DiLogics: Creating Web Automation Programs With Diverse Logics

Knowledge workers frequently encounter repetitive web data entry tasks, like updating records or placing orders. Web automation increases productivity, but translating tasks to web actions accurately and extending to new specifications is challenging. Existing tools can automate tasks that perform the same logical trace of UI actions (e.g., input text in each field in order), but do not support tasks requiring different executions based on varied input conditions. We present DiLogics, a programming-by-demonstration system that utilizes NLP to assist users in creating web automation programs that handle diverse specifications. DiLogics first semantically segments input data to structured task steps. By recording user demonstrations for each step, DiLogics generalizes the web macros to novel but semantically similar task requirements. Our evaluation showed that non-experts can effectively use DiLogics to create automation programs that fulfill diverse input instructions. DiLogics provides an efficient, intuitive, and expressive method for developing web automation programs satisfying diverse specifications.

PIMCOMP: A Universal Compilation Framework for Crossbar-based PIM DNN Accelerators

Crossbar-based PIM DNN accelerators can provide massively parallel in-situ operations. A specifically designed compiler is important to achieve high performance for a wide variety of DNN workloads. However, some key compilation issues such as parallelism considerations, weight replication selection, and array mapping methods have not been solved. In this work, we propose PIMCOMP - a universal compilation framework for NVM crossbar-based PIM DNN accelerators. PIMCOMP is built on an abstract PIM accelerator architecture, which is compatible with the widely used Crossbar/IMA/Tile/Chip hierarchy. On this basis, we propose four general compilation stages for crossbar-based PIM accelerators: node partitioning, weight replicating, core mapping, and dataflow scheduling. We design two compilation modes with different inter-layer pipeline granularities to support high-throughput and low-latency application scenarios, respectively. Our experimental results show that PIMCMOP yields improvements of 1.6$\times$ and 2.4$\times$ in throughput and latency, respectively, relative to PUMA.

A Badminton Recognition and Tracking System Based on Context Multi-feature Fusion

Ball recognition and tracking have traditionally been the main focus of computer vision researchers as a crucial component of sports video analysis. The difficulties, such as the small ball size, blurry appearance, quick movements, and so on, prevent many classic methods from performing well on ball detection and tracking. In this paper, we present a method for detecting and tracking badminton balls. According to the characteristics of different ball speeds, two trajectory clip trackers are designed based on different rules to capture the correct trajectory of the ball. Meanwhile, combining contextual information, two rounds of detection from coarse-grained to fine-grained are used to solve the challenges encountered in badminton detection. The experimental results show that the precision, recall, and F1-measure of our method, reach 100%, 72.6% and 84.1% with the data without occlusion, respectively.

Green Steganalyzer: A Green Learning Approach to Image Steganalysis

A novel learning solution to image steganalysis based on the green learning paradigm, called Green Steganalyzer (GS), is proposed in this work. GS consists of three modules: 1) pixel-based anomaly prediction, 2) embedding location detection, and 3) decision fusion for image-level detection. In the first module, GS decomposes an image into patches, adopts Saab transforms for feature extraction, and conducts self-supervised learning to predict an anomaly score of their center pixel. In the second module, GS analyzes the anomaly scores of a pixel and its neighborhood to find pixels of higher embedding probabilities. In the third module, GS focuses on pixels of higher embedding probabilities and fuses their anomaly scores to make final image-level classification. Compared with state-of-the-art deep-learning models, GS achieves comparable detection performance against S-UNIWARD, WOW and HILL steganography schemes with significantly lower computational complexity and a smaller model size, making it attractive for mobile/edge applications. Furthermore, GS is mathematically transparent because of its modular design.

