Frequency Shift Physics-Informed Extreme Learning Machine for Solving High-Frequency Partial Differential Equations

Solving partial differential equations (PDEs) with high-frequency solutions remains a central challenge in physics-informed machine learning due to spectral bias -- the tendency of neural networks to learn low-frequency components preferentially. This paper proposes a Frequency Shift Physics-Informed Extreme Learning Machine (FS-PIELM) framework that addresses this limitation through an additive mechanism for weight initialization. Rather than multiplying random weights by a scaling factor, the method translates the mean of the Gaussian weight distribution while keeping the variance fixed at unity, thereby avoiding the variance amplification inherent in scaling-based methods. Two variants are developed: FS-PIELM-L assigns independent frequency magnitudes to individual neurons, while FS-PIELM-G groups neurons for improved robustness. Theoretical analysis shows that the frequency variance under the proposed framework remains bounded and approaches unity regardless of target frequency, in contrast to the quadratic growth of conventional approaches. The method preserves the computational efficiency of extreme learning machines, requiring only a single linear solve. Experiments on seven benchmark problems spanning six equation types -- Helmholtz, wave, Poisson, Klein-Gordon, heat, and advection-diffusion -- on both regular and complex geometries show that the linear variant achieves the best accuracy in six of seven cases, with improvements of one to nearly five orders of magnitude over existing PIELM variants. The code and data accompanying this manuscript will be made publicly available at https://github.com/xgxgnpu/Physics-informed-vibe-coding/tree/main/FS-PIELM.

Enhanced-FQL($λ$), an Efficient and Interpretable RL with novel Fuzzy Eligibility Traces and Segmented Experience Replay

This paper introduces a fuzzy reinforcement learning framework, Enhanced-FQL($λ$), that integrates novel Fuzzified Eligibility Traces (FET) and Segmented Experience Replay (SER) into fuzzy Q-learning with the Fuzzified Bellman Equation (FBE) for continuous control. The proposed approach employs an interpretable fuzzy rule base instead of complex neural architectures, while maintaining competitive performance through two key innovations: a fuzzified Bellman equation with eligibility traces for stable multi-step credit assignment, and a memory-efficient segment-based experience replay mechanism for enhanced sample efficiency. Theoretical analysis proves the proposed method convergence under standard assumptions. On the Cart--Pole benchmark, Enhanced-FQL($λ$) improves sample efficiency and reduces variance relative to $n$-step fuzzy TD and fuzzy SARSA($λ$), while remaining competitive with the tested DDPG baseline. These results support the proposed framework as an interpretable and computationally compact alternative for moderate-scale continuous control problems.

Physics-Informed Neural Networks and Neural Operators for Parametric PDEs

PDEs arise ubiquitously in science and engineering, where solutions depend on parameters (physical properties, boundary conditions, geometry). Traditional numerical methods require re-solving the PDE for each parameter, making parameter space exploration prohibitively expensive. Recent machine learning advances, particularly physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) and neural operators, have revolutionized parametric PDE solving by learning solution operators that generalize across parameter spaces. We critically analyze two main paradigms: (1) PINNs, which embed physical laws as soft constraints and excel at inverse problems with sparse data, and (2) neural operators (e.g., DeepONet, Fourier Neural Operator), which learn mappings between infinite-dimensional function spaces and achieve unprecedented generalization. Through comparisons across fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, heat transfer, and electromagnetics, we show neural operators can achieve computational speedups of $10^3$ to $10^5$ times faster than traditional solvers for multi-query scenarios, while maintaining comparable accuracy. We provide practical guidance for method selection, discuss theoretical foundations (universal approximation, convergence), and identify critical open challenges: high-dimensional parameters, complex geometries, and out-of-distribution generalization. This work establishes a unified framework for understanding parametric PDE solvers via operator learning, offering a comprehensive, incrementally updated resource for this rapidly evolving field

Bridging the genotype-phenotype gap with generative artificial intelligence

The genotype-phenotype gap is a persistent barrier to complex trait genetic dissection, worsened by the explosive growth of genomic data (1.5 billion variants identified in the UK Biobank WGS study) alongside persistently scarce and subjective human-defined phenotypes. Digital phenotyping offers a potential solution, yet existing tools fail to balance scalable non-manual phenotype generation and biological interpretability of these quantitative traits. Here we report AIPheno, the first generative AI-driven "phenotype sequencer" that bridges this gap. It enables high-throughput, unsupervised extraction of digital phenotypes from imaging data and unlocks their biological meaning via generative network analysis. AIPheno transforms imaging modalities into a rich source of quantitative traits, dramatically enhancing cross-species genetic discovery, including novel loci such as CCBE1 (humans), KITLG-TMTC3 (domestic pigeons), and SOD2-IGF2R (swine). Critically, its generative module decodes AI-derived phenotypes by synthesizing variant-specific images to yield actionable biological insights. For example, it clarifies how the OCA2-HERC2 locus pleiotropically links pigmentation to retinal vascular traits via vascular visibility modulation. Integrating scalable non-manual phenotyping, enhanced genetic discovery power, and generative mechanistic decoding, AIPheno establishes a transformative closed-loop paradigm. This work addresses the longstanding genotype-phenotype imbalance, redefines digital phenotype utility, and accelerates translation of genetic associations into actionable understanding with profound implications for human health and agriculture.

