Blockchains for Business Process Management - Challenges and Opportunities

Blockchain technology promises a sizable potential for executing inter-organizational business processes without requiring a central party serving as a single point of trust (and failure). This paper analyzes its impact on business process management (BPM). We structure the discussion using two BPM frameworks, namely the six BPM core capabilities and the BPM lifecycle. This paper provides research directions for investigating the application of blockchain technology to BPM.

Hybrid Collaborative Recommendation via Semi-AutoEncoder

In this paper, we present a novel structure, Semi-AutoEncoder, based on AutoEncoder. We generalize it into a hybrid collaborative filtering model for rating prediction as well as personalized top-n recommendations. Experimental results on two real-world datasets demonstrate its state-of-the-art performances.

AutoSVD++: An Efficient Hybrid Collaborative Filtering Model via Contractive Auto-encoders

Collaborative filtering (CF) has been successfully used to provide users with personalized products and services. However, dealing with the increasing sparseness of user-item matrix still remains a challenge. To tackle such issue, hybrid CF such as combining with content based filtering and leveraging side information of users and items has been extensively studied to enhance performance. However, most of these approaches depend on hand-crafted feature engineering, which are usually noise-prone and biased by different feature extraction and selection schemes. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid model by generalizing contractive auto-encoder paradigm into matrix factorization framework with good scalability and computational efficiency, which jointly model content information as representations of effectiveness and compactness, and leverage implicit user feedback to make accurate recommendations. Extensive experiments conducted over three large scale real datasets indicate the proposed approach outperforms the compared methods for item recommendation.

Tuning the phase sensitivity of a double-lambda system with a static magnetic field

We study the effect of a DC magnetic field on the phase sensitivity of a double-lambda system coupled by two laser fields, a probe and a pump. It is demonstrated that the gain and the refractive index of the probe can be controlled by either the magnetic field or the relative phase between the two laser fields. More interestingly, when the system reduces to a single-lambda system, turning on the magnetic field transforms the system from a phase-insensitive process to a phase-sensitive one. In the pulsed-probe regime, we observed switching between slow and fast light when the magnetic field or the relative phase was adjusted. Experiments using a coated 87Rb vapor cell produced results in good agreement with our numerical simulation. This work provides a novel and simple means to manipulate phase sensitive electromagnetically-induced-transparency or four-wave mixing, and could be useful for applications in quantum optics, nonlinear optics and magnetometery based on such systems.

Effort-Oriented Classification Matrix of Web Service Composition

Within the service-oriented computing domain, Web service composition is an effective realization to satisfy the rapidly changing requirements of business. Therefore, the research into Web service composition has unfolded broadly. Since examining all of the related work in this area becomes a mission next to impossible, the classification of composition approaches can be used to facilitate multiple research tasks. However, the current attempts to classify Web service composition do not have clear objectives. Furthermore, the contexts and technologies of composition approaches are confused in the existing classifications. This paper proposes an effort-oriented classification matrix for Web service composition, which distinguishes between the context and technology dimension. The context dimension is aimed at analyzing the environment influence on the effort of Web service composition, while the technology dimension focuses on the technique influence on the effort. Consequently, besides the traditional classification benefits, this matrix can be used to build the basis of cost estimation for Web service composition in future research.
