Large eddy simulation/probability density function simulations of the Cambridge turbulent stratified flame series under swirling conditions

The LES/PDF methodology is applied to the Cambridge/Sandia turbulent stratified flame series under swirling conditions. The methane/air chemistry is represented by a 16-species reduced ARM1 mechanism, and the in situ adaptive tabulation method is adopted to accelerate the chemistry calculation. Effects of differential diffusion and heat loss through the bluffbody surface are taken into account. The simulations are conducted for premixed (SwB3), moderately and highly stratified (SwB7 and SwB11, respectively) cases under swirling conditions. The results from LES/PDF simulations are compared with experimental measurements. The computed mean and r.m.s. profiles of velocity, temperature, equivalence ratio and mass fractions of species are in very good agreement with the measurements for all three conditions. Scatter plots and conditional means of species mole fractions and temperature are compared with the experimental data, where overall good consistency with the measurements is achieved. The recirculation zones are five times longer than those obtained under non-swirling conditions. A low-equivalence-ratio high-temperature region near the bluffbody is not captured in the computation, which is attributed to the insuffcient entrainment of downstream mixtures into the recirculation zone. The parametric studies show that the differential diffusion has a negligible effect on the mean and r.m.s. results, whereas the heat loss has a considerable effect on the temperature and CO profiles close to the bluffbody.

Coherent electron transport in silicon quantum dots

With silicon being the go-to material for spin qubits, and motivated by the demand of a scalable quantum computer architecture for fast and reliable quantum information transfer on-chip, we study coherent electron transport in a silicon double quantum dot. We first examine the valley-orbital dynamics in a silicon double dot, and discuss how to properly measure the tunnel couplings as well as the valley phase difference between two quantum dots. We then focus on possible phase and spin flip errors during spin transport across a silicon double dot. In particular, we clarify correction on the effective $g$-factor for the electron spin from the double dot confinement potential, and quantify the resulting phase error. We then study spin fidelity loss due to spin-valley mixing, which is a unique feature of silicon quantum dots. We show that a small phase correction between valleys can cause a significant coherence loss. We also investigate spin flip errors caused by either an external inhomogeneous magnetic field or the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We show that the presence of valleys makes it possible to have much broader (in terms of interdot detuning) level anti-crossings compared to typical anti-crossings in, for example, a GaAs double dot, and such broad anti-crossings lead to amplification of spin flip errors. Lastly, we design a pulse sequence to suppress various possible spin flip errors by taking advantage of the multiple level anti-crossings in a silicon double dot and employing Landau-Zener transitions.

Nutational resonances, transitional precession, and precession-averaged evolution in binary black-hole systems

In the post-Newtonian (PN) regime, the timescale on which the spins of binary black holes precess is much shorter than the radiation-reaction timescale on which the black holes inspiral to smaller separations. On the precession timescale, the angle between the total and orbital angular momenta oscillates with nutation period $τ$, during which the orbital angular momentum precesses about the total angular momentum by an angle $α$. This defines two distinct frequencies that vary on the radiation-reaction timescale: the nutation frequency $ω\equiv 2π/τ$ and the precession frequency $Ω\equiv α/τ$. We use analytic solutions for generic spin precession at 2PN order to derive Fourier series for the total and orbital angular momenta in which each term is a sinusoid with frequency $Ω- nω$ for integer $n$. As black holes inspiral, they can pass through nutational resonances ($Ω= nω$) at which the total angular momentum tilts. We derive an approximate expression for this tilt angle and show that it is usually less than $10^{-3}$ radians for nutational resonances at binary separations $r > 10M$. The large tilts occurring during transitional precession (near zero total angular momentum) are a consequence of such states being approximate $n=0$ nutational resonances. Our new Fourier series for the total and orbital angular momenta converge rapidly with $n$ providing an intuitive and computationally efficient approach to understanding generic precession that may facilitate future calculations of gravitational waveforms in the PN regime.

Toward high-fidelity coherent electron spin transport in a GaAs double quantum dot

In this paper, we investigate how to achieve high-fidelity electron spin transport in a GaAs double quantum dot. Our study examines spin transport from multiple perspectives. We first study how a double dot potential may affect/accelerate spin relaxation. We calculate spin relaxation rate in a wide range of experimental parameters and focus on the occurrence of spin hot spots. A safe parameter regime is identified in order to avoid these spin hot spots. We also study the non-adiabatic transitions in the Landau-Zener process of sweeping the interdot detuning, and propose a scheme to take advantage of possible Landau-Zener-Stükelburg interference to achieve high-fidelity spin transport at a higher speed. Finally, we calculate the double-dot correction on the effective $g$-factor for the tunneling electron, and estimate the resulting phase error between different spin states. Our results should provide a useful guidance for future experiments on coherent electron spin transport.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Quantum Open Systems Embedded in a Hybrid Environment