Separated-Variable Spectral Neural Networks: A Physics-Informed Learning Approach for High-Frequency PDEs

Solving high-frequency oscillatory partial differential equations (PDEs) is a critical challenge in scientific computing, with applications in fluid mechanics, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetic wave propagation. Traditional physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) suffer from spectral bias, limiting their ability to capture high-frequency solution components. We introduce Separated-Variable Spectral Neural Networks (SV-SNN), a novel framework that addresses these limitations by integrating separation of variables with adaptive spectral methods. Our approach features three key innovations: (1) decomposition of multivariate functions into univariate function products, enabling independent spatial and temporal networks; (2) adaptive Fourier spectral features with learnable frequency parameters for high-frequency capture; and (3) theoretical framework based on singular value decomposition to quantify spectral bias. Comprehensive evaluation on benchmark problems including Heat equation, Helmholtz equation, Poisson equations and Navier-Stokes equations demonstrates that SV-SNN achieves 1-3 orders of magnitude improvement in accuracy while reducing parameter count by over 90\% and training time by 60\%. These results establish SV-SNN as an effective solution to the spectral bias problem in neural PDE solving. The implementation will be made publicly available upon acceptance at https://github.com/xgxgnpu/SV-SNN.

The optical generation and continuous transformation of plasmonic skyrmions

Topological quasiparticles, including skyrmions and merons, are topological textures with sophisticated vectorial structures that can be used for high-density information storage, precision metrology, position sensing, etc. Here, we realized the optical generation and continuous transformation of plasmonic field skyrmions. We generated the isolated Néel-type skyrmion using surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited by a focused structured light on a silver film. We used a square and a hexagonal aperture for symmetry constraints and successfully generated the meron lattice and the skyrmion lattice. We unveiled the mechanism of topological texture generation and transformation and optimized the distribution of skyrmion and meron topologies. We further demonstrated the continuous transformation among the isolated skyrmion, the meron lattice, and the skyrmion lattice using well-designed circular-fourfold, circular-sixfold, and fourfold-sixfold symmetry apertures, respectively. This work can open up a pathway for the generation and transformation of skyrmion and meron topologies, which is expected to facilitate new applications in optical information storage and encoding.

Enhancing Motor Imagery Decoding in Brain Computer Interfaces using Riemann Tangent Space Mapping and Cross Frequency Coupling

Objective: Motor Imagery (MI) serves as a crucial experimental paradigm within the realm of Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs), aiming to decoding motor intentions from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Method: Drawing inspiration from Riemannian geometry and Cross-Frequency Coupling (CFC), this paper introduces a novel approach termed Riemann Tangent Space Mapping using Dichotomous Filter Bank with Convolutional Neural Network (DFBRTS) to enhance the representation quality and decoding capability pertaining to MI features. DFBRTS first initiates the process by meticulously filtering EEG signals through a Dichotomous Filter Bank, structured in the fashion of a complete binary tree. Subsequently, it employs Riemann Tangent Space Mapping to extract salient EEG signal features within each sub-band. Finally, a lightweight convolutional neural network is employed for further feature extraction and classification, operating under the joint supervision of cross-entropy and center loss. To validate the efficacy, extensive experiments were conducted using DFBRTS on two well-established benchmark datasets: the BCI competition IV 2a (BCIC-IV-2a) dataset and the OpenBMI dataset. The performance of DFBRTS was benchmarked against several state-of-the-art MI decoding methods, alongside other Riemannian geometry-based MI decoding approaches. Results: DFBRTS significantly outperforms other MI decoding algorithms on both datasets, achieving a remarkable classification accuracy of 78.16% for four-class and 71.58% for two-class hold-out classification, as compared to the existing benchmarks.

