Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconducting State and Collective Modes in Kagome Superconductors

We comprehensively study the unconventional pairing and collective modes in the multiband kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=$\mathrm{K},\mathrm{Cs},\mathrm{Rb}$). By solving gap equations at zero temperature, we identify a transition from normal $s++/s\pm$-wave pairing to time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking pairing with a variation of inter-pocket interactions or density of states. This TRS breaking pairing originates from the superconducting phase frustration of different Fermi pockets and can account for experimental TRS breaking signal in kagome superconductors. Moreover, we investigate collective modes, including the Higgs, Leggett, and Bogoloubov-Anderson-Goldstone modes, arising from fluctuations of the amplitude, relative phase, and overall phase of the superconducting order parameters, respectively. Remarkably, due to the presence of multibands, one branch of the Leggett modes becomes nearly massless near the TRS breaking transition, providing a compelling smoking-gun signature of TRS-breaking superconductivity, in clear contrast to TRS-breaking charge orders. Our results elucidate the rich superconducting physics and its associated collective modes in kagome metals, and suggest feasible experimental detection of TRS breaking pairing.

The $s\pm$ pairing symmetry in the pressured La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ from electron-phonon coupling

The recently discovered bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ exhibits superconductivity with a remarkable transition temperature $T_c\approx 80 $ K under applied pressures above 14.0 GPa. This discovery of new family of high-temperature superconductors has garnered significant attention in the condensed matter physics community. In this work, we assume the this high-temperature superconductor is mediated by phonons and investigate the pairing symmetry in two distinct models: (i) the full-coupling case, where the Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and Ni-$d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals are treated equally in both interlayer and intralayer coupling interactions, and (ii) the half-coupling case, where the intralayer coupling involves only the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital, while the interlayer coupling is restricted to the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital. Our calculations reveal that the interlayer coupling favors an $s\pm$-wave superconducting state, whereas the intralayer coupling promotes an $s++$-wave symmetry. Additionally, we discuss the implications of pair-hopping interactions on the superconducting properties. These findings provide valuable insights into the pairing mechanisms and symmetry of this newly discovered high-temperature superconductor.

Pseudogap Behavior in the Local Spinon Spectrum of Power-Law Diverging Multichannel Kondo Model

Motivated by the emergence of higher-order van Hove singularities (VHS) with power-law divergent density of states (DOS) ($ρ_c(ω)=ρ_0/|ω|^{r}$, $0<r<1$) in materials, we investigate a multichannel Kondo model involving conduction electrons near the higher-order van Hove filling. This model considers $M$ channel and $N$ spin degrees of freedom. Employing a renormalization group analysis and dynamical large-$N$ approach, our results reveal a crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to pseudogap behavior in the spectral properties of the local impurity at the overscreened fixed point. We precisely determine the conditions under which the crossover occurs, either by tuning the exponent $r$ or the ratio $κ=M/N$ to a critical value. This pseudogap phase of spinon exhibits distinct physical properties that could have an impact on the properties of real systems. The results of this study provide novel insights into the non-Fermi liquid and pseudogap behaviors observed in strongly correlated systems and offer a playground to study the interplay between higher-order van Hove singularities and multichannel Kondo physics.

Enhanced nematicity emerging from higher-order van Hove singularities

Motivated by the experimental identification of a higher-order van Hove singularity (VHS) in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome metals, we study electronic instabilities of 2D lattice models with higher-order VHS and flavor degeneracy. In contrast to conventional VHSs, the larger power-law density of states and the weaker nesting propensity of higher-order VHSs conspire together to generate distinct competing instabilities. After discussing the occurrence of higher-order VHSs on square and kagome lattice models, we perform unbiased renormalization group calculations to study competing instabilities and find a rich phase diagram containing ferromagnetism, anti-ferromagnetism, superconductivity and Pomeranchuk orders. Remarkably, there is a generic transition from superconductivity to a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk order with increasing flavor number. Implications for the intriguing quantum states of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome metals are also discussed.