Quantum systems of interest are typically coupled to several quantum channels (more generally environments). In this paper, we develop an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation for an open quantum system coupled to a hybrid environment containing both bosonic and fermionic particles. Such a stochastic differential equation may be obtained directly from a microscopic model through employing a classical complex Gaussian noise and a non-commutative fermionic noise to simulate the hybrid bath. As an immediate application of our developed stochastic approach, we show that the evolution of the reduced density matrix can be derived by taking the average over both the bosonic noise and the fermionic noise. Three specific examples are given in this paper to illustrate that the hybrid quantum trajectory is fully consistent with the standard quantum mechanics. Our examples also shed new light on the special features exhibited by the fermionic bath and bosnoic bath.

Memory effect induced macroscopic-microscopic entanglement

We study optomechanical entanglement between an optical cavity field and a movable mirror coupled to a non-Markovian environment. The non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) approach and the non-Markovian master equation are shown to be useful in investigating the entanglement generation between the cavity field and the movable mirror. The simple model presented in this paper demonstrates several interesting properties of optomechanical entanglement that are associated with environment memory effects. It is evident that the effective environment central frequency can be used to modulate the optomechanical entanglement. In addition, we show that the maximum entanglement may be achieved by properly choosing the effective detuning which is significantly dependent on the strength of the memory effect of the environment.

Phonon mediated spin relaxation in a moving quantum dot: Doppler shift, Cherenkov radiation, and spin relaxation boom

We study relaxation of a moving spin qubit caused by phonon noise. As we vary the speed of the qubit, we observe several interesting features in spin relaxation and the associated phonon emission, induced by Doppler effect. In particular, in the supersonic regime, the phonons emitted by the relaxing qubit is concentrated along certain directions, similar to the shock waves produced in classical Cherenkov effect. As the speed of the moving qubit increases from the subsonic regime to the supersonic regime, the qubit experiences a peak in the spin relaxation rate near the speed of sound, which we term a spin relaxation boom in analogy to the classical sonic boom. We also find that the moving spin qubit may have a lower relaxation rate than a static qubit, which hints at the possibility of coherence-preserving transportation for a spin qubit. While the physics we have studied here has strong classical analogies, we do find that quantum confinement for the spin qubit plays an important role in all the phenomena we observe. Specifically, it produces a correction on the Cherenkov angle, and removes the divergence in relaxation rate at the sonic barrier. It is our hope that our results would encourage further research into approaches for transferring and preserving quantum information in spin qubit architectures.

Perturbation Methods for Non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion Equation

Two perturbation methods for the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) equation are investigated. The first perturbation method under investigation is based on a functional expansion of the NMQSD equation, while the second one expands the NMQSD equation in terms of the coupling strength. We have compared the advantages of the two methods based on bipartite systems where the accuracy of both perturbation methods can be examined by comparing the approximations with the exact solutions. Additionally, we provide an analytical solution for a special family of system's initial states, and the entanglement dynamics is discussed based on this solution.

Uhrig Dynamical Control of a Three-Level System Via Non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion

In this paper, we use the quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation to implement the Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) to a three-level quantum system coupled to a non-Markovian reservoir comprising of infinite numbers of degrees of freedom. For this purpose, we first reformulate the non-Markovian QSD to incorporate the effect of the external control fields. With this stochastic QSD approach, we demonstrate that an unknown state of the three-level quantum system can be universally protected against both colored phase and amplitude noises when the control-pulse sequences and control operators are properly designed. The advantage of using non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equations is that the control dynamics of open quantum systems can be treated exactly without using Trotter product formula and be efficiently simulated even when the environment comprise of infinite numbers of degrees of freedom. We also show how the control efficacy depends on the environment memory time and the designed time points of applied control pulses.

Environment-Assisted Quantum State Restoration Via Weak Measurement

In this paper, a new quantum state restoration scheme is proposed based on the environment-assisted error correction (EAEC) scheme. By introducing a weak measurement reversal (WMR) operation, we shall show how to recover an initial state of a quantum open system without invoking random unitary decompositions which are known to be absent in many important physical systems. We illustrate our new scheme and compare it with a scheme purely based on the WMR operation in the case of dissipative channel. In the proposed new scheme, the successful probability of recovering an unknown initial state can be significantly improved when the information obtained from an environment measurement is taken into account. Moreover, we show that the applicable range of our proposed scheme is wider than the EAEC scheme. Finally, the optimization of the successful probability for possible Kraus decompositions is discussed.

