Leveraging CORAL-Correlation Consistency Network for Semi-Supervised Left Atrium MRI Segmentation

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has been widely used to learn from both a few labeled images and many unlabeled images to overcome the scarcity of labeled samples in medical image segmentation. Most current SSL-based segmentation methods use pixel values directly to identify similar features in labeled and unlabeled data. They usually fail to accurately capture the intricate attachment structures in the left atrium, such as the areas of inconsistent density or exhibit outward curvatures, adding to the complexity of the task. In this paper, we delve into this issue and introduce an effective solution, CORAL(Correlation-Aligned)-Correlation Consistency Network (CORN), to capture the global structure shape and local details of Left Atrium. Diverging from previous methods focused on each local pixel value, the CORAL-Correlation Consistency Module (CCM) in the CORN leverages second-order statistical information to capture global structural features by minimizing the distribution discrepancy between labeled and unlabeled samples in feature space. Yet, direct construction of features from unlabeled data frequently results in ``Sample Selection Bias'', leading to flawed supervision. We thus further propose the Dynamic Feature Pool (DFP) for the CCM, which utilizes a confidence-based filtering strategy to remove incorrectly selected features and regularize both teacher and student models by constraining the similarity matrix to be consistent. Extensive experiments on the Left Atrium dataset have shown that the proposed CORN outperforms previous state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning methods.

Constructing Mechanical Design Agent Based on Large Language Models

Since ancient times, mechanical design aids have been developed to assist human users, aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of design. However, even with the widespread use of contemporary Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems, there are still high learning costs, repetitive work, and other challenges. In recent years, the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) has introduced new productivity opportunities to the field of mechanical design. Yet, it remains unrealistic to rely on LLMs alone to complete mechanical design tasks directly. Through a series of explorations, we propose a method for constructing a comprehensive Mechanical Design Agent (MDA) by guiding LLM learning. To verify the validity of our proposed method, we conducted a series of experiments and presented relevant cases.

MARVEL: Unlocking the Multi-Modal Capability of Dense Retrieval via Visual Module Plugin

This paper proposes Multi-modAl Retrieval model via Visual modulE pLugin (MARVEL), which learns an embedding space for queries and multi-modal documents to conduct retrieval. MARVEL encodes queries and multi-modal documents with a unified encoder model, which helps to alleviate the modality gap between images and texts. Specifically, we enable the image understanding ability of the well-trained dense retriever, T5-ANCE, by incorporating the visual module's encoded image features as its inputs. To facilitate the multi-modal retrieval tasks, we build the ClueWeb22-MM dataset based on the ClueWeb22 dataset, which regards anchor texts as queries, and extracts the related text and image documents from anchor-linked web pages. Our experiments show that MARVEL significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the multi-modal retrieval dataset WebQA and ClueWeb22-MM. MARVEL provides an opportunity to broaden the advantages of text retrieval to the multi-modal scenario. Besides, we also illustrate that the language model has the ability to extract image semantics and partly map the image features to the input word embedding space. All codes are available at https://github.com/OpenMatch/MARVEL.

Towards Verifiable Generation: A Benchmark for Knowledge-aware Language Model Attribution

Although achieving great success, Large Language Models (LLMs) usually suffer from unreliable hallucinations. Although language attribution can be a potential solution, there are no suitable benchmarks and evaluation metrics to attribute LLMs to structured knowledge. In this paper, we define a new task of Knowledge-aware Language Model Attribution (KaLMA) that improves upon three core concerns with conventional attributed LMs. First, we extend attribution source from unstructured texts to Knowledge Graph (KG), whose rich structures benefit both the attribution performance and working scenarios. Second, we propose a new ``Conscious Incompetence" setting considering the incomplete knowledge repository, where the model identifies the need for supporting knowledge beyond the provided KG. Third, we propose a comprehensive automatic evaluation metric encompassing text quality, citation quality, and text citation alignment. To implement the above innovations, we build a dataset in biography domain BioKaLMA via evolutionary question generation strategy, to control the question complexity and necessary knowledge to the answer. For evaluation, we develop a baseline solution and demonstrate the room for improvement in LLMs' citation generation, emphasizing the importance of incorporating the "Conscious Incompetence" setting, and the critical role of retrieval accuracy.

AUTODIFF: Autoregressive Diffusion Modeling for Structure-based Drug Design

Structure-based drug design (SBDD), which aims to generate molecules that can bind tightly to the target protein, is an essential problem in drug discovery, and previous approaches have achieved initial success. However, most existing methods still suffer from invalid local structure or unrealistic conformation issues, which are mainly due to the poor leaning of bond angles or torsional angles. To alleviate these problems, we propose AUTODIFF, a diffusion-based fragment-wise autoregressive generation model. Specifically, we design a novel molecule assembly strategy named conformal motif that preserves the conformation of local structures of molecules first, then we encode the interaction of the protein-ligand complex with an SE(3)-equivariant convolutional network and generate molecules motif-by-motif with diffusion modeling. In addition, we also improve the evaluation framework of SBDD by constraining the molecular weights of the generated molecules in the same range, together with some new metrics, which make the evaluation more fair and practical. Extensive experiments on CrossDocked2020 demonstrate that our approach outperforms the existing models in generating realistic molecules with valid structures and conformations while maintaining high binding affinity.

