A Hybrid Energy Harvesting Protocol for Cooperative NOMA: Error Performance Approach

Cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CNOMA) has recently been adapted with energy harvesting (EH) to increase energy efficiency and extend the lifetime of energy-constrained wireless networks. This paper proposes a hybrid EH protocol-assisted CNOMA, which is a combination of the two main existing EH protocols (power splitting (PS) and time switching (TS)). The end-to-end bit error rate (BER) expressions of users in the proposed scheme are obtained over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. The proposed hybrid EH (HEH) protocol is compared with the benchmark schemes (i.e., existing EH protocols and no EH). Based on the extensive simulations, we reveal that the analytical results match perfectly with simulations which proves the correctness of the derivations. Numerical results also show that the HEH-CNOMA outperforms the benchmarks significantly. In addition, we discuss the optimum value of EH factors to minimize the error probability in HEH-CNOMA and show that an optimum value can be obtained according to channel parameters.

Error Analysis of Cooperative NOMA with Practical Constraints: Hardware-Impairment, Imperfect SIC and CSI

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been a strong candidate to support massive connectivity in future wireless networks. In this regard, its implementation into cooperative relaying, named cooperative-NOMA (CNOMA), has received tremendous attention by researchers. However, most of the existing CNOMA studies have failed to address practical constraints since they assume ideal conditions. Particularly, error performance of CNOMA schemes with imperfections has not been investigated, yet. In this letter, we provide an analytical framework for error performance of CNOMA schemes under practical assumptions where we take into account imperfect successive interference canceler (SIC), imperfect channel estimation (ICSI), and hardware impairments (HWI) at the transceivers. We derive bit error rate (BER) expressions in CNOMA schemes whether the direct links between source and users exist or not which is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first study in the open literature. For comparisons, we also provide BER expression for downlink NOMA with practical constraints which has also not been given in literature, yet. The theoretical BER expressions are validated with computer simulations where the perfect-match is observed. Finally, we discuss the effects of the system parameters (e.g., power allocation, HWI level) on the performance of CNOMA schemes to reveal fruitful insights for the society.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for Backscatter Enhanced NOMA Cooperative V2X Communications under Imperfect CSI

Automotive-Industry 5.0 will use beyond fifth-generation (B5G) technologies to provide robust, computationally intelligent, and energy-efficient data sharing among various onboard sensors, vehicles, and other devices. Recently, ambient backscatter communications (AmBC) have gained significant interest in the research community for providing battery-free communications. AmBC can modulate useful data and reflect it towards near devices using the energy and frequency of existing RF signals. However, obtaining channel state information (CSI) for AmBC systems would be very challenging due to no pilot sequences and limited power. As one of the latest members of multiple access technology, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has emerged as a promising solution for connecting large-scale devices over the same spectral resources in B5G wireless networks. Under imperfect CSI, this paper provides a new optimization framework for energy-efficient transmission in AmBC enhanced NOMA cooperative vehicle-to-everything (V2X) networks. We simultaneously minimize the total transmit power of the V2X network by optimizing the power allocation at BS and reflection coefficient at backscatter sensors while guaranteeing the individual quality of services. The problem of total power minimization is formulated as non-convex optimization and coupled on multiple variables, making it complex and challenging. Therefore, we first decouple the original problem into two sub-problems and convert the nonlinear rate constraints into linear constraints. Then, we adopt the iterative sub-gradient method to obtain an efficient solution. For comparison, we also present a conventional NOMA cooperative V2X network without AmBC. Simulation results show the benefits of our proposed AmBC enhanced NOMA cooperative V2X network in terms of total achievable energy efficiency.

Backscatter Sensors Communication for 6G Low-powered NOMA-enabled IoT Networks under Imperfect SIC

The combination of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) using power-domain with backscatter sensor communication (BSC) is expected to connect a large-scale Internet of things (IoT) devices in future sixth-generation (6G) era. In this paper, we introduce a BSC in multi-cell IoT network, where a source in each cell transmits superimposed signal to its associated IoT devices using NOMA. The backscatter sensor tag (BST) also transmit data towards IoT devices by reflecting and modulating the superimposed signal of the source. A new optimization framework is provided that simultaneously optimizes the total power of each source, power allocation coefficient of IoT devices and reflection coefficient of BST under imperfect successive interference cancellation decoding. The objective of this work is to maximize the total energy efficiency of IoT network subject to quality of services of each IoT device. The problem is first transformed using the Dinkelbach method and then decoupled into two subproblems. The Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions and Lagrangian dual method are employed to obtain the efficient solutions. In addition, we also present the conventional NOMA network without BSC as a benchmark framework. Simulation results unveil the advantage of our considered NOMA BSC networks over the conventional NOMA network.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces based Cognitive Radio Networks

