Director3D: Real-world Camera Trajectory and 3D Scene Generation from Text

Recent advancements in 3D generation have leveraged synthetic datasets with ground truth 3D assets and predefined cameras. However, the potential of adopting real-world datasets, which can produce significantly more realistic 3D scenes, remains largely unexplored. In this work, we delve into the key challenge of the complex and scene-specific camera trajectories found in real-world captures. We introduce Director3D, a robust open-world text-to-3D generation framework, designed to generate both real-world 3D scenes and adaptive camera trajectories. To achieve this, (1) we first utilize a Trajectory Diffusion Transformer, acting as the Cinematographer, to model the distribution of camera trajectories based on textual descriptions. (2) Next, a Gaussian-driven Multi-view Latent Diffusion Model serves as the Decorator, modeling the image sequence distribution given the camera trajectories and texts. This model, fine-tuned from a 2D diffusion model, directly generates pixel-aligned 3D Gaussians as an immediate 3D scene representation for consistent denoising. (3) Lastly, the 3D Gaussians are refined by a novel SDS++ loss as the Detailer, which incorporates the prior of the 2D diffusion model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Director3D outperforms existing methods, offering superior performance in real-world 3D generation.

GGAvatar: Geometric Adjustment of Gaussian Head Avatar

We propose GGAvatar, a novel 3D avatar representation designed to robustly model dynamic head avatars with complex identities and deformations. GGAvatar employs a coarse-to-fine structure, featuring two core modules: Neutral Gaussian Initialization Module and Geometry Morph Adjuster. Neutral Gaussian Initialization Module pairs Gaussian primitives with deformable triangular meshes, employing an adaptive density control strategy to model the geometric structure of the target subject with neutral expressions. Geometry Morph Adjuster introduces deformation bases for each Gaussian in global space, creating fine-grained low-dimensional representations of deformation behaviors to address the Linear Blend Skinning formula's limitations effectively. Extensive experiments show that GGAvatar can produce high-fidelity renderings, outperforming state-of-the-art methods in visual quality and quantitative metrics.

Dual3D: Efficient and Consistent Text-to-3D Generation with Dual-mode Multi-view Latent Diffusion

We present Dual3D, a novel text-to-3D generation framework that generates high-quality 3D assets from texts in only $1$ minute. The key component is a dual-mode multi-view latent diffusion model. Given the noisy multi-view latents, the 2D mode can efficiently denoise them with a single latent denoising network, while the 3D mode can generate a tri-plane neural surface for consistent rendering-based denoising. Most modules for both modes are tuned from a pre-trained text-to-image latent diffusion model to circumvent the expensive cost of training from scratch. To overcome the high rendering cost during inference, we propose the dual-mode toggling inference strategy to use only $1/10$ denoising steps with 3D mode, successfully generating a 3D asset in just $10$ seconds without sacrificing quality. The texture of the 3D asset can be further enhanced by our efficient texture refinement process in a short time. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method delivers state-of-the-art performance while significantly reducing generation time. Our project page is available at https://dual3d.github.io

Thermodynamic crossovers in supercritical fluids

Can liquid-like and gas-like states be distinguished beyond the critical point, where the liquid-gas phase transition no longer exists and conventionally only a single supercritical fluid phase is defined? Recent experiments and simulations report strong evidence of dynamical crossovers above the critical temperature and pressure. Despite using different criteria, many existing theoretical explanations consider a single crossover line separating liquid-like and gas-like states in the supercritical fluid phase. We argue that such a single-line scenario is inconsistent with the supercritical behavior of the Ising model, which has two crossover lines due to its symmetry, violating the universality principle of critical phenomena. To reconcile the inconsistency, we define two thermodynamic crossover lines in supercritical fluids as boundaries of liquid-like, indistinguishable, and gas-like states. Near the critical point, the two crossover lines follow critical scalings with exponents of the Ising universality class, supported by calculations of theoretical models and analyses of experimental data from the standard database. The upper line agrees with crossovers independently estimated from the inelastic X-ray scattering data of supercritical argon, and from the small-angle neutron scattering data of supercritical carbon dioxide. The lower line is verified by the equation of states for the compressibility factor. This work provides a fundamental framework for understanding supercritical physics in general phase transitions.