Say More with Less: Understanding Prompt Learning Behaviors through Gist Compression

Large language models (LLMs) require lengthy prompts as the input context to produce output aligned with user intentions, a process that incurs extra costs during inference. In this paper, we propose the Gist COnditioned deCOding (Gist-COCO) model, introducing a novel method for compressing prompts which also can assist the prompt interpretation and engineering. Gist-COCO employs an encoder-decoder based language model and then incorporates an additional encoder as a plugin module to compress prompts with inputs using gist tokens. It finetunes the compression plugin module and uses the representations of gist tokens to emulate the raw prompts in the vanilla language model. By verbalizing the representations of gist tokens into gist prompts, the compression ability of Gist-COCO can be generalized to different LLMs with high compression rates. Our experiments demonstrate that Gist-COCO outperforms previous prompt compression models in both passage and instruction compression tasks. Further analysis on gist verbalization results suggests that our gist prompts serve different functions in aiding language models. They may directly provide potential answers, generate the chain-of-thought, or simply repeat the inputs. All data and codes are available at https://github.com/OpenMatch/Gist-COCO .

Data-Driven Modeling with Experimental Augmentation for the Modulation Strategy of the Dual-Active-Bridge Converter

For the performance modeling of power converters, the mainstream approaches are essentially knowledge-based, suffering from heavy manpower burden and low modeling accuracy. Recent emerging data-driven techniques greatly relieve human reliance by automatic modeling from simulation data. However, model discrepancy may occur due to unmodeled parasitics, deficient thermal and magnetic models, unpredictable ambient conditions, etc. These inaccurate data-driven models based on pure simulation cannot represent the practical performance in physical world, hindering their applications in power converter modeling. To alleviate model discrepancy and improve accuracy in practice, this paper proposes a novel data-driven modeling with experimental augmentation (D2EA), leveraging both simulation data and experimental data. In D2EA, simulation data aims to establish basic functional landscape, and experimental data focuses on matching actual performance in real world. The D2EA approach is instantiated for the efficiency optimization of a hybrid modulation for neutral-point-clamped dual-active-bridge (NPC-DAB) converter. The proposed D2EA approach realizes 99.92% efficiency modeling accuracy, and its feasibility is comprehensively validated in 2-kW hardware experiments, where the peak efficiency of 98.45% is attained. Overall, D2EA is data-light and can achieve highly accurate and highly practical data-driven models in one shot, and it is scalable to other applications, effortlessly.

Particle swarm optimization with state-based adaptive velocity limit strategy

Velocity limit (VL) has been widely adopted in many variants of particle swarm optimization (PSO) to prevent particles from searching outside the solution space. Several adaptive VL strategies have been introduced with which the performance of PSO can be improved. However, the existing adaptive VL strategies simply adjust their VL based on iterations, leading to unsatisfactory optimization results because of the incompatibility between VL and the current searching state of particles. To deal with this problem, a novel PSO variant with state-based adaptive velocity limit strategy (PSO-SAVL) is proposed. In the proposed PSO-SAVL, VL is adaptively adjusted based on the evolutionary state estimation (ESE) in which a high value of VL is set for global searching state and a low value of VL is set for local searching state. Besides that, limit handling strategies have been modified and adopted to improve the capability of avoiding local optima. The good performance of PSO-SAVL has been experimentally validated on a wide range of benchmark functions with 50 dimensions. The satisfactory scalability of PSO-SAVL in high-dimension and large-scale problems is also verified. Besides, the merits of the strategies in PSO-SAVL are verified in experiments. Sensitivity analysis for the relevant hyper-parameters in state-based adaptive VL strategy is conducted, and insights in how to select these hyper-parameters are also discussed.

Feature-aware conditional GAN for category text generation

Category text generation receives considerable attentions since it is beneficial for various natural language processing tasks. Recently, the generative adversarial network (GAN) has attained promising performance in text generation, attributed to its adversarial training process. However, there are several issues in text GANs, including discreteness, training instability, mode collapse, lack of diversity and controllability etc. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel GAN framework, the feature-aware conditional GAN (FA-GAN), for controllable category text generation. In FA-GAN, the generator has a sequence-to-sequence structure for improving sentence diversity, which consists of three encoders including a special feature-aware encoder and a category-aware encoder, and one relational-memory-core-based decoder with the Gumbel SoftMax activation function. The discriminator has an additional category classification head. To generate sentences with specified categories, the multi-class classification loss is supplemented in the adversarial training. Comprehensive experiments have been conducted, and the results show that FA-GAN consistently outperforms 10 state-of-the-art text generation approaches on 6 text classification datasets. The case study demonstrates that the synthetic sentences generated by FA-GAN can match the required categories and are aware of the features of conditioned sentences, with good readability, fluency, and text authenticity.

