CIPHER: Causal Intervention Pathways for Healthcare Equity and Robustness

Deep learning models for medical diagnosis frequently exhibit substantial performance disparities across sensitive subgroups (e.g., race, sex), even when average accuracy is high. While generative data augmentation offers a route to mitigate this, existing strategies are suboptimal; they typically address only one or two dependency channels between sensitive attributes and image features. We formalize the medical image formation process via a structural causal model, revealing that sensitive attributes actually influence image content through four distinct pathways-a structural complexity neglected by prior works. Based on this insight, we introduce CIPHER (Causal Intervention Pathways for Healthcare Equity and Robustness), a framework designed to systematically intervene on all four causal paths. To achieve this, CIPHER utilizes a diffusion backbone equipped with classifier-free guidance and null-text inversion. This technical design enables the faithful reconstruction of patient-specific anatomy while allowing for the precise, editable synthesis of counterfactuals required to break sensitive dependency chains. We tested CIPHER using chest X-ray and dermoscopy benchmarks across both standard and shifted data distributions. By employing a multi-pathway intervention strategy, our model reduced worst-group disparities by an average of 35.8% compared to disease-conditioned synthesis baselines, while also improving total diagnostic accuracy

ToMPC: Task-oriented Model Predictive Control via ADMM for Safe Robotic Manipulation

This paper proposes a task-oriented model predictive control (ToMPC) framework for safe and efficient robotic manipulation in open workspaces. The framework unifies collision-free motion and robot-environment interaction to address diverse scenarios. Additionally, it introduces task-oriented obstacle avoidance that leverages kinematic redundancy to enhance manipulation efficiency in obstructed environments. This complex optimization problem is solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), which decomposes the problem into two subproblems tackled by differential dynamic programming (DDP) and quadratic programming (QP), respectively. The effectiveness of this approach is validated in simulation and hardware experiments on a Franka Panda robotic manipulator. Results demonstrate that the framework can plan motion and/or force trajectories in real time, maximize the manipulation range while avoiding obstacles, and strictly adhere to safety-related hard constraints.

A Hierarchical Bayesian Framework for Model-based Prognostics

In prognostics and health management (PHM) of engineered systems, maintenance decisions are ideally informed by predictions of a system's remaining useful life (RUL) based on operational data. Model-based prognostics algorithms rely on a parametric model of the system degradation process. The model parameters are learned from real-time operational data collected on the system. However, there can be valuable information in data from similar systems or components, which is not typically utilized in PHM. In this contribution, we propose a hierarchical Bayesian modeling (HBM) framework for PHM that integrates both operational data and run-to-failure data from similar systems or components. The HBM framework utilizes hyperparameter distributions learned from data of similar systems or components as priors. It enables efficient updates of predictions as more information becomes available, allowing for increasingly accurate assessments of the degradation process and its associated variability. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through two experimental applications involving real-world data from crack growth and lithium battery degradation. Results show significant improvements in RUL prediction accuracy and demonstrate how the framework facilitates uncertainty management through predictive distributions.

Structured Personality Control and Adaptation for LLM Agents

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly shaping human-computer interaction (HCI), from personalized assistants to social simulations. Beyond language competence, researchers are exploring whether LLMs can exhibit human-like characteristics that influence engagement, decision-making, and perceived realism. Personality, in particular, is critical, yet existing approaches often struggle to achieve both nuanced and adaptable expression. We present a framework that models LLM personality via Jungian psychological types, integrating three mechanisms: a dominant-auxiliary coordination mechanism for coherent core expression, a reinforcement-compensation mechanism for temporary adaptation to context, and a reflection mechanism that drives long-term personality evolution. This design allows the agent to maintain nuanced traits while dynamically adjusting to interaction demands and gradually updating its underlying structure. Personality alignment is evaluated using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator questionnaires and tested under diverse challenge scenarios as a preliminary structured assessment. Findings suggest that evolving, personality-aware LLMs can support coherent, context-sensitive interactions, enabling naturalistic agent design in HCI.