Resilient-By-Design Framework for MIMO-OFDM Communications under Smart Jamming

Native jamming mitigation is essential for addressing security and resilience in future 6G wireless networks. In this paper a resilient-by-design framework for effective anti-jamming in MIMO-OFDM wireless communications is introduced. A novel approach that integrates information from wireless sensing services to develop anti-jamming strategies, which do not rely on any prior information or assumptions on the adversary's concrete setup, is explored. To this end, a method that replaces conventional approaches to noise covariance estimation in anti-jamming with a surrogate covariance model is proposed, which instead incorporates sensing information on the jamming signal's directions-of-arrival (DoAs) to provide an effective approximation of the true jamming strategy. The study further focuses on integrating this novel, sensing-assisted approach into the joint optimization of beamforming, user scheduling and power allocation for a multi-user MIMO-OFDM uplink setting. Despite the NP-hard nature of this optimization problem, it can be effectively solved using an iterative water-filling approach. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed sensing-assisted jamming mitigation, the corresponding worst-case jamming strategy is investigated, which aims to minimize the total user sum-rate. Experimental simulations eventually affirm the robustness of our approach against both worst-case and barrage jamming, demonstrating its potential to address a wide range of jamming scenarios. Since such an integration of sensing-assisted information is directly implemented on the physical layer, resilience is incorporated preemptively by-design.

An Analysis of Capacity-Distortion Trade-Offs in Memoryless ISAC Systems

This manuscript investigates the information-theoretic limits of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), aiming for simultaneous reliable communication and precise channel state estimation. We model such a system with a state-dependent discrete memoryless channel (SD-DMC) with present or absent channel feedback and generalized side information at the transmitter and the receiver, where the joint task of message decoding and state estimation is performed at the receiver. The relationship between the achievable communication rate and estimation error, the capacity-distortion (C-D) trade-off, is characterized across different causality levels of the side information. This framework is shown to be capable of modeling various practical scenarios by assigning the side information with different meanings, including monostatic and bistatic radar systems. The analysis is then extended to the two-user degraded broadcast channel, and we derive an achievable C-D region that is tight under certain conditions. To solve the optimization problem arising in the computation of C-D functions/regions, we propose a proximal block coordinate descent (BCD) method, prove its convergence to a stationary point, and derive a stopping criterion. Finally, several representative examples are studied to demonstrate the versatility of our framework and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

ICHPro: Intracerebral Hemorrhage Prognosis Classification Via Joint-attention Fusion-based 3d Cross-modal Network

Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) is the deadliest subtype of stroke, necessitating timely and accurate prognostic evaluation to reduce mortality and disability. However, the multi-factorial nature and complexity of ICH make methods based solely on computed tomography (CT) image features inadequate. Despite the capacity of cross-modal networks to fuse additional information, the effective combination of different modal features remains a significant challenge. In this study, we propose a joint-attention fusion-based 3D cross-modal network termed ICHPro that simulates the ICH prognosis interpretation process utilized by neurosurgeons. ICHPro includes a joint-attention fusion module to fuse features from CT images with demographic and clinical textual data. To enhance the representation of cross-modal features, we introduce a joint loss function. ICHPro facilitates the extraction of richer cross-modal features, thereby improving classification performance. Upon testing our method using a five-fold cross-validation, we achieved an accuracy of 89.11%, an F1 score of 0.8767, and an AUC value of 0.9429. These results outperform those obtained from other advanced methods based on the test dataset, thereby demonstrating the superior efficacy of ICHPro. VRMN-bD: A Multi-modal Natural Behavior Dataset of Immersive Human Fear Responses in VR Stand-up Interactive Games

Understanding and recognizing emotions are important and challenging issues in the metaverse era. Understanding, identifying, and predicting fear, which is one of the fundamental human emotions, in virtual reality (VR) environments plays an essential role in immersive game development, scene development, and next-generation virtual human-computer interaction applications. In this article, we used VR horror games as a medium to analyze fear emotions by collecting multi-modal data (posture, audio, and physiological signals) from 23 players. We used an LSTM-based model to predict fear with accuracies of 65.31% and 90.47% under 6-level classification (no fear and five different levels of fear) and 2-level classification (no fear and fear), respectively. We constructed a multi-modal natural behavior dataset of immersive human fear responses (VRMN-bD) and compared it with existing relevant advanced datasets. The results show that our dataset has fewer limitations in terms of collection method, data scale and audience scope. We are unique and advanced in targeting multi-modal datasets of fear and behavior in VR stand-up interactive environments. Moreover, we discussed the implications of this work for communities and applications. The dataset and pre-trained model are available at https://github.com/KindOPSTAR/VRMN-bD.

