Rethinking Item Tokenization in Generative Recommenders: From Fixed Atoms to Semantic Subwords

In generative recommender systems, items are typically tokenized into fixed-length semantic ID sequences for autoregressive next-item prediction. However, for user-context modeling, this fine-grained representation triggers Intra-item Attention Overload: excessive attention is spent on low-level intra-item dependencies rather than high-level inter-item behavioral transitions. To address this, we propose Semantic Subword Tokenization (SST), which represents historical items as variable-length semantic subwords while preserving fixed-length target decoding. SST first applies Item-level Subword Tokenization (IST) to merge stable adjacent atom tokens into compact semantic subword tokens, thereby reducing intra-item reassembly in the encoder. It then introduces Behavior-induced Co-occurrence Augmentation (BCA) to inject coarse-grained semantic prefix transition signals, guiding the freed modeling capacity toward inter-item behavioral regularities. Extensive experiments on three public datasets and three generative recommender backbones show empirical improvements of SST over fixed-length and transferable variable-length SID baselines. The Next Paradigm Is User-Centric Agent, Not Platform-Centric Service

Modern digital services have evolved into indispensable tools, driving the present large-scale information systems. Yet, the prevailing platform-centric model, where services are optimized for platform-driven metrics such as engagement and conversion, often fails to align with users' true needs. While platform technologies have advanced significantly-especially with the integration of large language models (LLMs)-we argue that improvements in platform service quality do not necessarily translate to genuine user benefit. Instead, platform-centric services prioritize provider objectives over user welfare, resulting in conflicts against user interests. This paper argues that the future of digital services should shift from a platform-centric to a user-centric agent. These user-centric agents prioritize privacy, align with user-defined goals, and grant users control over their preferences and actions. With advancements in LLMs and on-device intelligence, the realization of this vision is now feasible. This paper explores the opportunities and challenges in transitioning to user-centric intelligence, presents a practical device-cloud pipeline for its implementation, and discusses the necessary governance and ecosystem structures for its adoption.

Practice on Long Behavior Sequence Modeling in Tencent Advertising

Long-sequence modeling has become an indispensable frontier in recommendation systems for capturing users' long-term preferences. However, user behaviors within advertising domains are inherently sparse, posing a significant barrier to constructing long behavioral sequences using data from a single advertising domain alone. This motivates us to collect users' behaviors not only across diverse advertising scenarios, but also beyond the boundaries of the advertising domain into content domains-thereby constructing unified commercial behavior trajectories. This cross-domain or cross-scenario integration gives rise to the following challenges: (1) feature taxonomy gaps between distinct scenarios and domains, (2) inter-field interference arising from irrelevant feature field pairs, and (3) target-wise interference in temporal and semantic patterns when optimizing for different advertising targets. To address these challenges, we propose several practical approaches within the two-stage framework for long-sequence modeling. In the first (search) stage, we design a hierarchical hard search method for handling complex feature taxonomy hierarchies, alongside a decoupled embedding-based soft search to alleviate conflicts between attention mechanisms and feature representation. In the second (sequence modeling) stage, we introduce: (a) Decoupled Side Information Temporal Interest Networks (TIN) to mitigate inter-field conflicts; (b) Target-Decoupled Positional Encoding and Target-Decoupled SASRec to address target-wise interference; and (c) Stacked TIN to model high-order behavioral correlations. Deployed in production on Tencent's large-scale advertising platforms, our innovations delivered significant performance gains: an overall 4.22% GMV lift in WeChat Channels and an overall 1.96% GMV increase in WeChat Moments.