Macroscopic quantum states, quantum phase transition for $N$ three-level atoms in an optical cavity -- Gauge principle and non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

We study in this paper the quantum phase transition (QPT) from normal phase (NP) to superradiant phase (SP) for $N$ three-level atoms in a single-mode optical cavity for both Hermitian and non Hermitian Hamiltonians, where the $Ξ$-type three-level atom is described by spin-$1$ pseudo-spin operators. The long standing gauge-choice ambiguity of $\mathbf{A\cdot p}$ and $\mathbf{d\cdot E}$ called respectively the Coulomb and dipole gauges is resolved by the time-dependent gauge transformation on the Schrödinger equation. Both $\mathbf{A\cdot p}$ and $\mathbf{d\cdot E}$ interactions are included in the unified gauge, which is truly gauge equivalent to the minimum coupling principle. The Coulomb and dipole interactions are just the special cases of unified gauge. Remarkably three interactions lead to the same results under the resonant condition of field-atom frequencies, while significant difference appears in red and blue detunings. The QPT is analyzed in terms of spin coherent-state variational method, which indicates the abrupt changes of energy spectrum, average photon number as well as the atomic population at the critical point of interaction constant. Crucially, we reveal the sensitive dependence on the initial optical-phase, which is particularly useful to test the validity of three gauges experimentally. The non-Hermitian atom-field interaction results in the exceptional point (EP), beyond which the semiclassical energy function becomes complex. However the energy spectrum of variational ground state is real in the absence of EP, and does not become complex. The superradiant state is unstable due to the non-Hermitian interaction induced photon-number loss. Thus only the NP exists in the non-Hermitian Dicke Model Hamiltonian.

CAT-ID$^2$: Category-Tree Integrated Document Identifier Learning for Generative Retrieval In E-commerce

Generative retrieval (GR) has gained significant attention as an effective paradigm that integrates the capabilities of large language models (LLMs). It generally consists of two stages: constructing discrete semantic identifiers (IDs) for documents and retrieving documents by autoregressively generating ID tokens. The core challenge in GR is how to construct document IDs (DocIDS) with strong representational power. Good IDs should exhibit two key properties: similar documents should have more similar IDs, and each document should maintain a distinct and unique ID. However, most existing methods ignore native category information, which is common and critical in E-commerce. Therefore, we propose a novel ID learning method, CAtegory-Tree Integrated Document IDentifier (CAT-ID$^2$), incorporating prior category information into the semantic IDs. CAT-ID$^2$ includes three key modules: a Hierarchical Class Constraint Loss to integrate category information layer by layer during quantization, a Cluster Scale Constraint Loss for uniform ID token distribution, and a Dispersion Loss to improve the distinction of reconstructed documents. These components enable CAT-ID$^2$ to generate IDs that make similar documents more alike while preserving the uniqueness of different documents' representations. Extensive offline and online experiments confirm the effectiveness of our method, with online A/B tests showing a 0.33% increase in average orders per thousand users for ambiguous intent queries and 0.24% for long-tail queries.

Multi-layered Safety of Redundant Robot Manipulators via Task-oriented Planning and Control

Ensuring safety is crucial to promote the application of robot manipulators in open workspaces. Factors such as sensor errors or unpredictable collisions make the environment full of uncertainties. In this work, we investigate these potential safety challenges on redundant robot manipulators, and propose a task-oriented planning and control framework to achieve multi-layered safety while maintaining efficient task execution. Our approach consists of two main parts: a task-oriented trajectory planner based on multiple-shooting model predictive control (MPC) method, and a torque controller that allows safe and efficient collision reaction using only proprioceptive data. Through extensive simulations and real-hardware experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed framework can effectively handle uncertain static or dynamic obstacles, and perform disturbance resistance in manipulation tasks when unforeseen contacts occur.

