Beyond Agent Harnesses: Cross-Substrate Authority for Multi-Agent Systems

Agentic systems persist model-visible memory while mutating workspaces, while a runtime, registry, or approval service may hold authority state outside both. Identical final files can then require opposite safe actions. We call this the cross-substrate authority gap: decision- relevant authorization information resides outside the planner-visible workspace or memory state. Across two controlled mini-benchmark families, three experiments compare planner-observation augmentation with an execution-time authority check using real Git lineage, durably recorded agent execution attempts, deterministic oracles, and two model routes. Experiment 1 is a 128-cell controlled evidence ablation: authority-blind candidate evidence obtains 0/32 final semantic success, while raw receipts and a typed relation both obtain 32/32. The missing authority fact accounts for the gain; typed packaging provides no observed planning-accuracy gain over equal raw information. Experiment 2 uses 96 planning calls: workspace-visible evidence yields 12/16 unsafe publication decisions, and planning with the typed relation remains unreliable (15/32 first actions correct; 11/32 invalid or absent). Experiment 3 replays the same 32 fixed model-generated first-action intents with zero additional model calls; a deterministic execution guard prevents all six unsafe intents from becoming effects and permits all 12 valid authorized publish intents. These results position authority enforcement at the mutation boundary as the operational endpoint of memory governance.

Agent-UCT: Upper Confidence Bounds Applied to Trees for Agentic Workflow Optimization with Cost-Awareness

Optimizing agentic workflows, such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, requires navigating a combinatorial space of discrete component choices under tight evaluation budgets. Existing approaches - heuristic search, black-box optimization, and standard tree search methods - do not explicitly exploit the compositional structure of these workflows, leading to redundant computation and inefficient budget allocation. We introduce Agent-UCT (Agent-based Cost-Aware Upper Confidence Bounds Applied to Trees), a tree search algorithm that extends UCT with a reuse-aware regularization term derived from a bipartite prefix reuse graph. Agent-UCT biases selection toward branches that leverage previously materialized configuration prefixes, reducing redundant execution while maintaining effective exploration. Our framework, RAGSpace, unifies heterogeneous RAG components from LongRAG, LightRAG, and Self-RAG into a five-dimensional configuration space, enabling systematic cross-framework recombination. WTB (Workflow Test Bench) provides deterministic replay, content-addressable caching, and transactional consistency, ensuring that intermediate states are materialized once and reused across the search. Experiments on HotpotQA and UltraDomain demonstrate that Agent-UCT identifies configurations with the highest out-of-sample performance among the evaluated fixed framework presets. Under full-pool evaluation, bipartite prefix reuse reduces logical search cost by 73.6% relative to the no-prefix-sharing cost upper bound. Compared with full-pool evaluation, sampling-based evaluation further achieves a 4.2x wall-clock speedup. Agent-UCT, RAGSpace, and WTB together provide a unified framework for cost-aware, reproducible, and compositionally efficient agentic workflow optimization.

Room-Temperature Noncolinear Ferroelectricity in van der Waals WO$_2$Cl$_2$ with a Wide Bandgap

Low-dimensional ferroelectrics are attractive for their promising prospects in nanoelectronics. Compared with widely-used ferroelectric perovskites, most low-dimensional ferroelectrics exhibit several inborn weaknesses such as small bandgaps (mostly <2 eV, i.e. semiconductors-like) or faint polarizations (e.g. $<1$ $\mu$C/cm$^2$ for sliding ferroelectrics even if their bandgaps can be large). Here we experimentally demonstrate the room-temperature ferroelectricity of van der Waals WO$_2$Cl$_2$ . The well-tested d0 rule inherited from ferroelectric perovskites leads to a large dipole (~3 e\AA) from the off-center displacement of W$^6+$ ion and a wide bandgap of 2.80 eV. Its ferroelectricity is proved by multiple characterizations including second harmonic generation, piezoresponse force microscopy, and ferroelectric hysteresis loops. More interestingly, the exotic noncollinear dipole order is directly observed at the atomic level by integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our work paves an alternative route for low-dimensional ferroelectrics to pursue excellent ferroelectric performance and distinct physics of polarity.

