The discontinuous limit case of an archetypal oscillator with constant excitation and van der Pol damping: A single equilibrium

This paper investigates the global dynamics of the discontinuous limit case of an archetypal oscillator with constant excitation that exhibits a single equilibrium. For parameter regions in which this oscillator possesses two or three equilibria, the global bifurcation diagram and the corresponding phase portraits on the Poincare disc have been presented in [Phys. D, 438 (2022) 133362]. The present work completes the global structure of the discontinuous limit case of an archetypal oscillator with constant excitation. Although the dynamical phenomena are less rich compared to systems with more than one equilibrium, the presence of a single equilibrium gives rise to additional limit cycles surrounding it, thereby enriching the overall dynamics and making the analysis substantially more intricate than in the previously studied cases.

New sufficient condition for the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture through the Newton diagram

The present paper is devoted to investigating the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture. This conjecture claims that if $F=\left(f,g\right):\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^2$ is a polynomial map with $\det DF\left(x,y\right)\ne0$ for all $\left(x,y\right)\in\mathbb{R}^2$, then $F$ is globally injective. With the help of the Newton diagram, we provide a new sufficient condition such that the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture holds. Moreover, this sufficient condition generalizes the main result of [J. Differential Equations {\bf 260} (2016), 5250-5258]. Furthermore, two new classes of polynomial maps satisfying the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture are given.

New lower bound for the number of critical periods for planar polynomial systems

In this paper, we construct two classes of planar polynomial Hamiltonian systems having a center at the origin, and obtain the lower bounds for the number of critical periods for these systems. For polynomial potential systems of degree $n$, we provide a lower bound of $n-2$ for the number of critical periods, and for polynomial systems of degree $n$, we acquire a lower bound of $n^2/2+n-5/2$ when $n$ is odd and $n^2/2-2$ when $n$ is even for the number of critical periods. To the best of our knowledge, these lower bounds are new, moreover the latter one is twice the existing results up to the dominant term.

On the Stability of Symmetric Periodic Orbits of the Elliptic Sitnikov Problem

Motivated by the recent works on the stability of symmetric periodic orbits of the elliptic Sitnikov problem, for time-periodic Newtonian equations with symmetries, we will study symmetric periodic solutions which are emanated from nonconstant periodic solutions of autonomous equations. By using the theory of Hill's equations, we will first deduce in this paper a criterion for the linearized stability and instability of periodic solutions which are odd in time. Such a criterion is complementary to that for periodic solutions which are even in time, obtained recently by the present authors. Applying these criteria to the elliptic Sitnikov problem, we will prove in an analytical way that the odd $(2p,p)$-periodic solutions of the elliptic Sitnikov problem are hyperbolic and therefore are Lyapunov unstable when the eccentricity is small, while the corresponding even $(2p,p)$-periodic solutions are elliptic and linearized stable. These are the first analytical results on the stability of nonconstant periodic orbits of the elliptic Sitnikov problem.

Limit cycles by perturbing quadratic isochronous centers inside piecewise smooth polynomial differential systems

In the present paper, we study the number of zeros of the first order Melnikov function for piecewise smooth polynomial differential system, to estimate the number of limit cycles bifurcated from the period annulus of quadratic isochronous centers, when they are perturbed inside the class of all piecewise smooth polynomial differential systems of degree $n$ with the straight line of discontinuity $x=0$. An explicit and fairly accurate upper bound for the number of zeros of the first order Melnikov functions with respect to quadratic isochronous centers $S_1, S_2$ and $S_3$ is provided. For quadratic isochronous center $S_4$, we give a rough estimate for the number of zeros of the first order Melnikov function due to its complexity. Furthermore, we improve the upper bound associated with $S_4$, from $14n+11$ in \cite{LLLZ}, $12n-1$ in \cite{SZ} to $[(5n-5)/2]$, when it is perturbed inside all smooth polynomial differential systems of degree $n$. Besides, some evidence on the equivalence of the first order Melnikov function and the first order Averaged function for piecewise smooth polynomial differential systems is found.

On the cyclicity of the period annulus of quadratic Hamiltonian triangle vector field

This paper is concerned with the cyclicity of the period annulus of quadratic Hamiltonian triangle vector field under quadratic perturbations. This problem has been studied by Iliev (J. Differential Equations {\bf 128}(1996)), based on the displacement function obtained by Żoładek (J. Differential Equations {\bf 109}(1994)). Recently, P. Mardešić etc. (J. Dynamical and Control Systems {\bf 17}(2011)) studied unfoldings of the Hamiltonian triangle within quadratic vector fields. It turned out that the displacement function is not precise of the form given by Żoładek. Using the corrected form of the displacement function obtained by P. Mardešić etc, it is proved in this paper that the cyclicity of the period annulus under quadratic perturbations is equal to three.

Bifurcation analysis and global dynamics of a mathematical model of antibiotic resistance in hospitals

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria has posed a grave threat to public health by causing a number of nosocomial infections in hospitals. Mathematical models have been used to study the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria within a hospital and the measures to control antibiotic resistance in nosocomial pathogens. Studies presented in \cite{LBL,LB} have shown great value in understanding the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in a hospital. However, their results are limited to numerical simulations of a few different scenarios without analytical analysis of the models in all biologically feasible parameter regions. Bifurcation analysis and identification of the global stability conditions are necessary to assess the interventions which are proposed to limit nosocomial infection and stem the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this paper we study the global dynamics of the mathematical model of antibiotic resistance in hospitals in \cite{LBL,LB}. The invasion reproduction number $\mathcal R_{ar}$ of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is introduced. We give the relationship of $\mathcal R_{ar}$ and two control reproduction numbers of sensitive bacteria and resistant bacteria ($\mathcal R_{sc}$ and $\mathcal R_{rc}$). More importantly, we prove that a backward bifurcation may occur at $\mathcal R_{ar}=1$ when the model includes superinfection which is not mentioned in \cite{LB}. That is, there exists a new threshold $\mathcal R_{ar}^c$, and if $\mathcal R_{ar}^c<\mathcal R_{ar}<1$, then the system can have two interior equilibria and it supports an interesting bistable phenomenon. This provides critical information on controlling the antibiotic-resistance in a hospital.

On the number of limit cycles for a class of discontinuous quadratic differential systems

The present paper is devoted to the study of the maximum number of limit cycles bifurcated from the periodic orbits of the quadratic isochronous center $\dot{x}=-y+\frac{16}{3}x^{2}-\frac{4}{3}y^{2},\dot{y}=x+\frac{8}{3}xy$ by the averaging method of first order, when it is perturbed inside a class of discontinuous quadratic polynomial differential systems. The \emph{Chebyshev criterion} is used to show that this maximum number is 5 and can be realizable. The result and that in paper \cite{LC} completely answer the questions left in the paper \cite{LM}.

Abelian integrals and limit cycles for a class of cubic polynomial vector fields of Lotka-Volterra type with a rational first integral of degree 2

In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles which bifurcate from the periodic orbits of cubic polynomial vector fields of Lotka-Volterra type having a rational first integral of degree 2, under polynomial perturbations of degree $n$. The analysis is carried out by estimating the number of zeros of the corresponding Abelian integrals. Moreover, using \emph{Chebyshev criterion}, we show that the sharp upper bound for the number of zeros of the Abelian integrals defined on each period annulus is 3 for $n=3$. The simultaneous bifurcation and distribution of limit cycles for the system with two period annuli under cubic polynomial perturbations are considered. All configurations $(u,v)$ with $0\leq u, v\leq 3, u+v\leq5$ are realizable.
