OctCGS: Octree-Contextual Gaussian Splatting with Explicit Multi-Order Propagation Modeling for Channel Knowledge Map Construction

Channel knowledge maps (CKMs) learn the relation between transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) positions and channel knowledge to support environment-aware wireless communications. Implicit neural methods can model continuous channel variation but often incur high training and inference cost, while existing Gaussian-splatting-based CKM methods improve efficiency yet still compress wireless multipath interactions into aggregated scattering representations. Consequently, explicit modeling of multi-bounce wireless propagation remains absent from CKM construction. We propose OctCGS, an octree-contextual Gaussian splatting framework that explicitly models the order of bounce jointly over Tx/Rx positions and carrier frequencies. OctCGS partitions the environment into a multi-resolution octree and anchors one Gaussian primitive to each leaf node. Rather than having each Gaussian independently encode all multi-path propagations, it models complex electromagnetic interactions among scatterers through tree attention over the octree hierarchy with controlled complexity. Experiments on simulated benchmarks show that OctCGS achieves a 2.99 dB channel-gain mean absolute error (MAE) and 0.065 channel gain normalized mean absolute error (NMAE), outperforming the strongest baseline by 0.88 dB MAE and 0.021 NMAE.

Planar Gaussian Splatting with Bilinear Spatial Transformer for Wireless Radiance Field Reconstruction

Wireless radiance field (WRF) reconstruction aims to learn a continuous, queryable representation of radio frequency characteristics over 3D space and direction, from which specific quantities, such as the spatial power spectrum (SPS) at a receiver given a transmitter position, can be predicted. While Gaussian splatting (GS)-based method has surpassed Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF)-based method for this task, existing adaptations largely transplant vision pipelines, limiting physical interpretability and accuracy. We introduce BiSplat-WRF, a planar GS framework that retains the expressiveness of 3D GS while removing unnecessary projections and incorporating global EM coupling and mutual scattering among primitives. Each primitive is a 2D planar Gaussian with 3D coordinates, rendered directly on the angular domain of the SPS. A bilinear spatial transformer (BST) aggregates inter-primitive relations on an angular grid and, via attention, captures long-range electromagnetic dependencies, thereby enforcing globally aware EM interactions that reflect the complex physics of the wireless environment. On spatial spectrum synthesis task, BiSplat-WRF surpasses NeRF-based and prior GS-based baselines with respect to the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM); comprehensive ablation studies validate the contribution of BST. We also provide a larger BiSplat-WRF+ variant that further increases SSIM at a higher computation cost, serving as a strong reference for future studies.

Towards Integrated Sensing and Communications for 6G

For the next generation of mobile communications systems, the integration of sensing and communications promises benefits in terms of spectrum utilization, cost, latency, area and weight. In this paper, we categorize and summarize the key features and technical considerations for different integration approaches and discuss related waveform design issues for a future 6G system. We provide results on new candidate waveforms for monostatic sensing and finally highlight important open issues and directions that deserve future in-depth research.

Modeling the Evolution of Line-of-Sight Blockage for V2V Channels

We investigate the evolution of line of sight (LOS) blockage over both time and space for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channels. Using realistic vehicular mobility and building and foliage locations from maps, we first perform LOS blockage analysis to extract LOS probabilities in real cities and on highways for varying vehicular densities. Next, to model the time evolution of LOS blockage for V2V links, we employ a three-state discrete-time Markov chain comprised of the following states: i) LOS; ii) non-LOS due to static objects (e.g., buildings, trees, etc.); and iii) non-LOS due to mobile objects (vehicles). We obtain state transition probabilities based on the evolution of LOS blockage. Finally, we perform curve fitting and obtain a set of distance-dependent equations for both LOS and transition probabilities. These equations can be used to generate time-evolved V2V channel realizations for representative urban and highway environments. Our results can be used to perform highly efficient and accurate simulations without the need to employ complex geometry-based models for link evolution.

Pulse Shaped OFDM for 5G Systems

OFDM-based waveforms with filtering or windowing functionalities are considered key enablers for a flexible air-interface design for multi-service support in future 5G systems. One candidate from this category of waveforms is pulse shaped OFDM, which follows the idea of subcarrier filtering and aims at fully maintaining the advantages of standard OFDM systems while addressing their drawbacks. In this paper, we elaborate on several pulse shaping design methods, and show how pulse shapes can be exploited as an additional degree of freedom to provide better frequency localization and more efficient spectrum utilization under a pre-defined spectrum mask. The performance analysis and evaluation results show that, for a practical mobile communication systems, the application of pulse shaping is a simple and effective means to achieve a lower out-of-band leakage for OFDM systems at virtually no costs. In fact, the complexity increase amounts to 1-2% compared to CP-OFDM only. In addition, the system's robustness against both time and frequency distortions is shown to be substantially improved by a proper pulse shape design. By allowing for the flexible configuration of physical layer parameters per sub-band according to the diverse requirements of future 5G services, pulse shaped OFDM systems can efficiently facilitate asynchronous transmissions and fragmented spectrum access, rendering it beneficial for various mobile-broadband and Internet-of-Things applications.

Dual-Polarized Ricean MIMO Channels: Modeling and Performance Assessment

In wireless communication systems, dual-polarized (DP) instead of single-polarized (SP) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is used to improve the spectral efficiency under certain conditions on the channel and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In order to identify these conditions, we first propose a novel channel model for DP mobile Ricean MIMO channels for which statistical channel parameters are readily obtained from a moment-based channel decomposition. Second, we derive an approximation of the mutual information (MI), which can be expressed as a function of those statistical channel parameters. Based on this approximation, we characterize the required SNR for a DP MIMO system to outperform an SP MIMO system in terms of the MI. Finally, we apply our results to channel measurements at 2.53 GHz. We find that, using the proposed channel decomposition and the approximation of the MI, we are able to reproduce the (practically relevant) SNR values above which DP MIMO systems outperform SP MIMO systems.
