Top-$k$ Regularization for Supervised Feature Selection

Feature selection identifies subsets of informative features and reduces dimensions in the original feature space, helping provide insights into data generation or a variety of domain problems. Existing methods mainly depend on feature scoring functions or sparse regularizations; nonetheless, they have limited ability to reconcile the representativeness and inter-correlations of features. In this paper, we introduce a novel, simple yet effective regularization approach, named top-$k$ regularization, to supervised feature selection in regression and classification tasks. Structurally, the top-$k$ regularization induces a sub-architecture on the architecture of a learning model to boost its ability to select the most informative features and model complex nonlinear relationships simultaneously. Theoretically, we derive and mathematically prove a uniform approximation error bound for using this approach to approximate high-dimensional sparse functions. Extensive experiments on a wide variety of benchmarking datasets show that the top-$k$ regularization is effective and stable for supervised feature selection.

Ordinal sum of two binary operations being a t-norm on bounded lattice

The ordinal sum of t-norms on a bounded lattice has been used to construct other t-norms. However, an ordinal sum of binary operations (not necessarily t-norms) defined on the fixed subintervals of a bounded lattice may not be a t-norm. Some necessary and sufficient conditions are presented in this paper for ensuring that an ordinal sum on a bounded lattice of two binary operations is, in fact, a t-norm. In particular, the results presented here provide an answer to an open problem put forward by Ertuğrul and Yeşilyurt [Ordinal sums of triangular norms on bounded lattices, Inf. Sci., 517 (2020) 198-216].

On the Existence of $t_r$-Norm and $t_r$-Conorm not in Convolution Form

This paper constructs a $t_{r}$-norm and a $t_{r}$-conorm on the set of all normal and convex functions from ${[0, 1]}$ to ${[0, 1]}$, which are not obtained by using the following two formulas on binary operations ${\curlywedge}$ and ${\curlyvee}$: $$ {(f\curlywedge g)(x)=\sup\left\{f(y)\ast g(z)\mid y\vartriangle z=x\right\},} $$ $$ {(f\curlyvee g)(x)=\sup\left\{f(y)\ast g(z)\mid y\ \triangledown\ z=x\right\},} $$ where ${f, g\in Map([0, 1], [0, 1])}$, ${\vartriangle}$ and ${\triangledown}$ are respectively a ${t}$-norm and a ${t}$-conorm on ${[0, 1]}$, and ${\ast}$ is a binary operation on ${[0, 1]}$. {\color{blue}This result answers affirmatively an open problem posed in \cite{HCT2015}. Moreover, the duality between $t_r$-norms and $t_r$-conorms is obtained by the introduction of operations dual to binary operations on ${Map([0, 1], [0, 1])}$.}

Characterizing idempotent nullnorms on bounded lattices

Nullnorms with a zero element being at any point of a bounded lattice are an important generalization of triangular norms and triangular conorms. This paper obtains an equivalent characterization for the existence of idempotent nullnorms with the zero element $a$ on any bounded lattice containing two distinct elements incomparable with $a$. Furthermore, some basic properties for the bounded lattice containing two distinct element incomparable with a are presented.

On lattice-ordered $t_{r}$-norms for type-2 fuzzy sets

In this paper, it is proved that, for the truth value algebra of interval-valued fuzzy sets, the distributive laws do not imply the monotonicity condition for the set inclusion operation. Then, a lattice-ordered $t_{r}$-norm, which is not the convolution of $t$-norms on $[0, 1]$, is obtained. These results negatively answer two open problems posed by Walker and Walker in [15].

Some Properties of Recurrent Sets for Endomorphisms of Topological Groups

This paper studies topological definitions of chain recurrence and shadowing for continuous endomorphisms of topological groups generalizing the relevant concepts for metric spaces. It is proved that in this case the sets of chain recurrent points and chain transitive component of the identity are topological subgroups. Furthermore, it is obtained that some dynamical properties induced by the original system on quotient spaces. These results link an algebraic property to a dynamical property.

Answering an open question in fuzzy metric spaces

This paper answers affirmatively Problem 32 posted in \cite{GMM2012}, proving that, for every stationary fuzzy metric space $(X, M, *)$, the function $M_y(x):=M(x,y)$ defined therein is $\mathbb{R}$-uniformly continuous for all $y\in X$, and furthermore proves that the function $M$ is $\mathbb{R}$-uniformly continuous.