IterQR: An Iterative Framework for LLM-based Query Rewrite in e-Commercial Search System

The essence of modern e-Commercial search system lies in matching user's intent and available candidates depending on user's query, providing personalized and precise service. However, user's query may be incorrect due to ambiguous input and typo, leading to inaccurate search. These cases may be released by query rewrite: modify query to other representation or expansion. However, traditional query rewrite replies on static rewrite vocabulary, which is manually established meanwhile lacks interaction with both domain knowledge in e-Commercial system and common knowledge in the real world. In this paper, with the ability to generate text content of Large Language Models (LLMs), we provide an iterative framework to generate query rewrite. The framework incorporates a 3-stage procedure in each iteration: Rewrite Generation with domain knowledge by Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and query understanding by Chain-of-Thoughts (CoT); Online Signal Collection with automatic positive rewrite update; Post-training of LLM with multi task objective to generate new rewrites. Our work (named as IterQR) provides a comprehensive framework to generate \textbf{Q}uery \textbf{R}ewrite with both domain / real-world knowledge. It automatically update and self-correct the rewrites during \textbf{iter}ations. \method{} has been deployed in Meituan Delivery's search system (China's leading food delivery platform), providing service for users with significant improvement.

Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling for Uncertainty Quantification and Reliability Updating using Data

Quantifying uncertainty and updating reliability are essential for ensuring the safety and performance of engineering systems. This study develops a hierarchical Bayesian modeling (HBM) framework to quantify uncertainty and update reliability using data. By leveraging the probabilistic structure of HBM, the approach provides a robust solution for integrating model uncertainties and parameter variability into reliability assessments. The framework is applied to a linear mathematical model and a dynamical structural model. For the linear model, analytical solutions are derived for the hyper parameters and reliability, offering an efficient and precise means of uncertainty quantification and reliability evaluation. In the dynamical structural model, the posterior distributions of hyper parameters obtained from the HBM are used directly to update the reliability. This approach relies on the updated posteriors to reflect the influence of system uncertainties and dynamic behavior in the reliability predictions. The proposed approach demonstrates significant advantages over traditional Bayesian inference by addressing multi-source uncertainty in both static and dynamic contexts. This work highlights the versatility and computational efficiency of the HBM framework, establishing it as a powerful tool for uncertainty quantification and reliability updating in structural health monitoring and other engineering applications.

RETVec: Resilient and Efficient Text Vectorizer

This paper describes RETVec, an efficient, resilient, and multilingual text vectorizer designed for neural-based text processing. RETVec combines a novel character encoding with an optional small embedding model to embed words into a 256-dimensional vector space. The RETVec embedding model is pre-trained using pair-wise metric learning to be robust against typos and character-level adversarial attacks. In this paper, we evaluate and compare RETVec to state-of-the-art vectorizers and word embeddings on popular model architectures and datasets. These comparisons demonstrate that RETVec leads to competitive, multilingual models that are significantly more resilient to typos and adversarial text attacks. A programmable topological photonic chip

Controlling topological phases of light has allowed experimental observations of abundant topological phenomena and development of robust photonic devices. The prospect of more sophisticated controls with topological photonic devices for practical implementations requires high-level programmability. Here, we demonstrate a fully programmable topological photonic chip with large-scale integration of silicon photonic nanocircuits and microresonators. Photonic artificial atoms and their interactions in our compound system can be individually addressed and controlled, therefore allowing arbitrary altering of structural parameters and geometrical configurations for the observations of dynamic topological phase transitions and diverse photonic topological insulators. By individually programming artificial atoms on the generic chip, it has allowed comprehensive statistic characterisations of topological robustness against relatively weak disorders, as well as counterintuitive topological Anderson phase transitions induced by strong disorders. Our generic topological photonic chip that can be rapidly reprogrammed to implement multifunctionalities, prototypes a flexible and versatile platform for possible applications across fundamental science and topological technologies.

