WIMP Dark Matter and Baryogenesis

In the present universe visible and dark matter contribute comparable energy density although they have different properties. This coincidence can be elegantly explained if the dark matter relic density, originating from a dark matter asymmetry, is fully determined by the baryon asymmetry. Thus the dark matter mass is not arbitrary, rather becomes predictive. We realize this scenario in baryon(lepton) number conserving models where two or more neutral singlet scalars decay into two or three baryonic(leptonic) dark matter scalars, and also decay into quarks(leptons) through other on-shell and/or off-shell exotic scalar bilinears. The produced baryon(lepton) asymmetries in the dark matter scalar and in the standard model quarks(leptons) are thus equal and opposite. The dark matter mass can be predicted in a range from a few GeV to a few TeV depending on the baryon(lepton) numbers of the decaying scalars and the dark matter scalar. The dark matter scalar can interact with the visible matter through the exchange of the standard model Higgs boson, opening a window for the dark matter direct detection experiments. These models also provide testable predictions in the searches for the exotic scalar bilinears at LHC.

Dark Energy Perturbations Revisited

In this paper we study the evolution of cosmological perturbations in the presence of dynamical dark energy, and revisit the issue of dark energy perturbations. For a generally parameterized equation of state (EoS) such as w_D(z) = w_0+w_1\frac{z}{1+z}, (for a single fluid or a single scalar field ) the dark energy perturbation diverges when its EoS crosses the cosmological constant boundary w_D=-1. In this paper we present a method of treating the dark energy perturbations during the crossing of the $w_D=-1$ surface by imposing matching conditions which require the induced 3-metric on the hypersurface of w_D=-1 and its extrinsic curvature to be continuous. These matching conditions have been used widely in the literature to study perturbations in various models of early universe physics, such as Inflation, the Pre-Big-Bang and Ekpyrotic scenarios, and bouncing cosmologies. In all of these cases the EoS undergoes a sudden change. Through a detailed analysis of the matching conditions, we show that δ_D and θ_D are continuous on the matching hypersurface. This justifies the method used[1-4] in the numerical calculation and data fitting for the determination of cosmological parameters. We discuss the conditions under which our analysis is applicable.

Probing Dark Energy with the Kunlun Dark Universe Survey Telescope

Dark energy is an important science driver of many upcoming large-scale surveys. With small, stable seeing and low thermal infrared background, Dome A, Antarctica, offers a unique opportunity for shedding light on fundamental questions about the universe. We show that a deep, high-resolution imaging survey of 10,000 square degrees in \emph{ugrizyJH} bands can provide competitive constraints on dark energy equation of state parameters using type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, and weak lensing techniques. Such a survey may be partially achieved with a coordinated effort of the Kunlun Dark Universe Survey Telescope (KDUST) in \emph{yJH} bands over 5000--10,000 deg$^2$ and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in \emph{ugrizy} bands over the same area. Moreover, the joint survey can take advantage of the high-resolution imaging at Dome A to further tighten the constraints on dark energy and to measure dark matter properties with strong lensing as well as galaxy--galaxy weak lensing.

Probing CPT Violation with CMB Polarization Measurements

The electrodynamics modified by the Chern-Simons term $\mathcal{L}_{cs}\sim p_μA_ν\tilde F^{μν}$ with a non-vanishing $p_μ$ violates the {\it Charge-Parity-Time Reversal} symmetry (CPT) and rotates the linear polarizations of the propagating {\it Cosmic Microwave Background} (CMB) photons. In this paper we measure the rotation angle $Δα$ by performing a global analysis on the current CMB polarization measurements from the {\it seven-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe} (WMAP7), {\it BOOMERanG 2003} (B03), BICEP and QUaD using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Neglecting the systematic errors of these experiments, we find that the results from WMAP7, B03 and BICEP all are consistent and their combination gives $Δα=-2.33\pm0.72~{\rm deg}~(68\%~C.L.)$, indicating a $3\,σ$ detection of the CPT violation. The QUaD data alone gives $Δα=0.59\pm0.42~{\rm deg}~(68\%~C.L.)$ which has an opposite sign for the central value and smaller error bar compared to that obtained from WMAP7, B03 and BICEP. When combining all the polarization data together, we find $Δα=-0.04\pm0.35~{\rm deg}~(68\%~C.L.)$ which significantly improves the previous constraint on $Δα$ and test the validity of the fundamental CPT symmetry at a higher level.

Probing Dark Energy Dynamics from Current and Future Cosmological Observations

We report the constraints on the dark energy equation-of-state w(z) using the latest 'Constitution' SNe sample combined with the WMAP5 and SDSS data. Based on the localized principal component analysis and the model selection criteria, we find that the LCDM model is generally consistent with the current data, yet there exists weak hint of the possible dynamics of dark energy. In particular, a model predicting w(z)<-1 at z\in[0.25,0.5) and w(z)>-1 at z\in[0.5,0.75), which means that w(z) crosses -1 in the range of z\in[0.25,0.75), is mildly favored at 95% confidence level. Given the best fit model for current data as a fiducial model, we make future forecast from the joint data sets of JDEM, Planck and LSST, and we find that the future surveys can reduce the error bars on the w bins by roughly a factor of 10 for a 5-w-bin model.

