STAIR: Semantic-Temporal Automaton for Interpretable Reasoning in Temporal Question Answering

By leveraging large-scale pretraining, LLMs can interpret diverse temporal expressions and question formulations without task-specific training. However, existing prompt-based neuro-symbolic systems continue to rely on LLMs for both semantic interpretation and exact temporal inference. Consequently, discrete decisions regarding intervals, time anchors, and ordered states remain vulnerable to probabilistic errors and difficult to verify. We present STAIR, a \textbf{S}emantic-\textbf{T}emporal \textbf{A}utomaton for \textbf{I}nterpretable \textbf{R}easoning. STAIR separates semantic interpretation from precise temporal inference: an answer-free LLM adapter maps complex question formulations to normalized temporal intents, while a deterministic temporal automaton with finite control and guarded transitions executes the corresponding policies over canonicalized evidence. Following a rule-first design, STAIR resolves standard questions without invoking an LLM and applies semantic adaptation only when the rule path fails to produce an executable intent. This approach reduces free-form reasoning, making temporal decisions verifiable and interpretable. Specifically, guarded execution supports precise point-time containment and before/after selection, while semantic adaptation handles non-exact intervals and time-anchored queries. Across the TimeQA-Easy, TimeQA-Hard, TempReason-L2, and TempReason-L3 datasets, STAIR consistently outperforms strong baselines in the TQA task using matched model settings, achieving average F1 improvements of 16.57\% and 3.10\% when utilizing the Qwen2.5-7B and GPT-4o-mini models, respectively. Furthermore, ablations and diagnostic analyses demonstrate that STAIR excels at handling both boundary-sensitive and order-sensitive queries, while its guarded execution and semantic adaptation ensure precise point-time reasoning and inexact intervals, respectively.

Ferromagnetism in LaFeO3/LaNiO3 Superlattices with High Curie Temperature

Interfacing complex oxides in atomically engineered layered structures can give rise to a wealth of exceptional electronic and magnetic properties that surpass those of the individual building blocks. Herein, we demonstrate a ferromagnetic spin order with a high Curie temperature of 608 K in superlattices consisting of otherwise paramagnetic perovskite LaNiO3 (LNO) and antiferromagnetic LaFeO3 (LFO). The extraordinary ferromagnetism likely results from the covalent exchange due to interfacial charge transfer from Fe to Ni cations. By deliberately controlling the thickness of the LNO sublayers thus the amount of charge transfer, a robust ferromagnetism of 4 uB is realized for a stacking periodicity consisting of one single unit cell of both LNO and LFO, an emergent double perovskite phase of La2FeNiO6 with B-site layered ordering configurations. The ferromagnetic LFO/LNO superlattices offer great potential for the search of emergent magnetodielectric and/or multiferroic properties as well as applications in spintronics and electrocatalysts.

Formation of random singlets in the nanocrystalline quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)2O41

Induced by quenched disorder, random-singlet states occur in a variety of low-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnets, some of them candidates for quantum spin liquids. Here we report measurements of the specific heat, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility of nanocrystalline Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)2O41, a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet with alternating bonds. The results uncover the predominant presence of random-singlet spin pairs in this material, with a logarithmic probability distribution, P(J), of the renormalized, emergent exchange interaction, J, in zero magnetic field and P(J) proportional to 1/J in magnetic fields. We postulate that these unexpected J dependences, in contrast to the usual P(J) \propto 1/$J^γ$ with 0 < $γ$ < 1, and possibly also the dichotomy, arise from the finite size of the nanocrystals. Scaling functions for the specific heat and magnetization reproduce our magnetocaloric-effect data, with no adjustable parameters.

Fermi surfaces of the topological semimetal CaSn$_{3}$ probed through de Haas van Alphen oscillations

In the search of topological superconductors, nailing down the Fermiology of the normal state is as crucial a prerequisite as unraveling the superconducting pairing symmetry. In particular, the number of time-reversal-invariant momenta in the Brillouin zone enclosed by Fermi surfaces is closely linked to the topological class of time-reversal-invariant systems, and can experimentally be investigated. We report here a detailed study of de Haas van Alphen quantum oscillations in single crystals of the topological semimetal CaSn$_{3}$ with torque magnetometry in high magnetic fields up to 35 T. In conjunction with density functional theory based calculations, the observed quantum oscillations frequencies indicate that the Fermi surfaces of CaSn$_{3}$ enclose an odd number of time-reversal-invariant momenta, satisfying one of the proposed criteria to realize topological superconductivity. Nonzero Berry phases extracted from the magnetic oscillations also support the nontrivial topological nature of CaSn$_{3}$.

Unusual upper critical fields of the topological nodal-line semimetal candidate Sn$_{x}$NbSe$_{2-δ}$

We report superconductivity in Sn$_{x}$NbSe$_{2-δ}$, a topological nodal-line semimetal candidate with a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of this compound is extremely sensitive to Sn concentration $x$ and Se deficiency $δ$, 5.0 K for Sn$_{0.13}$NbSe$_{1.70}$ and 8.6 K for Sn$_{0.14}$NbSe$_{1.71}$ and Sn$_{0.15}$NbSe$_{1.69}$. In all samples, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ differs from the prediction of the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg theory. While the zero-temperature value of the in-plane upper critical field of Sn$_{x}$NbSe$_{2-δ}$ with the higher $T_{c}$ is lower than the Pauli paramagnetic limit $H_{P}$, that of the lower $T_{c}$ sample exceeds $H_{P}$ by a factor of $\sim$2. Our observations suggest that odd-parity contribution dominates the superconducting gap function of Sn$_{x}$NbSe$_{2-δ}$, and it can be fine-tuned by the Sn concentration and Se deficiency.

Finite field regime for a quantum spin liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

An external magnetic field can induce a transition in $α$-RuCl$_3$ from an ordered zigzag state to a disordered state that is possibly related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Here we present new field dependent inelastic neutron scattering and magnetocaloric effect measurements implying the existence of an additional transition out of the quantum spin liquid phase at an upper field limit $B_u$. The neutron scattering shows three distinct regimes of magnetic response. In the low field ordered state the response shows magnon peaks; the intermediate field regime shows only continuum scattering, and above $B_u$ the response shows sharp magnon peaks at the lower bound of a strong continuum. Measurable dispersion of magnon modes along the $(0,0,L)$ direction implies non-negligible inter-plane interactions. Combining the magnetocaloric effect measurements with other data a $T-B$ phase diagram is constructed. The results constrain the range where one might expect to observe quantum spin liquid behavior in $α$-RuCl$_3$.