Non-Markovian Quantum Trajectories of Many-Body Quantum Open Systems

A long-standing open problem in non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) approach to open quantum systems is to establish the non-Markovian QSD equations for multiple qubit systems. In this paper, we settle this important question by explicitly constructing a set of exact time-local QSD equations for $N$-qubit systems. Our exact time-local (convolutionless) QSD equations have paved the way towards simulating quantum dynamics of many-body open systems interacting with a common bosonic environment. The applicability of this multiple-qubit stochastic equation is exemplified by numerically solving several quantum open many-body systems concerning quantum coherence dynamics and dynamical control.

Dynamics of coupled cavity arrays embedded in a non-Markovian bath

In this paper, the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of a coupled $N$-cavity model is studied based on the quantum state diffusion (QSD) approach. The time-local Diósi-Gisin-Strunz equation and the corresponding exact master equation are derived for the model consisting of a coupled cavity array. The resulting QSD equation serves as a stochastic solution to a genuine $N$-partite continuous-variable (CV) system. Several non-Markovian effects are studied in two interesting examples -- two-cavity and three-cavity, under different boundary conditions. We have shown that the environment-memory can facilitate the cat-like state transfer from one cavity to another in the case of a strongly non-Markovian environment.

Restoration of Quantum State in Dephasing Channel

In this paper, we propose an explicit scheme to fully recover a multiple-qubit state subject to a phase damping noise. We establish the theoretical framework and the operational procedure to restore an unknown initial quantum state for an N-qubit model interacting with either individual baths or a common bath. We give an explicit construction of the random unitary (RU) Kraus decomposition for an N-qubit model interacting with a common bath. We also demonstrate how to use only one unitary reversal operation to restore an arbitrary state with phase damping noise. In principle, the initial state can always be recovered with a success probability of 1. Interestingly, we found that non-RU decomposition can also be used to restore some particular entangled states. This may open a new path to restore a quantum state beyond the standard RU scheme.

Non-Markovian Fermionic Stochastic Schrödinger Equation for Open System Dynamics

In this paper we present an exact Grassmann stochastic Schrödinger equation for the dynamics of an open fermionic quantum system coupled to a reservoir consisting of a finite or infinite number of fermions. We use this stochastic approach to derive the exact master equation for a fermionic system strongly coupled to electronic reservoirs. The generality and applicability of this Grassmann stochastic approach is justified and exemplified by several quantum open system problems concerning quantum decoherence and quantum transport for both vacuum and finite-temperature fermionic reservoirs. We show that the quantum coherence property of the quantum dot system can be profoundly modified by the environment memory.

Time-Local Quantum-State-Diffusion Equation for Multilevel Quantum Dynamics

An open quantum system with multiple levels coupled to a bosonic environment at zero temperature is investigated systematically using the non-Markovian quantum-state-diffusion (QSD) method [W. T. Strunz, L. Diósi, and N. Gisin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1801 (1999)]. We have established exact time-local QSD equations for a set of interesting multilevel open systems, including high-spin systems, multiple-transition atomic models, and multilevel atomic models driven by time-dependent external fields. These exact QSD equations have paved the way to evaluate the dynamics of open multilevel atomic systems in the general non-Markovian regimes without any approximation.

Fermionic Stochastic Schrödinger Equation and Master Equation: An Open System Model

This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath, to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermion bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE), called fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced density operator for the open system can be recovered from the average of the solutions to the QSD equation over the Grassmann-type noise. By employing the exact fermionic QSD equation, we can derive the corresponding exact master equation. The power of our approach is illustrated by the applications of our stochastic approach to several models of interest including the one-qubit dissipative model, the coupled two-qubit dissipative model, the quantum Brownian motion model and the N-fermion model coupled to a fermionic bath. Different effects caused by the fermionic and bosonic baths on the dynamics of open systems are also discussed.

Dynamics of interacting qubits coupled to a common bath: Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach

Non-Markovian dynamics is studied for two interacting quibts strongly coupled to a dissipative bosonic environment. For the first time, we have derived the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation for the coupled two-qubit system without any approximations, and in particular, without the Markov approximation. As an application and illustration of our derived time-local QSD equation, we investigate the temporal behavior of quantum coherence dynamics. In particular, we find a strongly non-Markovian regime where entanglement generation is significantly modulated by the environmental memory. Additionally, we studied the residual entanglement in the steady state by analyzing the steady state solution of the QSD equation. Finally, we have discussed an approximate QSD equation.