Artificial-Intelligence-Based Triple Phase Shift Modulation for Dual Active Bridge Converter with Minimized Current Stress

The dual active bridge (DAB) converter has been popular in many applications for its outstanding power density and bidirectional power transfer capacity. Up to now, triple phase shift (TPS) can be considered as one of the most advanced modulation techniques for DAB converter. It can widen zero voltage switching range and improve power efficiency significantly. Currently, current stress of the DAB converter has been an important performance indicator when TPS modulation is applied for smaller size and higher efficiency. However, to minimize the current stress when the DAB converter is under TPS modulation, two difficulties exist in analysis process and realization process, respectively. Firstly, three degrees of modulation variables in TPS modulation bring challenges to the analysis of current stress in different operating modes. This analysis and deduction process leads to heavy computational burden and also suffers from low accuracy. Secondly, to realize TPS modulation, if a lookup table is adopted after the optimization of modulation variables, modulation performance will be unsatisfactory because of the discrete nature of lookup table. Therefore, an AI-based TPS modulation (AI-TPSM) strategy is proposed in this paper. Neural network (NN) and fuzzy inference system (FIS) are utilized to deal with the two difficulties mentioned above. With the proposed AI-TPSM, the optimization of TPS modulation for minimized current stress will enjoy high degree of automation which can relieve engineers' working burden and improve accuracy. In the end of this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed AI-TPSM has been experimentally verified with a 1 kW prototype.

Artificial-Intelligence-Based Hybrid Extended Phase Shift Modulation for the Dual Active Bridge Converter with Full ZVS Range and Optimal Efficiency

Dual active bridge (DAB) converter is the key enabler in many popular applications such as wireless charging, electric vehicle and renewable energy. ZVS range and efficiency are two significant performance indicators for DAB converter. To obtain the desired ZVS and efficiency performance, modulation should be carefully designed. Hybrid modulation considers several single modulation strategies to achieve good comprehensive performance. Conventionally, to design a hybrid modulation, harmonic approach or piecewise approach is used, but they suffer from time-consuming model building process and inaccuracy. Therefore, an artificial-intelligence-based hybrid extended phase shift (HEPS) modulation is proposed. Generally, the HEPS modulation is developed in an automated fashion, which alleviates cumbersome model building process while keeping high model accuracy. In HEPS modulation, two EPS strategies are considered to realize optimal efficiency with full ZVS operation over entire operating ranges. Specifically, to build data-driven models of ZVS and efficiency performance, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), which is a state-of-the-art ensemble learning algorithm, is adopted. Afterwards, particle swarm optimization with state-based adaptive velocity limit (PSO-SAVL) is utilized to select the best EPS strategy and optimize modulation parameters. With 1 kW hardware experiments, the feasibility of HEPS has been verified, achieving optimal efficiency with maximum of 97.1% and full-range ZVS operation.

On the equidistribution of closed geodesics and geodesic nets

We show that given a closed $n$-manifold $M$, for a generic set of Riemannian metrics $g$ on $M$ there exists a sequence of closed geodesics that are equidistributed in $M$ if $n=2$; and an equidistributed sequence of embedded stationary geodesic nets if $n=3$. One of the main tools that we use is the Weyl Law for the volume spectrum for $1$-cycles, proved by Liokumovich, Marques and Neves for $n=2$ and more recently by Guth and Liokumovich for $n=3$. We show that our proof of the equidistribution of geodesic nets can be generalized for any dimension $n\geq 2$ provided the Weyl Law for $1$-cycles in $n$-manifolds holds.

Structure-Aware Language Model Pretraining Improves Dense Retrieval on Structured Data

This paper presents Structure Aware Dense Retrieval (SANTA) model, which encodes user queries and structured data in one universal embedding space for retrieving structured data. SANTA proposes two pretraining methods to make language models structure-aware and learn effective representations for structured data: 1) Structured Data Alignment, which utilizes the natural alignment relations between structured data and unstructured data for structure-aware pretraining. It contrastively trains language models to represent multi-modal text data and teaches models to distinguish matched structured data for unstructured texts. 2) Masked Entity Prediction, which designs an entity-oriented mask strategy and asks language models to fill in the masked entities. Our experiments show that SANTA achieves state-of-the-art on code search and product search and conducts convincing results in the zero-shot setting. SANTA learns tailored representations for multi-modal text data by aligning structured and unstructured data pairs and capturing structural semantics by masking and predicting entities in the structured data. Take a Break in the Middle: Investigating Subgoals towards Hierarchical Script Generation

Goal-oriented Script Generation is a new task of generating a list of steps that can fulfill the given goal. In this paper, we propose to extend the task from the perspective of cognitive theory. Instead of a simple flat structure, the steps are typically organized hierarchically - Human often decompose a complex task into subgoals, where each subgoal can be further decomposed into steps. To establish the benchmark, we contribute a new dataset, propose several baseline methods, and set up evaluation metrics. Both automatic and human evaluation verify the high-quality of dataset, as well as the effectiveness of incorporating subgoals into hierarchical script generation. Furthermore, We also design and evaluate the model to discover subgoal, and find that it is a bit more difficult to decompose the goals than summarizing from segmented steps.