Over the last decade, cognitive radios (CRs) have emerged as a technology for improving spectrum efficiency through dynamic spectrum access techniques. More recently, as research interest is shifting beyond 5G communications, new technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as enablers of smart radio environments, to further improve signal coverage and spectrum management capabilities. Based on the promise of CRs and RISs, this paper seeks to investigate the concept of adopting both concepts within a network as a means of maximizing the potential benefits available. The paper considers two separate models of RIS-based networks and analyzes several performance metrics associated with the CR secondary user. Monte Carlo simulations are presented to validate the derived expressions. The results indicate the effects of key parameters of the system and the clear improvement of the CR network, in the presence of a RIS-enhanced primary network.

Hardware Impaired Ambient Backscatter NOMA Systems: Reliability and Security

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and ambient backscatter communication have been envisioned as two promising technologies for the Internet-of-things due to their high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. Motivated by this fact, we consider an ambient backscatter NOMA system in the presence of a malicious eavesdropper. Under some realistic assumptions of residual hardware impairments (RHIs), channel estimation errors (CEEs) and imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC), we investigate the physical layer security (PLS) of the ambient backscatter NOMA systems focusing on reliability and security. In order to further improve the security of the considered system, an artificial noise scheme is proposed where the radio frequency (RF) source acts as a jammer that transmits interference signal to the legitimate receivers and eavesdropper. On this basis, the analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived. To gain more insights, the asymptotic analysis and diversity orders for the OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are carried out, and the asymptotic behaviors of the IP in the high main-to-eavesdropper ratio (MER) region are explored as well. Numerical results show that: 1) RHIs, CEEs and ipSIC have negative effects on the OP but positive effects on the IP; 2) Compared with CEEs, RHIs have a more serious impact on the reliability and security of the considered system; 3) There exists a trade-off between reliability and security, and this trade-off can be optimized by reducing the power coefficient of the artificial noise or increasing the interfering factor of readers; 4) There are error floors for the OP due to the CEEs and the reflection coefficient; 5) As MER grows large, the security for Rnand Rf is improved, while the security for T is reduced.

I/Q Imbalance Aware Nonlinear Wireless-Powered Relaying of B5G Networks: Security and Reliability Analysis

Physical layer security is known as a promising paradigm to ensure security for the beyond 5G (B5G) networks in the presence of eavesdroppers. In this paper, we elaborate on a tractable analysis framework to evaluate the reliability and security of wireless-powered decode-and-forward (DF) multi-relay networks. The nonlinear energy harvesters, in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI) and channel estimation errors (CEEs) are taken into account in the considered system. To further improve the secure performance, two relay selection strategies are presented: 1) suboptimal relay selection (SRS); 2) optimal relay selection (ORS). Specifically, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived in closed-form. For the IP, we consider that the eavesdropper can wiretap the signal from the source or the relay. In order to obtain more useful insights, we carry out the asymptotic analysis and diversity orders for the OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime under non-ideal and ideal conditions. Numerical results show that: 1) Although the mismatches of amplitude/phase of transmitter (TX)/receiver (RX) limit the OP performance, it can enhance IP performance; 2) Large number of relays yields better OP performance; 3) There are error floors for the OP because of the CEEs; 4) There is a trade-off for the OP and IO to obtain the balance between reliability and security.

UAV-Aided Multi-Way NOMA Networks with Residual Hardware Impairments

In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) multi-way relaying networks (MWRNs). Multiple terrestrial users aim to exchange their mutual information via an amplify-and-forward (AF) UAV relay. Specifically, the realistic assumption of the residual hardware impairments (RHIs) at the transceivers is taken into account. To evaluate the performance of the considered networks, we derive the analytical expressions for the achievable sum-rate (ASR). In addition, we carry out the asymptotic analysis by invoking the affine expansion of the ASR in terms of \emph{high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slope} and \emph{high SNR power offset}. Numerical results show that: 1) Compared with orthogonal multiple access (OMA), the proposed networks can significantly improve the ASR since it can reduce the time slots from $\left[ {\left( {M - 1} \right)/2} \right] + 1$ to 2; and 2) RHIs of both transmitter and receiver have the same effects on the ASR of the considered networks.

Secrecy Analysis of Ambient Backscatter NOMA Systems under I/Q Imbalance

We investigate the reliability and security of the ambient backscatter (AmBC) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where the source aims to communication with two NOMA users in the presence of an eavesdropper. We consider a more practical case that nodes and backscatter device (BD) suffer from in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI). More specifically, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived in closedform. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviors and corresponding diversity orders for the OP are discussed. Numerical results show that: 1) Although IQI reduces the reliability, it can enhance the security. 2) Compared with the traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system, the AmBC-NOMA system can obtain better reliability when the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio is low; 3) There are error floors for the OP because of the reflection coefficient \b{eta} .

