Skeletons of monomial ideals

In analogy to the skeletons of a simplicial complex and their Stanley--Reisner ideals we introduce the skeletons of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I\subset S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. This allows us to compute the depth of $S/I$ in terms of its skeleton ideals. We apply these techniques to show that Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decompositions of $S/I$ holds provided it holds whenever $S/I$ is Cohen--Macaulay. We also discuss a conjecture of Soleyman-Jahan and show that it suffices to prove his conjecture for monomial ideals with linear resolution.

How to compute the Stanley depth of a monomial ideal

Let $J\subset I$ be monomial ideals. We show that the Stanley depth of $I/J$ can be computed in a finite number of steps. We also introduce the $\fdepth$ of a monomial ideal which is defined in terms of prime filtrations and show that it can also be computed in a finite number of steps. In both cases it is shown that these invariants can be determined by considering partitions of suitable finite posets into intervals.

Pretty clean monomial ideals and linear quotients

We study basic properties of monomial ideals with linear quotients. It is shown that if the monomial ideal $I$ has linear quotients, then the squarefree part of $I$ and each component of $I$ as well as $\mm I$ have linear quotients, where $\mm$ is the graded maximal ideal of the polynomial ring. As an analogy to the Rearrangement Lemma of Björner and Wachs we also show that for a monomial ideal with linear quotients the admissible order of the generators can be chosen degree increasingly. As a generalization of the facet ideal of a forest, we define monomial ideals of forest type and show that they are pretty clean. This result recovers a recent result of Tuly and Villarreal about the shellability of a clutter with the free vertex property. As another consequence of this result we show that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of forest type, then Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decomposition holds for $S/I$. We also show that a clutter is totally balanced if and only if it has the free vertex property.

Bounds for Hilbert coefficients

We compute the Hilbert coefficients of a graded module with pure resolution and discuss lower and upper bounds for these coefficients for arbitrary graded modules.

Standard graded vertex cover algebras, cycles and leaves

The aim of this paper is to characterize simplicial complexes which have standard graded vertex cover algebras. This property has several nice consequences for the squarefree monomial ideals defining these algebras. It turns out that such simplicial complexes are closely related to a range of hypergraphs which generalize bipartite graphs and trees. These relationships allow us to obtain very general results on standard graded vertex cover algebras which cover previous major results on Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals.

Cohen-Macaulay chordal graphs

We classify all Cohen-Macaulay chordal graphs. In particular. it is shown that a chordal graph is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if its unmixed.

The monomial ideal of a finite meet-semilattice

Squarefree monomial ideals arising from finite meet-semilattices and their free resolutions are studied. For the squarefree monomial ideals corresponding to poset ideals in a distributive lattice the Alexander dual is computed.

Resolutions of facet ideals

In this paper we study the resolution of a facet ideal associated with a special class of simplicial complexes introduced by S. Faridi. These simplicial complexes are called trees, and are a generalization (to higher dimensions) of the concept of a tree in graph theory. We show that the Koszul homology of the facet ideal I of a tree is generated by the homology classes of monomial cycles, determine the projective dimension and the regularity of I if the tree is 1-dimensional, show that the graded Betti numbers of I satisfy an alternating sum property if the tree is connected in codimension 1, and classify all trees whose facet ideal has a linear resolution.

Monomial ideals whose powers have a linear resolution

In this paper we consider graded ideals in a polynomial ring over a field and ask when such an ideal has the property that all of its powers have a linear resolution. In particular it is shown that all powers of a monomial ideal with 2-linear resolution have again a linear resolution.
