APACE: Agile and Perception-Aware Trajectory Generation for Quadrotor Flights

Various perception-aware planning approaches have attempted to enhance the state estimation accuracy during maneuvers, while the feature matchability among frames, a crucial factor influencing estimation accuracy, has often been overlooked. In this paper, we present APACE, an Agile and Perception-Aware trajeCtory gEneration framework for quadrotors aggressive flight, that takes into account feature matchability during trajectory planning. We seek to generate a perception-aware trajectory that reduces the error of visual-based estimator while satisfying the constraints on smoothness, safety, agility and the quadrotor dynamics. The perception objective is achieved by maximizing the number of covisible features while ensuring small enough parallax angles. Additionally, we propose a differentiable and accurate visibility model that allows decomposition of the trajectory planning problem for efficient optimization resolution. Through validations conducted in both a photorealistic simulator and real-world experiments, we demonstrate that the trajectories generated by our method significantly improve state estimation accuracy, with root mean square error (RMSE) reduced by up to an order of magnitude. The source code will be released to benefit the community.

Efficient Online Learning for Networks of Two-Compartment Spiking Neurons

The brain-inspired Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) have garnered considerable research interest due to their superior performance and energy efficiency in processing temporal signals. Recently, a novel multi-compartment spiking neuron model, namely the Two-Compartment LIF (TC-LIF) model, has been proposed and exhibited a remarkable capacity for sequential modelling. However, training the TC-LIF model presents challenges stemming from the large memory consumption and the issue of gradient vanishing associated with the Backpropagation Through Time (BPTT) algorithm. To address these challenges, online learning methodologies emerge as a promising solution. Yet, to date, the application of online learning methods in SNNs has been predominantly confined to simplified Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) neuron models. In this paper, we present a novel online learning method specifically tailored for networks of TC-LIF neurons. Additionally, we propose a refined TC-LIF neuron model called Adaptive TC-LIF, which is carefully designed to enhance temporal information integration in online learning scenarios. Extensive experiments, conducted on various sequential benchmarks, demonstrate that our approach successfully preserves the superior sequential modeling capabilities of the TC-LIF neuron while incorporating the training efficiency and hardware friendliness of online learning. As a result, it offers a multitude of opportunities to leverage neuromorphic solutions for processing temporal signals.

Knowledge Graph Assisted Automatic Sports News Writing

In this paper, we present a novel method for automatically generating sports news, which employs a unique algorithm that extracts pivotal moments from live text broadcasts and uses them to create an initial draft of the news. This draft is further refined by incorporating key details and background information from a specially designed sports knowledge graph. This graph contains 5,893 entities, which are classified into three distinct conceptual categories, interconnected through four relationship types, and characterized by 27 unique attributes. In addition, we create a multi-stage learning model by combining convolutional neural networks and a transformer encoder. This model expresses entity-task interactions using convolutional neural networks and enriches entity representations in the query set with the transformer encoder. It also includes a processor to compute matching scores for incomplete triples, addressing few-shot knowledge graph completion problem. The efficiency of this approach has been confirmed through both subjective and objective evaluations of 50 selected test cases, demonstrating its capability in revolutionizing the creation of sports news.

Adaptive Regret for Bandits Made Possible: Two Queries Suffice

Fast changing states or volatile environments pose a significant challenge to online optimization, which needs to perform rapid adaptation under limited observation. In this paper, we give query and regret optimal bandit algorithms under the strict notion of strongly adaptive regret, which measures the maximum regret over any contiguous interval $I$. Due to its worst-case nature, there is an almost-linear $Ω(|I|^{1-ε})$ regret lower bound, when only one query per round is allowed [Daniely el al, ICML 2015]. Surprisingly, with just two queries per round, we give Strongly Adaptive Bandit Learner (StABL) that achieves $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n|I|})$ adaptive regret for multi-armed bandits with $n$ arms. The bound is tight and cannot be improved in general. Our algorithm leverages a multiplicative update scheme of varying stepsizes and a carefully chosen observation distribution to control the variance. Furthermore, we extend our results and provide optimal algorithms in the bandit convex optimization setting. Finally, we empirically demonstrate the superior performance of our algorithms under volatile environments and for downstream tasks, such as algorithm selection for hyperparameter optimization.