The Structure-tuning Magnetism in the Co(NbxTa1-x)2O6 Series

Low dimensional quantum materials have been extensively studied within the physics community, among which Co2+ is one of the most popular magnetic ions to be embedded into the structural motif. CoNb2O6 and CoTa2O6 both have adopted an effective spin-1/2 state, with the former attracting enduring interest while the latter being rarely investigated. This difference can be attributed to their distinct crystal structures, not only in crystal systems, but more important, how the CoO6 octahedra are connected. We successfully merge these two compounds together and map out the doping limits. We find out Ta and Nb dopants modify the properties of the parent compounds in subtle but different ways and construct a magnetic phase diagram of the Co(NbxTa1-x)2O6 (0 < x < 1) series. In addition, our results suggest that Ta-doping may pave a way to strengthen the lower-dimensional quantum phenomena in CoNb2O6 before its crystal structure starts to melt down.

AgentGit: A Version Control Framework for Reliable and Scalable LLM-Powered Multi-Agent Systems

With the rapid progress of large language models (LLMs), LLM-powered multi-agent systems (MAS) are drawing increasing interest across academia and industry. However, many current MAS frameworks struggle with reliability and scalability, especially on complex tasks. We present AgentGit, a framework that brings Git-like rollback and branching to MAS workflows. Built as an infrastructure layer on top of LangGraph, AgentGit supports state commit, revert, and branching, allowing agents to traverse, compare, and explore multiple trajectories efficiently. To evaluate AgentGit, we designed an experiment that optimizes target agents by selecting better prompts. We ran a multi-step A/B test against three baselines -- LangGraph, AutoGen, and Agno -- on a real-world task: retrieving and analyzing paper abstracts. Results show that AgentGit significantly reduces redundant computation, lowers runtime and token usage, and supports parallel exploration across multiple branches, enhancing both reliability and scalability in MAS development. This work offers a practical path to more robust MAS design and enables error recovery, safe exploration, iterative debugging, and A/B testing in collaborative AI systems.

A Low-cost Quasi-planar Array Probe for Photoacoustic Imaging

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a novel hybrid imaging technique that combines the benefits of both optical and acoustic imaging modalities, which provides functional and molecular optical contrasts of deep tissue. Commonly used ultrasound transducers for PAI include linear and planar arrays, which can provide two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction, respectively. However, linear arrays cannot provide reconstruction of 3D images, which makes it impossible to locate chromophores in 3D space. Although planar array can provide fast 3D imaging in real time, it usually requires thousands of analog-to-digital conversion channels for data acquisition, which is costly. To fill the gap between 2D and 3D PAI, we propose a quasi-planar array that uses double 16-elements-linear arrays arranged in parallel to achieve real-time 3D imaging. We first conducted simulation studies to prove that the quasi-planar probe can perform 3D imaging to localize simple chromophores. Then, the agarose phantom experiment demonstrated that the probe can reconstruct 3D imaging of multiple absorbers in different depths. A potential application of this device is to provide a low-cost 3D PAI solution for fast tracking of needle tip during needle biopsy, which will be further explored in our future work.

Design, synthesis, and physical properties of the intergrowth compound Eu$_2$CuZn$_2$As$_3$

The rational combination of existing magnetic topological compounds presents a promising route for designing new topological materials. We report the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of the layered quaternary intergrowth compound Eu$_2$CuZn$_2$As$_3$, which combines structural units of two known magnetic topological materials, EuCuAs and EuZn$_2$As$_2$. Eu$_2$CuZn$_2$As$_3$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state with successive magnetic transitions: quasi-two-dimensional ordering at $T_\mathrm{M} = 29.3$\,K, long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{N} = 19$\,K, and spin-reorientation at $T_\mathrm{SR} = 16.3$\,K. The stepwise magnetic transitions manifest as plateau-like anomalies in the heat capacity. These transitions originate from multiple superexchange pathways and periodic variation of interplane Eu-Eu distances in the intergrowth structure. Charge transport shows a pronounced resistivity increase above $T_\mathrm{N}$ followed by minimal change below the ordering temperature. Magnetic fields rapidly suppress this resistivity rise, yielding significant negative magnetoresistance. Remarkably, Eu$_2$CuZn$_2$As$_3$ inherits the nonlinear anomalous Hall effect characteristic of its parent compounds. Energy evaluations of collinear spin configurations reveal a lowest-energy state with ferromagnetic coupling between Eu planes in EuCuAs units while maintaining antiferromagnetic coupling within EuZn$_2$As$_2$ units. The corresponding electronic structure displays potentially topologically nontrivial features. Our work demonstrates the efficacy of structural hybridization for discovering novel magnetic topological materials and establishes a general strategy for materials discovery.