Phonon promoted charge density wave in topological kagome metal ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$

Charge density wave (CDW) orders in vanadium-based kagome metals have recently received tremendous attention due to their unique properties and intricate interplay with exotic correlated phenomena, topological and symmetry-breaking states. However, the origin of the CDW order remains a topic of debate. The discovery of ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$, a vanadium-based bilayer kagome metal exhibiting an in-plane $\sqrt{3}$ x $\sqrt{3} $ $\textit{R}$30$°$ CDW order with time-reversal symmetry breaking, provides a novel platform to explore the underlying mechanism behind the unconventional CDW. Here, we combine high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Raman scattering measurements and density functional theory to investigate the electronic structures and phonon modes of ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ and their evolution with temperature. We identify topologically nontrivial Dirac surface states and multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the vicinity of the Fermi level, with one VHS near the K point exhibiting nesting wave vectors in proximity to the $\sqrt{3}$ x $\sqrt{3}$ $\textit{R}$30$°$ CDW wave vector. Additionally, Raman measurements indicate a strong intrinsic electron-phonon coupling in ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$, as evidenced by the presence of a two-phonon mode and a large frequency amplitude mode. Our findings highlight the fundamental role of lattice degrees of freedom in promoting the CDW in ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ and provide important insights into the fascinating correlation phenomena observed in kagome metals.

Nodeless electron pairing in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$-derived kagome superconductors

The newly discovered kagome superconductors represent a promising platform for investigating the interplay between band topology, electronic order, and lattice geometry. Despite extensive research efforts on this system, the nature of the superconducting ground state remains elusive. In particular, consensus on the electron pairing symmetry has not been achieved so far, in part owing to the lack of a momentum-resolved measurement of the superconducting gap structure. Here we report the direct observation of a nodeless, nearly isotropic, and orbital-independent superconducting gap in the momentum space of two exemplary CsV$_3$Sb$_5$-derived kagome superconductors -- Cs(V$_{0.93}$Nb$_{0.07}$)$_3$Sb$_5$ and Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_3$Sb$_5$, using ultrahigh resolution and low-temperature angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Remarkably, such a gap structure is robust to the appearance or absence of charge order in the normal state, tuned by isovalent Nb/Ta substitutions of V. Moreover, we observe a signature of the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking inside the superconducting state, which extends the previous observation of TRS-breaking CDW in the kagome lattice. Our comprehensive characterizations of the superconducting state provide indispensable information on the electron pairing of kagome superconductors, and advance our understanding of unconventional superconductivity and intertwined electronic orders.

Robust topological superconductivity in spin-orbit coupled systems at higher-order van Hove filling

Van Hove singularities (VHSs) in proximity to the Fermi level promote electronic interactions and generate diverse competing instabilities. It is also known that a nontrivial Berry phase derived from spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can introduce an intriguing decoration into the interactions and thus alter correlated phenomena. However, it is unclear how and what type of new physics can emerge in a system featured by the interplay between VHSs and the Berry phase. Here, based on a general Rashba model on the square lattice, we comprehensively explore such an interplay and its significant influence on the competing electronic instabilities by performing a parquet renormalization group analysis. Despite the existence of a variety of comparable fluctuations in the particle-particle and particle-hole channels associated with higher-order VHSs, we find that the chiral $p \pm ip$ pairings emerge as two stable fixed trajectories within the generic interaction parameter space, namely the system becomes a robust topological superconductor. The chiral pairings stem from the hopping interaction induced by the nontrivial Berry phase. The possible experimental realization and implications are discussed. Our work sheds new light on the correlated states in quantum materials with strong SOC and offers fresh insights into the exploration of topological superconductivity.

Coexistence of Tri-Hexagonal and Star-of-David Pattern in the Charge Density Wave of the Kagome Superconductor AV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$(A=K, Rb, Cs) have attracted much attention because of their unique combination of superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW) order, and nontrivial band topology. The CDW order with an in-plane 2x2 reconstruction is found to exhibit exotic properties, such as time-reversal symmetry breaking and rotational symmetry breaking. However, the nature of the CDW, including its dimensionality, structural pattern, and effect on electronic structure, remains elusive despite intense research efforts. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we unveil for the first time characteristic double-band splittings and band reconstructions, as well as the band gap resulting from band folding, in the CDW phase. Supported by density functional theory calculations, we unambiguously show that the CDW in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ originates from the intrinsic coexistence of Star-of-David and Tri-Hexagonal distortions. The alternating stacking of these two distortions naturally leads to three-dimensional 2x2x2 or 2x2x4 CDW order. Our results provide crucial insights into the nature and distortion pattern of the CDW order, thereby laying down the basis for a substantiated understanding of the exotic properties in the family of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome metals.