Document-Level Multi-Event Extraction with Event Proxy Nodes and Hausdorff Distance Minimization

Document-level multi-event extraction aims to extract the structural information from a given document automatically. Most recent approaches usually involve two steps: (1) modeling entity interactions; (2) decoding entity interactions into events. However, such approaches ignore a global view of inter-dependency of multiple events. Moreover, an event is decoded by iteratively merging its related entities as arguments, which might suffer from error propagation and is computationally inefficient. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach for document-level multi-event extraction with event proxy nodes and Hausdorff distance minimization. The event proxy nodes, representing pseudo-events, are able to build connections with other event proxy nodes, essentially capturing global information. The Hausdorff distance makes it possible to compare the similarity between the set of predicted events and the set of ground-truth events. By directly minimizing Hausdorff distance, the model is trained towards the global optimum directly, which improves performance and reduces training time. Experimental results show that our model outperforms previous state-of-the-art method in F1-score on two datasets with only a fraction of training time.

Evidence of Inter-state Coordination amongst State-backed Information Operations

Since 2018, Twitter has steadily released into the public domain content discovered on the platform and believed to be associated with information operations originating from more than a dozen state-backed organizations. Leveraging this dataset, we explore inter-state coordination amongst state-backed information operations and find evidence of intentional, strategic interaction amongst thirteen different states, separate and distinct from within-state operations. We find that coordinated, inter-state information operations attract greater engagement than baseline information operations and appear to come online in service to specific aims. We explore these ideas in depth through two case studies on the coordination between Cuba and Venezuela, and between Russia and Iran.

Anomaly Segmentation for High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images Based on Pixel Descriptors

Anomaly segmentation in high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing imagery is aimed at segmenting anomaly patterns of the earth deviating from normal patterns, which plays an important role in various Earth vision applications. However, it is a challenging task due to the complex distribution and the irregular shapes of objects, and the lack of abnormal samples. To tackle these problems, an anomaly segmentation model based on pixel descriptors (ASD) is proposed for anomaly segmentation in HSR imagery. Specifically, deep one-class classification is introduced for anomaly segmentation in the feature space with discriminative pixel descriptors. The ASD model incorporates the data argument for generating virtual ab-normal samples, which can force the pixel descriptors to be compact for normal data and meanwhile to be diverse to avoid the model collapse problems when only positive samples participated in the training. In addition, the ASD introduced a multi-level and multi-scale feature extraction strategy for learning the low-level and semantic information to make the pixel descriptors feature-rich. The proposed ASD model was validated using four HSR datasets and compared with the recent state-of-the-art models, showing its potential value in Earth vision applications.

Multi-level decision framework collision avoidance algorithm in emergency scenarios

With the rapid development of autonomous driving, the attention of academia has increasingly focused on the development of anti-collision systems in emergency scenarios, which have a crucial impact on driving safety. While numerous anti-collision strategies have emerged in recent years, most of them only consider steering or braking. The dynamic and complex nature of the driving environment presents a challenge to developing robust collision avoidance algorithms in emergency scenarios. To address the complex, dynamic obstacle scene and improve lateral maneuverability, this paper establishes a multi-level decision-making obstacle avoidance framework that employs the safe distance model and integrates emergency steering and emergency braking to complete the obstacle avoidance process. This approach helps avoid the high-risk situation of vehicle instability that can result from the separation of steering and braking actions. In the emergency steering algorithm, we define the collision hazard moment and propose a multi-constraint dynamic collision avoidance planning method that considers the driving area. Simulation results demonstrate that the decision-making collision avoidance logic can be applied to dynamic collision avoidance scenarios in complex traffic situations, effectively completing the obstacle avoidance task in emergency scenarios and improving the safety of autonomous driving.

