Programmable Quantum Annealing Architectures with Ising Quantum Wires

Quantum annealing aims at solving optimization problems efficiently by preparing the ground state of an Ising spin-Hamiltonian quantum mechanically. A prerequisite of building a quantum annealer is the implementation of programmable long-range two-, three- or multi-spin Ising interactions. We discuss an architecture, where the required spin interactions are implemented via two-port, or in general multi-port quantum Ising wires connecting the spins of interest. This quantum annealing architecture of spins connected by Ising quantum wires can be realized by exploiting the three dimensional (3D) character of atomic platforms, including atoms in optical lattices and Rydberg tweezer arrays. The realization only requires engineering on-site terms and two-body interactions between nearest neighboring qubits. The locally coupled spin model on a 3D cubic lattice is sufficient to effectively produce arbitrary all-to-all coupled Ising Hamiltonians. We illustrate the approach for few spin devices solving Max-Cut and prime factorization problems, and discuss the potential scaling to large atom based systems.

Precise Programmable Quantum Simulations with Optical Lattices

We present an efficient approach to precisely simulate tight binding models with optical lattices, based on programmable digital-micromirror-device (DMD) techniques. Our approach consists of a subroutine of Wegner-flow enabled precise extraction of a tight-binding model for a given optical potential, and a reverse engineering step of adjusting the potential for a targeting model, for both of which we develop classical algorithms to achieve high precision and high efficiency. With renormalization of Wannier functions and high band effects systematically calibrated in our protocol, we show the tight-binding models with programmable onsite energies and tunnelings can be precisely simulated with optical lattices integrated with the DMD techniques. With numerical simulation, we demonstrate that our approach would facilitate quantum simulation of localization physics with unprecedented programmability and atom-based boson sampling for illustration of quantum computational advantage. We expect this approach would pave a way towards large-scale and precise programmable quantum simulations based on optical lattices.

Fixed points and emergent topological phenomena in a parity-time-symmetric quantum quench

We identify emergent topological phenomena such as dynamic Chern numbers and dynamic quantum phase transitions in quantum quenches of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. Their occurrence in the non-unitary dynamics are intimately connected with fixed points in the Brillouin zone, where the states do not evolve in time. We construct a theoretical formalism for characterizing topological properties in non-unitary dynamics within the framework of biorthogonal quantum mechanics, and prove the existence of fixed points for quenches between distinct static topological phases in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-preserving regime. We then reveal the interesting relation between different dynamic topological phenomena through the momentum-time spin texture characterizing the dynamic process. For quenches involving Hamiltonians in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-broken regime, these topological phenomena are not ensured.

Topology with broken parity-time symmetry

Topological edge states arise in parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric non-unitary quantum dynamics but have so far only been discussed in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-unbroken regime. Here we report the experimental detection of robust topological edge states in one-dimensional photonic quantum walks with spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, thus establishing the existence of topological phenomena therein. We theoretically prove and experimentally confirm that the global Berry phase in non-unitary quantum-walk dynamics unambiguously defines topological invariants of the system in both the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-unbroken and broken regimes. As topological edge states exist in both $\mathcal{PT}$ unbroken and broken regimes, we reveal that topological phenomena are not driven by $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry.

Higher winding number in a non-unitary photonic quantum walk

Topological matter exhibits exotic properties yet phases characterized by large topological invariants are difficult to implement, despite rapid experimental progress. A promising route toward higher topological invariants is via engineered Floquet systems, particularly in photonics, where flexible control holds the potential of extending the study of conventional topological matter to novel regimes. Here we implement a one-dimensional photonic quantum walk to explore large winding numbers. By introducing partial measurements and hence loss into the system, we detect winding numbers of three and four in multi-step non-unitary quantum walks, which agree well with theoretical predictions. Moreover, by probing statistical moments of the walker, we identify locations of topological phase transitions in the system, and reveal the breaking of pseudo-unitary near topological phase boundaries. As the winding numbers are associated with non-unitary time evolution, our investigation enriches understanding of topological phenomena in non-unitary settings.

Observation of emergent momentum-time skyrmions in parity-time-symmetric non-unitary quench dynamics

Topology in quench dynamics gives rise to intriguing dynamic topological phenomena, which are intimately connected to the topology of static Hamiltonians yet challenging to probe experimentally. Here we experimentally detect momentum-time skyrmions in parity-time (PT)-symmetric non-unitary quench dynamics, which are protected by dynamic Chern numbers defined for the emergent momentum-time manifold. Specifically, we experimentally simulate non-unitary quench dynamics of PT-symmetric topological systems using single-photon discrete-time quantum walks, and demonstrate emergence of skyrmions by constructing the time-dependent non-Hermitian density matrix via direct measurements in position space. Our work experimentally reveals the interplay of PT symmetry and quench dynamics in inducing emergent topological structures, and highlights the application of discrete-time quantum walks for the study of dynamic topological phenomena.