Spectroscopic Evidence for a Three-Dimensional Charge Density Wave in Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) family, possessing V kagome nets, has received considerable attention due to the topological electronic structure and intriguing correlated phenomena, including an exotic charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. Detailed electronic structure studies are essential to unravel the characteristics and origin of the CDW as well as its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements for CsV3Sb5 at multiple temperatures and photon energies to reveal the nature of the CDW from an electronic structure perspective. We present evidence for a three-dimensional (3D) CDW order. In the process we also pinpoint a surface state attributed to a Cs terminated surface. This state was previously attributed to band folding band due to a CDW along the c direction or a quantum well state from quantum confinement. The CDW expected 2-fold lattice reconstruction along c axis is observed to be a quadrupling of the unit cell, thus for the first time directly demonstrating the 3D nature of the CDW from the electronic structure perspective. Moreover, this 3D CDW configuration originates from two distinct types of distortions in adjacent kagome layers. These present results not only provide key insights into the nature of the unconventional CDW in CsV3Sb5 but also provides an important reference for further studies on the relationship between the CDW and superconductivity.

Quantum Chaos of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model at the intermediate temperature

We study the quantum chaos in the Bose-Fermi Kondo model in which the impurity spin interacts with conduction electrons and a bosonic bath at the intermediate temperature in the large $N$ limit. The out-of-time-ordered correlator is calculated based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ is extracted. Our calculation shows that the Lyapunov exponent monotonically increases as the Kondo coupling $J_K$ increases, and it can reach an order of $λ_L\sim T$ as $J_K$ approaches the $MCK$ point. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that $λ_L$ decreases monotonously as the impurity and bosonic bath coupling $g$ increases, which is contrary to the general expectation that the most chaotic property occurs at the quantum critical point with the non-Fermi liquid nature.

Quantum Chaos of Unitary Fermi Gases in Strong Pairing Fluctuation Region

The growth rate of the out-of-time-ordered correlator in a N-flavor Fermi gas is investigated and the Lyapunove exponent $λ_L$ is calculated to the order of $1/N$. We find that the Lyapunove exponent monotonically increases as the the interaction strength increases from the BCS limit to the unitary region. At the unitarity the Lyapunove exponent increases while the temperature drops and it can reach to the order of $λ_L\sim T$ around the critical temperature for the $N=1$ case. The system scrambles faster for stronger pairing fluctuations. At the BCS limit, the Lyapunov exponent behaviors as $λ_L\propto e^{μ/T} a^2_s T^2/N$.

Giant Enhancement of the Thermo-Particle Transport Figure of Merit and Breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz Law in Unitary Fermi Gases

We theoretically investigate the thermo-particle transport properties of an unitary Fermi gas be- tween two reservoirs connected by a quantum point contact. We find several distinguished properties that are qualitatively different from those of weak or non-interacting gas systems. The particle trans- port figure of merit is drastically enhanced in the unitary regime and it increases as the transmission coefficient increases, exactly opposite to the behavior in the weak or non-interacting gas systems. The Lorentz number violates the Wiedemann-Franz law, demonstrating the breakdown of Fermi liquid. These transport properties are the hallmarks of the unitary Fermi gas and are attributed to the existence of preformed Cooper pairs.

Robust d-wave pairing symmetry in multi-orbital cobalt high temperature superconductors

The pairing symmetry of the newly proposed cobalt high temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductors formed by vertex shared cation-anion tetrahedral complexes is studied by the methods of mean field, random phase approximation (RPA) and functional renormalization group (FRG) analysis. The results of all these methods show that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry is robustly favored near half filling. The RPA and FRG methods, which are valid in weak interaction regions, predict that the superconducting state is also strongly orbital selective, namely the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital that has the largest density near half filling among the three $t_{2g}$ orbitals dominates superconducting pairing. These results suggest that the new materials, if synthesized, can provide indisputable test to high-$T_c$ pairing mechanism and the validity of different theoretical methods.

Observability of Higgs Mode in a system without Lorentz invariance

We study the observability of the Higgs mode in BEC-BCS crossover. The observability of Higgs mode is investigated by calculating the spectral weight functions of the amplitude fluctuation below the critical transition temperature. At zero temperature, we find that there are two sharp peaks on the spectral function of the amplitude fluctuation attributed to Goldstone and Higgs modes respectively. As the system goes from BCS to BEC side, there is strong enhancement of spectral weight transfer from the Higgs to Goldstone mode. However, even at the unitary regime where the Lorentz invariance is lost, the sharp feature of Higgs mode still exists. We specifically calculate the finite temperature spectral function of amplitude fluctuation at the unitary regime and show that the Higgs mode is observable at the temperature that present experiments can reach.