Temporal Aggregation and Propagation Graph Neural Networks for Dynamic Representation

Temporal graphs exhibit dynamic interactions between nodes over continuous time, whose topologies evolve with time elapsing. The whole temporal neighborhood of nodes reveals the varying preferences of nodes. However, previous works usually generate dynamic representation with limited neighbors for simplicity, which results in both inferior performance and high latency of online inference. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel method of temporal graph convolution with the whole neighborhood, namely Temporal Aggregation and Propagation Graph Neural Networks (TAP-GNN). Specifically, we firstly analyze the computational complexity of the dynamic representation problem by unfolding the temporal graph in a message-passing paradigm. The expensive complexity motivates us to design the AP (aggregation and propagation) block, which significantly reduces the repeated computation of historical neighbors. The final TAP-GNN supports online inference in the graph stream scenario, which incorporates the temporal information into node embeddings with a temporal activation function and a projection layer besides several AP blocks. Experimental results on various real-life temporal networks show that our proposed TAP-GNN outperforms existing temporal graph methods by a large margin in terms of both predictive performance and online inference latency. Our code is available at \url{https://github.com/doujiang-zheng/TAP-GNN}.

Transition Propagation Graph Neural Networks for Temporal Networks

Researchers of temporal networks (e.g., social networks and transaction networks) have been interested in mining dynamic patterns of nodes from their diverse interactions. Inspired by recently powerful graph mining methods like skip-gram models and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), existing approaches focus on generating temporal node embeddings sequentially with nodes' sequential interactions. However, the sequential modeling of previous approaches cannot handle the transition structure between nodes' neighbors with limited memorization capacity. Detailedly, an effective method for the transition structures is required to both model nodes' personalized patterns adaptively and capture node dynamics accordingly. In this paper, we propose a method, namely Transition Propagation Graph Neural Networks (TIP-GNN), to tackle the challenges of encoding nodes' transition structures. The proposed TIP-GNN focuses on the bilevel graph structure in temporal networks: besides the explicit interaction graph, a node's sequential interactions can also be constructed as a transition graph. Based on the bilevel graph, TIP-GNN further encodes transition structures by multi-step transition propagation and distills information from neighborhoods by a bilevel graph convolution. Experimental results over various temporal networks reveal the efficiency of our TIP-GNN, with at most 7.2\% improvements of accuracy on temporal link prediction. Extensive ablation studies further verify the effectiveness and limitations of the transition propagation module. Our code is available at \url{https://github.com/doujiang-zheng/TIP-GNN}.

One-Step Detection Paradigm for Hyperspectral Anomaly Detection via Spectral Deviation Relationship Learning

Hyperspectral anomaly detection (HAD) involves identifying the targets that deviate spectrally from their surroundings, without prior knowledge. Recently, deep learning based methods have become the mainstream HAD methods, due to their powerful spatial-spectral feature extraction ability. However, the current deep detection models are optimized to complete a proxy task (two-step paradigm), such as background reconstruction or generation, rather than achieving anomaly detection directly. This leads to suboptimal results and poor transferability, which means that the deep model is trained and tested on the same image. In this paper, an unsupervised transferred direct detection (TDD) model is proposed, which is optimized directly for the anomaly detection task (one-step paradigm) and has transferability. Specially, the TDD model is optimized to identify the spectral deviation relationship according to the anomaly definition. Compared to learning the specific background distribution as most models do, the spectral deviation relationship is universal for different images and guarantees the model transferability. To train the TDD model in an unsupervised manner, an anomaly sample simulation strategy is proposed to generate numerous pairs of anomaly samples. Furthermore, a global self-attention module and a local self-attention module are designed to help the model focus on the "spectrally deviating" relationship. The TDD model was validated on four public HAD datasets. The results show that the proposed TDD model can successfully overcome the limitation of traditional model training and testing on a single image, and the model has a powerful detection ability and excellent transferability.

Talagrand's transportation inequality for SPDEs with locally monotone drifts

The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we prove transportation inequalities ${\bf T_2}(C)$ on the space of continuous paths with respect to the uniform metric for the law of the solution to a class of non-linear monotone stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by the Wiener noise. Furthermore, we also establish the ${\bf T_1}(C)$ property for such SPDEs but with merely locally monotone coefficients, including the stochastic Burgers type equation and stochastic $2$-D Navier-Stokes equation.