A Markov Chain Monte Carlo Study on Dark Matter Property Related to the Cosmic e$^{\pm}$ Excesses

In this paper we develop a Markov Chain Monte Carlo code to study the dark matter properties in interpreting the recent observations of cosmic ray electron/positron excesses. We assume that the dark matter particles couple dominantly to leptons and consider two cases separately with annihilating or decaying into lepton pairs. The constraint on the central density profile from diffuse $γ$-rays around the Galactic center is also included in the Markov Chain Monte Carlo code self-consistently. In the numerical study, 7 parameters are introduced. We fit two data sets independently and find that for the Data set I (PAMELA+ATIC), dark matter with $m_χ\approx0.7$ TeV for annihilation (or 1.4 TeV for decay) and pure $e^+e^-$ channel is favored, while for the Data set II (PAMELA+Fermi-LAT+H.E.S.S.) $m_χ\approx 2$ TeV for annihilation (or 4 TeV for decay) and the combination of $μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^+τ^-$ final states can best fit the data. The H.E.S.S. observation of the Galactic center $γ$-rays puts a strong constraint on the central density profile of the dark matter halo for the annihilation dark matter scenario. In this case the NFW profile which is regarded as the typical predication from the cold dark matter scenario, is excluded with a high significance ($>5σ$). For the decaying dark matter scenario, the constraint is much weaker.

Testing the Lorentz and CPT Symmetry with CMB polarizations and a non-relativistic Maxwell Theory

We present a model for a system involving a photon gauge field and a scalar field at quantum criticality in the frame of a Lifthitz-type non-relativistic Maxwell theory. We will show this model gives rise to Lorentz and CPT violation which leads to a frequency-dependent rotation of polarization plane of radiations, and so leaves potential signals on the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization anisotropies.

Visible and Dark Matter Genesis and Cosmic Positron/Electron Excesses

Dark and baryonic matter contribute comparable energy density to the present Universe. The dark matter may also be responsible for the cosmic positron/electron excesses. We connect these phenomena with Dirac seesaw for neutrino masses. In our model (i) the dark matter relic density is a dark matter asymmetry generated simultaneously with the baryon asymmetry so that we can naturally understand the coincidence between the dark and baryonic matter; (ii) the dark matter mostly decays into the leptons so that its decay can interpret the anomalous cosmic rays with positron/electron excesses.

$CPT$ Violating Electrodynamics and Chern-Simons Modified Gravity

The electrodynamics with a Chern-Simons term $p_μA_ν\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ violates Lorentz and $CPT$ symmetries with a non-vanishing $p_μ$. For a fixed vector $p_μ$, in this paper we point out that the energy-momentum tensor of this theory coupled to the gravity minimally is symmetric but not divergence free, which consequently makes the gravitational field equation inconsistent. To preserve the consistency, we introduce a Chern-Simons term in the gravity sector with the coefficient determined by the Lorentz and $CPT$ violating term in the electromagnetic field. Further we study the phenomenologies of the model on the cosmic microwave background radiation and the relic gravitational waves.

Double Type-II Seesaw, Baryon Asymmetry and Dark Matter for Cosmic e^\pm Excesses

We construct a new realization of type-II seesaw for neutrino masses and baryon asymmetry by extending the standard model with one light and two heavy singlet scalars besides one Higgs triplet. The heavy singlets pick up small vacuum expectation values to give a suppressed trilinear coupling between the triplet and doublet Higgs bosons after the light singlet drives the spontaneous breaking of lepton number. The Higgs triplet can thus remain light and be accessible at the LHC. The lepton number conserving decays of the heavy singlets can generate a lepton asymmetry stored in the Higgs triplet to account for the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. We further introduce stable gauge bosons from a hidden sector, which obtain masses and annihilate into the Higgs triplet after spontaneous breaking of the associated non-Abelian gauge symmetry. With Breit-Wigner enhancement, the stable gauge bosons can simultaneously explain the relic density of dark matter and the cosmic positron/electron excesses.

Primordial perturbation with a modified dispersion relation

In this paper we study the generation of primordial perturbation with a modified dispersion relation in various cosmological evolutions. We stress that the formation of the power spectrum is strongly dependent on the background. Working in a bounce model with a matter-like contracting phase, we obtain a red tilt spectrum due to the modified dispersion relation.

ATIC and PAMELA Results on Cosmic e^\pm Excesses and Neutrino Masses

Recently the ATIC and PAMELA collaborations released their results which show the abundant e^\pm excess in cosmic rays well above the background, but not for the \bar{p}. Their data if interpreted as the dark matter particles' annihilation imply that the new physics with the dark matter is closely related to the lepton sector. In this paper we study the possible connection of the new physics responsible for the cosmic e^\pm excesses to the neutrino mass generation. We consider a class of models and do the detailed numerical calculations. We find that these models can natually account for the ATIC and PAMELA e^\pm and \bar{p} data and at the same time generate the small neutrino masses.