Machine Learning Framework for Modeling Exciton-Polaritons in Molecular Materials

A light-matter hybrid quasiparticle, called a polariton, is formed when molecules are strongly coupled to an optical cavity. Recent experiments have shown that polariton chemistry can manipulate chemical reactions. Polariton chemistry is a collective phenomenon and its effects increase with the number of molecules in a cavity. However, simulating an ensemble of molecules in the excited state coupled to a cavity mode is theoretically and computationally challenging. Recent advances in machine learning techniques have shown promising capabilities in modeling ground state chemical systems. This work presents a general protocol to predict excited-state properties, such as energies, transition dipoles, and non-adiabatic coupling vectors with the hierarchically interacting particle neural network. Machine learning predictions are then applied to compute potential energy surfaces and electronic spectra of a prototype azomethane molecule in the collective coupling scenario. These computational tools provide a much-needed framework to model and understand many molecules' emerging excited-state polariton chemistry.

Decoding Fear: Exploring User Experiences in Virtual Reality Horror Games

This preliminary study investigated user experiences in VR horror games, highlighting fear-triggering and gender-based differences in perception. By utilizing a scientifically validated and specially designed questionnaire, we successfully collected questionnaire data from 23 subjects for an early empirical study of fear induction in a virtual reality gaming environment. The early findings suggest that visual restrictions and ambient sound-enhanced realism may be more effective in intensifying the fear experience. Participants exhibited a tendency to avoid playing alone or during nighttime, underscoring the significant psychological impact of VR horror games. The study also revealed a distinct gender difference in fear perception, with female participants exhibiting a higher sensitivity to fear stimuli. However, the preference for different types of horror games was not solely dominated by males; it varied depending on factors such as the game's pace, its objectives, and the nature of the fear stimulant.

First-principles molecular quantum electrodynamics theory at all coupling strengths

The ever-growing intersection of quantum electrodynamics (QED) and molecular processes has shown remarkable and unanticipated advancements in altering molecular properties and reactivity by exploiting light-matter couplings. In recent years, multiple ab initio methods have been developed to compute the eigenstates of molecular systems strongly coupled to cavities, ranging from the mean-field to quantum many-body methods. The quantum many-body methods, such as coupled-cluster theories, usually rely on the quality of mean-field reference wavefunctions. Hence, developing efficient and physically reliable mean-filed approaches for molecular quantum electrodynamics problems is crucial. The current widely used methods, such as QED Hartree-Fock and the self-consistent counterpart, are limited to specific coupling regimes. In this work, we developed a variational transformation-based molecular quantum electrodynamics mean-field method, namely VT-QEDHF, for light-matter interaction at arbitrary coupling strength. The numerical benchmark demonstrates that the VT-QEDHF method naturally connects both QEDHF and self-consistent QEDHF methods at the two limits, showcasing the advantage of VT-QEHDF across all coupling strengths.

GCS-ICHNet: Assessment of Intracerebral Hemorrhage Prognosis using Self-Attention with Domain Knowledge Integration

Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) is a severe condition resulting from damaged brain blood vessel ruptures, often leading to complications and fatalities. Timely and accurate prognosis and management are essential due to its high mortality rate. However, conventional methods heavily rely on subjective clinician expertise, which can lead to inaccurate diagnoses and delays in treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI) models have been explored to assist clinicians, but many prior studies focused on model modification without considering domain knowledge. This paper introduces a novel deep learning algorithm, GCS-ICHNet, which integrates multimodal brain CT image data and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score to improve ICH prognosis. The algorithm utilizes a transformer-based fusion module for assessment. GCS-ICHNet demonstrates high sensitivity 81.03% and specificity 91.59%, outperforming average clinicians and other state-of-the-art methods.