Interplay of magnetic ordering and charge transport in a distorted ScAl$_3$C$_3$-type GdZn$_3$As$_3$

We present the synthesis and characterization of GdZn$_3$As$_3$, a previously unreported variant of the $RM_3X_3$ family ($R$ = lanthanides; $M$ = Zn, Cd; $X$ = P, As), prepared in both single-crystal and polycrystalline forms. Unlike other $RM_3X_3$ compounds that crystallize in undistorted hexagonal structures, GdZn$_3$As$_3$ adopts a distorted ScAl$_3$C$_3$-type orthorhombic structure with $Cmcm$ space group. Magnetic measurements demonstrate that GdZn$_3$As$_3$ undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at the Curie temperature ($T_{\mathrm{C}}$) of 6.3~K, which is unique among known $RM_3X_3$ materials. This magnetic transition is further confirmed by specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. GdZn$_3$As$_3$ displays metallic behavior with a pronounced resistivity peak near $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, which is strongly suppressed by magnetic fields, leading to significant negative magnetoresistance. Hall effect measurements reveal a low carrier density and a clear nonlinear anomalous Hall effect in GdZn$_3$As$_3$. Furthermore, both specific heat and resistivity data suggest the presence of additional magnetic transition(s) below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, requiring further investigation. These results demonstrate that GdZn$_3$As$_3$ possesses distinct structural, magnetic, and electronic transport properties within the $RM_3X_3$ family, establishing it as an exceptional platform for investigating competing magnetic interactions in low-carrier-density rare-earth triangular-lattice systems.

Structural design and multiple magnetic orderings of the intergrowth compound Eu$_2$CuMn$_2$P$_3$

We report the design, synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of a layered intergrowth compound, Eu$_2$CuMn$_2$P$_3$. The structure of Eu$_2$CuMn$_2$P$_3$ features an alternating arrangement of hexagonal EuCuP block layers and trigonal EuMn$_2$P$_2$ block layers, interconnected through shared Eu planes. This structural hybridization leads to multiple magnetic orderings in Eu$_2$CuMn$_2$P$_3$: weak antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Mn at $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn}$ = 80 K, AFM ordering of Eu at $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu}$ = 29 K, a spin-reorientation transition at $T_\mathrm{SR}$ = 14.5 K, and weak ferromagnetism below $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn}$. The spin configurations at different temperature regions were discussed based on the calculations of magnetic energies for various collinear arrangements. Resistivity measurements reveal a pronounced transition peak at $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu}$, which is suppressed in the presence of a magnetic field, resulting in a significant negative magnetoresistance effect. The computed semimetallic band structure, characterized by a small density of states at the Fermi level, aligns well with experimental observations. The successful synthesis of Eu$_2$CuMn$_2$P$_3$ and its fascinating magnetic properties highlight the effectiveness of our block-layer design strategy. By assembling magnetic block layers of compounds with compatible crystal symmetries and closely matched lattice parameters, this approach opens exciting avenues for discovering layered materials with unique magnetic behaviors.

Unusual magnetic and transport properties in the Zintl phase Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$

Narrow-gap rare-earth Zintl phases frequently exhibit fascinating physical phenomena due to their various crystal structures, complex magnetic properties, and tunable transport behaviors. Here we report the synthesis, magnetic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of a Eu-containing Zintl arsenide, Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$, which consists of infinite chains of Eu cations and anionic frameworks constructed from corner-sharing ZnAs$_4$ tetrahedra. Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$ exhibits complicated magnetic behavior owing to intricate exchange interactions mediated by the discrete anionic fragments. Two long-range magnetic transitions at 22 K ($T_\mathrm{N}$) and 9 K ($T^*$), as well as exceptionally strong ferromagnetic fluctuations around 29 K ($T_\mathrm{F}$), are indicated by the susceptibility, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. Besides, Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$ displays metallic behavior, attributable to the hole carriers doped by slight Eu vacancies or the mixed valence of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$. A prominent resistivity peak occurs around $T_\mathrm{N}$, which is rapidly suppressed by the applied field, leading to a prominent negative magnetoresistance effect. A resistivity hysteresis is observed below 5 K, caused by a small net ferromagnetic component. Our study presents the distinct magnetic and transport properties of Eu$_{11}$Zn$_6$As$_{12}$, and further experiments are required to elucidate the origin of these novel behaviors. Moreover, our findings demonstrate that Eu-based Zintl phases are a fertile ground to study the interplay between magnetism and charge transport.