A Hybrid Neural Coding Approach for Pattern Recognition with Spiking Neural Networks

Recently, brain-inspired spiking neural networks (SNNs) have demonstrated promising capabilities in solving pattern recognition tasks. However, these SNNs are grounded on homogeneous neurons that utilize a uniform neural coding for information representation. Given that each neural coding scheme possesses its own merits and drawbacks, these SNNs encounter challenges in achieving optimal performance such as accuracy, response time, efficiency, and robustness, all of which are crucial for practical applications. In this study, we argue that SNN architectures should be holistically designed to incorporate heterogeneous coding schemes. As an initial exploration in this direction, we propose a hybrid neural coding and learning framework, which encompasses a neural coding zoo with diverse neural coding schemes discovered in neuroscience. Additionally, it incorporates a flexible neural coding assignment strategy to accommodate task-specific requirements, along with novel layer-wise learning methods to effectively implement hybrid coding SNNs. We demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework on image classification and sound localization tasks. Specifically, the proposed hybrid coding SNNs achieve comparable accuracy to state-of-the-art SNNs, while exhibiting significantly reduced inference latency and energy consumption, as well as high noise robustness. This study yields valuable insights into hybrid neural coding designs, paving the way for developing high-performance neuromorphic systems.

Robust Learning Based Condition Diagnosis Method for Distribution Network Switchgear

This paper introduces a robust, learning-based method for diagnosing the state of distribution network switchgear, which is crucial for maintaining the power quality for end users. Traditional diagnostic models often rely heavily on expert knowledge and lack robustness. To address this, our method incorporates an expanded feature vector that includes environmental data, temperature readings, switch position, motor operation, insulation conditions, and local discharge information. We tackle the issue of high dimensionality through feature mapping. The method introduces a decision radius to categorize unlabeled samples and updates the model parameters using a combination of supervised and unsupervised loss, along with a consistency regularization function. This approach ensures robust learning even with a limited number of labeled samples. Comparative analysis demonstrates that this method significantly outperforms existing models in both accuracy and robustness.

A Nonstochastic Control Approach to Optimization

Selecting the best hyperparameters for a particular optimization instance, such as the learning rate and momentum, is an important but nonconvex problem. As a result, iterative optimization methods such as hypergradient descent lack global optimality guarantees in general. We propose an online nonstochastic control methodology for mathematical optimization. First, we formalize the setting of meta-optimization, an online learning formulation of learning the best optimization algorithm from a class of methods. The meta-optimization problem over gradient-based methods can be framed as a feedback control problem over the choice of hyperparameters, including the learning rate, momentum, and the preconditioner. Although the original optimal control problem is nonconvex, we show how recent methods from online nonstochastic control using convex relaxations can be used to overcome the challenge of nonconvexity, and obtain regret guarantees against the best offline solution. This guarantees that in meta-optimization, given a sequence of optimization problems, we can learn a method that attains convergence comparable to that of the best optimization method in hindsight from a class of methods.

The BLA Benchmark: Investigating Basic Language Abilities of Pre-Trained Multimodal Models

Despite the impressive performance achieved by pre-trained language-and-vision models in downstream tasks, it remains an open question whether this reflects a proper understanding of image-text interaction. In this work, we explore to what extent they handle basic linguistic constructions -- active-passive voice, coordination, and relative clauses -- that even preschool children can typically master. We present BLA, a novel, automatically constructed benchmark to evaluate multimodal models on these Basic Language Abilities. We show that different types of Transformer-based systems, such as CLIP, ViLBERT, and BLIP2, generally struggle with BLA in a zero-shot setting, in line with previous findings. Our experiments, in particular, show that most of the tested models only marginally benefit when fine-tuned or prompted with construction-specific samples. Yet, the generative BLIP2 shows promising trends, especially in an in-context learning setting. This opens the door to using BLA not only as an evaluation benchmark but also to improve models' basic language abilities.

Sketchy: Memory-efficient Adaptive Regularization with Frequent Directions

Adaptive regularization methods that exploit more than the diagonal entries exhibit state of the art performance for many tasks, but can be prohibitive in terms of memory and running time. We find the spectra of the Kronecker-factored gradient covariance matrix in deep learning (DL) training tasks are concentrated on a small leading eigenspace that changes throughout training, motivating a low-rank sketching approach. We describe a generic method for reducing memory and compute requirements of maintaining a matrix preconditioner using the Frequent Directions (FD) sketch. While previous approaches have explored applying FD for second-order optimization, we present a novel analysis which allows efficient interpolation between resource requirements and the degradation in regret guarantees with rank $k$: in the online convex optimization (OCO) setting over dimension $d$, we match full-matrix $d^2$ memory regret using only $dk$ memory up to additive error in the bottom $d-k$ eigenvalues of the gradient covariance. Further, we show extensions of our work to Shampoo, resulting in a method competitive in quality with Shampoo and Adam, yet requiring only sub-linear memory for tracking second moments.