Maximum Entropy Estimator for Hidden Markov Models: Reduction to Dimension 2

In the paper, we introduce the maximum entropy estimator based on 2-dimensional empirical distribution of the observation sequence of hidden Markov model , when the sample size is big: in that case computing the maximum likelihood estimator is too consuming in time by the classical Baum-Welch EM algorithm. We prove the consistency and the asymptotic normality of the maximum entropy estimator in a quite general framework, where the asymptotic covariance matrix is explicitly estimated in terms of the 2-dimensional Fisher information. To complement it, the 2-dimensional relative entropy is skillfully used to study the hypotheses testing problem. Furthermore, we propose 2-dimensional maximum entropy algorithm for finding the maximum entropy estimator, which works for very large observation dataset and large hidden states set. Some numerical examples are furnished and commented for illustrating our theoretical results.

First-Order Modal $ξ$-Calculus: On the Aspects of Application and Bisimulation

This paper proposes first-order modal $ξ$-calculus as well as genealogical Kripke models. Inspired by modal $μ$-calculus, first-order modal $ξ$-calculus takes a quite similar form and extends its inductive expressivity onto a different dimension. We elaborate on several vivid examples that demonstrate this logic's profound utility, especially for depicting genealogy of concurrent computer processes. Bisimulation notion for the logic has also been thoroughly examined.

Improving Named Entity Recognition by External Context Retrieving and Cooperative Learning

Recent advances in Named Entity Recognition (NER) show that document-level contexts can significantly improve model performance. In many application scenarios, however, such contexts are not available. In this paper, we propose to find external contexts of a sentence by retrieving and selecting a set of semantically relevant texts through a search engine, with the original sentence as the query. We find empirically that the contextual representations computed on the retrieval-based input view, constructed through the concatenation of a sentence and its external contexts, can achieve significantly improved performance compared to the original input view based only on the sentence. Furthermore, we can improve the model performance of both input views by Cooperative Learning, a training method that encourages the two input views to produce similar contextual representations or output label distributions. Experiments show that our approach can achieve new state-of-the-art performance on 8 NER data sets across 5 domains.

Named Entity and Relation Extraction with Multi-Modal Retrieval

Multi-modal named entity recognition (NER) and relation extraction (RE) aim to leverage relevant image information to improve the performance of NER and RE. Most existing efforts largely focused on directly extracting potentially useful information from images (such as pixel-level features, identified objects, and associated captions). However, such extraction processes may not be knowledge aware, resulting in information that may not be highly relevant. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-modal Retrieval based framework (MoRe). MoRe contains a text retrieval module and an image-based retrieval module, which retrieve related knowledge of the input text and image in the knowledge corpus respectively. Next, the retrieval results are sent to the textual and visual models respectively for predictions. Finally, a Mixture of Experts (MoE) module combines the predictions from the two models to make the final decision. Our experiments show that both our textual model and visual model can achieve state-of-the-art performance on four multi-modal NER datasets and one multi-modal RE dataset. With MoE, the model performance can be further improved and our analysis demonstrates the benefits of integrating both textual and visual cues for such tasks.

On Three-Valued Modal Logics: from a Four-Valued Perspective

This paper aims at providing a comprehensive solution to the archaic open problem: how to define semantics of three-valued modal logic with vivid intuitive picture, convincing philosophical justification as well as versatile practical usage. Based on an existing line of work concerned with investigating three-valued logic out of innovative angles of view, we adopt a detour approach to interpret three-valued logic from a four-valued perspective, which results in the invention of an universal and systematic methodology for developing, explaining as well as utilizing three-valued modal logic. We illustrate our method through two concrete cases, one deontic and another epistemic, for both of which a sound and strongly complete natural deduction proof system is also presented in detail. We perceive our three-valued modal logic as a lightweight candidate to merge deontic or epistemic notion into temporal logic, without heavier burden of multiple modalities.
