Sparse Neighborhood Graph-Based Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search Revisited: Theoretical Analysis and Optimization

Graph-based approaches to approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS) enable fast, high-recall retrieval on billion-scale vector datasets. Among them, the Sparse Neighborhood Graph (SNG) is widely used due to its strong search performance. However, the lack of theoretical understanding of SNG leads to expensive tuning of the truncation parameter that controls graph sparsification. In this work, we present OPT-SNG, a principled framework for analyzing and optimizing SNG construction. We introduce a martingale-based model of the pruning process that characterizes the stochastic evolution of candidate sets during graph construction. Using this framework, we prove that SNG has a maximum out-degree of \(O(n^{2/3+\epsilon})\), where \(\epsilon>0\) is an arbitrarily small constant, and an expected search path length of \(O(\log n)\). Building on these insights, we derive a closed-form rule for selecting the optimal truncation parameter \(R\), thereby eliminating the need for costly parameter sweeping. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that OPT-SNG achieves an average \(5.9\times\) speedup in index construction time, with peak improvements reaching \(15.4\times\), while consistently maintaining or improving search performance.

Non-Hermitian Chiral Skin Effect

The interplay between non-Hermitian effects and topological insulators has become a frontier of research in non-Hermitian physics. However, the existence of a non-Hermitian skin effect for topological-protected edge states remains controversial. In this paper, we discover an alternative form of the non-Hermitian skin effect called the non-Hermitian chiral skin effect (NHCSE). NHCSE is a non-Hermitian skin effect under periodic boundary condition rather than open boundary condition. Specifically, the chiral modes of the NHCSE localize around \textquotedblleft topological defects\textquotedblright characterized by global dissipation rather than being confined to the system boundaries. We show its detailed physical properties by taking the non-Hermitian Haldane model as an example. As a result, the intrinsic mechanism of the hybrid skin-topological effect in Chern insulators is fully understood via NHCSE. Therefore, this progress will be helpful for solving the controversial topic of hybrid skin-topological effect and thus benefit the research on both non-Hermitian physics and topological quantum states.

Observation of anomalous amplitude modes in the kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The charge-density wave (CDW) phase is often accompanied by the condensation of a soft acoustic phonon mode, giving rise to lattice distortion and charge density modulation. This picture was challenged for the recently discovered kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, based on the evidence of absence of soft phonons. Here we report the observation of Raman-active CDW amplitude modes in this material, which are collective excitations typically thought to emerge out of frozen soft phonons. The amplitude modes strongly hybridize with other superlattice modes, imparting them with clear temperature-dependent frequency shift and broadening, rarely seen in other known CDW materials. Both the mode mixing and the large amplitude mode frequencies suggest that the CDW exhibits the character of strong electron-phonon coupling, a regime in which acoustic phonon softening can cease to exist. The observation of amplitude modes in the absence of soft phonons highlights the unconventional nature of the CDW in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Deep learning Local Reduced Density Matrices for Many-body Hamiltonian Estimation

Human experts cannot efficiently access the physical information of quantum many-body states by simply "reading" the coefficients, but have to reply on the previous knowledge such as order parameters and quantum measurements. In this work, we demonstrate that convolutional neural network (CNN) can learn from the coefficients of local reduced density matrices to estimate the physical parameters of the many-body Hamiltonians, such as coupling strengths and magnetic fields, provided the states as the ground states. We propose QubismNet that consists of two main parts: the Qubism map that visualizes the ground states (or the purified reduced density matrices) as images, and a CNN that maps the images to the target physical parameters. By assuming certain constraints on the training set for the sake of balance, QubismNet exhibits impressive powers of learning and generalization on several quantum spin models. While the training samples are restricted to the states from certain ranges of the parameters, QubismNet can accurately estimate the parameters of the states beyond such training regions. For instance, our results show that QubismNet can estimate the magnetic fields near the critical point by learning from the states away from the critical vicinity. Our work illuminates a data-driven way to infer the Hamiltonians that give the designed ground states, and therefore would benefit the existing and future generalizations of quantum technologies such as Hamiltonian-based quantum simulations and state tomography.

Character of frustration on magnetic correlation in doped Hubbard model

The magnetic correlation in the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice is studied by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Around half filling, it is found that the increasing frustration $t'/t$ could change the wave vector of maximum spin correlation along ($π,π$)$\rightarrow$($π,\frac{5π}{6}$)$\rightarrow$($\frac{5π}{6},\frac{5π}{6}$)$\rightarrow$ ($\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{3}$), indicating the frustration's remarkable effect on the magnetism. In the studied filling region =1.0-1.3, the doping behaves like some kinds of {\it{frustration}}, which destroys the $(π,π)$ AFM correlation quickly and push the magnetic order to a wide range of the $(\frac{2π}{3},\frac{2π}{3})$ $120^{\circ}$ order when the $t'/t$ is large enough. Our non-perturbative calculations reveal a rich magnetic phase diagram over both the frustration and electron doping.