Answering two open problems on Banks theorem for non-autonomous dynamical systems

This paper shows that (1) there exists a topologically transitive NADS having two disjoint invariant periodic orbits with dense periodic points, which is finitely generated but not periodic; (2) there exists a topologically transitive non-finitely generated NADS having two disjoint invariant periodic orbits with dense periodic point, which is not sensitive. This answers positively the Open Problems 4.1 and 4.2 posed in [8].

Answering An Open Problem on $T$-Norms for Type-2 Fuzzy Sets

This paper proves that a binary operation ${\star}$ on ${[0, 1]}$, ensuring that the binary operation ${\curlywedge}$ is a ${t}$-norm or ${\curlyvee}$ is a ${t}$-conorm, is a ${t}$-norm, where ${\curlywedge}$ and ${\curlyvee}$ are special convolution operations defined by $${(f\curlywedge g)(x)=\sup\left\{f(y)\star g(z): y\vartriangle z=x\right\},} $$ $${(f\curlyvee g)(x)=\sup\left\{f(y)\star g(z): y\ \triangledown\ z=x\right\},} $$ for any ${f, g\in Map([0, 1], [0, 1])}$, where ${\vartriangle}$ and ${\triangledown}$ are a continuous ${t}$-norm and a continuous ${t}$-conorm on ${[0, 1]}$, answering negatively an open problem posed in \cite{HCT2015}. Besides, some characteristics of ${t}$-norm and ${t}$-conorm are obtained in terms of the binary operations ${\curlywedge}$ and ${\curlyvee}$.

The conformable fractional grey system model

The fractional order grey models (FGM) have appealed considerable interest of research in recent years due to its higher effectiveness and flexibility than the conventional grey models and other prediction models. However, the definitions of the fractional order accumulation (FOA) and difference (FOD) is computationally complex, which leads to difficulties for the theoretical analysis and applications. In this paper, the new definition of the FOA are proposed based on the definitions of Conformable Fractional Derivative, which is called the Conformable Fractional Accumulation (CFA), along with its inverse operation, the Conformable Fractional Difference (CFD). Then the new Conformable Fractional Grey Model (CFGM) based on CFA and CFD is introduced with detailed modelling procedures. The feasibility and simplicity and the CFGM are shown in the numerical example. And the at last the comprehensive real-world case studies of natural gas production forecasting in 11 countries are presented, and results show that the CFGM is much more effective than the existing FGM model in the 165 subcases.

Relationship among several types of sensitivity in general semi-flows

In this paper, we show that there exists a monoid, on which neither the syndetic property nor the dual syndetic property holds, and there exists a strongly mixing semi-flow with this monoid action which does not have thick sensitivity, syndetic sensitivity, thickly syndetic sensitivity, or thickly periodical sensitivity. Meanwhile, we show that there exists a thickly sensitive cascade which is not multi-sensitive. Distribution-dependent concentration inequalities for tighter generalization bounds

Concentration inequalities are indispensable tools for studying the generalization capacity of learning models. Hoeffding's and McDiarmid's inequalities are commonly used, giving bounds independent of the data distribution. Although this makes them widely applicable, a drawback is that the bounds can be too loose in some specific cases. Although efforts have been devoted to improving the bounds, we find that the bounds can be further tightened in some distribution-dependent scenarios and conditions for the inequalities can be relaxed. In particular, we propose four types of conditions for probabilistic boundedness and bounded differences, and derive several distribution-dependent extensions of Hoeffding's and McDiarmid's inequalities. These extensions provide bounds for functions not satisfying the conditions of the existing inequalities, and in some special cases, tighter bounds. Furthermore, we obtain generalization bounds for unbounded and hierarchy-bounded loss functions. Finally we discuss the potential applications of our extensions to learning theory.

Sensitive dependence and transitivity of fuzzified dynamical systems

This paper proves that a set-valued dynamical system is sensitively dependent on initial conditions (resp., $\mathscr{F}$-sensitive, multi-sensitive) if and only if its $g$-fuzzification is sensitively dependent on initial conditions (resp., $\mathscr{F}$-sensitive, multi-sensitive), where $\mathscr{F}$ is a Furstenberg family. As an application, it is shown that there exists a sensitive dynamical system whose $g$-fuzzification does not have such sensitive dependence for any $g$ in a certain domain. Moreover, a sufficient condition ensuring that the $g$-fuzzification of every nontrivial dynamical system is not transitive is obtained. These give an answer to a question posed in \cite[J. Kupka, Information Sciences, {\bf 279} (2014): 642--653]{Kupka2014}.
