FrontierMat: Benchmarking Language Models at the Frontier of Materials R&D

To accelerate materials discovery, language models must be able to address problems at the research frontier. Yet textbook- and examination-derived benchmarks primarily assess established knowledge, leaving performance on frontier research problems largely untested. We introduce FrontierMat, a benchmark of 330 problems drawn from frontier academic and industrial research in fields including aerospace, semiconductors, embodied intelligence and nuclear fusion. Every problem is validated by leading experimentalists and industry experts in its field. Each problem presents a real study and asks the model to infer a withheld outcome or draw a conclusion from selected experimental evidence. Problems are annotated by functional domain, material system and the scale of the governing mechanism; 130 require cross-scale reasoning. The strongest general-purpose model scores only 53.7%, and on matched problems, cross-scale problems score 8.7 points below single-scale ones. Half of the problems are solved by at most one model, and models fail chiefly by endorsing what is plausible rather than what was observed. A domain-adaptation study with meta-weighted continued pretraining and scale-modular self-distillation raises an open-weight model from 36.7% to 55.4%, matching the strongest proprietary model, with improvements on public materials benchmarks and no decline in aggregate performance on general benchmarks. FrontierMat provides a testbed for measuring progress toward language models that support frontier materials R&D.

RollPlace: Improving Macro Placement via Monte Carlo Rollout Search

The application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) in Electronic Design Automation (EDA), particularly for chip placement, has attracted considerable attention in recent years. While existing machine learning (ML)-based approaches have achieved notable progress, they predominantly focus on generating optimal layouts in a single attempt, often producing solutions that require subsequent refinement. To address this limitation, we propose RollPlace, a novel and generalized macro placement framework. RollPlace adopts a two-stage optimization strategy: generating initial placement solutions via machine learning methods or heuristic-based strategies, and refining these layouts efficiently by adjusting specific macros derived from the initial stage. This strategy circumvents the sequential generation constraints inherent in traditional RL-based placement methods. Furthermore, RollPlace seamlessly integrates Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to balance exploration and exploitation, and employs a rollout mechanism for efficient local search. Extensive experiments on the ISPD 2005 benchmark demonstrate that RollPlace outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, end-to-end experimental results based on OpenROAD across 19 benchmarks show that RollPlace excels in multiple metrics. The proposed framework offers a robust and scalable solution for addressing the growing complexity of modern chip design challenges.

Coherent Manipulation with Resonant Excitation and Single Emitter Creation of Nitrogen Vacancy Centers in 4H Silicon Carbide

Silicon carbide (SiC) has become a key player in realization of scalable quantum technologies due to its ability to host optically addressable spin qubits and wafer-size samples. Here, we have demonstrated optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) with resonant excitation, and clearly identified the ground state energy levels of the NV centers in 4H-SiC. Coherent manipulation of NV centers in SiC has been achieved with Rabi and Ramsey oscillations. Finally, we show the successful generation and characterization of single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in SiC employing ion implantation. Our results are highlighting the key role of NV centers in SiC as a potential candidate for quantum information processing.

1T-FeS$_2$$:$ a new type of two-dimensional metallic ferromagnet

Discovery of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials is crucial for understanding the fundamentals of 2D magnetism and realizing next-generation magnetoelectronic and magneto-optical devices. Although significant efforts have been devoted to identifying 2D magnetism by exfoliating bulk magnetic layered materials, seldom studies are performed to synthesize ultra-thin magnetic materials directly for non-layered magnetic materials. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a new type of theoretically proposed 2D metallic ferromagnet 1T FeS2, through the molten-salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The long-range 2D ferromagnetic order is confirmed by the observation of a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and a hysteretic magnetoresistance. The experimentally detected out-of-plane ferromagnetic ordering is theoretically suported with Stoner criterion. Our findings open up new possibilities to search novel 2D ferromagnets in non-layered compounds and render opportunities for realizing realistic ultra-thin spintronic devices.

Bright room temperature single photon source at telecom range in cubic silicon carbide

Single photon emitters (SPEs) play an important role in a number of quantum information tasks such as quantum key distributions. In these protocols, telecom wavelength photons are desired due to their low transmission loss in optical fibers. In this paper, we present a study of bright single-photon emitters in cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) emitting in the telecom range. We find that these emitters are photostable and bright at room temperature with a count rate of ~ MHz. Together with the fact that SiC is a growth and fabrication-friendly material, our result may pave the way for its future application in quantum communication technology applications.