Simulating dynamic quantum phase transitions in photonic quantum walks

Signaled by non-analyticities in the time evolution of physical observables, dynamic quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) emerge in quench dynamics of topological systems and possess an interesting geometric origin captured by dynamic topological order parameters (DTOPs). In this work, we report the experimental study of DQPTs using discrete-time quantum walks of single photons. We simulate quench dynamics between distinct Floquet topological phases using quantum-walk dynamics, and experimentally characterize DQPTs and the underlying DTOPs through interference-based measurements. The versatile photonic quantum-walk platform further allows us to experimentally investigate DQPTs for mixed states and in parity-time-symmetric non-unitary dynamics for the first time. Our experiment directly confirms the relation between DQPTs and DTOPs in quench dynamics of a topological system, and opens up the avenue of simulating emergent topological phenomena using discrete-time quantum-walk dynamics.

Dynamical topological invariants and reduced rate functions for dynamical quantum phase transitions in two dimensions

We show that dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in the quench dynamics of two-dimensional topological systems can be characterized by a dynamical topological invariant defined along an appropriately chosen closed contour in momentum space. Such a dynamical topological invariant reflects the vorticity of dynamical vortices responsible for the DQPTs, and thus serves as a dynamical topological order parameter in two dimensions. We demonstrate that when the contour crosses topologically protected fixed points in the quench dynamics, an intimate connection can be established between the dynamical topological order parameter in two dimensions and those in one dimension. We further define a reduced rate function of the Loschmidt echo on the contour, which features non-analyticities at critical times and is sufficient to characterize DQPTs in two dimensions. We illustrate our results using the Haldane honeycomb model and the quantum anomalous Hall model as concrete examples, both of which have been experimentally realized using cold atoms.

Detecting topological invariants in nonunitary discrete-time quantum walks

We report the experimental detection of bulk topological invariants in nonunitary discrete-time quantum walks with single photons. The nonunitarity of the quantum dynamics is enforced by periodically performing partial measurements on the polarization of the walker photon, which effectively introduces loss to the dynamics. The topological invariant of the nonunitary quantum walk is manifested in the quantized average displacement of the walker, which is probed by monitoring the photon loss. We confirm the topological properties of the system by observing localized edge states at the boundary of regions with different topological invariants. We further demonstrate the robustness of both the topological properties and the measurement scheme of the topological invariants against disorder.

Universal trimers emerging from a spin-orbit coupled Fermi sea

We report the existence of a universal trimer state induced by an impurity interacting with a two-component spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas in two dimensions. In the zero-density limit with a vanishing Fermi sea, the trimer is stabilized by the symmetry of the single-particle spectrum under spin-orbit coupling, and is therefore {\it universal} against the short-range details of the interaction potential. When the Fermi energy increases, we show that the trimer is further stabilized by particle-hole fluctuations over a considerable parameter region. We map out the phase diagram consisting of trimers, dimers, and polarons, and discuss the detection of these states using radio-frequency spectroscopy. The universal trimer revealed in our work is a direct manifestation of intriguing three-body correlations emerging from a many-body environment, which, in our case, is cooperatively supported by the single-particle spectral symmetry and the collective particle-hole excitations.

Controllable light capsules employing modified Bessel-Gauss beams

We report, in theory and experiment, on a novel class of controlled light capsules with nearly perfect darkness, directly employing intrinsic properties of modified Bessel-Gauss beams. These beams are able to naturally create three-dimensional bottle-shaped region during propagation as long as the parameters are properly chosen. Remarkably, the optical bottle can be controlled to demonstrate various geometries through tuning the beam parameters, thereby leading to an adjustable light capsule. We provide a detailed insight into the theoretical origin and characteristics of the light capsule derived from modified Bessel-Gauss beams. Moreover, a binary digital micromirror device (DMD) based scheme is first employed to shape the bottle beams by precise amplitude and phase manipulation. Further, we demonstrate their ability for optical trapping of core-shell magnetic microparticles, which play a particular role in biomedical research, with holographic optical tweezers. Therefore, our observations provide a new route for generating and controlling bottle beams and will widen the potentials for micromanipulation of absorbing particles, aerosols or even individual atoms.