Non-Thermal Production of WIMPs, Cosmic $e^\pm$ Excesses and $γ$-rays from the Galactic Center

In this paper we propose a dark matter model and study aspects of its phenomenology. Our model is based on a new dark matter sector with a U(1)' gauge symmetry plus a discrete symmetry added to the Standard Model of particle physics. The new fields of the dark matter sector have no hadronic charges and couple only to leptons. Our model can not only give rise to the observed neutrino mass hierarchy, but can also generate the baryon number asymmetry via non-thermal leptogenesis. The breaking of the new U(1)' symmetry produces cosmic strings. The dark matter particles are produced non-thermally from cosmic string loop decay which allows one to obtain sufficiently large annihilation cross sections to explain the observed cosmic ray positron and electron fluxes recently measured by the PAMELA, ATIC, PPB-BETS, Fermi-LAT, and HESS experiments while maintaining the required overall dark matter energy density. The high velocity of the dark matter particles from cosmic string loop decay leads to a low phase space density and thus to a dark matter profile with a constant density core in contrast to what happens in a scenario with thermally produced cold dark matter where the density keeps rising towards the center. As a result, the flux of gamma rays radiated from the final leptonic states of dark matter annihilation from the Galactic center is suppressed and satisfies the constraints from the HESS gamma-ray observations.

Constraints on Models with a Break in the Primordial Power Spectrum

One of the characteristics of the "Matter Bounce" scenario, an alternative to cosmological inflation for producing a scale-invariant spectrum of primordial adiabatic fluctuations on large scales, is a break in the power spectrum at a characteristic scale, below which the spectral index changes from n = 1 to n = 3. We study the constraints which current cosmological data place on the location of such a break, and more generally on the position of the break and the slope at length scales smaller than the break. The observational data we use include the WMAP five-year data set (WMAP5), other CMB data from BOOMERanG, CBI, VSA, and ACBAR, large-scale structure data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, their luminous red galaxies sample), Type Ia Supernovae data (the "Union" compilation), and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Lyman-αforest power spectrum (Lyα) data. We employ the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to constrain the features in the primordial power spectrum which are motivated by the matter bounce model. We give an upper limit on the length scale where the break in the spectrum occurs.

Thermal Fluctuations and Bouncing Cosmologies

We study the conditions under which thermal fluctuations generated in the contracting phase of a non-singular bouncing cosmology can lead to a scale-invariant spectrum of cosmological fluctuations at late times in the expanding phase. We consider point particle gases, holographic gases and string gases. In the models thus identified, we also study the thermal non-Gaussianities of the resulting distribution of inhomogeneities. For regular point particle radiation, we find that the background must have an equation of state $w = 7/3$ in order to obtain a scale-invariant spectrum, and that the non-Gaussianities are suppressed on scales larger than the thermal wavelength. For Gibbons-Hawking radiation, we find that a matter-dominated background yields scale-invariance, and that the non-Gaussianities are large. String gases are also briefly considered.

The Trans-Planckian Problem for Inflationary Cosmology Revisited

We consider an inflationary universe model in which the phase of accelerated expansion was preceded by a non-singular bounce and a period of contraction which involves a phase of deceleration. We follow fluctuations which exit the Hubble radius in the radiation-dominated contracting phase as quantum vacuum fluctuations, re-enter the Hubble radius in the deflationary period and re-cross during the phase of inflationary expansion. Evolving the fluctuations using the general relativistic linear perturbation equations, we find that they exit the Hubble radius during inflation not with a scale-invariant spectrum, but with a highly red spectrum with index $n_s = -3$. We also show that the back-reaction of fluctuations limits the time interval of deflation. Our toy model demonstrates the importance for inflationary cosmology both of the trans-Planckian problem for cosmological perturbations and of back-reaction effects . Firstly, without understanding both Planck-scale physics and the phase which preceded inflation, it is a non-trivial assumption to take the perturbations to be in their local vacuum state when they exit the Hubble radius at late times. Secondly, the back-reaction effects of fluctuations can influence the background in an important way.

Non-Gaussianity in a Matter Bounce

A nonsingular bouncing cosmology in which the scales of interest today exit the Hubble radius in a matter-dominated contracting phase yields an alternative to inflation for producing a scale-invariant spectrum of adiabatic cosmological fluctuations. In this paper we identify signatures in the non-Gaussianities of the fluctuations which are specific to this scenario and allow it to be distinguished from the results of inflationary models.

Cosmic Ray Positrons from Cosmic Strings

We study the spectrum of cosmic ray positrons produced by a scaling distribution of non-superconducting cosmic strings. In this scenario, the positrons are produced from the jets which form from the cosmic string cusp annihilation process. The spectral shape is a robust feature of our scenario, and is in good agreement with the results from the recent PAMELA and ATIC experiments. In particular, the model predicts a sharp upper cutoff in the spectrum, and a flux which rises as the upper cutoff is approached. The energy at which the flux peaks is determined by the initial jet energy. The amplitude of the flux can be adjusted by changing the cosmic string tension and also depends on the cusp annihilation efficiency.