Resolution Enhancement of Under-sampled Photoacoustic Microscopy Images using Implicit Neural Representations

Acoustic-Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy (AR-PAM) is promising for subcutaneous vascular imaging, but its spatial resolution is constrained by the Point Spread Function (PSF). Traditional deconvolution methods like Richardson-Lucy and model-based deconvolution use the PSF to improve resolution. However, accurately measuring the PSF is difficult, leading to reliance on less accurate blind deconvolution techniques. Additionally, AR-PAM suffers from long scanning times, which can be reduced via down-sampling, but this necessitates effective image recovery from under-sampled data, a task where traditional interpolation methods fall short, particularly at high under-sampling rates. To address these challenges, we propose an approach based on Implicit Neural Representations (INR). This method learns a continuous mapping from spatial coordinates to initial acoustic pressure, overcoming the limitations of discrete imaging and enhancing AR-PAM's resolution. By treating the PSF as a learnable parameter within the INR framework, our technique mitigates inaccuracies associated with PSF estimation. We evaluated our method on simulated vascular data, showing significant improvements in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) over conventional methods. Qualitative enhancements were also observed in leaf vein and in vivo mouse brain microvasculature images. When applied to a custom AR-PAM system, experiments with pencil lead demonstrated that our method delivers sharper, higher-resolution results, indicating its potential to advance photoacoustic microscopy.

Recent advances in understanding and manipulating magnetic and electronic properties of Eu$M_2X_2$ ($M$ = Zn, Cd; $X$ = P, As)

Over the past five years, significant progress has been made in understanding the magnetism and electronic properties of CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type Eu$M_2X_2$ ($M$ = Zn, Cd; $X$ = P, As) compounds. Prior theoretical work and experimental studies suggested that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ had the potential to host rich topological phases, particularly an ideal magnetic Weyl semimetal state when the spins are polarized along the c axis. However, this perspective is challenged by recent experiments utilizing samples featuring ultra-low carrier densities, as well as meticulous calculations employing various approaches. Nonetheless, the Eu$M_2X_2$ family still exhibit numerous novel properties that remain to be satisfactorily explained, such as the giant nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and the colossal magnetoresistance effect. Moreover, Eu$M_2X_2$ compounds can be transformed from semiconducting antiferromagnets to metallic ferromagnets by introducing a small number of carriers or applying external pressure, and a further increase in the ferromagnetic transition temperature can be achieved by reducing the unit cell volume. These features make the Eu$M_2X_2$ family a fertile platform for studying the interplay between magnetism and charge transport, and an excellent candidate for applications in spintronics. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the magnetic and transport behaviors of Eu$M_2X_2$ compounds with varying carrier densities, as well as the current insights into these characteristics. An outlook for future research opportunities is also provided.

Manipulating magnetism and transport properties of EuCd$_2$P$_2$ with a low carrier concentration

Materials that exhibit strongly coupled magnetic order and electronic properties are crucial for both fundamental research and technological applications. However, finding a material that not only shows remarkable magnetoresistive responses but also has an easily tunable ground state remains a challenge. Here, we report successful manipulation of the magnetic and transport properties of EuCd$_2$P$_2$, which is transformed from an A-type antiferromagnet ($T_\mathrm{N}$ = 11 K) exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance into a ferromagnet ($T_\mathrm{C}$ = 47 K) with metallic behavior. The dramatic alteration results from a low hole concentration of $10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$ induced by changing the growth conditions. Electronic structure and total energy calculations confirm the tunability of magnetism with a small carrier concentration for EuCd$_2$P$_2$. It is feasible to switch between the magnetic states by using field-effect to control the carrier density, thereby changing the magneto-electronic response. The controllable magnetism and electrical transport of EuCd$_2$P$_2$ make it a potential candidate for spintronics.