Popularity, face and voice: Predicting and interpreting livestreamers' retail performance using machine learning techniques

Livestreaming commerce, a hybrid of e-commerce and self-media, has expanded the broad spectrum of traditional sales performance determinants. To investigate the factors that contribute to the success of livestreaming commerce, we construct a longitudinal firm-level database with 19,175 observations, covering an entire livestreaming subsector. By comparing the forecasting accuracy of eight machine learning models, we identify a random forest model that provides the best prediction of gross merchandise volume (GMV). Furthermore, we utilize explainable artificial intelligence to open the black-box of machine learning model, discovering four new facts: 1) variables representing the popularity of livestreaming events are crucial features in predicting GMV. And voice attributes are more important than appearance; 2) popularity is a major determinant of sales for female hosts, while vocal aesthetics is more decisive for their male counterparts; 3) merits and drawbacks of the voice are not equally valued in the livestreaming market; 4) based on changes of comments, page views and likes, sales growth can be divided into three stages. Finally, we innovatively propose a 3D-SHAP diagram that demonstrates the relationship between predicting feature importance, target variable, and its predictors. This diagram identifies bottlenecks for both beginner and top livestreamers, providing insights into ways to optimize their sales performance.

Improved Motor Imagery Classification Using Adaptive Spatial Filters Based on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

As a typical self-paced brain-computer interface (BCI) system, the motor imagery (MI) BCI has been widely applied in fields such as robot control, stroke rehabilitation, and assistance for patients with stroke or spinal cord injury. Many studies have focused on the traditional spatial filters obtained through the common spatial pattern (CSP) method. However, the CSP method can only obtain fixed spatial filters for specific input signals. Besides, CSP method only focuses on the variance difference of two types of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, so the decoding ability of EEG signals is limited. To obtain more effective spatial filters for better extraction of spatial features that can improve classification to MI-EEG, this paper proposes an adaptive spatial filter solving method based on particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). A training and testing framework based on filter bank and spatial filters (FBCSP-ASP) is designed for MI EEG signal classification. Comparative experiments are conducted on two public datasets (2a and 2b) from BCI competition IV, which show the outstanding average recognition accuracy of FBCSP-ASP. The proposed method has achieved significant performance improvement on MI-BCI. The classification accuracy of the proposed method has reached 74.61% and 81.19% on datasets 2a and 2b, respectively. Compared with the baseline algorithm (FBCSP), the proposed algorithm improves 11.44% and 7.11% on two datasets respectively. Furthermore, the analysis based on mutual information, t-SNE and Shapley values further proves that ASP features have excellent decoding ability for MI-EEG signals, and explains the improvement of classification performance by the introduction of ASP features.

Dynamic Beam-Based Random Access Scheme for M2M Communications in Massive MIMO Systems

Internet of things, supported by machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, is one of the most important applications for future 6th generation (6G) systems. A major challenge facing by 6G is enabling a massive number of M2M devices to access networks in a timely manner. Therefore, this paper exploits the spatial selectivity of massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) to reduce the collision issue when massive M2M devices initiate random access simultaneously. In particular, a beam-based random access protocol is first proposed to make efficient use of the limited uplink resources for massive M2M devices. To address the non-uniform distribution of M2M devices in the space and time dimensions, an Markov decision process (MDP) problem with the objective of minimizing the average access delay is then formulated. Next, we present a dynamic beam-based access scheme based on the double deep Q network (DDQN) algorithm to solve the optimal policy. Finally, simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme including the model training and random access performance.

New volatility evolution model after extreme events

In this paper, we propose a new dynamical model to study the two-stage volatility evolution of stock market index after extreme events, and find that the volatility after extreme events follows a stretched exponential decay in the initial stage and becomes a power law decay at later times by using high frequency minute data. Empirical study of the evolutionary behaviors of volatility after endogenous and exogenous events further demonstrates the descriptive power of our new model. To further explore the underlying mechanisms of volatility evolution, we introduce the sequential arrival of information hypothesis (SAIH) and the mixture of distribution hypothesis (MDH) to test the two-stage assumption, and find that investors transform from the uninformed state to the informed state in the first stage and informed investors subsequently dominate in the second stage. The testing results offer a supporting explanation for the validity of our new model and the fitted values of relevant parameters.

The impact of economic policy uncertainties on the volatility of European carbon market

The European Union Emission Trading Scheme is a carbon emission allowance trading system designed by Europe to achieve emission reduction targets. The amount of carbon emission caused by production activities is closely related to the socio-economic environment. Therefore, from the perspective of economic policy uncertainty, this article constructs the GARCH-MIDAS-EUEPU and GARCH-MIDAS-GEPU models for investigating the impact of European and global economic policy uncertainty on carbon price fluctuations. The results show that both European and global economic policy uncertainty will exacerbate the long-term volatility of European carbon spot return, with the latter having a stronger impact when the change is the same. Moreover, the volatility of the European carbon spot return can be forecasted better by the predictor, global economic policy uncertainty. This research can provide some implications for market managers in grasping carbon market trends and helping participants control the risk of fluctuations in carbon allowances.