Hardware Impairments Aware Full-Duplex NOMA Networks Over Rician Fading Channels

A cooperative full duplex (FD) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme over Rician fading channels is considered. To be practical, imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and residual hardware impairments (RHIs) at transceivers are taken into account. To evaluate the performance of the considered system, the analytical approximate expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the ergodic rate (ER) of the considered system are derived, and the asymptotic performance is also explored. Simulation results manifest that the FD cooperative NOMA can improve the ergodic sum rate (ESR) of the system compared to the half duplex (HD) mode.

On the Performance of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access over Composite Fading Channels

This paper analyzes the performance of a cooperative relaying non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network over Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channels. Specifically, one base station (BS) is assumed to communicate with two receiving mobile users with one acting also as a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. To highlight the achievable performance gains of the NOMA scheme, conventional relaying with orthogonal multiple access (OMA) is also analyzed. For the two systems under consideration, we derive novel exact closed-form expressions for the ergodic capacity along with the corresponding asymptotic representations. The derived expressions are then used to assess the influence of various system parameters, including the fading and shadowing parameters, on the performance of both the NOMA and OMA systems. Monte-Carlo simulation are provided throughout to verify the accuracy of our analysis. Results reveal that the NOMA system can considerably outperform the OMA approach when the power allocation factor is carefully selected. It is also shown that as the fading and/or shadowing parameters are increased, the ergodic capacity performance enhances.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-Enabled Vehicular Networks: A Physical Layer Security Perspective

This paper studies the physical layer security (PLS) of a vehicular network employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). RIS technologies are emerging as an important paradigm for the realisation of next-generation smart radio environments, where large numbers of small, low-cost and passive elements, reflect the incident signal with an adjustable phase shift without requiring a dedicated energy source. Inspired by the promising potential of RIS-based transmission, we investigate the PLS of two vehicular network system models: One with vehicle-to-vehicle communication with the source employing a RIS-based access point, and the other is in the form of a vehicular adhoc network (VANET), with a RIS-based relay deployed on a building; both models assume the presence of an eavesdropper. The performance of the proposed systems are evaluated in terms of the average secrecy capacity (ASC) and the secrecy outage probability (SOP). We present accurate analytical expressions for the two performance metrics and study the impact of various system parameters on the overall performance of the two considered system configurations. Monte-Carlo simulations are provided throughout to validate the results. The results show that performance of the system in terms of the ASC and SOP is affected by the location of the RIS-relay as well as the number of RIS cells. Moreover, upto an order magnitude gain could be achieved within certain regions when the number of RIS cells are doubled, clearly indicating the benefit of employing a RIS configuration.

The results show that performance of the system in terms of the secrecy capacity is affected by the location of the RIS-relay and the number of RIS cells. The effect of other system parameters such as source power and eavesdropper distances are also studied.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enabled IoT Networks in Generalized Fading Channels

This paper studies an Internet-of-Things (IoT) network employing a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) over generalized fading channels. Inspired by the promising potential of RIS-based transmission, we investigate a RIS-enabled IoT network with the source node employing a RIS-based access point. The system is modelled with reference to a receiver transmitter pair and the Fisher-Snedecor F model is adopted to analyse the composite fading and shadowing channel. Closed-form expressions are derived for the system with regards to the average capacity, average bit error rate (BER) and outage probability. Monte-Carlo simulations are provided throughout to validate the results. The results investigated and reported in this study extend early results reported in the emerging literature on RIS-enabled technologies and provides a framework for the evaluation of a basic RIS-enabled IoT network over the most common multipath fading channels. The results indicate the clear benefit of employing a RIS-enabled access point, as well as the versatility of the derived expressions in analysing the effects of fading and shadowing on the network. The results further demonstrate that for a RIS-enabled IoT network, there is the need to balance between the cost and benefit of increasing the RIS cells against other parameters such as increasing transmit power, especially at low SNR and/or high to moderate fading/shadowing severity.

Full-Duplex Energy-Harvesting Enabled Relay Networks in Generalized Fading Channels

This paper analyzes the performance of a full-duplex decode-and-forward relaying network over the generalized κ-μfading channel. The relay is energy-constrained and relies entirely on harvesting the power signal transmitted by the source based on the time-switching relaying protocol. A unified analytical expression for the ergodic outage probability is derived for the system under consideration. This is then used to derive closed-form analytical expressions for three special cases of the κ-μfading model, namely, Nakagami-m, Rice and Rayleigh. Monte Carlo simulations are provided throughout to verify the correctness of our analysis.