Mitigating the noise of DESI mocks using analytic control variates

In order to address fundamental questions related to the expansion history of the Universe and its primordial nature with the next generation of galaxy experiments, we need to model reliably large-scale structure observables such as the correlation function and the power spectrum. Cosmological $N$-body simulations provide a reference through which we can test our models, but their output suffers from sample variance on large scales. Fortunately, this is the regime where accurate analytic approximations exist. To reduce the variance, which is key to making optimal use of these simulations, we can leverage the accuracy and precision of such analytic descriptions using Control Variates (CV). The power of control variates stems from utilizing inexpensive but highly correlated surrogates of the statistics one wishes to measure. The stronger the correlation between the surrogate and the statistic of interest, the larger the variance reduction delivered by the method. We apply two control variate formulations to mock catalogs generated in anticipation of upcoming data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to test the robustness of its analysis pipeline. Our CV-reduced measurements offer a factor of 5-10 improvement in the measurement error compared with the raw measurements. We explore the relevant properties of the galaxy samples that dictate this reduction and comment on the improvements we find on some of the derived quantities relevant to Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) analysis. We also provide an optimized package for computing the power spectra and other two-point statistics of an arbitrary galaxy catalog as well as a pipeline for obtaining CV-reduced measurements on any of the AbacusSummit cubic box outputs. We make our scripts publicly available and report a speed improvement of $\sim$10 for a grid size of $N_{\rm mesh} = 256^3$ compared with \texttt{nbodykit}.

Performance Bounds for Near-Field Localization with Widely-Spaced Multi-Subarray mmWave/THz MIMO

This paper investigates the potential of near-field localization using widely-spaced multi-subarrays (WSMSs) and analyzing the corresponding angle and range Cramér-Rao bounds (CRBs). By employing the Riemann sum, closed-form CRB expressions are derived for the spherical wavefront-based WSMS (SW-WSMS). We find that the CRBs can be characterized by the angular span formed by the line connecting the array's two ends to the target, and the different WSMSs with same angular spans but different number of subarrays have identical normalized CRBs. We provide a theoretical proof that, in certain scenarios, the CRB of WSMSs is smaller than that of uniform arrays. We further yield the closed-form CRBs for the hybrid spherical and planar wavefront-based WSMS (HSPW-WSMS), and its components can be seen as decompositions of the parameters from the CRBs for the SW-WSMS. Simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of the derived closed-form CRBs and provide further insights into various system characteristics. Basically, this paper underscores the high resolution of utilizing WSMS for localization, reinforces the validity of adopting the HSPW assumption, and, considering its applications in communications, indicates a promising outlook for integrated sensing and communications based on HSPW-WSMSs.

Unleashing the Potential of Spiking Neural Networks for Sequential Modeling with Contextual Embedding

The human brain exhibits remarkable abilities in integrating temporally distant sensory inputs for decision-making. However, existing brain-inspired spiking neural networks (SNNs) have struggled to match their biological counterpart in modeling long-term temporal relationships. To address this problem, this paper presents a novel Contextual Embedding Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (CE-LIF) spiking neuron model. Specifically, the CE-LIF model incorporates a meticulously designed contextual embedding component into the adaptive neuronal firing threshold, thereby enhancing the memory storage of spiking neurons and facilitating effective sequential modeling. Additionally, theoretical analysis is provided to elucidate how the CE-LIF model enables long-term temporal credit assignment. Remarkably, when compared to state-of-the-art recurrent SNNs, feedforward SNNs comprising the proposed CE-LIF neurons demonstrate superior performance across extensive sequential modeling tasks in terms of classification accuracy, network convergence speed, and memory capacity.