Preventing crash in stock market: The role of economic policy uncertainty during COVID-19

This paper investigates the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on the crash risk of US stock market during the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we use the GARCH-S (GARCH with skewness) model to estimate daily skewness as a proxy for the stock market crash risk. The empirical results show the significantly negative correlation between EPU and stock market crash risk, indicating the aggravation of EPU increase the crash risk. Moreover, the negative correlation gets stronger after the global COVID-19 outbreak, which shows the crash risk of the US stock market will be more affected by EPU during the pandemic.

Capped norm linear discriminant analysis and its applications

Classical linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is based on squared Frobenious norm and hence is sensitive to outliers and noise. To improve the robustness of LDA, in this paper, we introduce capped l_{2,1}-norm of a matrix, which employs non-squared l_2-norm and "capped" operation, and further propose a novel capped l_{2,1}-norm linear discriminant analysis, called CLDA. Due to the use of capped l_{2,1}-norm, CLDA can effectively remove extreme outliers and suppress the effect of noise data. In fact, CLDA can be also viewed as a weighted LDA. CLDA is solved through a series of generalized eigenvalue problems with theoretical convergency. The experimental results on an artificial data set, some UCI data sets and two image data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of CLDA.

Visibility graph analysis of economy policy uncertainty indices

Uncertainty plays an important role in the global economy. In this paper, the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) indices of the United States and China are selected as the proxy variable corresponding to the uncertainty of national economic policy. By adopting the visibility graph algorithm, the four economic policy uncertainty indices of the United States and China are mapped into complex networks, and the topological properties of the corresponding networks are studied. The Hurst exponents of all the four indices are within $\left[0.5,1\right]$, which implies that the economic policy uncertainty is persistent. The degree distributions of the EPU networks have power-law tails and are thus scale-free. The average clustering coefficients of the four EPU networks are high and close to each other, while these networks exhibit weak assortative mixing. We also find that the EPU network in United States based on daily data shows the small-world feature since the average shortest path length increases logarithmically with the network size such that $L\left(N\right)=0.626\ln N+0.405$. Our research highlights the possibility to study the EPU from the view angle of complex networks.

The role of global economic policy uncertainty in predicting crude oil futures volatility: Evidence from a two-factor GARCH-MIDAS model

This paper aims to examine whether the global economic policy uncertainty (GEPU) and uncertainty changes have different impacts on crude oil futures volatility. We establish single-factor and two-factor models under the GARCH-MIDAS framework to investigate the predictive power of GEPU and GEPU changes excluding and including realized volatility. The findings show that the models with rolling-window specification perform better than those with fixed-span specification. For single-factor models, the GEPU index and its changes, as well as realized volatility, are consistent effective factors in predicting the volatility of crude oil futures. Specially, GEPU changes have stronger predictive power than the GEPU index. For two-factor models, GEPU is not an effective forecast factor for the volatility of WTI crude oil futures or Brent crude oil futures. The two-factor model with GEPU changes contains more information and exhibits stronger forecasting ability for crude oil futures market volatility than the single-factor models. The GEPU changes are indeed the main source of long-term volatility of the crude oil futures.

Performance Modeling and Analysis of a Hyperledger-based System Using GSPN

As a highly scalable permissioned blockchain platform, Hyperledger Fabric supports a wide range of industry use cases ranging from governance to finance. In this paper, we propose a model to analyze the performance of a Hyperledgerbased system by using Generalised Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN). This model decomposes a transaction flow into multiple phases and provides a simulation-based approach to obtain the system latency and throughput with a specific arrival rate. Based on this model, we analyze the impact of different configurations of ordering service on system performance to find out the bottleneck. Moreover, a mathematical configuration selection approach is proposed to determine the best configuration which can maximize the system throughput. Finally, extensive experiments are performed on a running system to validate the proposed model and approaches.

A global economic policy uncertainty index from principal component analysis

This paper constructs a global economic policy uncertainty index through the principal component analysis of the economic policy uncertainty indices for twenty primary economies around the world. We find that the PCA-based global economic policy uncertainty index is a good proxy for the economic policy uncertainty on a global scale, which is quite consistent with the GDP-weighted global economic policy uncertainty index. The PCA-based economic policy uncertainty index is found to be positively related with the volatility and correlation of the global financial market, which indicates that the stocks are more volatile and correlated when the global economic policy uncertainty is higher. The PCA-based global economic policy uncertainty index performs slightly better because the relationship between the PCA-based uncertainty and market volatility and correlation is more significant.