Hybrid NOMA assisted Integrated Sensing and Communication via RIS

This paper investigates the optimization of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. \red{To meet the demand of growing number of devices, power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered. However, traditional NOMA with a large number of devices is challenging due to large decoding delay and propagation error introduced by successive interference cancellation (SIC). Thus, OMA is integrated into NOMA to support more devices}. We formulate a max-min problem to optimize the sensing beampattern \red{with constraints on communication rate}, through joint power allocation, active beamforming and RIS phase shift design. To solve the non-convex problem with a non-smooth objective function, we propose a low complexity alternating optimization (AO) algorithm, where a closed form expression for the intra-cluster power allocation (intra-CPA) is derived, and penalty and successive convex approximation (SCA) methods are used to optimize the beamforming and phase shift design. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of improving minimum beampattern gain (MBPG) compared with other baselines. Furthermore, the trade-off between sensing and communication is analyzed and demonstrated in the simulation results.

Theory and modeling of light-matter interactions in chemistry: current and future

Light-matter interaction not only plays an instrumental role in characterizing materials' properties via various spectroscopic techniques but also provides a general strategy to manipulate material properties via the design of novel nanostructures. This perspective summarizes recent theoretical advances in modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry, mainly focusing on plasmon and polariton chemistry. The former utilizes the highly localized photon, plasmonic hot electrons, and local heat to drive chemical reactions. In contrast, polariton chemistry modifies the potential energy curvatures of bare electronic systems, and hence their chemistry, via forming light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons. The perspective starts with the basic background of light-matter interactions, molecular quantum electrodynamics theory, and the challenges of modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry. Then, the recent advances in modeling plasmon and polariton chemistry are described, and future directions toward multiscale simulations of light-matter interaction-mediated chemistry are discussed.

Optimal Linear Precoder Design for MIMO-OFDM Integrated Sensing and Communications Based on Bayesian Cramér-Rao Bound

In this paper, we investigate the fundamental limits of MIMO-OFDM integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems based on a Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (BCRB) analysis. We derive the BCRB for joint channel parameter estimation and data symbol detection, in which a performance trade-off between both functionalities is observed. We formulate the optimization problem for a linear precoder design and propose the stochastic Riemannian gradient descent (SRGD) approach to solve the non-convex problem. We analyze the optimality conditions and show that SRGD ensures convergence with high probability. The simulation results verify our analyses and also demonstrate a fast convergence speed. Finally, the performance trade-off is illustrated and investigated.

MGR: Multi-generator Based Rationalization

Rationalization is to employ a generator and a predictor to construct a self-explaining NLP model in which the generator selects a subset of human-intelligible pieces of the input text to the following predictor. However, rationalization suffers from two key challenges, i.e., spurious correlation and degeneration, where the predictor overfits the spurious or meaningless pieces solely selected by the not-yet well-trained generator and in turn deteriorates the generator. Although many studies have been proposed to address the two challenges, they are usually designed separately and do not take both of them into account. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective method named MGR to simultaneously solve the two problems. The key idea of MGR is to employ multiple generators such that the occurrence stability of real pieces is improved and more meaningful pieces are delivered to the predictor. Empirically, we show that MGR improves the F1 score by up to 20.9% as compared to state-of-the-art methods. Codes are available at https://github.com/jugechengzi/Rationalization-MGR .

StreetSurf: Extending Multi-view Implicit Surface Reconstruction to Street Views

We present a novel multi-view implicit surface reconstruction technique, termed StreetSurf, that is readily applicable to street view images in widely-used autonomous driving datasets, such as Waymo-perception sequences, without necessarily requiring LiDAR data. As neural rendering research expands rapidly, its integration into street views has started to draw interests. Existing approaches on street views either mainly focus on novel view synthesis with little exploration of the scene geometry, or rely heavily on dense LiDAR data when investigating reconstruction. Neither of them investigates multi-view implicit surface reconstruction, especially under settings without LiDAR data. Our method extends prior object-centric neural surface reconstruction techniques to address the unique challenges posed by the unbounded street views that are captured with non-object-centric, long and narrow camera trajectories. We delimit the unbounded space into three parts, close-range, distant-view and sky, with aligned cuboid boundaries, and adapt cuboid/hyper-cuboid hash-grids along with road-surface initialization scheme for finer and disentangled representation. To further address the geometric errors arising from textureless regions and insufficient viewing angles, we adopt geometric priors that are estimated using general purpose monocular models. Coupled with our implementation of efficient and fine-grained multi-stage ray marching strategy, we achieve state of the art reconstruction quality in both geometry and appearance within only one to two hours of training time with a single RTX3090 GPU for each street view sequence. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the reconstructed implicit surfaces have rich potential for various downstream tasks, including ray tracing and LiDAR simulation.