Effective cosmic density field reconstruction with convolutional neural network

We present a cosmic density field reconstruction method that augments the traditional reconstruction algorithms with a convolutional neural network (CNN). Following Shallue $\&$ Eisenstein (2022), the key component of our method is to use the $\textit{reconstructed}$ density field as the input to the neural network. We extend this previous work by exploring how the performance of these reconstruction ideas depends on the input reconstruction algorithm, the reconstruction parameters, and the shot noise of the density field, as well as the robustness of the method. We build an eight-layer CNN and train the network with reconstructed density fields computed from the Quijote suite of simulations. The reconstructed density fields are generated by both the standard algorithm and a new iterative algorithm. In real space at $z=0$, we find that the reconstructed field is $90\%$ correlated with the true initial density out to $k\sim 0.5 h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, a significant improvement over $k\sim 0.2 h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ achieved by the input reconstruction algorithms. We find similar improvements in redshift space, including an improved removal of redshift space distortions at small scales. We also find that the method is robust across changes in cosmology. Additionally, the CNN removes much of the variance from the choice of different reconstruction algorithms and reconstruction parameters. However, the effectiveness decreases with increasing shot noise, suggesting that such an approach is best suited to high density samples. This work highlights the additional information in the density field beyond linear scales as well as the power of complementing traditional analysis approaches with machine learning techniques.

Variational Relational Point Completion Network for Robust 3D Classification

Real-scanned point clouds are often incomplete due to viewpoint, occlusion, and noise, which hampers 3D geometric modeling and perception. Existing point cloud completion methods tend to generate global shape skeletons and hence lack fine local details. Furthermore, they mostly learn a deterministic partial-to-complete mapping, but overlook structural relations in man-made objects. To tackle these challenges, this paper proposes a variational framework, Variational Relational point Completion Network (VRCNet) with two appealing properties: 1) Probabilistic Modeling. In particular, we propose a dual-path architecture to enable principled probabilistic modeling across partial and complete clouds. One path consumes complete point clouds for reconstruction by learning a point VAE. The other path generates complete shapes for partial point clouds, whose embedded distribution is guided by distribution obtained from the reconstruction path during training. 2) Relational Enhancement. Specifically, we carefully design point self-attention kernel and point selective kernel module to exploit relational point features, which refines local shape details conditioned on the coarse completion. In addition, we contribute multi-view partial point cloud datasets (MVP and MVP-40 dataset) containing over 200,000 high-quality scans, which render partial 3D shapes from 26 uniformly distributed camera poses for each 3D CAD model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that VRCNet outperforms state-of-the-art methods on all standard point cloud completion benchmarks. Notably, VRCNet shows great generalizability and robustness on real-world point cloud scans. Moreover, we can achieve robust 3D classification for partial point clouds with the help of VRCNet, which can highly increase classification accuracy.

A lightweight network for photovoltaic cell defect detection in electroluminescence images based on neural architecture search and knowledge distillation

Nowadays, the rapid development of photovoltaic(PV) power stations requires increasingly reliable maintenance and fault diagnosis of PV modules in the field. Due to the effectiveness, convolutional neural network (CNN) has been widely used in the existing automatic defect detection of PV cells. However, the parameters of these CNN-based models are very large, which require stringent hardware resources and it is difficult to be applied in actual industrial projects. To solve these problems, we propose a novel lightweight high-performance model for automatic defect detection of PV cells in electroluminescence(EL) images based on neural architecture search and knowledge distillation. To auto-design an effective lightweight model, we introduce neural architecture search to the field of PV cell defect classification for the first time. Since the defect can be any size, we design a proper search structure of network to better exploit the multi-scale characteristic. To improve the overall performance of the searched lightweight model, we further transfer the knowledge learned by the existing pre-trained large-scale model based on knowledge distillation. Different kinds of knowledge are exploited and transferred, including attention information, feature information, logit information and task-oriented information. Experiments have demonstrated that the proposed model achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the public PV cell dataset of EL images under online data augmentation with accuracy of 91.74% and the parameters of 1.85M. The proposed lightweight high-performance model can be easily deployed to the end devices of the actual industrial projects and retain the accuracy.

Does Cross-Field Influence Regional and Field-Specific Distributions of Highly Cited Researchers?

Clarivate Analytics announces highly cited researchers (HCRs) every November to recognise true pioneers in their respective fields over the last decade who are one in 1,000 according to citation analysis based on the Web of Science database. However, the scientometric rules underlying HCR selections have constantly evolved over the years; thus, a comparative study between HCRs' academic relevance before and after 2018, when the cross field started to be included in HCR statistics, is essential. This paper evaluated the consistency of measurements in 2017 and 2018 by analysing HCR distributions by different regions and Essential Science Indicators (ESI) fields, studied the effects of introducing the cross-field category to the original 21 ESI fields, and portrayed the accurate picture of HCR distributions by region and subject without the influence of measurement biases. The cross field is believed to exert great impact on regional and field-specific HCR distributions, especially for research fields with HCR counts larger than 150. It was other countries and regions except the US and China that grew with the greatest momentum after the inclusion of cross-field HCRs.