Enhanced Robust Motion Control based on Unknown System Dynamics Estimator for Robot Manipulators

To achieve high-accuracy manipulation in the presence of unknown disturbances, we propose two novel efficient and robust motion control schemes for high-dimensional robot manipulators. Both controllers incorporate an unknown system dynamics estimator (USDE) to estimate disturbances without requiring acceleration signals and the inverse of inertia matrix. Then, based on the USDE framework, an adaptive-gain controller and a super-twisting sliding mode controller are designed to speed up the convergence of tracking errors and strengthen anti-perturbation ability. The former aims to enhance feedback portions through error-driven control gains, while the latter exploits finite-time convergence of discontinuous switching terms. We analyze the boundedness of control signals and the stability of the closed-loop system in theory, and conduct real hardware experiments on a robot manipulator with seven degrees of freedom (DoF). Experimental results verify the effectiveness and improved performance of the proposed controllers, and also show the feasibility of implementation on high-dimensional robots.

A Novel Dual-pooling Attention Module for UAV Vehicle Re-identification

Vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) involves identifying the same vehicle captured by other cameras, given a vehicle image. It plays a crucial role in the development of safe cities and smart cities. With the rapid growth and implementation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) technology, vehicle Re-ID in UAV aerial photography scenes has garnered significant attention from researchers. However, due to the high altitude of UAVs, the shooting angle of vehicle images sometimes approximates vertical, resulting in fewer local features for Re-ID. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel dual-pooling attention (DpA) module, which achieves the extraction and enhancement of locally important information about vehicles from both channel and spatial dimensions by constructing two branches of channel-pooling attention (CpA) and spatial-pooling attention (SpA), and employing multiple pooling operations to enhance the attention to fine-grained information of vehicles. Specifically, the CpA module operates between the channels of the feature map and splices features by combining four pooling operations so that vehicle regions containing discriminative information are given greater attention. The SpA module uses the same pooling operations strategy to identify discriminative representations and merge vehicle features in image regions in a weighted manner. The feature information of both dimensions is finally fused and trained jointly using label smoothing cross-entropy loss and hard mining triplet loss, thus solving the problem of missing detail information due to the high height of UAV shots. The proposed method's effectiveness is demonstrated through extensive experiments on the UAV-based vehicle datasets VeRi-UAV and VRU.

LLVIP: A Visible-infrared Paired Dataset for Low-light Vision

It is very challenging for various visual tasks such as image fusion, pedestrian detection and image-to-image translation in low light conditions due to the loss of effective target areas. In this case, infrared and visible images can be used together to provide both rich detail information and effective target areas. In this paper, we present LLVIP, a visible-infrared paired dataset for low-light vision. This dataset contains 30976 images, or 15488 pairs, most of which were taken at very dark scenes, and all of the images are strictly aligned in time and space. Pedestrians in the dataset are labeled. We compare the dataset with other visible-infrared datasets and evaluate the performance of some popular visual algorithms including image fusion, pedestrian detection and image-to-image translation on the dataset. The experimental results demonstrate the complementary effect of fusion on image information, and find the deficiency of existing algorithms of the three visual tasks in very low-light conditions. We believe the LLVIP dataset will contribute to the community of computer vision by promoting image fusion, pedestrian detection and image-to-image translation in very low-light applications. The dataset is being released in https://bupt-ai-cz.github.io/LLVIP. Raw data is also provided for further research such as image registration.

BCI: Breast Cancer Immunohistochemical Image Generation through Pyramid Pix2pix

The evaluation of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression is essential to formulate a precise treatment for breast cancer. The routine evaluation of HER2 is conducted with immunohistochemical techniques (IHC), which is very expensive. Therefore, for the first time, we propose a breast cancer immunohistochemical (BCI) benchmark attempting to synthesize IHC data directly with the paired hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained images. The dataset contains 4870 registered image pairs, covering a variety of HER2 expression levels. Based on BCI, as a minor contribution, we further build a pyramid pix2pix image generation method, which achieves better HE to IHC translation results than the other current popular algorithms. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BCI poses new challenges to the existing image translation research. Besides, BCI also opens the door for future pathology studies in HER2 expression evaluation based on the synthesized IHC images. BCI dataset can be downloaded from https://bupt-ai-cz.github.io/BCI.
