recursively to identify the occurrence and pattern of the non-conformal $\{β_i\}$-terms, and determines the optimal renormalization scale at each order. Our analysis shows that a more accurate free energy density up to $g_s^5$-order level without renormalization scale dependence can be achieved by applying the PMC. We also observe that by using a smaller factorization scale around the effective parameter $m_E$, the PMC prediction shall be consistent with the Lattice QCD prediction derived at the low temperature.

A precise determination of the top-quark pole mass

The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) provides a systematic way to eliminate the renormalization scheme and renormalization scale uncertainties for high-energy processes. We have observed that by applying PMC scale-setting, one obtains comprehensive and self-consistent pQCD predictions for the top-quark pair total cross-section and the top-quark pair forward-backward asymmetry in agreement with the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC. As a step forward, in the present paper, we determine the top-quark pole mass via a detailed comparison of the top-quark pair cross-section with the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC. The results for the top-quark pole mass are $m_t=174.6^{+3.1}_{-3.2}$ GeV for the Tevatron with $\sqrt{S}=1.96$ TeV, $m_t=173.7\pm1.5$ GeV and $174.2\pm1.7$ GeV for the LHC with $\sqrt{S} = 7$ TeV and $8$ TeV, respectively. Those predictions agree with the average, $173.34\pm0.76$ GeV, obtained from various collaborations via direct measurements. The consistency of the pQCD predictions using the PMC with all of the collider measurements at different energies provides an important verification of QCD.

Renormalization scheme dependence of high-Order perturbative QCD predictions

Conventionally, one adopts typical momentum flow of a physical observable as the renormalization scale for its perturbative QCD (pQCD) approximant. This simple treatment leads to renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities due to the renormalization scheme and scale dependence of the strong coupling and the perturbative coefficients do not exactly cancel at any fixed order. It is believed that those ambiguities will be softened by including more higher-order terms. In the paper, to show how the renormalization scheme dependence changes when more loop terms have been included, we discuss the sensitivity of pQCD prediction on the scheme parameters by using the scheme-dependent $\{β_{m \geq 2}\}$-terms. We adopt two four-loop examples, $e^+ e^- \to {\rm hadrons}$ and $τ$ decays into hadrons, for detailed analysis. Our results show that under the conventional scale setting, by including more-and-more loop terms, the scheme dependence of the pQCD prediction cannot be reduced as efficiently as that of the scale dependence. Thus a proper scale-setting approach should be important to reduce the scheme dependence. We observe that the principle of minimum sensitivity could be such a scale-setting approach, which provides a practical way to achieve optimal scheme and scale by requiring the pQCD approximate be independent to the "unphysical" theoretical conventions.