Carrier-induced transition from antiferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic metal in the layered phosphide EuZn$_2$P$_2$

EuZn$_2$P$_2$ was reported to be an insulating antiferromagnet with $T_\mathrm{N}$ of 23.5 K. In this study, single crystals of EuZn$_2$P$_2$ exhibiting metallic behavior and a ferromagnetic order of 72 K ($T_\mathrm{C}$) are successfully synthesized via a salt flux method. The presence of hole carriers induced by the Eu vacancies in the lattice is found to be crucial for the drastic changes in magnetism and electrical transport. The carriers mediate the interlayer ferromagnetic interaction, and the coupling strength is directly related to $T_\mathrm{C}$, as evidenced by the linear dependence of $T_\mathrm{C}$ and the fitted Curie-Weiss temperatures on the Eu-layer distances for ferromagnetic Eu$M_2X_2$ ($M$ = Zn, Cd; $X$ = P, As). The ferromagnetic EuZn$_2$P$_2$ shows conspicuous negative magnetoresistance (MR) near $T_\mathrm{C}$, owing to strong magnetic scattering. The MR behavior is consistent with the Majumdar-Littlewood model, indicating that the MR can be enhanced by decreasing the carrier density. Our findings suggest that Eu$M_2X_2$ has highly tunable magnetism and charge transport, making it a promising material family for potential applications in spintronics.

Magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain antiferromagnet BaNiTe2O7

We report a quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain compound BaNiTe2O7. This magnetic system has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction. These results indicate that BaNiTe2O7 develops a short-range magnetic correlation around T ~ 22 K. With further cooling, an antiferromagnetic phase transition is observed at TN ~ 5.4 K. Neutron powder diffraction revealed antiferromagnetic noncollinear order with a commensurate propagation vector k = (1/2, 1, 0). The refined magnetic moment size of Ni2+ at 1.5 K is 1.84μB, and its noncollinear spin texture is confirmed by first-principles calculations. Inelastic neutron-scattering results and density functional theory calculations confirmed the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin systems.

ViG-UNet: Vision Graph Neural Networks for Medical Image Segmentation

Deep neural networks have been widely used in medical image analysis and medical image segmentation is one of the most important tasks. U-shaped neural networks with encoder-decoder are prevailing and have succeeded greatly in various segmentation tasks. While CNNs treat an image as a grid of pixels in Euclidean space and Transformers recognize an image as a sequence of patches, graph-based representation is more generalized and can construct connections for each part of an image. In this paper, we propose a novel ViG-UNet, a graph neural network-based U-shaped architecture with the encoder, the decoder, the bottleneck, and skip connections. The downsampling and upsampling modules are also carefully designed. The experimental results on ISIC 2016, ISIC 2017 and Kvasir-SEG datasets demonstrate that our proposed architecture outperforms most existing classic and state-of-the-art U-shaped networks.

Evolution of magnetic phase in two dimensional van der Waals Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$PS$_3$ single crystals

Metal thio(seleno)phosphates MPX$_3$ have attracted considerable attentions with wide spanned band gaps and rich magnetic properties. In this series, two neighboring members MnPS$_3$ and NiPS$_3$ differ in magnetic atoms, magnetic easy axes, spin anisotropy, as well as nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions. The competition between these components may cause intriguing physical phenomena. In this article, the evolution of magnetism of Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$PS$_3$ series is reported. Despite the incompatible antiferromagnetic orders of two end members, the antiferromagnetism persists as the ground state in the whole substitution region. The magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ show nonmonotonic V-shape behavior, and the reentrant spin glass phase at x=0.5 is observed. In addition, abnormal bifurcation of $T_{\rm N}$ occurs at x=0.75, which may be due to the temperature-dependent spin reorientation or phase separation. The evolution of magnetism is further confirmed semi-quantitatively by our density functional theory calculations. Our study indicates that exotic magnetism can be intrigued when multi-degrees of freedom are involved in these low-dimensional systems, which call for more in-depth microscopic studies in future.

Direct evidence for intermediate multiferroic phase in LiCuFe2(VO4)3

Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, dielectric, and electric polarization of LiCuFe2(VO4)3 have been investigated. Two sequential antiferromagnetic transitions at TN1 ~ 9.95 K and TN2 ~ 8.17 K are observed under zero magnetic field. While a dielectric peak at TN1 is clearly identified, the measured pyroelectric current also exhibits a sharp peak at TN1, implying the magnetically relevant ferroelectricity. Interestingly, another pyroelectric peak around TN2 with opposite signal is observed, resulting in the disappearance of electric polarization below TN2. Besides, the electric polarization is significantly suppressed in response to external magnetic field, evidencing remarkable magnetoelectric effect. These results suggest the essential relevance of the magnetic structure with the ferroelectricity in LiCuFe2(VO4)3, deserving for further investigation of the underlying mechanism.
